Chapters: List of Olympic Medalists in Short Track Speed Skating. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 51. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Short track speed skating is a sport that is contested at the Winter Olympic Games. The first Winter Olympics, held in 1924, included speed skating, but the first official short track speed skating events were not held until the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Before 1992, short track speed skating events were held at the 1988 Winter Olympics as a demonstration sport. At those games, events for both men and women were held in five disciplines: 500 metre, 1000 metre, 1500 metre, 3000 metre and the relay (3000 metres for women, 5000 metres for men). The results of those events are not considered official and are not included in this list. At the 1992 Winter Olympics, there were four medal events: men's 1000 metres, men's 5000 metre relay, women's 500 metres and women's 3000 metre relay. Men's 500 metres and women's 1000 metres was added in 1994. The men's and women's 1500 metres were added in 2002 and all eight events have been held at every Olympic Games since. American Apolo Anton Ohno has won eight medals (two gold, two silver, four bronze), the most of any speed skater. Wang Meng of China , has won four gold medals, a silver and a bronze, more than any other female short track speed skater. South Korean Chun Lee-Kyung has also won four gold medals. Cathy Turner is the oldest athlete to medal; she was 31 in 1994 when she won a bronze medal in the 3000 metre. Kim Yoon-Mi is the youngest; she was 13 when she won a gold in the same event. At the 1992 Winter Olympics, South Korean Kim Ki-hoon became the first short track speed skater to win two gold medals; in 1994 he and American Cathy Turner became the first to successfully defend thei...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6148421 ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Tuba Karademir (born on March 17, 1985 in Ankara, Turkey), is a Turkish figure skater. She was the flag-bearer for Turkey at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where she placed 21st. As of April 2010, she was ranked 44th in the world by the International Skating Union (ISU). Karademir started skating at the age of 5, with her kindergarten class, right after the first ice rink opened in Turkey in 1990. At eight years old she competed for the first time internationally for Turkey. In 1995, she won a gold medal at a novice competition at the Balkan Games and a silver medal in the Netherlands. Turkey had only one ice rink then, and no professional skating coaches. In 1996 her parents decided to move the family to Canada, where she could train seriously. She began training with Robert Tebby at the Mariposa School of Skating. At the 2006 European Figure Skating Championships, Karademir placed 13th. She then went on to become the first figure skater from Turkey to compete in the Olympic Winter games. She was the flag bearer for Turkey during the opening ceremony. She scored a personal best of 44.2 points in the short program. Combined with her 79.44 points in the free program, she placed 21st overall with a total of 123.64 points. At the 2006 World Figure Skating Championships, Karademir placed 18th with her highest finish to date at that event. In the long program, she finished 16th, giving her the 18th overall finish. At the 2007 European Figure Skating Championships she achieved a new personal best in her short program and placed 10 overall. In June 2006, Tuba Karademir was transferred by the Kocaeli Katspor. Excerpt: Oleg Georgievich Goncharenko (Russian: ) (18 August 1931 16 December 1986), Distinguished Master of Sports of the USSR, was the first male Soviet speed skater to become World Allround Champion. Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, Oleg Goncharenko made his international debut in 1953 and promptly became World Allround Champion. He would win two more World Allround Championships after that, as well as two European Allround Championships. In 1958, he actually managed to win the "triple", becoming World, European, and Soviet Allround Champion. At the 1956 Winter Olympics of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Goncharenko won bronze on the 5,000 m and on the 10,000 m. He also participated in the 5,000 m at the 1960 Winter Olympics of Squaw Valley, but finished only sixth. Both at home at abroad, Goncharenko was unusually popular for many years, even long after he had retired from speed skating. After winning his first World Championship in 1953 in Helsinki, he received dozens of telegrams in his hotel room there from all over the Soviet Union and from abroad. One of those telegrams he kept until the end of his life because it was particularly dear to him. It was a short message from the legendary Norwegian speed skater Oscar Mathisen, reading "Congratulations. Oscar Mathisen." written just one year before Mathisen's death. Goncharenko's achievements also prompted two cities, Denver and Oslo, to name him an honorary citizen. He also was awarded the Order of Lenin. Goncharenko retired from speed skating in 1962. He died in 1986, at the age of 55, after a painful illness. An overview of medals won by Goncharenko at important championships he...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12939416 ... Read more

