Product Description
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by pain in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Other symptoms include fatigue, sleep problems, allergies, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, morning stiffness and problems with short term memory and concentration. Increasing recognition of fibromyalgia means that diagnosis and treatment are increasingly likely, but self-help is still key. As well as tried and tested advice on how to reduce pain, boost energy levels and help with regular sleep, this new edition includes the latest in treatments, such as the popular therapy guaifenesin (sic). It also looks at how pain is experienced, explores the possibility that fibromylagia may be due to a rogue gene, and clarifies the difference between fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.Other topics include: * fibromyalgia and immune dysfunction* links with hypothyroidism * psychotherapy* the vital importance of low-impact aerobic exercise such as walking, cycling or swimming diet* illustrated posture and exercise advice * pain and stress management* complementary therapies 'Having managed her own fibromyalgia, Christine now passes her experience and knowledge on to others so that they do not have to spend their precious time researching what she has already done. Progress has been made over the last few years and more medical professionals are recognising the symptoms, but there are still many who lack the knowledge to diagnose and treat fibromyalgia effectively. At present there are no national guidelines for treatment. This is one reason this book is so vital to those with fibromyalgia their families, friends and employers.' 5-0 out of 5 stars This great book has helped turn my life around!
This book was me. It described my symptoms exactly, explaining the intricacies of the condition in an easy-to-understand, down-to-earth way. At last I knew what was going on in my body, and at last I could begin to take action, for, as well as factual information and resource data, this book is full of great suggestions. The chapter on pain and stress management has been particularly useful, and is explained in such a comforting, caring way that it had me riveted. I am now in much less pain because of this book. Not only that, I have the confidence to deal with different situations and recently even went on my first holiday abroad for ten years! Thankyou for helping me to turn my life around, Christine!

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly excellent and comprehensive read
As a sufferer of fibromyalgia syndrome who has fought it alone the holistic way (with considerable success) for over four years, I was intrigued when I spotted this book. Initially, I was somewhat put off by the title, as I did not want to have to 'live with' fibromyalgia - I wanted to get rid of it...However, I soon revised my opinion, as I found it to be a truly excellent and comprehensive read for anyone with any interest at all in this debilitating, painful and miserable syndrome - especially those who are prepared to help themselves)for there is no magic answer to it. I have always maintained that any chronic disease (fibromyalgia included) represents a breakdown of health, Christine Craggs-Hinton explains just what is known about this syndrome, and then takes the reader through the various forms of treatment available - including (most importantly) a range of self-help measures to help rebuild the health - before going on to give sensitive tips on how to cope physically, mentally and emotionally with this invisible disease, in a fluent, positive and immensely readable way. 'Living with Fibromyalgia' - and fighting back too, in fact. I was particularly pleased to find a chapter on 'complementary therapies', and also one on diet - the foundation to fighting any disease, in my opinion. A really 'holistic' and informative book, which I cannot recommend too highly. Thankyou, Christine!

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive fibromyalgia self-help guide
As the author of Living with Fibromyalgia, I am testament to my self-help approach. Five years ago I was almost permanently bed-bound and in terrible pain. My husband had to do everything for me, including feeding me, washing me and brushing my hair. However, I am now able to sit at my computer for four hours a day, I can do light jobs around the house, I can take short walks, and I have much of my social life back! Unfortunately, substantial improvements are not gained via the doctor's prescription pad, they depend largely upon the individual's own efforts and choices. The book, then, carries the very latest research findings. It also considers the possible causes of the condition. The style and format not only ensure readers secure a better understanding of fibromyalgia, but also that they will learn how best to reduce the effects of the condition. Areas covered are the disorders commonly associated with fibromyalgia; medication; diet and the digestive system - including how chronic candida infections can cause many fibromyalgia symptoms; posture and exercise; complementary therapies known to be useful in treating the condition; pain management techniques, and finally a sensitive chapter addressing in detail the emotional consequences of fibromyalgia and how best to deal with them. The book has been endorsed by leading fibromyalgia experts in the UK. ... Read more

If you're struggling with fibromyalgia or CFS, this book can help you. It offers an evidence-based improvement program that can help you achieve a healthy balance between activity, rest, and leisure-a balance that can significantly reduce pain and fatigue and increase your energy. He then goes on to show how the seven step lifestyle balance program can help you to function and feel better. In step one, you'll learn how to use active relaxation techniques to lessen ongoing stress. Better sleep, anger management, and activity pacing make up steps two, three, and four. Step five focuses on overcoming worry and guilt, and you'll learn how low-effort pleasurable activities can ease pain and fatigue in step six. Finally, in step seven, the importance of finding and maintaining personal support is covered. This effective lifestyle-focused program has brought relief to many others like you who have struggled with these misunderstood illnesses-illnesses that modern medicine cannot cure. 1-0 out of 5 stars Blaming the victim
Attributing an illness to a "personality type" has as much validity as blaming evil spirits or original sin. Whether you believe in karma, voodoo, or "personality types", the fact is that none of these cause diseases. So, why does Fred Friedberg claim on page 24 that those who have CFS and FM are "hard driving" individuals, whose character traits "play an important role in the onset and persistence of these illnesses"? This is pure hogwash. If a "hard driving" personality can cause CFS, what is the character trait of people who get the flu? How about the character trait of oysters that get cancer? Do they have "overbooked lives"? Think about it for a minute.

Equally silly is the claim that "stress" causes CFS/FM. The studies that Friedberg cites, in which people with CFS reported "stress" in the year before falling ill, have no control groups. If you asked any random group of Americans if they experienced "stress" during the previous year, 90% of them would say "yes." Stress, particularly physical stress, will worsen CFS, but this has nothing to do with causation. (Diseases are not caused by stress. They are caused by pathogens.)

