Editorial Review

Product Description
"Poetry," wrote Wordsworth, "is the breath and finer spirit of all knowledge; it is the impassioned expression which is the countenance of all Science." Robert Pack's new book is a heady mixture of the finer spirit.

A selection from his last five books, along with a collection of new poems, Fathering the Map takes us from the personal reflections distilled in the lyrics of Waking to My Name (1980) to the worldly reckonings of Inheritance (1992) and back again. In the dramatic monologues of Faces in a Single Tree (1984), in the narrative of a wayward life from womb to double ending in Clayfield Rejoices, Clayfield Laments (1987), in a cosmic tour conducted by the physicist Heinz Pagels with Before It Vanishes (1990), Pack has fashioned poems of intimate experience, scientific meditations, philosophical wonder, poems that breathe the knowledge of man and woman, young and old, artist and human animal.

Pack's work has won the acclaim of writers, critics, and readers from Robert Penn Warren to Cynthia Ozick to Stephen Jay Gould, who comments that the "precious contacts of science and poetry are now sadly rare, but Bob Pack revitalizes the ancient union with incisive poems that sing with lyricism or bite with insight--but always seem to add wisdom to the scientist's epigram."

"The poet improves his style and spirit as he extends his reach," Howard Nemerov has written, and in his new work Pack reaches back to some of his earliest memories, and so forward to a personal mythology that circles from the primal instant to the present ecological crisis."Robert Pack's poetry is deeply rooted in his won family life," Richard Wilbur has remarked, "and yet his imagination has always included us all."

And Cynthia Ozick has said of Pack's poetry: "We rejoice as we read." ... Read more

Product Description
Situated Fathering proposes a new theoretical framework for studying how various contingencies of physical space, in conjunction with social/symbolic issues, affect men's identities as fathers and their involvement with children. Written largely for family scholars and students by an interdisciplinary team of leading scholars, this distinct volume of original research explores fathers in a wide range of physical and social spaces. Contributors outline directions for theoretically guided research in specific, often gendered fathering sites. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Russ Castronovo underscores the inherent contradictions between America's founding principles of freedom and the reality of slavery in a book that probes mid-nineteenth-century representations of the founding fathers. He finds that rather than being coherent and consensual, narratives of nationhood are inconsistent, ambivalent, and ironic. He examines competing expressions of national memory in a wide range of mid-nineteenth-century artifacts: slave autobiography, classic American fiction, monumental architecture, myths of the Revolution, proslavery writing, and landscape painting.Castronovo theorizes a new American cultural studies which takes into consideration what Toni Morrison calls the "Africanist presence" that permeates American literature. He presents a genealogy that recovers those members of the national family whose status challenges the body politic and its history. The forgotten orphans in Melville's Moby-Dick and Israel Potter, the rebellious slaves in the work of Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown, the citizens afflicted with amnesia in Lincoln's speeches, and the dispossessed sons in slave narratives all provide dissenting voices that provoke insurrectionary plots and counter-memories. Viewed here as a miscegenation of stories, the narrative of "America" resists being told of an intelligible story of uncontested descent. National identity rests not on rituals of consensus but on repressed legacies of parricide and rebellion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fathering the nation
This book has some of the most astutue readings of narrative in the antebellum period that I've encountered. Whether it's narrative as national narrative or narrative as architecture or narrative as Melville novel, Castronovo's study argues for a compelling and materially specific reading of the plots that constitute and make problematic nationalism.

4-0 out of 5 stars interdisciplinary melville
This book has been out for a few years and am finally getting around to reading it.I was quite impressed because of its ability to situate Melville in an interdisciplinary cultural context that includes architecture, political ortaory, ethnological debates, etc. It's a really helpful (though overpriced) volume in understanding antebellum narrative in light of vexing national questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book
"FAthering the Nation" is dazzling in its range of subjects--Melville, Cooper, Douglass, Lincoln, political culture, architecture, political oratory--and the way it combines them.It offerssharp analytic tools for interpreting literature and culture in theantebellum period.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's awful.
In this work, Castronovo seems intent on fitting the larger facts of history into his personal PC matrix--a particularly appalling and self-righteous view of the world.Using words he doesn't quite seem toknow the meaning of in what seems a desperate measure to impress, the worklingers limply to a conclusion that leaves the reader where she/he startedfrom: a sense that Castronovo takes himself all too seriously and isincredibly anxious to prove his intellectual credentials.Has all themarks of "written to secure tenure." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Biblical Resource
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was refreshing to read something so biblically based. The question of whether or not there are apostles in the church today is a controversial topic but Scheidler handles it well. He goes to the Scriptures and shows that the ministry of the apostle is to continue throughout the church age. In this book the author also presents the ministry of the apostle as that of a servant and not a lord. This the best book that I have read so far concerning the ministry of apostles. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most insightful
This is one of the most insightful books I have read on the subject of apostle. It is very accurate and leaves little room if any to argue to the contrary.I highly recommend this book to those seeking an understanding of the apostolic. ... Read more
