Product Description
Challenging the notion that fashion and furniture were or are separate enterprises and distinct material aesthetic traditions, this collection focuses on three material and conceptual links central to understanding the relationship between interior design and fashion-the body, fabric, and space. The volume considers the changing visual, material and spatial character, methodological challenges posed by, and formal, political and historiographical significance of, a wide range of British, European and North American case studies since the eighteenth century. The volume's twelve case studies allow the reader to understand connecting notions behind the formation of interiors and fashionable clothing. The essays combine a wide range of significant and challenging new examples alongside powerful reversionary analyses of the various periods, artists, designers, and their best and significant objects."Fashion, Interior Design and the Contours of Modern Identity" is concerned not only with fabric, but also with the body and the implications of embodiment in the practices of both design domains which are equally invested in the comfort, aesthetic pleasure, extension and support of the body in different and yet seemingly identical ways. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars shirts and skirts galore
Loads of info on tops and skirts but not a thing on pants. Crazy man... Crazy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear illustrations, copious examples, bad puns
I encountered this book at the beginning of trying to teach myself clothing design, and found it immediately illuminating.

The book is divided into four sections: Bodice, Collar, Skirt, Sleeve. Using a series of pictorial examples, you are shown how to progress from the basic pattern through many, many variations, using dart movement and seams. Each example takes up a full page, with the minimum text needed and lots of illustrations. (Each example is given a punny name, such as "Seams to Me" or "Absence makes the Dart...Grow Yonder".)

The book starts with a section on the Bodice, covering close-fitting, loose-fitting, and flared versions. The Bodice section starts with a basic pattern, showing how a simple piece of fabric drapes across a bust form, and then showing the flat pattern version of the same thing. A series of examples then show you many ways to modify the basic pattern by moving darts, combining darts with seams, gathering excess fabric, and slashing and spreading the pattern. Each technique is shown by multiple examples, starting with the simplest changes and progressing to complex ones.

If you like learning by example, the detailed drawings in this book will make it very easy for you to learn flat pattern clothing design.

used to render fashion illustration. The book also benefits the advanced user by its exploration of concepts such as manipulating the figure, drawing draped garments, and creating flats. Using designer garments, Stipelman helps the student understand a specific concept, the designer and the garments place in the history of fashion. It is the author's belief that without knowledge of the past, it is impossible to design for the future. By the end of the book students will have an understanding of the concepts of fashion drawing, both basic and advanced techniques, of their own talents and goals, and a glimmer of their own personal style. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars College couse book for my daughter
My daughter was thrilled with the fast receiving of the book when ordered. She was estatic about how beautiful the book was and normally she would sell her books after her course, but she has decided to keep this one in her library.

Thanks I am always pleased how Amazon does business!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Helpful, Beautiful
Illustration Fashion: Concept to Creation appears to be popular with a wide range of students who are both beginners, intermediate students and advanced designers. This book offers a step-by-step approach to movement of designs from the croquis (base, working sketch) to the final copy. It has references to designs for facial and body features and it has detailed illustrations of a huge range of different pieces of clothings. Stipelman explains as well as gives examples of ways to successfully convey the mood of an outfit.

