4-0 out of 5 stars A good guidline for beginner
I have started using Illustrator software recently and this book have served a good support for flat sketching the garments for women, men and kidswear. Is also gives tips to prepare portfolio, but you already should know basics of how to use Illustrator programme. It is nicely illustrated book and one can get ideas. But again its a basic book and does not cover all the aspects of flat sketching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and highly informative - excellent for fashion students and the fashion industry!
Great book! Even if you are a complete beginner you will find this book an informative and useful resource. It gets you up and running quickly with really simple, step-by-step, illustrated techniques for fashion computing using current software.

In my fashion design studio, we predominatly use CorelDraw, Illustrator and Photoshop, and found this book informative for each of these packages. It covers the basics - how to create flat drawings from vests, skirts, shirts, dresses to pants, and then moves on to producing mood and design boards, visualizing your design ideas using Photoshop. The section on creating a digital portfolio is also vital in todays digital world. Plus it covers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.

It is well illustrated with great examples of flats, illustrations and fashion presentations from illustrators and designers in the fashion industry and from top fashion schools and universities globally.

3-0 out of 5 stars dissappointing
This book has great pictures of fashion illustrations and is helpful because it gives instructions for 3 different CAD platforms, but as far as giving explicite directions on "how to", I found it lacking in substance. It seems that the really great stuff in the book was still hand drawn, scanned in and manipulated a bit with Photoshop. If you are absolutely brand new to these programs and need help gettting started it might help you.For me, it willbe more of a pretty book to look at once in a while rather than a reference for problem solving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Marks!
It is fantastic! Top Marks!
By following the easy steps laid out in the chapters, I cannot believe how simple it is to draw and color my flats, scan and manipulate my fashion drawings and then bring it all together to create my presentations in Photoshop.

I use Illustrator and Photoshop primarily at fashion school, and the other books I own do not explain the tools and techniques as simply as this one does...plus the examples are all fashion and textiles based! For the price it's great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Fashion Design CAD Book
This book is absolutely fantastic, it is easy to follow and inspiring. It shows simple techniques to create flats and fashion presentations using Illustrator and Photoshop. It even showed me how to create my flats using CorelDRAW. The techniques are simple and relevant and very well explained. It includes inspiring images and artwork by other designers and illustrators. It also explains how to create a digital portfolio. I found it very useful on my Fashion Design CAD course and will continue to use it even when I graduate. ... Read more

Book Description
Here is the first and only book to explore cutting-edge print design for fashion through the designer’s eyes—complete with interviews, exclusive archive material from international fashion houses, and full-color photographs of patterns. Innovators such as Eley Kishimoto and Jonathan Saunders explain their work, take us through their artistic process, and consider the relationship between fashion designer and print designer. Every page offers something beautiful and striking—motifs based on nature, others drawn from urban graffiti and graphics, and still more that go retro, abstract, or folkloric. The material is exquisite and invaluable to anyone interested in fashion and design.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better
I got this book for a digital surface design class that I am taking. I thought that it would be a really cool book and I had actually flipped through it once. Yet when I got it, I was a little dissapointed. The author does not carry her thoughts well from one paragraph to another. I feel like she uses big words that she might not necessarily understand completely...oh and there is a missing page :(

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
I loved this book - very inspirational - gave me lots of insight on top designers that I hadn't read about elsewhere. Total eye candy. I highly suggest this book for anyone in the design biz or who just needs inspiration and is a real lover of prints and patterns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT For Beginners and Those Who Have Experience
I'm wanting to become a fashion designer and i bought this book and i was amazed. it really teaches you how to draw fashion models (and people in general) in all different poses. it shows you so many different poses both with an actual person modeling the pose and then a block figure showing you how to draw it. after the structure is learned, it teaches you in a really easy way how to flesh it out, and then how to draw the clothes and how the clothes are supposed to look at folds and creases. if you like this book, i recommend Draw Fashion Models! by Lee Hammond, a great book that goes in depth into more poses and how you should draw the clothes and how they look when the arms are raised, when you're leaning on one hip, etc.

i really recommend buying this amazing book, it's straightforward and very helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, well written, and easy to use.
I bought this book for my 16 yr old daughter who is an aspiring fashion designer. To get into design school & possibly qualify for a scholarship, she must prepare a portfolio. She expressed concern that her sketching skills would look amateurish so she asked for a book to help her.

This book shows in picture and text detail the supplies needed to do a project & an easy format to follow. She loved it and was so excited to have a guide to help her. This book not only helps in this regard, but has several sections that gives pointers on design elements and much more pertinent information.