In 2006, when this book was published, CFS had long been established as a neuro-immunological illness with a viral etiology. But while Friedberg mentions that overactivity in the RNase L pathway (indicative of viral infections) is linked to CFS symptoms, he then goes on to claim that correcting "personality traits" can lessen the severity of the illness. Friedberg's ability to talk out of both sides of his mouth is only matched by his disregard for basic biology. The failure of Cognitive Behavior Therapy to improve a single CFS symptom stands as proof that viruses don't give a hoot about personality factors.

The truly ironic thing about this book is that it was published the same year that Sophia Mirza died of CFS. Hers was the first recorded death in the UK officially attributed to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But in reality Sophia was killed by psychologists who stuck her in a mental institution rather than treat her illness. Sophia's autopsy revealed damage to 80% of the dorsal ganglia in her spinal column due to widespread inflammation. (Damage to the dorsal ganglia would account for most CFS symptoms.) Perhaps Fred can explain how a "type A personality" can destroy 80% of a person's spinal cord. (No doubt he'd claim the destruction was due to "catastrophizing.")

If you have been diagnosed with CFS, don't waste your energy reading this book. Get a copy of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Treatment Guide instead. And, for the sake of your health, avoid pop psychologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Live With My Limitations
I got hold of this book by chance; a friend of mine had seen an article on it along with an interview of the author and it was given as a gift to me. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia almost ten years ago after some back surgeries and subsequent infections. Like everyone else who deals with Chronic Fatigue or Fibro, I refused to believe that it would limit me in any way. But as the years went by, I went from rebelling to retreating into my house and not participating in life. I had to stop working. I couldn't participate in my kids school trips or PTA as I had before. I couldn't run/walk/jog/bike/hike like I had. How could I do anything but give up?

This book was a light for me in what I thought would be the dismal remaining years of my life. It gave me basic, good information to increase my overall health, stamina and ensure that I was at the most fit I could be despite the constraints of my illness. I would recommend that any person newly diagnosed, or even, as in my case, any person that has had a chronic fatiguing illness for years, should have this book in their library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much help for me , I'm afraid
I really didn't see much in this book that I didn't see on the CFS web site or the CDC or pro health web sites.

I'll grant you, I am quite ill with both FMS and CFS , absolutely homebound with the CFS, so maybe I'm not grasping all the author is trying to convey.

Maybe if ever I don't feel so foggy or even as debilitated as I do now, I will reread this book and find what I so obviously missed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much new...
There is not much new in this book for a long-time FM patient like me.I was disappointed.I expected a newly-published book to contain more new information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real help for CFS/FM sufferers. An awesome book!
I have had CFS/FM for 18 years. I was 29 when it first hit me. I have suffered incredibly all these years. Relapse and recessions over and over again. I've been unable to work. Been in denial all these years, beating myself up thinking it will one day just disappear. Put my life on hold. Felt guilty I wasn't able to socialize as I wanted etc. I have been feeling pretty hopeless after another bad bout. Then, this book was given to me as a gift.Dr. Friedberg, who also, has CFS and suffered for many years, writes in an easy to understand format, with compassion and experience of discovering how to cope with CFS and lead a happier life. The 7 steps DO work! I highly recommend reading it or give it to someone you love you has it.I have researched tons of things about CFS, but I have never understood it like I do now. I have never understood how I can help myself feel better and keep my symptoms at bay. A definite 5 star review. Wonderfully written. ... Read more

Product Description
Fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain from muscle trigger points, and chronic fatigue syndrome are often seen as interchangeable conditions. Nothing could be further from the truth--however, they do often coexist. Knowing what you have will help you in determining the right treatment.

Written by a registered nurse with these three disorders, and a psychologist who has been treating chronic pain since 1994, this book presents an integrative approach. The authors understand these conditions are not curable, but they provide a thorough guide for treatment options that can benefit you. They answers questions like:

How can I be more than a bystander in my own care?
Why is proper documentation in my medical record important?
How are FM, CFID and CMP different,  how do they cross over and why should I know?
What are common co-existing conditions and what conditions mimic or aggravate mine?
How do I communicate my needs and symptoms successfully?
Where is that word I had two seconds ago?
What different forms of exercise are available for my specific needs?
How do I write a poem or meditate and why is the feedback to my brain important?
Why do some treatments make me worse when everyone swears they will make me better?
What should I look for in the "right" doctor?
What are my patient rights?
What foods should I avoid, and why?
Why should safe use of medications, herbal remedies and supplements  concern me?
Why can't I sleep, what can I do?
What is a flare, and how do I deal with crisis?'
Why don't my family and friends understand?
How do I assess and document the effectiveness of treatments, and medications?
What are the different types of bodywork, and who provides it?
What are the dos and don'ts of exercise?
How big is big brother?
How can I help my doctor overcome fear of prescribing the medications I need?
How do I write my thoughts and feelings down, and why is it important to me?
How do I apply for the benefits I need, what are they looking for?
What is an appeals process?
How do I get my needs met at work?
Why is nurturing my spiritual side important?
How can I resist isolation and feel empowered?
How do I accept what has happened to me and maintain forward momentum? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lotus Guide magazine
For many diseases in our world, we are finally learning that treatments using only allopathic or only homeopathic remedies are seldom the best approach in and of themselves. Much of the confusion has come from the polarized arguments of both sides attempting to defend their points of view, but like most truths the answers are often found in the middle ground, hence "integrative medicine." I found this book, at 448 pages, to be very comprehensive and I highly recommend it for anyone searching for a balanced approach for the treatment of these diseases.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
One of the best books on the subject. It was almost as if it was written from my own experiences.
I connected with everything they spoke of. I absolutely am keeping it for my reference when ever Ineed to speak to my doctor or I need validation. It made me feel good that there was absolutely another person going through what I'm going through with this devastating disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Integrative Therapies for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Myofascial Pain
Based upon my own personal experiences, I know that getting that Fibromyalgia and/or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome diagnosis is difficult. Saying that you hurt all over for no particular reason, that you just can't seem to get out of bed each morning, that you could sleep for days and still be tired, or that you feel like you are thinking through several layers of cotton just tends to confuse most doctors. Even though there is nothing new about these conditions and there are a growing number of individuals suffering from them, few doctors know much about Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or Myofascial Pain. Diagnosis, even if your doctor believes you, can take months or even years. Then, once diagnosed, there is no set treatment options leaving us with the primary responsibility of finding options that ease our suffering.

