"Excerpt from the book..."
The Renaissance marks the separation of the mediaeval from the modern
world. The wide difference between the two epochs of Teutonic history
arises, we are apt somewhat glibly to say, from the fact that our
ancestors worshipped and were ruled by brute force, whereas we follow the
broad light of intellect. Perhaps both statements require modification;
yet in a general way they do suggest the change which by a thousand
different agencies has

“Frames are mental structures that shape the way we see the world. . . . When you hear a word, its frame is activated in your brain. . . . In politics our frames shape our social policies. . . . Because language activates frames, new language is required for new frames.”—George Lakoff

For decades, the powerful communications machine of the conservative movement has controlled our national political discourse. One of the biggest obstacles to progressive victory has been seeing what American political speech looks like when it is not “framed” by the Republican noise machine.

Framing the Debate: Famous Presidential Speeches and How Progressives Can Use Them to Change the Conversation (and Win Elections) is about unleashing the power of communication in contemporary progressive politics. The book presents fifteen key speeches by American presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George Bush—in order to define the big ideas and images—the “frames”—that each speech evokes to show how those framing techniques can be applied to today’s political debate in order promote a progressive perspective.

An essential book in today’s political climate, Framing the Debate will be instrumental in helping to reshape progressive political language and rhetoric.

An expert on speeches and messaging, Jeffrey Feldman is the editor in chief of the influential political blog Frameshop (www.frameshopisopen.com). He also has a weekly segment on The Thom Hartmann Show on Air America, and travels the country offering seminars on language and progressive politics.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit wonky, a bit okay, preferred him on C-Span
Feldman can be vitroilic and say dumb things when he is not breaking his arm patting himself (and fellow "progressives'") on the back, but his book has a point and it makes it well. The point is that how you say something is as important, perhaps more, as what you say.Take the issue, change the focus, keep it on your turf, make your the issue work for you.For anyone interested in politics and in speaking pursuasively in groups, it's a fair exercise. But just fair. When Mr. Feldman applies it he can be very effective like when, on C-Span, he turned the discussion on the war on "what should be the constraints on the powers of the executive?"I thought it well played and articulated. Then he can get silly like in his written defense of the Move-On "Betray-Us" ad (it's a conspiracy, see, the conservatives just want you to believe that applying the word "betrayal" to a general implies treason because normal, fair-minded, people can't/won't make such a link on their own). But, those are asides. The book makes good points. Most people are less interested in HOW to make a point and more interested in what the point itself is.Me, I like the mechanics so I score it three stars but I think the audience will be limitted to wonky types.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contrived and not worth the time
This book is a bit contrived, quite formulaic, and in the end neither useful or particularly interesting.I thought the premise was quite interesting, and the cited speeches were for the most part stirring. However, the subsequent analysis was contrived, with a strong feeling of trying to force history to conform to modern values. The recommendations weren't really apt or useful.

I'm a big fan of George Lakoff, and found his first book (Don't Think Of An Elephant!/ How Democrats And Progressives Can Win: Know Your Values And Frame The Debate: The Essential Guide For Progressives) intriguing, and his most recent book (Thinking Points: Communicating Our American Values and Vision) both empowering and useful. For someone who hasn't read Lakoff, this book may be interesting and useful, but I'd suggest your time would be better spent with Lakoff instead -- in particular, the most recent one is great reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Communicating Progressive Principles
Progressives have been less effective than consevatives in communicating political ideas.Progressives have focused on dryly presenting policies and programs without laying out the underlying values or principles with which voters could more readily identify.Feldman's book helps to remedy this shortcoming among progressives.

Feldman analyzes how 15 presidents have used frames in major speeches to convey big ideas. In so doing, he advises progressive politicians, activists and ordinary citizens how to use framing to persuasively communicate progressive principles. This book should be welcomed byprogressives and all those interested in effective, genuine political communication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart book, changes how you see things
Every once in a while, I find a book that changes how I see things completely--and this is one of those books. If you've ever watched a TV newscast or listened to a radio broadcast or read a newspaper--this book will suddenly open your eyes. By walking us through some amazingly cool speeches by U.S. Presidents, Feldman turns every reader into what he calls a "framer" of ideas--ordinary people who "drive the debate" by engaging what they hear and then speaking back.Easy to understand and easy to put to use.Everyone should read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective on a bit of history
This is a must have book.Jeffery Feldman offers new and creative insight into famous speeches of our country's Presidents.Even more than fascinating to read, it opens your eyes to what you hear on the TV and read in papers.Politics and Issues in general are looked at in a new way after reading just part of this book.Democrats and Republicans alike gain new insight into our Presidents. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nah
The book sounds very profound but it is so light and poorly researched it is not worth the money.
I purchased this on my Kindle. There are so many mis-spelled words that at times I could not get the meaning of the sentence.