Overall - it's very handy. For advanced students, however, bear in mind that it would probably be more of a reference for you than anything. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a look at other books available here on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books for the subject
I found this book to be extremely helpful and useful, far superior than some I have encountered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner bookbut not the best for its price
I must admit that I am not too keen on this book. Although it doesn cover the basics of fashion illustration I just don't think its a great illustraton book. 4-0 out of 5 stars a must have book along with helen joseph armstrong
this book is not as detailed as helen joseph armstrong, but it serves the purpose of second reference material.it has photographs of how to take measurements on the body(missing in H.J.A) and illustrations for taking measurements on the stand.i had problems making the one darted basic bodice block using H.J.A,however on reading the instructions in this book, i realised that i was leaving out some tiny details like ease on the shoulder slope and like.i did have to alter my toile though, but it was a lot easier than the one i made using H.J.A. the part that i simply loved was the chapter on draping the basic 2 darted bodice and two darted skirt on the stand.this chapter is very detailed and explains the process through photos which is very helpful for the draping newbie. drafting the basic blocks like one darted bodice, basic sleeve, trousers, dartless jeans, one darted&double darted skirt block, one darted&double darted torso block, dartless torso block, jacket and coat blocks are all explained as well.all these i feel are necessary items in pattern cutting, however where it loses out is the fact that there are almost no variations given.instead it takes complete garments like a particular style of shirt(western stle) or trouser(like sailor pants) and gives you the construction process of the various components like sleeve, body, cuff, collar etc.buy it only if you find it difficult to follow instructions in H.J.A and as second reference

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplementary or 2nd pattern-drafting book
This is a great book for a more contemporary look at styles and pattern-drafting, highly relevant to 21rst-century designers. I would say this book does *not* stand alone....you need a drafting "bible" (such as Patternmaking for Fashion Design or Patternmaking Made Easy) to really make full use of this, because it is not organized in the way most drafting "bibles". Most drafting books are organized into chapters covering a specific topic (sleeves, collars, cuffs, etc), while this one presents whole projects (for example, a complete coat with cuffs, lining, pockets) to complete. This is a great way to see how all the design elements come together to form a total garment, but you need additional books because it does not cover ALL style details, some stuff is left out. Great book though!

3-0 out of 5 stars Would someone please review this book!?
Apologies for the fake rating. One can't post here without a rating. There should be a 'review requested' button or something.

I'd like to know how this title compares to Helen Joseph Armstrong's book. What does it cover differently? Does this book cover anything that Joseph Armstrong's book does not? For example, does it cover the pants sloper thoroughly and well? Are there errors?

I *have* the Joseph Armstrong, and would greatly value another approach/point of view -- or even a second way of presenting the same material; and would love some complementary information, as well. But I prefer to minimize exact repetition. This book is not cheap, but it is affordable, so I am considering it, but can't afford to buy 'blind'. HELP!

And - it would help my decision enormously if I could see the table of contents and index online. With more information, I might buy the book. Without it, I definitely will not. ... Read more

Product Description

An extraordinary story, Paul Poiret's 1931 autobiography describes the meteoric rise of a draper's son to become the "King of Fashion." From his humble Parisian childhood to his debut as a  couturier to his experiences during WWI, Poiret reveals all in this captivating tale. A remarkable testament to the energy of the Art Deco movement, Poiret's memoir recounts how his artistic flair, coupled with his exceptional and highly original cutting skills, enabled him to translate the spirit of the era into revolutionary garments. An astute businessman, Poiret describes the expansion of his fashion empire to encompass furniture, decor, and the first designer perfume, and recalls the extravagant Oriental garden parties at which his guests would parade his latest creations.

This book, out of print for decades, offers an evocative inside look at the life of a celebrated figure in fashion history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insight into the mind of a fashion icon
Written in Paul Poiret's hand, this is a great fun to read and gives good insight into his mind. The only wish I had was for more information on his demise in the fashion world. But, if you want to get into the mind of a great genius, then I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrapped inexoticism...
Written by the man himself in the afterlife of his amazing career, when he was no longer, famous, rich or married. This little book proves to be an excellent medium to witness the time when he almost singlehanded revolutioned fashion through banning the corset, bringing oriental, greek and exotic influences, and being thefirst fashion designer as we understand the term now.

He goes into great detail into his younger years when he met Mme. Cheruit and the famous J Doucet. Particularly about Chez Doucet, he explains the arrangement of the attelier in the change of century with the vendors, designers, chief of attelier, seamstress, and how the subtleness of this relations goes into the final garment.
When some years later he opens his own house, he brings all the time the process, from inspiration to cutting as the components of the final garment. Along appears his friends and acquaintances Iribe, Lepape. And also how he deals with Isadora Duncan, how he met with the Ballet Russes' Bakst. All the time making a point how he influenced them, not the other way around -in here we can have a skeptical eye...