Integrative Therapies for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Myofascial Pain is the book that I wish I could have been given when I started this journey. I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks they might have Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or Myofascial Pain. This multifunctional book will educate you while reminding you that you are not alone.

Integrative Therapies for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Myofascial Pain begins by explaining the similarities and differences between the three conditions. Many doctors and most of the literature tend to lump these together because the symptoms are very similar. Nonetheless, the root cause may not necessarily be the same which definitely suggests different treatment strategies.

Next, the book tells us how to talk to our doctor. How to explain our symptoms: their location, the intensity, and the duration. Also, knowing our rights and when to find another doctor. This is important as after repeated testing and specialist visits, we all start to wonder if the pain is in our head. However, it is at this point that we need to stand up for ourselves and find appropriate healthcare specialists.

The final sections are for after the diagnosis. Things like finding support, educating yourself, and figuring out what treatment options might be useful to you. There are also some invaluable tips on living, getting through your day, reworking relationships, and understanding the emotional aspects of these conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars decent book on fibromyaliga
this is a decent book on fibromyalgia.....but I think there are newer ones that are a bit better than this

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for this book!!!
At last an approach to fibromyalgia that doesn't treat you like a victim, thank you! After only one week of following the program I feel a relief from the pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A followup note
I was reading the reviews and thought maybe it was worth mentioning.

I'm the son of the author.Frank did indeed suffer terribly from FM and, in case anyone is wondering, its been 7 years since he wrote this book and I have not heard him complain of the symptoms recurring once in all this time.

I'm sure it won't work for everyone, but it definitely *did* work for him.

1-0 out of 5 stars I think I bought snakeoil
If there's a how to cure book I've read it.So far none of them have worked - including this one.Exercise, eat right, take care of yourself, have a good attitude, meditate.I already do these things, and yes, they do help, but ONLY because those things would help ANYONE.

Do they CURE it?NO.I'm not cured.I have good days, but then BOOM, the pain starts and it is like I'm getting the flu.Nothing will have stressed me out, I won't be 'mad.'

In fact, I'm a pretty happy person with a great life, and a horrid nervous system.I think I bought snakeoil, again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!
I spent 18 months seeing 25 doctors, took pain killers, muscle relaxants, sleep meds, anti-depressant, Xanax and kept getting worse. Was unable to sleep, to sit or walk without extremem pain. Quit my job, lost my fiance, ended up hospitalized for severe depression.

Then I got this book, followed it religiously. Now I'm off all medication, quit seeing all doctors, am pain free, sleeping again and have my life back!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the FM book you need..the rest don't compare
I was diagnosed in 2001 with FM and since purchased various books on how to help me manage it..most were a total waste of money...this one is worth every penny!

Last year after dealing with a doctor that didn't belive in FM and just wanted to ship me off to the psych ward because she didn't want to help me deal with my pain and lack of restorative sleep..which was clear every time I saw her as she always referred to treating my "mood" problem...you try to be cheerful when your in a lot of pain, stressed out, and can't seem to ever feel rested, then add people who think your just there to get drugs.
In trying to change providers I found a small practice where a Nurse Practioner and an RN helped to treat just patients suffering from FM.The first visit(and everyone since then) was very pleasant. They had a copy of this book "Taking Charge of Fibromyalgia" in their waiting room...come to find that co-author Julie Kelly was the RN at this practice, so for the first time in a long time I feel like I have someone that truely understands my condition and can help me unlike 90% of doctors I've seen over the years (most don't belive in the condition and refuse to actually do any reading on it).I still have flare ups but now I have the tools I need to get myself through them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
This book is extremely helpful for anybody living with the pain and frustration of Fibromyalgia.I was fortunate enough to have been able to go through the Fibromyalgia Clinic run by Julie Kelly several years ago.Now I can use this book to learn more about or refresh what I already know about this awful condition that so often debilitates me completely. You would be wise to get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Fantastic book - explains a lot. It was written by two people who have FMS and work in healthcare. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about this condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative BUT Depressing
Taking Charge of Fibromyalgia: Everything You Need to Know to Manage Fibromyalgia, Fifth Edition is a well written book and very informative, although there are places which could be slightly less technical and more for the everyday reader.I found myself checking a few medical terms on the internet to be sure I understood what it was trying to explain.

I particularly enjoyed the information provided concerning supplements and nutrition.I am very interested in working with my health care professional while complementing medical treatments/advice with doing what I can holistically/nutritionally to alleviate symptoms and problems.

I will say the section concerning dealing with your family about your condition borders on the ridiculous and seems to be better advice for patients with either a terminal disease or something degenerative and totally disabling. While fibromyalgia is not curable and it has times when it flares and you feel miserable, it is not completely debilitating and I don't know of anyone who has died from fibro.I know a bunch of people whom the disease has impacted their lives in some manner requiring some adjustment during a flare period but these book sounds like it is helping you prepare you family for constant vegetative state coma care.

Plus if I used some of the recommended things to tell my husband - he would hurt himself laughing. He knows I hurt - some days more than others. He knows I tire more easily during a flare. But I just can't see telling him it is ok to grieve the loss of a healthy me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Read Yet
You can really understand this book! I have 3 other books on this illness. I would have given it 5 stars if I didn't have this "fibro-fog" so may understanding is not at my best. ... Read more

Product Description
As many as fifteen million American women, or 5 percent of the adult female population in the US, suffer from the disabling medical condition known as fibromyalgia. If one takes into account husbands, partners, children, and other close relatives, the proportion of the American population directly or indirectly affected by fibromyalgia could be as high as 10 percent, or thirty million persons.