The premise of this book is that each of these 100 people made a pivotal decision at the age of 22 that had a profound effect on the rest of their lives and set the direction for their life. The author takes license on the age issue, sometimes 21, sometimes 23 to suit his needs.
The research is poor and any person who is a fan of pop culture could have written this book.
Pass.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great gift to give for anyone approaching that magic age
From experience I can say that as a 22 year old, uncertainty is your only certainty especially in today's manic reality. But this book did help bring out the fact that even your failures can play a part in your success.Although it would have been nice of the author to condense his list a bit (how about only 22 for the age)it was interesting to learn facts about well known figures. I was most impressed with the decisions of Johnny Cash, Dr. Seuss & heck even Pam Anderson. A few choices felt stretched but overall I would recommend this book to the twenty-something crowed in need of a moral boost and those in their post twenties as a way to reflect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice, enjoyable read
Brad Dunn's new book, "When They Were 22" is a breezy read concerning people we know and some whom we might not know as well. Highlights range from Stephen Hawking.....(his best entry) to Jerry Falwell (read it if you must). It's a great idea for a book and one that will click if you're past the ripe old age of 22, or even approaching it! I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love biographies? You'll love this book.
If you love biographies, you'll love this book.An incredible idea which proves that this critical year in any persons life, can alter their future in such a significant way.I highly recommend this book to all. It is not only interesting to young people but Brad Dunn has selected to capture a moment in the lives of such a unique group of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and effective
After I did something really stupid when I was 22, a friend's mother calmed me down by telling me that "youth is for making mistakes, just don't keep making them when you're 40." In this book, B.Dunn points out that many of the people we know, celebrate and even revere were also once 22. Not in the obvious chronological sense, but in the terrrible, wonderful, frightening and enlightening way we all were. It's well written, creative and constantly surprising. Keep it up, big guy. ... Product Description
On the heels of his runaway New York Times bestseller, The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly delivers another strong dose of no-holds-barred advice and the unvarnished truth for America.

Bill O’Reilly is even madder today than when he wrote his last book The O’Reilly Factor–and his fans love him even more. He’s mad because things have gone from bad to worse, in politics, in Hollywood, in every social stratum of the nation. True to its title, The No-Spin Zone cuts through all the rhetoric that some of O’Reilly’s most infamous guests have spewed to expose what’s really on their minds, while sharing plenty of his own emphatic counterpoints along the way.

Shining a searing spotlight on public figures from President George W. Bush and Senator Hillary Clinton to the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and his former CBS News colleague Dan Rather, The No-Spin Zone is laced with the kind of straight-shooting commentary that has made O’Reilly the voice of middle America’s disenfranchised. Examining sex and violence in the media and the tarnished legacy of the Clintons with the same feistiness as the death penalty (which he opposes) and timid national news organizations that roll over for the powerful, Bill O’Reilly delivers not only his opinions, but the documented attitudes of the country’s movers and shakers as well.It demonstrates just whyO’Reilly has become the most successful, the most controversial, the most beloved (by some), and the most disliked (by others) figure in television news today_and a culture hero to tens of millions of everyday Americans. And that’s fact, not spin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are there Democrats who like Bill O'Reilly?
I have to say, it does not surprise me that this book has received such poor reviews on Amazon.I wouldn't expect a liberal reader to finish the entire book and say to themselves, "What a good read!" This book will excite and fire up conservatives and make liberal throw up in their mouthes (most likely, I can't really say for sure as I don't know any liberals who have read this book).O'Reilly prefaces his debates with the statement, "There is usually a loser in the No Spin Zone and somtime's it's me."This is Bill O'Reilly's book and he's going to but whatever he wants in it, in fact he says just that.He does offer a lot of interesting notes about Al Sharpton's rise to power and tax evasion, Jesse Jackson's buisness techniques, and former president Bill Clinton's colorful past.A lot of the evidence O'Reilly offers is very slanted against his opponents, and yet it's hard to deny some of the points he makes.O'Reilly's personality will turn people who disagree with him away and most likely cause them to discount any of his arguements. He fails to let the evidence speak for itself sometimes.I would not say conversion is the objective of this book, although I think O'Reilly would like to think he's reaching some of his left-wing counterparts.
All in all, I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would. It only took me two days to read, and now I'm writing this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars You either love him or hate him
You either love him or you hate him. This will coincide with your view of this and all his other books. I watch O'Reilly on occasion and do not always agree with him, but he makes sense on several topics.I enjoyed his views and look forward to my next enlightening experience via The Culture Warrior

3-0 out of 5 stars O'Reilly's Book
After I finished the book, I was suprised at how much I liked it. The book wasn't the best book I've read but O'Reilly's witty humor made the book enjoyable. The book consists of interviews conducted by O'Reilly with the interviewee's being celebrities. O'Reilly is extremely blunt and gets right to the point. The point most of the time beingto humiliate one by exposing their lies and double standards.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good fire starter
I'm a big fan of Bill's TV program but this "book"... Outside of the first and the last chapters all the rest are excerpts of his TV program. If you can call this a book you better not be calling it the "No Spin Zone" because calling it a book is some of the biggest SPIN I can see.Don't waste your money on stuff like this even if Bill donates "his" earnings somebody is making money on this junk.