When success came, he opens 'Le parfums Rosine' and the 'Atelier Martine', being the first couturier going into the scent business almost ten years before Chanel. -It exist an extraordinary book on this adventure Paul Poiret and His Rosine Perfumes, with hundreds of images-. The 'Martines' were the students of the Atelier, and it was sort of an art school meets interior design training, in here Poiret goes into great detail about how to develop creativity in children toward design.

In every work about Poiret we heard about his' one thousand and two nights party', but only here we have exact description of the menus, the amenities, the list of guest. The taste for the oriental and the exotic expands into his travels and he goes in detail when he goes to Morocco -as YSL would make many years later- and there some other chapters describing his long tours into United States.

These travels were as a conferencist and he make not only his impression but the actual transcription of some of the lectures, being of particular interest how he reflect in the fashion process and the way he had to foreseen the taste of people, even there at the dawn of fashion: trends and forecasting were important, even though at the end he wasn't able to understand new taste and that was the sign of his fall.

The last part of the book, unfortunately does not give more information about his debacle. He just say in few lines, he is now retired, now divorced, and dedicated to his painting. He is bitter, but that only is apparent in this last chapters. The main book is always light and happy. it has a little section with B&W photographs.

This self bio is part of a little collection the V&A made about fashion designers, Schiaparelli, Dior, Poiret and the sixties' Biba. I think the best are the Dior, and this Poiret's.It is highly recommended if you want to know about the designer, the man, but also as a way to see how they produced the idea of fashion in the beginning of the 20th century. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun with Fashion
This is the second Tom Tierney book that I have gotten. I find it fun and informative. It is so awesome to see how different styles develop, and this is a fun and easy way to do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Designs of the Seventies
Tom Tierney has recreated the designer fashions of the seventies in the paper doll book.If you love haute couture, you'll love this book (it doesn't feature the street or pop star fashion of the era).
The dolls resemble two of the most famous models of the decade, Beverly Johnson and Cheryl Tiegs (although this isn't mentioned in the notes), giving the book more authenticity.
The seventies was a decade of retro looks as well as styles inspired by exotic cultures. The styles of the thirties and forties are represented in this book, as are the famous Russian and Chinese designs by Yves-Saint Laurent.
The decade ended with a move toward more imposing almost futuristic styles, and these are well represented by outfits by Mugler and Montana.
My reason for not giving this book 5 stars is that the illustrations are not up to Tom Tierney's usual standard. ... Read more

The Complete History of Costume and Fashion is a comprehensive illustrated guide to the history of clothing and fashion. 3-0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings
So, I gave this book 3 stars because I couldn't figure out how to do 2 1/2. Mixed feelings. On the plus side, I really enjoyed the pictures and some of the book was informative.
On the minus side, I feel that the author may have just peiced this book together too quickly without doing her research. Some of her dates for different eras were wrong. And while she may have an interest in fashion, part of fashion history is HISTORY, which she doesn't seem to have a grasp on. This was evident in the beginning right from the chapter on egypt. I kept cringing every time she confused Nefertiti for Nefertari, it made me wonder what else in the book she got wrong.

I definately would not recomend this book to anyone that already has a lot of knowledge of fashion history, her inaccuracies will probably piss you off (and her partiality to Byzantium).
I also would not recomend this book if you are just getting started in studying fashion history because why start out with misinformation.
But if you are like me, neither an expert or compkete novice, you don't work in the industry, like me you are just obsessed with clothes, and if you find this book on sale for less than 5 dollars, have at it(really, don't pay more than 5).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Colorful and Bright
This book is a truly dazzling feast for the eyes and would be a perfect addition to anyone's coffee table collection.I bought this booking thinking that it was more like a textbook and have found it to be much much more.Full size colorful illustrations make for very interesting and stimulating viewing.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst I've ever seen
The information is just plain wrong in hundreds of instances and the images and text are frequently not connected. In general if a book says it is a Complete History of Costume from the dawn of time to yesterday, it is probably to be avoided, but this one is truly, truly bad!

