4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview on sustainable fashion. Or not.
The FutureFashion White Paper offers an insightful overview on where fashion stands on sustainability. A seemingly contradiction. The Perfect t-shirt story puts all questions - and the lack of answer at this moment - nicely together.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful, well written book!
As I've always been interested in learning how to create my own designs and clothes, I was genuinely pleased when I found this book, which is a great beginners' guide on the subject.
Construction is an essential stage in the creation of a garment, because it allows the 2D design and concept to be translated into the 3D final object; therefore, the right grasp of it is vital to the look and success of the final product. This book takes you step by step through the process of creating your own garment, by carefully and clearly explaining the main stages such as pattern cutting, sizing and grading, blocks and patterns, how to read a design drawing and translate it into blocks and patterns, dart manipulation, slash and spread, and so on. The numerous visual examples perfectly clarify the detailed instructions, so that it's easy to understand how to follow them properly.
What I've found really fascinating is the importance that has been given to the practical, but artistic side of the topic. For example, the whole first section of the book is dedicated to the different kinds of sleeves, collars and pockets which can be realised in order to allow you to successfully translate your ideal design into reality. Many useful tips are then given about fittings and how to alter a pattern by offering a series of badly fitted outfits and explaining how to correct them.
The second section of the book is dedicated to the tools and techniques used to construct and sew the garment either by hand or with the help of a machine. The types of seams and stitches are explored and explained in a very easy and clear way, along with the different techniques which need to be used when working with specific kinds of fabrics and surfaces (like lace or leather).
The whole final section looks at structure and finishing, two other and the book also provides a short history of supported and structured garments, which includes a fantastic section on corsetry.
Even though the instructions are explained in a straightforward way, the general tone of the book is friendly and emphasises that only practice leads to perfection. ... Read more

Product Description
The period between the two world wars was one of extreme upheavals in politics, economics, and society as a whole. It was also a time of intense artistic creativity, culminating in the great Paris Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925, and the subsequent spread of the celebrated Art Deco style.

The radical innovations in Art Deco fashion and interior decoration demanded new textile designs, and, as the period progressed, fabrics for clothes, upholstery, wallpaper, and rugs increasingly reflected the modernism, elegance, and vibrancy of the movement. As the French artist Raoul Dufy, himself a brilliant fabric designer, wrote, "Paintings have spilled from their frames and stained our dress and our walls."

This sumptuous new book invites the reader to discover the spectacular world of Art Deco fabrics, with examples by designers such as Delaunay, Ruhlmann, Henry, Marrot, Dufresne, Bénédictus, and dozens more. Alain-René Hardy, a noted French expert in twentieth-century decorative arts, has searched through museum holdings, manufacturers' archives, and private collections to find hundreds of examples of both hand- and machine-made textiles, many of them never before published.

From the lavish to the minimalist, from luxurious floral patterns to subtle geometric variations in color and texture, Art Deco textiles continue to enthrall us with their originality, complexity, and vivacity. 310 color illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I'm a textile and clothing designer and have a large collection of print reference books. Since I first purchased this book it has been the first book I pull out when I want inspiration. Because of that I have also given it as a gift to several other designers, and it has become one of their favorites too. The collection is inspired and diverse and the printing shows beautiful detail. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves great contemporary design, as well as those interested in vintage textile design.

Art Deco Textiles is an informed and informative survey of art deco fabrics which packs in color examples drawn from a diverse range of designers in the field, from Marrot and Benedictus to Chanel. Product Description

One of the world's best collections of period designs is brought together as an invaluable resource for designers of all kinds, from fabric, textile, wallpaper, and stained glass designers to graphic and fashion designers. This collection of more than 500 designs covers wallpaper, textiles, furnishings, costume, tiles, and ceramics. The designs range from medieval through renaissance and the 19th century right up to the 1970s; from classic French 17th-century wallpaper through William Morris pomegranate designs to 1950s children's wallpaper. The book is arranged by type of design and motifs—geometric, floral, abstract, figurative—to make it as accessible to designers as possible. A full index at the back helps readers find the right motif, style, or pattern. Though the designs have a strong English flavor, there is also a healthy dose of the best European and Asian designs that have reached the unsurpassable National Trust collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Designs From History
Pattern Design: Period Design Source Book gives the reader a sense of being in a room filled with history, its displays and explanations of what we're seeing practically within reach.

Author Sian Evans walks readers through how patterns, styles and motifs came into use, and what we can learn from them about the people who created them. She explains pattern designs and geometric shapes; the accounts of myths and monsters; the use of Eastern imagery in British colonial artwork; the move from Renaissance to Baroque and Rococo styles, up through the Victorian and Edwardian eras. In the short texts throughout the book, we learn all kinds of detail: the meaning of a griffin, for example, in a coat of arms (its owner would choose death over capture), and the purpose of heraldry, which was to identify people on the battefield.

This is a fascinating and engaging book, with more than 500 examples, featuring fabrics, textiles, stain-glass windows, woodwork and more, perfect for anyone interested in how even ordinary items reveal information about a culture. It's beautiful and informative, a great combination of style and explication of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, easy to follow and inspirational!
I am thrilled I bought Fashion Computing. The visuals, techniques and exercises are incredibly easy to follow.

I urgently needed a book that got me up to speed very quickly with the basics of drawing flats using Illustrator and CorelDraw.

I have now started working through the Photoshop exercises to create my fashion presentations - this book makes it all so simple.

I love the way the book presents just the essential techniques and tools of the software and gets straight to the point. It is full of inspiring fashion illustrations, flats and presentation work. This book is one I will continue to use as a reference and inspiration! Well worth the money!