Nonetheless, the medical community is divided over the reality of this condition. One side argues, sometimes heatedly, that the patients are masquerading --pretending a disability they know they do not have. The other side counters, with equal passion, that fibromyalgia sufferers are abused by a society that fails to give them the support they deserve while painfully suffering from this severely debilitating illness.

Without taking sides, Dr. M. Clement Hall presents six fictional, though factually based, case studies of typical patients from differing socioeconomic backgrounds and describes the varying investigations, diagnoses, and treatments they have undergone. Each of these case studies represents a composite of many years of clinical practice rather than one specific patient. Collectively, they cover the range of experiences fibromyalgia patients are likely to have encountered.

By taking this unique approach, Dr. Hall presents an objective overview of the fibromyalgia situation today in North America. Patients, family members, and physicians will see themselves reflected in the descriptions and will gain a broader understanding of this challenging illness.

I bought this book several years ago while I was in the midst of a terrible bout with jaw pain.During this time, I searched the Internet for help and stumbled across the story of a woman who claimed that following the advice in this book cured her of TMJ disorder.

Based on this story, I bought the book and faithfully followed a series of jaw exercises and relaxation techniques outlined in the book.Within a few weeks of doing these exercises and techniques, my jaw quit hurting.Headaches I'd been getting also went away.

So, this book comes from my highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars ALOT of GREAT INFORMATION!!
I had borrowed this book from the library, but when I saw it on Amazon for a reasonable price, I bought it and returned the one to the library.I wanted to be able to refer to it over and over, as I have been recently diagnosed and have several different books that I am reading and like to compare information in them.I knew this would be a good book before I purchased it, because I really liked it when I got it from the library.Anyone with FM or symptoms suggesting they may have it should buy this book.If you do have FM or something like it, you know sitting at the computer for any length of time can be very painful, whereas if you have the book, you can sit in your comfy chair, bed, or wherever is the most comfortable for you.I HIGHLY recommend this book!Just make sure you have a pen or pencil and paper clips to mark pages and paragraphs you will want to refer back to.It's full of valuable information!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I can't say enough about this book.Since the moment I have received this book for my wife she hasn't put the book down.It is really helping me and her cope with the fact that she has CFS and Fibromyalgia.I would recommend this to everyone who needs help understanding this.[...].

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book in my CFIDS/Fibro "library"
I run a support group for CFIDS and Fibromyalgia and this is the first book I recommend to people. I have read MANY books on the illnesses over the past few years since I was first diagnosed, and I always come back to this one! It's my favorite book in my CFIDS/Fibro "library" I ahve accumulated.I also recommend Mary Shomon's books on thyroid disorders.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated
The book is extremely well written. However, I had a hard time understanding everything because of the medical words being used.

1-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
I don't believe in writing negative reviews unless they're really useful.I ordered this book based on all the good things I'd read about it.As I read it I wondered if these reviewers had read the same book! It's a dense and not terribly readable listing of all the readily researched material on CFS and fibromyalgia.Nothing in it is helpful. ... Product Description
This year, six million Americans--most of them women--will go to their doctors, complaining of an illness they have no name for. The majority will be turned away or treated for depression; the few who persist will go to an average of four doctors before they receive the correct diagnosis: fibromyalgia. In their earlier Making Sense of Fibromyalgia, noted medical writer Janice Wallace and Dr. Daniel Wallace, a leading expert on this disorder, provided a comprehensive guide--for both patients and professionals--to this little known and poorly understood syndrome. Now, in All About Fibromyalgia, the Wallaces provide a thoroughly revised and updated version of that highly successful volume, incorporating a wealth of new information. This edition provides the current understanding of the disease as well as the latest drug treatments--all laid out in clear and accessible language. As in the previous volume, the authors provide a detailed, yet clear explanation of the disease. Fibromyalgia, they explain, is a form of chronic neuromuscular pain, a pain-amplification syndrome brought on by abnormal interactions between hormones, the immune system, neurotransmitters, and the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes the syndrome occurs spontaneously; in most cases, the authors write, it is associated with trauma, stress, such conditions as lupus and hypothyroidism, and over forty microbes, from hepatitis to Epstein-Barr to Lyme disease.Drawing on actual cases to illustrate their points, the authors help break through the isolation that patients often feel when doctors misdiagnose or simply ignore their symptoms. All About Fibromyalgia addresses a desperate need for information on this disease and offers reassurance to patients and their families. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Casual Read
Now that I've finally been diagnosed with fibromyalgia after 15 years of hunting for answers, this is the best book I've found so far. It is fairly technical and not a light read. However, it provides the best understanding of what is happening at the biochemical level of the body. Finally, someone can really explain why fibromyalgia patients suffer from the panoply of symptoms that make up the syndrome. He connects the seemingly disconnected dots of fibromyalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have Fibromyalgia.
I am a retired RN (retired do to thedisease.) I was diagnoses with FM in 2000. Since then I have researched this disease until my fingers can no longer type. This book is easy to read and very informative...and I have read and seen many books on the subject of FM.My Rhuematologist suggested I read it, and I am glad I did because it talks about how the diagnosis was formulated and it's not a new disease, because it's been called many names. It also talks about every kind of treatment used and makes it so I can choose which is best for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is a great book that answers a lot of questions and it cross- references well with other autoimmune diseases. It is certainly one of the best books I have read concerning fibromyalgia. I have this book along with Dr. Wallace's book about lupus and they make wonderful companions. Again, I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
Dr. Wallace is a life saver and one of the most well respected Rhuematology doctors in the country!I was undiagnosed for 3 years and had gone to 10 doctors when I finally went to Dr. WallaceHe actually listened to me, thoroughly tested me and finally diagnosed me.He got me into a comprehensive pain management program and I'm now out of my wheelchair.I've read this book cover to cover and keep it as a reference tool.I can't say enough about it.Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Science
I was fortunate enough to find this book right after I was diagnosed. It explained everything I wanted to know, and more. Each chapter or section begins with a literary quotation that brings the subject into focus. The second section is heavily scientific, and the author even recommends skipping it and reading it later. I found the second section well written, but complex. It requires several readings. Each chapter of the book ends with a "Summing Up" paragraph (especially helpful in the scientific section)that helps you remember what you just read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what is happening inside his/her body. However, it is not the best choice for someone who just wants to feel better without understanding the biology behind this complex syndrome. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Fibromyalgia Patients
This book is an excellent source of information for anyone with Fibromyalgia, caretakers, and family members of someone suffering this mysterious, horrible, life altering syndrome. I highly recommend it as a must read.

