Product Description
Farmers all over the world have to decide what to produce and how to go about it. In the tropics, small farmers have to work with a limited resource-base which usually does not lead itself to highly productive systems of consistent crop and animal production. Yet those people who live in developing tropical countries should be concerned that their farmers do produce more from the limited resources with which they have to work. The principles of farm management economics and the applications of the tools and techniques of farm management analysis and planning can help small farmers in tropics to produce 'a bit more' from their lot. For the benefit of teachers and students of agriculture, farm extension advisors and agricultural planners and managers, this book sets out the principles and practices of farm management economics on small holdings in the tropics in a clear, simple, useful and usable way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book.
Although not all of the information is relevant or accurate today, this book gives good details and suggestions for any homesteader. It is focused towards homesteading not to small scale agriculture, because it doesn't focus on the farm as a business.Good book, highly recommend it to anyone who dreams of developing a life independent from the throws of modern culture.
Good luck to all of you out there growing food for the world!
Also recommend: Small Scale Grain Raising by Gene Lodgson.
The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman
and
Sharing the Harvest.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Calluses of Independence
I absolutely love this book.I have to agree with a previous reviewer's "cringing" at the thought of lining a cistern with sheet lead.Reading this section brought a shocked smile across my face.I'm thankful that we've survived long enough to mend our ways!In this sense, I wouldn't recommend anyone to follow Kains' advice word-for-word.

However, this book still contains a refreshing dose of reality to the average cubical worker daydreaming of ditching their city-responsibilities and running through fields of grain . . . of their own tending. The book is timeless in its ability to make people realize, being fully independent and working the farm is a heck of a lot of work. It's dirty, hard, sometimes unrewarding, and always unforgiving. It's the ultimate test of any family; however, I wouldn't recommend this test for our "entitled" society (unless you're thoroughly set on divorce).

You've got to use your head much more than you ever would sitting in your air conditioned cubical.Farming requires critical thinking, patience, and constant research. This is the point I believe Kains made best.

The book renewed my respect for all farmers of past and left me in moments of silence, in respect of the days of yore.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good read, but do get more updated information before acting
As others have pointed out, the lead-lined cistern is a classic example of bad information. Heck, it was controversial at the time even. None of the financial information, obviously, is at all useful today. The animal practices are still plausible as I understand it, especially the chickens, but much of the tree management details differ from current best practices. So, if you want modern information, this isn't it. I'd recommend The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-sufficient Living in the Heart of the City (Process Self-reliance Series) for the urban gardener, and perhaps The Self-Reliant Homestead: A Book of Country Skills for those with more land.

3-0 out of 5 stars Five Acres and Independence
This book is quaint, extremely outdated, especially regarding financial questions. Marketing isues are comng around again to where some things make sense. I found a number of the sections and chapters helpful in gaining insight into intense grazing, but a number were simply of little use. If you are looking for a path to being off the grid, there were some helpful instructions, but you would have to find a source for ice to make them work. If you are lucky to have a cold spring you can substitute for the ice, perhaps you could make do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read it for the wisdom it contains and not for details on any one topic
As many have stated before me the technical information may be dated/outdated but the wisdom is timeless.I learned a lot from this book - not specifics on goats or chickens or beans, etcetera - it contains really timeless knowledge that many books miss because they do get caught to much in the specifics of chickens or goats or bees or whatever.I particularly enjoyed the fact that so many of the pitfalls are discussed in this book.So many book paint sunshine and rainbows and make everything seem so carefree and easy that I appreciated the honesty and practicality brought by this book.Read it and then read the more specific (and modern) books for each individual task.(Besides no single book will cover all the millions of topics to the minutest of detail each deserves.)This book is definitely worth the read. ... Product Description
Mechanization is an integral part of all North American farms. While farm machinery has improved the efficiency of farming dramatically over the years, the costs of owning and operating machinery can be excessive. Proper management and optimization of mechanized equipment are essential for reducing costs and maximizing profits. Farm Power and Machinery Management analyzes the factors that comprise machinery management, explains the functions of the various machines and mechanisms as they affect economic operation, and offers contemporary approaches and procedures for making management decisions. The authoritative coverage of management principles and the machinery-operating details make this text an outstanding choice for courses in agricultural education, agricultural mechanization, agricultural business, and agricultural engineering. An understanding of agricultural practices, college algebra, and trigonometry are adequate preparation for using this text. Abundant figures, photographs, and charts, along with laboratory exercises that amplify and fix the concepts of farm machinery management in the reader's mind, enhance the text's effectiveness for students, as well as for farmers, farm operators, and farm managers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Machine management selection, operation and maintenance
An excellent guide to the costing, performance calculation and operation of farm machinery. The text is written extremely well and is easy to comprehend. Topics include machine performance, power performance, operatorperformance, costs, power and equipment selection, most farm operations areincluded. Only critism is that the computer programs are in Basic language(Excell would be prefered). Although principally for students of farmmachine management, it would prove useful for any consultants orcontractors dealing with farm machiney. ... Read more