If you or someone you know is an aspiring fashion designer, do not hesitate to get this book.It will be a valuable tool that will be put t good use.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's ok
This book didn't seem to help me much. Except how I should present my drawings. Yes, it is a ok book. But, Fashion sketchbook is hands down much better than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, clean book
This ended up being a great book for our teenaged friend who wants to be a designer. It was one of very few that didn't dwell on drawing nude figures...a plus when you're giving it to kids :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Artist (Fashion Design Series)
I just started learning drawing fashion by following books. Fashion Artist is one of the books I use. I really liked it. It gives detailed instruction and I can see that I will be able to draw cool fashion figures in a few months. ... Read more

Book Description
FIGURE DRAWING FOR FASHION DESIGN offers a concise, topic by topic guide to acquiring and perfecting these skills, concentrating on the female form. The coverage provided means that this book is ideal both for those who want to apply themselves professionally to fashion design, and for all enthusiasts of drawing the human body. Fashion plates are the primary means of visualizing ideas and concepts in costume and fashion design. To give an accurate impression of what is in a designer's mind it is vital to have complete mastery of the rules of figure drawing. Here, realism and anatomical precision are the chief values, whereas for costume and fashion, stylization and exaggeration are ways of adding individuality and verve to a plate, and of focusing attention on specific elements. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book is really nice gide for those who never draw before .
This book helps a lot, it open your eyes transporting in the world of fashion draw. is really nice material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty great, considering how cheap this book costs...
Though I haven't had a chance to study the book in detail yet, I skimmed through the book, & it seemed like it covered some pretty basic drawing concepts. It also included differing styles of collars, sleeves, etc., which seemed particularly helpful for those in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing
I like this book. It's as good as a $100 sketch book. If your just starting out this is a good selection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay.
This book did help me with my drawings.I needed to know proper proportions and how to draw fabric, etc., but I agree with everyone else: the figures are very "superwoman"ish and, in my opinion, showing way too much skin! I had to put a paper cover over the book so my children wouldn't see the back cover!I was disappointed to find out that the typical design drawing has it's proportions exagerated to make the figure look very tall and thin, but I guess I should have seen that coming with the way today's fashions are.Fortunately the book also provided a scale for real-life proportions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Figure Drawing for Fashion Design Review
I was abit disappointed in this book, I found the illustrations quite old fashioned with an 80's vibe, not what I was expecting. Even the clothes in the illustrations had Dallas style shoulder pads. I'm studying fashion design in college, so I was expecting to be inspired, through the use of different media and rendering techniques, which unfortunately didn't happen. But some of the templates for poses are useful and it would be ok as a starting point. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not so much about drawing...
But about how to draw inspiration from common everyday things. It`s really not about rendering or drawing fashion, but more about the thought process in making the garments.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title .. and still some points lacking...
This book is more about collection development than it is about fashion drawing. And the worst part is... it's so sparse on the information even forhow to develop a collection. Everything is in a nutshell. It's like picking up a children's book-- you don't get much out of it other than the obvious.

3-0 out of 5 stars very basic
Very basic, it goes on a summary overview of areas of fashion design. So, it's great for a beginner that is looking for a quick introduction to what fashion desing drawing would include. Not for someone that has a general idea on what fashion design entails and is looking for more "hands-on" more sophisticated projects. For example, I was looking on how to actually draw clothes wore by people...there was only one area for that, it covered actual drawing of the human body; about 4 pages. A lot of general, finding your style, mood boards, etc. To the title I would add "101" so it is not misleading, then it would be an excellent book!

