3-0 out of 5 stars cool
this book is useful to those starting out in modeling. if you already have a contract i wouldnt reccomend it so much, but it has useful tips throughout, and anecdotes from real life models

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book!
A must have for anyone who is wanting to become a model. This book offers insight information that is both vital and informative. The authors, Eric Bean and Jenni Bidner illustrate this book with fantastic photographs and beautifully written compositions of what should be expected by models and what is expected of them. I absolutely love this book and recommend that anyone who is even faintly interested in the subject manner should read this book. It is truely a fascinating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the basics of what it takes to become a model
It's fitting that art and crafts book publisher Lark Books should then move to a book on photographic modeling, Complete Guide For Models: Inside Advice From Industry Pros: it's a logical transition and offers the power of an art book publisher paired with the expertise of a fashion photographer and fashion editor. Models will learn all the basics of what it takes to become a model for the artist; from posing for commercial print ads to special opportunities for men, women and child models. Complete Guide For Models could have easily been featured in our 'Business and Careers' section, but is profiled here so artists and art library holdings will catch sight of it: it's an important, recommended instructional guide for the reference collections of artschool, artists and sculptors.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved the interview with Supermodel, Carmen Dell'Orefice.
It was really informative hearing from a model who has modeled for 50+ years. I recently saw Carmen Dell'Orefice in a runway show in NYC, and she looks great. Great interview, great photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned alot from this book
I live in a small town in California, and i want to be a model. I always dreamed of going to NYC and being a runway model. I asked a few of the agencies in nearby towns, but they didnt know much about NYC. I got this book, and it answered alot of questions i had about modeling. The modeling schools near me charged alot of money, to take classes, but i learned just as much from this book. I can't wait to go to NYC now. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that special...
i wasn't very impressed.i bought the book for an airplane ride and was very disappointed to find how often the author wrote (these are examples) "you can find great ones online" or "skin care tips online" or "list of top best photogs worldwide online."i didn't have a computer and i wanted to know what they were talking about.if you don't have access to a computer 24/7 this book is not for you.EVEN if you have access to a computer 24/7 this book is not for you cause than you CAN look it all up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Model & Talent 2001
I think this book can help me a lot for what i want to do in my career because i had always wanted to be a model. People always say that i should be a model because of my body and beauty i really want to get into a school of modeling but i dont know which one i cant find one right now i'm 16 yrs old and i want to start now. So i wish to order that book to know whats up in modeling.
Thank You

1-0 out of 5 stars Runway, Runway, Runway
This book concentrates both in text and photographs, on runway modeling. Generally, runway models (outside small towns) are models who have already 'made it' in print modeling (editorial and advertising). This book is sorely lacking in the fundamentals of modeling -- like finding out where you fit and where your potential lies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Modeling Career
Because I am in New york I have a lot of chances to get into the modeling world. Finally I have a good guide to help me get started. I especially love the runway photos which are exciting and very well done. This is agreat book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Really Recommend this book.Excellent!
For someone who lives in a country outside the United States,it is a good thing to find a book like this one which emphasizes theuse of the Internet to find out about the modeling business. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about becoming a model but does not know where to start. There is so much info in it, that having used only a tenth of it, and I'm already happy with my investment. ... Read more

Book Description
Black models are living proof that beauty is more than skin deep.

Skin Deep brings readers face to face with some of the most beautiful women in the world: Black models. For the past 50 years they have redefined beauty, fashion, and style in dramatic ways. Each era would exalt its star models: Dorothea Towles, Helen Williams, Naomi Sims, Beverly Johnson, Iman, Naomi Campbell, and Tyra Banks, among them. Less well known are the many other talented, elegant women who enjoyed careers as well. At every level of achievement, however, they all confronted challenges testing their courage, endurance, and integrity. How they succeeded - and sometimes failed - is thecompelling essence of
Skin Deep.

Only an insider could tell the story of Black models with the authenticity it deserves. Barbara Summers, a Ford model for 17 years, spent a decade interviewing dozens of models and fashion professionals on three continents to record their experiences. With insight and flair, she gives voice to familiar faces. With an artist's eye, she pored over hundreds of images by the world's most acclaimed photographers to select the more than 250 pictures that make this volume a landmark publication.Black models transformed the fashion industry.