3-0 out of 5 stars good information, but too much filler
Dr. Goldenberg is a legitimate authority on fibromyalgia, and this book does a good job of separating fact from fiction, but the vast majority of the content is annoying stories about his patients and research. I think the intent was to provide examples and provide a cathartic outlet for the reader, but really it is just a waste of time.

However, each chapter has a 1-page summary at the end that tells you almost everything you need to know. You can read these summaries only and get 80% of the valuable content.Nonetheless,I recommend the book because it is one of the few trustworthy sources in a sea of misinformation, scams and outright lies.

Fibro is a very poorly understood disease and many seek to take advantage of it's victims with miracle cures, magic diets, 'alternative' treatments, and so-called 'research.'With Goldenberg, you can trust what he says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on Fibromyalgia - Highly Recommended!
This book has become my primer on this still somewhat misunderstood invisible ailment. Dr. Goldenberg, an internationally respected leading expert offers no "magic bullet." There simply isn't one. What he does offer is understanding of the many ways in which fibromyalgia can present in each individual through case overviews gleaned from his vast experience in diagnosing and treating this condition, and what one can do to help oneself. He is candid, realistic and helpful. Each chapter ends with a list of things that are untrue and those that are true, based upon the topic covered in that chapter.
There are many "Aha!" moments in the book where there is an opportunity to recognize in someone else what is familiar to the reader who has fibromyalgia. It would also be helpful to family members and friends who might want/need a better understanding of fibromyalgia.
I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT what I expected
In 1996, fibromyalgia researcher, I. Jon Russell and Jenny A. Fransen put together the Fibromyalgia Help Book.Their book ex-plained--as much as possible--an illness that has no known cause and therefore no known treatment.
Dr. Russell is one of the handfull of researchers who are looking for the answers.Accordingly, his book began by explaining in simple terms what seems to be happening within the fibromyalgia patient's body.
He talked about the antidepressants that seem to lessen the pain of fibromyalgia. And then he went on. He told us about all the interconnecting systems in the body that work differently in a fibromyalgia patient's body.He talked about the exciting neurological, hormonal, enzymatic, cycles that just don't work the same old way in a fibro patient's body.
Russell acknowledged that the tricyclic andidepressants and selective seritonin reuptake inhibitators that are standard first treatments may not relieve all symptoms all of the time.Accordingly, he mentioned some of the other drugs that practicioners have found help with individual symptoms.
Finally, Russell showed us the way new research is bringing us more and more information about fibromyalgia, and suggest treatment and management options for the future.
I expected THIS book, written by a similarly-credentialed doctor who is right in there treating fibromyalgia patients and studying them would pick up where the Russell/Fransen book left off.I expeced a short description of what fibromyalgia is and is not.I expected to see tender-point diagrams.I expected a human touch, since Dr. Goldenberg's wife has fibromyalgia.
Most importantly, I expected to have the continuation of the research information last heard of in 1996 in the Russell/Fransen book. Why is there more Substance P in patients' spinal cords--but not in their brains? Can we neutralize the Substance P and remove pain?
The book I just read would be a good start for a newly diagnosed person with fibromyalgia. It is warm, human, and factual. From the viewpoint of someone who has lived with this disease for 30 years, Dr. Goldenberg's introduction smells of sugar coating and looks like rose-colored glasses.I expected more meat and less froth from one of fibromyalgia's principal researchers.
It has been six years since the Russell book was published. Isn't it time to pick up the thread and explain what has been found since then.Wasn't Dr. Goldenberg the person to write it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good information, I have this illness, great book!
I wrote the book -beyond the dark cloud, road to recovery from chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction.I know how much work it takes to write a book,I do feel that DR. Goldenberg, went beyond just writing this book, he also feels for any one who has this devastating illnes and really wants to help others.By reading this fine book,I did feel I know DR. Goldenberg, because he also puts his heart into it.Thank you DR. Product Description

Debilitating pain and tenderness in muscles, ligaments, and tendons are the typical symptoms of fibromyalgia, and this guide by a medical researcher of the disease dismisses traditional treatment—heat, exercise, and rest—in favor of antiviral medications that often provide immediate relief and eventual complete recovery. Offering new hope for advances in treatment, the discussion covers the difficulty of diagnosing fibromyalgia, the overlaps with chronic fatigue syndrome, the unrelatedness of arthritis, and the possibility that food allergies may trigger attacks. Patient success stories along the way encourage readers while data samples, references, and appendices provide clinical details.