1-0 out of 5 stars There is nothing complete about this book.
The most complete book of History of Costume I have found is "Survey of Historic Costume" by Phyllis Tortora and Keith Eubank. The title of this book "The Complete..." and the lack of content simple don't belong together.

This book is a beginners basic introduction to costume. It needs to be reviewed and mistakes need to be fixed.

2-0 out of 5 stars didn't like it
There are cool pictures and all but seriously you cannot cover the whole egyptian, etruscan, greek...periods in 3-4 pages. The book plainly describes what people were wearing in these periods (and it does not give you the complete info) and it does not tell you much about the story behind these costumes which I found pretty lame. ... This comprehensive reference provides hands-on techniques for created posed figures for fashion illustration. The first section illustrates various examples of nude and semi-nude poses (male and female). Later chapters illustrate the same poses wearing sportswear, sleepwear, dresses, suits, trousers, and casual and evening wear. The poses in each chapter are organized to show a progression including seated model (crossed legs, straight legs, seated on chair, seated on the floor); standing model (frontal view, three-quarter view, side-view from the back with crossed legs and straight legs); and moving model (running, walking, dancing). Each chapter begins with an introduction which is followed by images with detailed explanatory captions. With a focus on shape and form, the content covers marker and pencil techniques for a complete range of illustrated poses.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Best Illustrations are on the Cover
I was very disappointed with the quality of illustration in this book. Each page had 3 of the same figure; just detailed in different ways.I am certainly not a professional illustrator, but I have seen better illustration work from the freshman class at Mass. College of Art in Boston.Very loose drawings here and many ugly faces.I returned it as it was not what it appeared to be.The best illustrations in this book were on the Cover.

I have always been a huge fan of Tom Tierneys ever since being given some of his paper dolls for Christmas one year and needless to say, it inspired me to pursue a career in fashion illustration. He can make satin look like satin, lace look like lace and furs look like fur. Its really impressive in doll form and even better in these great included cds!!! A must have for anyone who is a fan of the history of costume and design. I really wish he had one with even more modern fashions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best artist of paper dolls I have ever seen!
I have both paper doll books (Princess Diana and Prince Charles Fashion Paper Dolls in Full Color; and Diana, Princess of Wales, Paper Doll: The Charity Auction Dresses [Paper Doll Series]) by Tom Tierney.I love his artistry and his attention to detail.I got the Charity Auction paper doll book as a gift and searched for more finding the first paper doll book that also included Prince Charles.I added both books to my scrapbook on Diana - I still love looking at these pages. They are both excellent as are all the paper doll books he produces.I also have books by Tom Tierney on Pope John Paul II, Jackie Kennedy Onasis, and one with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.I would encourage anyone interested in collecting, using the books for school reports, or finding your favorite subject in paper dolls, to look for this artist. He does excellent work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Belle Epoque
Anyone who loves fashion history will enjoy this book. The illustrations are evocative of the lives of fashionable women 100 years ago.
I especially liked the dolls themselves, clad in faithful depictions of the underwear of the era.
The selection of costumes is superb. It is clear to see the development of women's dress from 1899 until 1919, from heavily corseted hourglass figures laden with ruffles, lace and embroidery, to the fantasies of the early teens and finally the simplification of dress leading up to the 1920-s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful graphics
This is a wonderful paper doll book.Book gives a bit of history regarding the dresses in the book.Illustrations are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful fashions from the Belle Epoque
This is one of the most beautiful sets of paper dolls I have, well drawn with great attention to detail and short historical notes on each dress inside the back cover. There are a lot of costumes in this book, aboutthirty, and two beautiful dolls. It covers fashion from 1890 to 1919, withdresses from great designers like Worth and Paquin.Tom Tierney's paperdolls are wonderful, and this is one of his best. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Love For Sewing
Love the book! Everything is simple and easy to follow. And if there's something that you don't quite understand, the author is available to you via email! It only takes her a day or so to reply.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not metric
Yes its my own fault i should have checked the reviews more thoroughly before buying this book, but i only seemed to read the positive ones.Book is very thorough, and has ALOT of info, but it ISN'T in metric, which is REALLY disappointing. And even though i can probably apply the same formula, the effort in converting into metric just makes me want to close it and put it back on the shelf. If your used to working in feet/inches I think it would be a great book to buy....if not, save your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth investing on for a lifetime of fashion design and pattermaking!
I ordered this book and it came in perfect condition. i love that this was a rare hardcover bound edition because my college only sell the ones in a binder which rips so easily. This makes my book stand a part from others because it looks a lot more expensive. The Drawings in the book are very nice and modernized and they are fairly easy to understand for pattern students. The designs featured are actually pretty stylish, unlike old books with 50's styles that no one wear now a day. The DVD wasn't super helpful and only includes additional stuff the book didn't cover. Love it overall and plan to keep this the rest of my career in fashion design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for creating commercial designs
This book is helpful in guiding first time commercial pattern making. It gives suppliers and necessary equipment.I will definately keep it as a reference book.It is written at a very high level of instructions.Sometimes it takes me several readings to understand with the instructions.I have sewn for 40 years, and have a good knowledge basis, and this book is teaching me quite a bit.Very helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pattern Making for Fashion Design