1-0 out of 5 stars A whiner and a crier and borderline illiterate
I got this book as a gift.I wish I could return it.We need intelligent discourse in this country, not boneheads like Bill O' Reilly who is just out to cash in on his questionable name.As a Republican myself, I find his comments to be generic and unsupported, and his attitude to be smug and irritating.A terrible book by a flunky. ... Product Description
THE FIRST POPULAR HISTORY OF THE MAKING OF THE MASON-DIXON LINE

The Mason-Dixon line–surely the most famous surveyors’ line ever drawn–represents one of the greatest and most difficult scientific achievements of its time. But behind this significant triumph is a thrilling story, one that has thus far eluded both historians and surveyors. In this engrossing narrative, professional surveyor Edwin Danson takes us on a fascinating journey with Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, two gifted and exuberant English surveyors, through the fields and forests of eighteenth-century America. Vividly describing life in the backwoods and the hardships and dangers of frontier surveying, Drawing the Line discloses for the first time in 250 years many hitherto unknown surveying methods, revealing how Mason and Dixon succeeded where the best American surveyors of the period failed. In accessible, ordinary language, Danson masterfully throws the first clear light on the surveying of the Mason-Dixon line. Set in the social and historical context of pre-Revolutionary America, this book is a spellbinding account of one of the great and historic achievements of its time.

Advance Praise for Drawing the Line

"Drawing the Line combines a fast-moving story, a human drama, and a clear account of surveying in the era of George Washington. An intriguing interaction of politics and science."–CHARLES ROYSTER, Boyd Professor of History, Louisiana State University, and Winner of the Bancroft Prize in History ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars historical novel
this book was novel writen with a historical basis.the book detaild greatly historical backgrounds of the main individuals as well as other important figures throughout history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
This book provides a history and a travelogue and will prompt you to get out and visit the Maryland Pennsylvania communities that were shaped by the politics of colonial america and the Mason-Dixon controversy.Who knew thatthe US went through a partitioning episode. Those who have surveyed or worked with maps or have a love for history will find this an informative and enjoyable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Requires Some Preparation or Concurrent Reading
I applaud the author's intent to bring this episode in engineering and science history to the limelight, but more information about geometric and astronomical concepts are required if this book is to be fully understood by even those in scientific and technical fields. But, having said that, there is far more good about this book than any failings in the details. Land surveying is much more than just geometry. As shown, there is a great deal of interpreting land descriptions (this hasn't changed at all since then!), heeding political sensitivities, and lots of very hard work. I recommend this book to anybody studying land surveying, cartography, geography (physical or social), or civil engineering. This book is mainly concerned with HOW boundaries are established. To understand about WHY boundaries are established in a particular location, see Andro Linklater's *The Fabric of America*

More on the fundamentals of applied astronomy would be helpful. The illustration depicting the length of a degree of latitude appears to be geometrically incorrect and very confusing (see my explanation in the discussion area below). A reader should consider reading some generalized geodesy references along this book. A publication titled: "NOAA Reprint of Basic Geodesy" is very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of historical and technical interest
Most people know next to nothing about this subject, including me. This little book resolves that problem for me.
It turns out to be pretty complicated, and the author does a good job of including that difficulty in this treatment.
I have an interest in surveying and I am impressed with the knowledge that was (and is) required to survey lands. And, all the math must be done by hand. Mason & Dixon had the required personalities for this tedium, and succeeded in their tasks. you will enjoy this book both as history and scientific explanation.

3-0 out of 5 stars a wee bit complicated but still worth it
First off, this book is very detailed and provides great insight to Mason and Dixon's journey of surveying the West line. There is an incredible amount of historical background (yay, I know I won't be failing history now! :-P ) and this is very good at providing the social and historical setting of that time period. Mathematically and scientifically, it was very complicated, but that's to be expected.

Second, Danson did a wonderful job and one of his reasons to writing this was probably to give readers the knowledge of what it was like back then and how two people can achieved such historical success.

So if you love history, or can at least stay awake half of the time during lectures, then this would be a good book. It's nothing like a traditional textbook. If you like math, especially trig, or astronomy, then this would definitely be your kind of book, too. Or, if you just want to impress people with your impeccable knowledge of how you know that the secret in measuring the differences in longitude between two locations is actually measuring the differences in time, then go ahead and give this book a try! ...