4-0 out of 5 stars I called Dr. Dantini
I am currently working with Dr.Dantini.He has diagnosed me with 2 viruses that are active in my body.I'm going to go to my regular doctor and discuss the antiviral protocol with her.His book makes just as much sense as any other fibro book, and actually more.I'm glad I bought the book and called him.It wasn't that expensive to talk to him.I think I paid about $140.00 total. Over the years, I've spent thousands of dollars trying to feel well.I let you know later if this works for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
I talked to my fibro doctor after reading this book. She told me that they are doing similar studies like the ones referred to in this book at Standford University. There must be something to this.I am trying the treatment and so far so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Fibromyalgia Remedy
I like how Dr Dantini speaks in plain english and establishes that this is a "real" disease.I also liked the food allergy aspect as part of the therapy. We are what we eat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Knock it Till You Try It!A Patient's Comments.
If you have not read The New Fibromyalgia Remedy, or given the protocol a try, then you are not serious about feeling better.I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1983 and although in serious pain had no desire to become a test subject for MD's with no answers. Therefore, I coped. I took no medications. I filled my library with books on the subject. Soon, they all began to sound the same. Everyone had a theory. Then I finally became bedridden with pain and fatique, an unacceptable position for someone doing physical labor running a horse farm. Dr. Dantini's book came out last year and I can't begin to tell you how exciting it was to read of the food/viral connection. His rationale made more sense to me than anything I had read in the past, so I picked up the telephone for a long distance appointment. He's easy to talk to because he has been there himself. My tests came back positive to just about everything. With Dr. Dantini's help and my attention to following directions, guess what? I have my life back!

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Fibromyalgia Remedy
The New Fibromyalgia Remedy presents quite an intriguing concept about the cause of Fibromyalgia. The author is an Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat Specialist who has noticed some interesting trends among his patients with chronic fatigue and pain. His findings are based upon the premise that certain viral infections (in particular, Epstein-Barr Virus, Cytomeglovirus, Herpesvirus 6, and Parvovirus) often cause symptoms similar to those experienced by those individuals diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

It would seem that these very common viral infections have the ability to stay within the human body unnoticed for years. In fact, the majority of the population probably has a number of like entities in their system. According to the author's theory, for those that suffer with Fibromyalgia these infections get triggered and attack the system again and again, with each new flare up.

Treating these viral infections at each onset seems to have some potential. This is especially true when delayed (hidden cumulative) food allergies issues are also addressed. Unfortunately, at this time, the relief is temporary as 90% of patients have repeated relapses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia:Simple Relief through Movement
Excellent book for fibromyalgia sufferers.Since the author is also a fellow fibromyalgic, you are receiving advice from someone who knows in addition to educational information obtained through her profession. The information is provided in common layman's terms and is easy reading. The information is also common sense and assists you with your efforts to manage your fibromyalgia, instead of "it" managing you.I have recommended this book to other fibromyalgics and they loved the book as well.Fibromyalgics need to educate themselves about this condition in order to continue living their lives as normal as possible, so do not rely solely on this book, but it should definitely be included in your fibromyalgia library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Soothing and validating
This book is helpful if you feel guilty about not pushing through pain.It reminds me to be careful. The suggestions for weight lifting are very good.I would buy a used copy because it is not worth the money for the information you get from the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for fibromites and their loved ones
This book offers sound advice on living with fibromyalgia.I am not saying that it is easy because it is NOT!But, the author has a point, you have to do some kind of movement every day.Every single day whether you feel like it or not.We aren't talking running marathons here, but movement is crucial to keeping the fibro body from becoming stiff and more fatigued.Other books such as Starlanyl's books are great for more comprehensive information.Additionally, Merek's book "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Other Invisible Illnesses" was one of the first fibro books I read and I found it very helpful as well. This book, however, I would recommend as a first read, followed by Markek's book and rounded out with Starlanyl's detailed books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediate relief the first day!
Because we are all dynamic, incredibly complex beings, as different from each other as we could possibly be, naturally, with any health issue, from a common cold to schizophrenia, different medications & different therapies work better or worse {or not all} for different people.

With that caveat, and as anyone with FM would tell you, when you've tried everything else, it won't hurt {much more} to try this.

I was one of those who listened to my doctor & jumped right into low-impact aerobics. After a week I would have welcomed death, both his and mine.

I opened this book, as I opened a few dozen other books on FM, with a little hope & a lot of cynicism. I've only gotten as far as the illustrated stretches, which I spent an hour on last night, with these results:
...I slept better & more comfortably last night than in recent memory, without feeling as if I were lying on a bed of rocks;
...I didn't wake up & take inventory of aches & pains that were about to ruin my day;
...I didn't have to spend 10 minutes trying to nerve myself up to get out of bed, with dread at facing another new day with the same old loathing for my body & its lack of cooperation;
...I didn't have to prioritize my entire day based on my pain level, knowing I would feel up to only 1 or 2 small tasks, & trying to decide if I would be able to shower AND still go to my son's school play.

I feel looser in my muscles & joints, clearer in my head, more optimistic about life in general & in my ability to stay this particular course with, well, maybe not grace, but at least without constantly living on the edge of desperation & depression, not living but just putting one foot in front of the other & not looking any further ahead than the next painful step.

Overall - the best investment of time & money I've ever made. It's early days, but I finally feel ready to look forward to the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing I don't know about already.
This book was not helpful at all to me.I basically have a good working knowledge about fibromyalgia and this book offered no new helpful advice; in fact, it seems to be very outdated. The author basically speaks about her own actual experience.I would try another book rather than this one, probably a book written in 2005. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info. here!
This was a gift I purchased and the reciever has used it well, being a good therapy for the mind and body in what can be a daily struggle in living with Fibro.