Popular culture around the world would neverbe the same again. Beyond advertisements for clothes and cosmetics, they projected visions of a far more precious but far less tangible product: freedom. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious, but ultimately disappointing
The author has spent admirable energy collecting images, interviews, and historical data. But she has been ill-served by her editor and publisher. The text and images are made incoherent by not having been shaped, as if the author's note cards had spilled on to the page in no particular order (a simple chronological narrative might have been best). Sadly, the result is a book about beauty that is not beautiful. The publisher seems not to have hired a book designer; the images neither flow esthetically nor relate integrally to the text. Even the index shows lack of care for the material, with the font unadjusted to distinguish between pages with images and those containing only text. Black beauty deserves better than this. And yet, since this is the only book of its kind, it is still worth buying... It is a joy to see these fantastic women all in one place. Kudos to Barbara Summers for introducing them to each other and to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, comprehensive and enlightening
This is a first and the most compelling, comprehensive and enligtening book on the subject.I applaud the author and publisher for their vision, tenacity and courage. A must for every library.Kudos!!

1-0 out of 5 stars It is called a writing class and the author missed it.
I was very excited to read this book and I was highly disappointed. The content was great but the editor and author needs to be slapped. The layout was ridiculously confusing, the chapters had no flow, pictures didn't correspond with the stories, some of the interviews bordered on the foolish, etc.... The was a two paragraph mention about black male models.what about children models? What about the effects of we are portrayed in advertisements through history? Where is the history? A chronological timeline? I've read articles in white mags about black models that gave more information that this book.Don't buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE THAN BEAUTIFUL! EXCEPTIONALLY GORGEOUS!
I loved this book from front to back. It gave me an inside perspective on how black models are treated in the fashion industry. After being brain washed and white washed by dozens of "Vogue,""Glamour," and "Cosmo" magazines, I had lost sight ofhow beautiful and elegant black models/women are. This is unfortunate buttrue and can only account for the racist attitudes and standards thatWestern society (especially America) has against ethnic (African, Asian,Latin, and Native American Indian) beauty. Ethnic beauty is copied andexploited. You can see it in every page of the most popular fashionmagazines. I also readEileen Ford's comment about this book. She waswrong wasn't she. Thank you for writing this book Ms. Summers. It isunquestionably a work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Modeling doyenne Eileen Ford once told the author that a book about Blackmodels would be a short one. Skin Deep is most certainly not. This book isfilled with the history of beautiful Black women who have made an impact onthe world of style. It was a long time coming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK THAT TURNED THE INDUSTRY UPSIDE DOWN
Had the modeling industry edited this book it never would have gone to press as it is. It reveals the truth about agencies, the little ones, the big ones--and the obvious and not so obvious aspects of an industry that thrives off of young men and women with big dreams. The coverage of modeling in Italy is especially true to life. This book was used as evidence in a court case that changed the way agencies are allowed to treat models, what they are permitted to charge them for inclusion in agency books, for model cards, and even how much of a cut they are allowed to take from a model's earnings. Some agencies went under because of the secrets so innocently revealed in these pages. Lots of excellent practical advice too. Easily the best book in the business even if it is not so recent as some other books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aspiring Model
I am impressed with the amount of information this book gave. It really guides you step by step & made me realize that even though I'm short(5'2), I can still make it in beauty, print, petite & junior/teen modeling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic advice.... little real information..
This book had no real advice. Most of it was just common sense advice any person shold know. Seemed geared for 15 year old girls only.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little substance.
Essentially this book, with its large fonts and generous helpings of superfluous pictures, contained scant information about the modeling industry. The pages are just filled with very shallow and unsubstantiated statements such as, "Your agent will navigate your career, setting in motion a business and promotional plan geared to market fully your unique looks and talent", with no further elaboration.Take for example its chapter on "Ethinic Modeling".It glazes over the subject on how its such a promising area of the industry and tops it off with two short interviews with 2 female black models - 7 pages in all, with plenty of pictures might I add.The interviews themselves were just as disappointing with superficial statements of little substance that only glamorizes the modelling industry. Above all, the author insults the reader's intelligence by shamelessly pitching the Wilhelmina modeling agency almost every other page.In fact, the entire book's message boils down to - try to sign up with an model agency (no less the Wilhelmina) and expect a 20% commission rate. Those who have rated this book 5 stars are obviously the author or Wilhemlmina employees.