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift ....
My girlfriend's daughter is a fashion-designer-hopeful and she thought this was a wonderful book and keeps it with her almost all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I was doing a sewing course and I ordered this book to start learning how to sketch my ideas for skirt and blouse designs. Easy to follow illustrations and no frills instructions make me rate this book very highly. I am a beginner with no design experience and very little aptitude for drawing. However I was able to use this book and started sketching basic designs in no time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not current in drawing style.
I bought this book a while back based on the stars and reviews but was actually really disappointed. Why? If you go to art schools that push fashion design as a major that work with actual major clothing labels... the drawings you see being cranked out of the top schools do not look like this.I actually recommend Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques by Naoki Watanabe.I had a chance to actually look at it at the art store down the street from my art school which is cranking out fashion designers for the actual job market.

I teach drawing to students between 3rd grade on up to high school.I have been buying books to expose my students to the various art industries and what they are looking for now so they can get themselves a head start if they so choose such careers later in their lives. This book was perfect and great when if first came out, but things have changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Fashion Drawing Guide
My daughter has an interest in Fashion Design. She has been sketching her own clothing designs since she was 8yrs old.Now she's almost 15 and this book has helped her to understand some of the basics. If I hadn't been able to view a few of the pages before purchasing, chances are I probably wouldn't have choose this book... But I'm glad I did.

Product Description
A comprehensive, visually-led overview that covers all areas of fashion drawing, presentation, and illustration, Fashion Illustrator both teaches students how to draw the fashion figure and provides an extended showcase of established and emerging illustrators.

From initial inspiration through to finished illustration, the book teaches the student how to draw from life and accurately depict body proportions, and also includes advice on exaggerating proportions for effect. A technical chapter outlines the use of different media, showing students how to use color, and features techniques for rendering different materials and patterns. Dedicated tutorials explore both digital and traditional media (Illustrator, Photoshop, photo-montage, mixed media, drawing, ink, embroidery) through the work of leading fashion illustrators, giving the student the confidence to experiment with different illustrative styles.

Later chapters outline the history of both twentieth-century and contemporary fashion illustration, and profile influential fashion illustrators and other industry professionals, with interviews providing an insight into life after graduation. There is also guidance on careers for the fashion illustrator, portfolio presentation, and working with an agent. ... Read more