3-0 out of 5 stars While not the best book, it's certainly a good introduction to new patients
This book is on the old side - there has been a lot of great and amazing research since it was first published. However, it can provide patients that have just been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a good, basic understanding of what they are facing. It should not be considered to be a complete reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars The original "it's all in your head theory"
This book is a slap in the face to anyone with FMS. The author is either completely uneducated about FMS, or has decided that his personal views, misguided, uninformed and biased, are correct and the leading experts are idiots.
PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It will leave you depressed and confused, wondering why you don't feel better after a hot shower (his idea of "pain relief"). This book perpetuates the old stereotypes that FMS is "psychosocial", caused by "stress".
He suggests hypnotherapy and "laugh therapy". His extremely small section on pain control recommends Tylenol or aspirin, and claims narcotics are only for "extreme" cases, and then only for short periods. "The patient who uses narcotics for pain must then expand her activity in exercise and motion to justify the pain remedy". Justify to who?
Please read instead books by actual Physicians, experts, or someone who actually has FMS. This guy has no credentials, has not done any research, has not even interviewed experts in the field. He read a few books, and then proceeded to write his own version of what FMS is and to treat it. This is a 1950's view of the world. He suggests you bring laundry to the living room so "now you can fold the clothes at leisure while you watch a soap".
I could write an entire book on how this book is inaccurate, insulting, and just plain wrong. You be better asking a stranger off the street for advice than reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Won't Find a Better "Relief Handbook"
I have suffered the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia for 7 years. But thanks to The Fibromyalgia Relief Handbook I am free of symptoms. No more muscle pain, no more "hurting all over" no more sleepless nights.I feel like a new person. How did this miracle happen? I simply followed a few simple relief tips covered in the book.Simple tips like adding certain nutrients to my diet and eliminating specific foods. What's more the book is written in plain, simple English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This book is one of the most helpful for those with fibromyalgia.Chet Cunningham is not out to sell you one specific treatment. He gives you information on many many different ideas and suggestions for you to review and try. This is very helpful because no one treatment is going to help every single person.Another great thing about this book is that he writes it in a simple fashion. So, if you suffer from fibro fog you can still understand what he is telling you! Product Description

It has been said that chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia (CFS/FM) are like the old Indian story of the blind men and the elephant. As the men felt various parts of the elephant, they described it as a snake, a brush, a tree, or a wall, depending on which part they had touched. Each thought of the elephant in terms of his own experience, mistaking part of the elephant for all of it. Likewise, everybody working with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia has a piece of the puzzle, but much work remains to be done before a complete picture emerges.

Hope and Help for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia is designed to educate patients suffering from CFS/FM about their illnesses and to teach them coping skills that will improve their quality of life. And while the good news is that people who suffer from CFS/FM aren't dying, they bad news is that it's going to take a lot of time and effort to get better since there is no one specific treatment that works for everyone.

Some of the issues covered are:

  • Understanding the symptoms and how diagnoses are made
  • Causes of CFS/FM and common psychological consequences, including anxiety and depression
  • The role of stress and how to manage it
  • The connection between the mind and the body in coping with CFS/FM
  • The potential of medications, nutrition, and lifestyle changes
  • The role of complementary medications and dietary supplements in pain management
  • The value and limitations of alternative or complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage, homeopathy, and aromatherapy
  • Legal issues about how to deal with medical and legal problems that may arise if insurance benefits have been stopped

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful overall discussion of the illness and healing ideas!
Hope and Help for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia (Second Edition) (Hope & Help for)

I've had this illness for 20 years and have, during this time, read any new information that comes out. I'm currently beginning to see a doctor in Dr Nancy Klimas' clinic at the University of Miami Medical Center and she recommended this book. It was easy to read but packed with information. Even though I knew much of it, having it all together in one place was extremely helpful, all the way down to charts for making sure you build in your rest periods to treatment options to supplements that help to research to alternative therapies. I would recommend this to anyone with CFS or Fibromyalgia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
Good overview of available treatment options for FMS and CFS. Since they often strike together, it's nice to have information on both in one book. Buyer should remember that not all treatment modalities work for everyone. If read and shared with an open mind this book can be a good way to encourage those who haven't found the right treatment/medication regimen yet to press on until they do.

2-0 out of 5 stars 'CFS' is never fatal, but poeple do die with this diagnosis
Many patients are told 'CFS' is never fatal, and it is why we push ourselves so hard and end up so so ill. (It is a big part of why I am now housebound and bedbound, and ridiculously ill.) Some of us even die.

Of course 'CFS' isn't fatal, but M.E. is and many with M.E. are told incorrectly that what they have is 'CFS.'

'CFS' however isn't just a misdiagnosis for M.E. patients, it's a misdiagnosis for everyone, always.

Illnesses most often misdiagnosed as 'CFS' include Lyme disease, vitamin deficiencies, cancer, MS, Bechet's disease, thyroid and adrenal illnesses, FM and so on.

Many of the illnesses misdiagnosed as 'CFS' are testable and treatable...but only once patients and their doctors ditch the useless 'CFS' misdiagnosis. Many illneses can also be very serious or fatal if not correctly diagnosed and treated, and this includes Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. (M.E. is NOT the same thing as 'CFS'!)

Please, if you have a 'CFS' (mis)diagnosis, do everything you can to find your correct diagnosis, do not accept 'CFS' ever as an end point to the process of diagnosis.

Some of the diseases misdiagnosed as 'CFS' ARE fatal despite what this book claims. All patients given this misdiagnosis need a corect diagnosis and treatment finally. The needless deaths need to stop!

Product Description
The title of this book makes a bold statement. It promises a cure. Is this really possible? Yes, there is a cure to arthritis. You can eliminate arthritis and fibromyalgia pain permanently. The book reveals the true cause of arthritis and fibromyalgia. Up till now these conditions have been considered incurable. Drugs aren't the answer. However, there are natural health-promoting therapies that do work and can stop the progression of the disease and encourage regeneration and recovery. In this book you will read about new ground-breaking medical research, fascinating case studies, and inspiring personal success stories. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely highly recommended
This book asserts that there is such a thing as a drug-free cure for arthritis and fibromyalgia. This is not just pain reduction, but elimination.

According to the author (and new medical research), the cause of arthritis is due to infection, either viral or bacterial. The first place to look for a cause, especially if you have had a root canal. It is very hard to clean all of the bacteria out of a diseased tooth, so if the root canal was done improperly, it is very possible that some of that bad bacteria will enter your bloodstream through a cut or scrape in your mouth. The bacteria will travel to someplace "safe," where there is little blood nearby, like a bone joint. That is why the usual drugs have little, or no, effect, as the bacteria eats away at your cartilage.