2-0 out of 5 stars this is why models have management
Like many models getting started in the business, I didn't know which way to turn. The hardest part is to qualify clients and to only work with those that will keep the image of you that you would like to promote in the market place. This book really doesn't outline this aspect of the industry.Good management is what got me a blossoming career in this business. Thanks to Digital White Boy Management, http://www.digitalwhiteboy.com , I've made it in this industry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for a Modeling Career
My son is an aspiring model and actor. We attended a very informative class that featured Mr. Marcus. He covered a wealth of information on how to succeed as a professional model - things that it may have taken years for us to learn on our own. There was so much information that we felt that his book was a must.We refer to it often and recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource!
I would highly reccomend this book to anyone starting out in the commercial modeling industry. It is a must have as far as industry handbooks! I followed Aaron's advice and got all of my daughter's photo shoots and headshots done free of charge. This saved us a lot of money in building her portfolio and it also allowed her to gain experience as a model. As a result, the photographers have since used her for paying jobs and it helped pave the way for other commercial work. I would not have known how to go about this if it had not been for this book. Aaron was also extremely helpful in taking the time to answer all of my emails personally whenever I had further questions regarding how to create a resume, finding a good agent, model release forums, etc. We also had the opportunity to go to one of Aaron's seminars, which was fantastic! If you ever get the chance to go, I would highly reccomend it!! He has so much insight and knowledge about the industry.

Thanks for all of your help Aaron!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are interested in commerical modeling, then this book is for you
I read this book hoping that it would give me some insight into the field that I was embarking on. I found the book to be an easy reader. I read it in 2 days because I am just getting my modeling career started. The book gives practical and realistic advice. Because the book was written by a model, the information to me seemed very relevant. The book is written as if Aaron is actually talking with you face to face. He is very real, direct, and straight to the point with his tactics to help you getstarted in the modeling industry. I knew I liked the author immediately when I saw how heused "thinking outside the box" tactics to get work.

As a result, of reading the books I have tried some of his methods; and it has worked. Currently, I am signed with three agencies because I followed the directions in the book. If that is not enough, I took the initiative to e-mail Aaron ( heck, I sent him my Comp Card);and he e-mailed me back and gave me some great constructive criticism. Even though, he was on his way to NY he still took the time to e-mail me back and he insisted that he would e-mail me with more in depth comments about my shots when he returned. Well, he returned and I got an e-mail from him. It really meant a lot to me because I was like holy smoke the author really cares about his readers. In addition, he has an informative website " how to model.com" that can be very helpful to new models.
This is a must for any new commercial model.

Thanks AAron,

Cheli

5-0 out of 5 stars Aaron Marcus knows the ropes
Aaron Marcus knows the ropes and has a much more rare commodity, he is willing to share his knowledge of a complex, competitive and challenging industry.Read "How to be a Successful Commercial Model" and learn how to from a pro who really does know.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that great, but what else is there?
I wish there was a good book about commercial modelling out there. I guess this is as good as it gets, its a little helpful. And yeah, I think its a little suspicous that every one who liked the book says its the greatest book ever, without saying one bad thing about it, and almost all of them are other authors or anonymous or at least have'nt commented on any other books but this one. ... The fact that the majority of today's sucessful black models started at black agencies, and there's a listing of them in this book. It was helpful, but if you're already established as a model, it may seem redundant.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is for young women and men...
This book would be a good reference for high school aged young women and men who are trying to consider what career to go into.As for an adult who wants to know other career options available in the beauty or fashion industry, outside of "wig stylist", "manicurist" or "shampoo girl" this book is not for you.

I was expecting more of an inside view of various careers in the beauty and fashion industry.Careers outside of the norm, like maybe "Jewelry Buyer", "Fashion Consultant" or something. This book was really of no help to me at all.