1-0 out of 5 stars worst book for fashion design using photoshop
This book was a huge disappointment. I am so lucky I purchased a different book to teach me Illustrator (Creative Fashion Design with Illustrator by Kevin Tallon). Tallons book actually has extensive step by step tutorials where Sandra Burke simply skims over her exercises. Many of her exercises don't even work corrently. One could never master Photoshop or Illustrator using this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Computing: Design Techniques and CAD
Out of the 4 books that I have read so far teaching Adobe Illustrator this is the best - my graphics have improved immensely in the short time that I started using this book (and I'm only a third of the way through the book).

The only downside is that with the update in Illustrator (CS 3) some of the instructions for Illustrator do not work and I have had to search through the Illustrator Help menus to download updated instructions.

So the book needs a little updating, but generally I would recommend this book over others so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guidline for beginner
I have started using Illustrator software recently and this book have served a good support for flat sketching the garments for women, men and kidswear. Is also gives tips to prepare portfolio, but you already should know basics of how to use Illustrator programme. It is nicely illustrated book and one can get ideas. But again its a basic book and does not cover all the aspects of flat sketching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and highly informative - excellent for fashion students and the fashion industry!
Great book! Even if you are a complete beginner you will find this book an informative and useful resource. It gets you up and running quickly with really simple, step-by-step, illustrated techniques for fashion computing using current software.

In my fashion design studio, we predominatly use CorelDraw, Illustrator and Photoshop, and found this book informative for each of these packages. It covers the basics - how to create flat drawings from vests, skirts, shirts, dresses to pants, and then moves on to producing mood and design boards, visualizing your design ideas using Photoshop. The section on creating a digital portfolio is also vital in todays digital world. Plus it covers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.

It is well illustrated with great examples of flats, illustrations and fashion presentations from illustrators and designers in the fashion industry and from top fashion schools and universities globally.

I have always been a huge fan of Tom Tierneys ever since being given some of his paper dolls for Christmas one year and needless to say, it inspired me to pursue a career in fashion illustration. He can make satin look like satin, lace look like lace and furs look like fur. Its really impressive in doll form and even better in these great included cds!!! A must have for anyone who is a fan of the history of costume and design. I really wish he had one with even more modern fashions!

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource book for writers and graphic artists
This book and CD is another in the line of great royalty free works of images. This time, it's fashions from the great designers of women's wear 1950-2000, ranging from everyday wear to evening gowns.

These Dover book/CD ROMs are a graphic designers delight. It's so hard to find good quality graphics that are royalty free, and not end up spending a fortune. Dover has a good selection of royal free images that are presented in a book and are on CD ROM.

The images in the CD ROM is in full colour and so dazzling. 140 large images in TIFF format. Sharp images ready to use. Great for Paint Shop PRO. You don't have to scan, the images are there. You don't have to install some program. Just open them from you CR Rom Drive.

Great resources for writers looking for 50's, 60's and 70's fashions.

Product Description
This stunning two-volume book is the long-awaitedcatalogue of the exquisite collection of Ch'ing (Qing) dynastyimperial textiles and costumes from the collection of The MinneapolisInstitute of Arts. This collection has a rich history. Approximatelyhalf of it belonged to the San Francisco attorney William E. Colby, who had amassed the collection throughout the opportunistic decades ofthe 1920's and 1930's, and was acquired by The Minneapolis Instituteof Arts under the advice of Alfred Pillsbury. Now consisting of over600 items, it is considered one of the finest and most comprehensiveholdings of Ch'ing textiles outside of China.

Only a few works from the collection have been exhibited over the pastsix decades, including exhibitions at The Minneapolis Institute ofArts in 1943 and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1945, both curatedby Alan Priest. Not until 1977, the year in which the Asian Artsdepartment of The Minneapolis Institute of arts was established, wasthe entire collection been systematically supplemented, researched, and catalogued.

The 1991 exhibition, Imperial Silks of the Ch'ing Dynasty, displayedmore of the collection than ever before, and is the foundation of thispresent comprehensive catalogue written by Dr. Robert Jacobsen, themuseum's curator of Asian Art. Imperial Silks opens with an overviewof the archaeological record of silk in China and then divides themuseum's collection of Ch'ing dynasty textiles into nine chapters oftwenty-six basic categories of garments, decorative furnishings, andaccessories. Arranged chronologically by type, about two hundred ofthe primary objects are accompanied by technical analysis. A glossaryis also provided to clarify the terminology used for this study.

An indispensable reference for libraries, scholars, collectors, dealers, and interested individuals alike, this catalogue will furtherpromote our understanding of Chinese silk textiles, one of thatnation's great accomplishments and one of the world's foremostartistic legacies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous collection of imperial silks, beautifully presented
These 2 large and weighty volumes showcase the collection of imperial silks in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The core of the collection was accumulated by William Colby, a San Fransisco attorney, during the 1920s and 1930s. There are 592 items described in these books and each object is generally illustrated on a whole page. More than half of the textiles (normally silk or satin) are shown in high quality color photographs.

There was a strict delineation of the type of clothes worn by different stratas of Chinese society. This is borne out in the Minneapolis collection. A broad range of clothes as well as textiles are on view; robes, surcoats, religious attire, vests, aprons, hats, furniture covers, belts, pictoral hangings etc. Although I am no expert in this field, the vast majority of the items in the Minneapolis collection are attractive, colorful and interesting. Each item is annotated.

This beautiful set of books, luxuriously printed, has given me much pleasure over the years. It would be of great appeal to those interested in Chinese textiles and fabrics in general. Although the price seems expensive, I feel it presents good value. ... Read more