1-0 out of 5 stars misleading title; glad I checked it out from the library before purchasing it.
The title is an absolute lie. There aren't even general sketches to look onto as templates! This book, chock full of details on how to become "inspired", may help if you need assistance focusing on what motivates you--but otherwise, it's not going to teach you at all about fashion illustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars fashion drawing
This is a well done and well illustrated book, and can be used by novices in Fashion drawing,or by professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great chance to see what happens before....
This book is filled with sketches from some of the best costume designers alive! The chance to see the different sketching styles and read their interviews is a rare opportunity. The book scratches the surface, giving only few pages to each designer, but I felt that the wide scope of the book was a positive balance to that. Each designer represented is interviewed for several pages and offer their unique perspective on costume design.
Every costume design student should own this book and Lynn Pecktal needs to get working on the sequel!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Costume Design: Techniques of Modern Masters
As a student in costume design, I found this book to be of great interest and indeed help in gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges facing costume designers.
The writing documents interviews of 18 professionals who tell about their lives and careers, the joys and difficulties of costume designing and the odd tip for aspiring students
The designer's sketches are plentiful and in glorious colour and while the book would not suit as a text book for costume design methodology it is an excellent source of inspiration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for inspiration!
This is a great book that I bought when I was starting out in costuming.I found it to be a fun read for those who are interested in costume design. It isn't really a resourse book, but if you love costuming or design, it has wonderful interviews with famous costume designers that I found interesting and inspiring. For those times of the year that I wonder why I am still in the costume business (October) this is a great book to rekindle my love for design and theatre. The renderings are beautiful. For designers who do renderings, these would be good to refer to, to see different styles of presentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is...
While this book is absolutely gorgeous, it isn't a book *about* costume rendering. It's not a how-to book, but I'll add that it's a wonderful book for inspiration. The text portion (that I find is often skipped over in favor of looking at the pretty pictures) is worth a read as well, since it goes into some detail on various costumers' processes.Good book, but not an essential read for costume students.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a fabulous tool for study of costume renderings!
I have searched for this book in hardback form and I am so glad it is back as a paperback. The conversations with the designers are invigorating and enlightening for all of us in the design business. It is also a constantsource for excellence in costume renderings.I find myself going back tothe pages over and over again for refinement and inspiration in my ownrendering techniques.A must have for every costume designer! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this Book!
I am so grateful to whom wrote the first rewiew of this book! She was so right! This book covers it all!Women, men and children's clothig... but I mean everything! You won't ever need to purchase any more patterns, specially if you don't fall in to the normal sizes like me... when pattern alteration is in reality a complete re-due... This is like a patermaking bible... you won't ever regrete this purchase, although you will find that a lot of your other pattern making books won't serve you any more...

5-0 out of 5 stars Patternmaking for Fashion Design
Whether you are a beginner, or an experienced seamstress, and you would like to draft your own patterns, buy this book!A very comprehensive publication, with instructions that are also easy to understand and follow. The organisation of this book is excellent.Helen begins with basic patterns for the various foundation garments (ie, shift dress, pencil skirt, etc), giving you easy to follow instructions on how to draft these patterns.Subsequently, she offers a good variety of variations on these basic garments, with comprehsive instructions. From this book alone, you will be able to draft and sew your own fashion range, or just a very good wardrobe for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
Patternmaking for Fashion Design and DVD Package (4th Edition)

I'm an intermediate level sewer and haven't had a course in patternmaking. However I have found this book invaluable even though it is written as a textbook. I haven't read it cover to cover because I regard it as a reference book. However, after having reviewed the sections that relate to the sewing I do, I have found it very enlightening. There are certain principles that I didn't understand until I read it, such as dart rotation. This, for instance, will be very helpful to me in altering commercial patterns to make them fit better. I plan to do some pattern drafting, but will probably use it mostly in altering commercial patterns. For instance, I was recently altering a pants pattern and wondered if I was changing the ratio of the width of the front leg to the back. The book answered my question while books on pattern alterations didn't address this issue. The layout of the book has been thoroughly explained in other reviews, so I won't go into describing it. I will say, however, that I highly recommend this book for anyone who sews as a hobby because it answers a lot of questions one would have when it comes to altering commercial patterns or drafting simple patterns. It's expensive, but money well spent. This book should be in the library of any serious sewer.

1-0 out of 5 stars No, No, No......
This book is outdated, outmoded, and nearly useless. It contains tons of information on how to manipulate fabrics that aren't even in use anymore. Hardly anything on dealing with knit fabrics, which look better and are easier to manipulate. Ask anyone under 50 if they have ever seen any darts in their clothes? And all this slashing and turning and manipulating??? not only is it sloppy, its useless, Useless, USELESS! Lots of money spent for vague instructions on basic blocks, and only clothes made in the 80's. Save eyour money, just because this book is expensive, doesn't make it useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extensive, but a few mistakes...
I was required to purchase this book for my fashion design class. At first I was completely blown away at how comprehensive it was. It talked about measuring, darts and manipulation, basic patterns and principles, women, mens, children, knit, and sportswear. From what I can tell, it's based off of " Industry Standards". So It's not your everyday Joe book.

During class though, many of my teachers noticed discrepancies in the instructions. Particularly the fitted arm block. It made me fail my class twice because the first and second teacher didn't catch that the instructions were incorrect, causing me to continually make an incorrect arm block. It took my DRAPING teacher to find out that the book was incorrect in the instructions for the sleeve cap.

We also had a problem during class, when the instructions made an extremely wonky sleeve pattern, and also a two dart bodice. The student was extremely frustrated with the book and the teacher for their lack of help and knowledge. The student was not an " industry standard" size. So the measurement guides were not available to her to make a proper judgement. She had to receive a bad grade because the book would not produce the correct pattern, and the teacher didn't know what to do.

Otherwise, this book is still a great reference. Many of the styles seem outdated, but yet can be played on to create current looks. But some of the wedding sleeve types are somewhat awful, but that's personal opinion. ... Read more