So what is the answer? Coconut oil. Teeth are very porous, full of tiny tubules, where the bacteria can hide. Brushing and flossing won't clean out those tubules, but coconut oil will. The book goes into detail about why coconut oil is so healthy. Take a teaspoon or two, and swish it around your mouth for several minutes. Don't gargle, and don't swallow (spit it out when you are done). You don't want to draw all those toxins out of your mouth, and deposit them in your stomach. Coconut oil can be also used in cooking, and taken internally as a dietary supplement. Do it everyday, and, after a couple of weeks, even the most extreme cases will show improvement.

Is that the whole story? No. After cleaning out your system, change your diet by a lot. Everybody says that, but consider this: After going to all that trouble, and eating all that coconut oil, to clean the arthritis infection out of your body, do you really want to let it back in with an unhealthy diet? Think about taking a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin to rebuild those damaged joints. Exercise will help limber up your joints, so get moving. If the pain has limited your mobility, start with something you can do (even simply standing and bouncing on one of those mini-trampolines). If you are overweight, lose some of it. Every pound lost decreases the stress on your joints.

You're thinking: Not Another Miracle Cure, right? If the best the medical profession can do is to hand you a bottle of painkillers and tell you to live with the pain, or schedule you for a joint replacement operation, what have you got to lose? This method is easy and drug-free. This book is full of success stories, and is extremely highly recommended.

Another brilliant book by Dr. Fife.He has researched all the possible causes for Arthritis and Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue and come up with some real treatments. If you suffer from any of these ailments, read this book.I have been "Oil Pulling" ever since I read his chapter on it.I'm a lot less achy in just a month.I also bought a mini trampoline on his advice.I own most of his books and am a big fan.

"A diagnosis of arthritis is not a life sentence."Dr. B. Fife

Treatment for Arthritis and Fibromyalgia currently consists of managing the symptoms, as the causes have yet to be fully understood. In this enlightening guide the author, Dr. Bruce Fife projects his theory, that both conditions are related to an underlying infection. His research has led him through a maze of possible viruses, fungi and bacteria, and he expresses his belief that the culprit lies within infected teeth and gums.Did you know that a tooth and socket comprise a joint? From the teeth, bacteria easily enter the blood stream, causing secondary infections in the joints.
One's mind might leap to the conclusion, if it's an infection then give me antibiotics.Just like life, it's not that simple. If the secondary joint infection is caused by virus or fungi; antibiotics are useless.
Well- researched facts are presented to us in the beginning of the book, leading up to
Dr. Fife's `Arthritis Battle Plan.'He warns us that some drugs i.e. non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce inflammation but may have the high price of accelerated bone destruction.
Dr. Fife spends some time explaining the potential benefits of bee venom but fascinates the reader by presenting the extraordinary healing power of coconut oil.It seems the oil is comparable to natures own, mother's milk. Both have properties, when broken down by the body, become antimicrobial.Unlike synthetic antibiotics, this more natural agent is not harmful to our body's `good bacteria.'In effect, coconut oil reduces systemic infection, thereby reducing infection in the joints.
The importance of proper diet is not ignored, and he stresses his opinion of the impact on health by refined sugar and grains. The Magic of Motion chapter addresses the need for weight bearing, yet low, impact exercise.Teaching us that although rest is important, inactivity will, in effect, `rust' our joints.Lightening the amount of weight we put upon our joints is essential.
The book is completed with a summary of his Seven Steps to Beating Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. This is a drug free lifestyle, which he claims will not only eliminate pain but rebuild joint function, restoring mobility.Be adventurous and attempt his Seven-Day Whole Foods Challenge. The book leaves little doubt to its validity including index, numerous references, diagrams and endorsement from several satisfied followers.Dr. Fife has shared his knowledge in many other books promoting healthier choices, if nothing else a sense of hope.
Finishing my own further investigation, I intend to put coconut oil on my grocery list, adding it to my own attempt at relief, by living a healthier lifestyle.Watch out pharmaceutical companies, perhaps nature has provided the real cure.Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book was extremely helpful for me due to the fact that I have a lot of fibro fog and very low energy. The day to day lists in this book help me stay focused and on track with the things that help me feel better. The title is misleading, but I had read the description of the book provided by amazon.com, therefore, I was aware of what the book was really about before I bought it.The book is very simple, which is a help for those with fibro because it is easy to get overwhelmed and confused. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take an aggressive stance on their health, but needs some guidance and a format to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
This book must have been so easy to write - virtually the same set of words on each and every page. Why not simply say try to cut down on caffeine, carbonated drinks, alcohol, chocolate, cigarettes and refined sugars? I had already cut out the above, so the book was no good for me at all. I was looking for recipes and advice regarding the foods I need to eat to help reduce my symptoms - but the book contains not a word about healing foods! The book will be useful to stumulants addicts only. Very amateurishly-written, too, I might add.

3-0 out of 5 stars Title Misnomer
Upon first skimming through this book I was surprised and angry that it was not a "cook book" as the title suggests. After thinking about it and checking the contents out, I realized that the book is going to be a help in gaining control of the symptoms of the syndrome.I think that the author could have selected a more appropriate title for the book to better guide the buyer to information that is exactly what they are looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The journey of many miles stars with the first step".
This is a small book, but it holds a big message.. self-empowerment. Found that by following day by day I began to feelthat yes, I could get a handle on things and yes I didn't have to be a passive "partner in my own "healing". It is a good place to start, if you've gotten all the clinical info, but need to know what to do next.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Cookbook in Fibromyalgia
The titile of this book is a misnomer. A cookbook entails a list of recipes. There is not one recipe or even a selection of certain types foods available to help fight fibromyalgia. It was completely useless to me as itonly included what most of us already know about fibromyalgia diet, such asavoiding caffeine. The lists and diary type incluseion for each day couldbe done on a simple lined tablet. Ifg the book had been entitledFibromyalgia Diet it might have helped mitigate my dissapointment in it,but Fibromyalgia Cookbook it is not. ... Read more