Excerpt: Mihaela Dasclu (born February 12, 1970) is a retired Romanian speed skater, and the most successful speed skater from that country. Dasclu was born in the city of Braov, and first trained as a figure skater before changing to speed skating. She debuted at the 1987 World Junior Championships, where she finished seventh. The following year she finished ninth, but was later disqualified along with her team mate Cerasela Hordobetiu, making it impossible for her to make the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary. She returned to the international scene in 1991, and finished sixth in the 1000 meter during the 1992 Winter Olympics, the best Romanian Olympic speed skating finish of all time. In the 1994 World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Butte, Montana she won a bronze medal. In the 1994 Winter Olympics she finished eighth in two events, the 1500 meter and the 3000 meter. She continued to compete through the 1990s, with numerous top ten finishes, such as a seventh place finish in the Women's European Championships in 1996, and sixth the following year in the same competition. She finished third in 3000 meter at the 6th World Cup 1995-1996 and the World Cup Final 1995-1996, with her also finishing third in the latter in the 1500 meter. She had second place finishes in the 3000 meter during the 9th World Cup 1995-1996 and the World Cup Final 1996-1997. At the 4th World Cup 1996-1997 she finished third in the 5000 meter, followed by a first place finish the following year in that same event during the 7th World Cup 1996-1997. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is excellent for all Nancy Kerrigan fans
This is an excellent Nancy Kerrigan biography for the Nancy Kerrigan fan. It's worth reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get Nancy's own book instead :-)
Basically, this book won't tell you anything the media hasn't beaten to death over the past 4 years. It may have been informative when it was first published, but most people- and especially skating fans- will learn nothing new from this book.

I'd definitely recommend Nancy's own book over "Edge of Glory," which ends prior to the 1994 Olympics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast-to-Press, expanded magazine story before '94 Games.
Recall one of the first, FASTEST paperbacks to hit shelves? It was of the never expected 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey victory over the Soviet team at Lake Placid. That book was on shelves a few DAYS after the victory.Anyway, the same here with the Coffey/Bondy book: it's after the Harding attack in Detroit, but hits the book shelves before they even get to Lillehammer.Taken for it's worth, it's a good, fast paperback of an abridged bio. of Ms. Kerrigan. Her early training, family relationships, and, yup, even covers the baton attack. If your flight is over 1-1/2 hours, you'll finish before you land. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and beautifully written
This is a very inspiring and beautifully written book. It discusses all of the obstacles that Nancy Kerrigan overcame before she gave the performances of her life at the 1994 Winter Olympics. This book and Nancy Kerrigan helped me to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. It taught me many important lessons about life. I know it may sound weird that I learned this from a sport such as figure skating, but there are many parallels between figure skating and life. In sports as well as in life, hard work and overcoming obstacles is more important than winning gold medals. As a result of winning a silver medal, Nancy taught me two important things among others: overcoming hardships is more important, significant, and much bigger than winning gold medals. By giving her the silver medal, the judges made her star shine much brighter than a gold medal. In fact, she would have made this a realization whether she had won a medal or not. What is more important is trying your best. And the second lesson is that life is sometimes unfair. She won that night in Lillehammer. To me, she is the Olympic champion(in spirit and in reality) no matter what the judges said. And she deserved the gold medal. She was robbed and so was the United States. But what really matters is what I have said above. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to have their life changed for the better. Not many books can do that.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good true story
Very moving and inspiring. I couldn't put it down. It inspired me to dream and work really hard to reach it.Nancy has amazing parents that support her in everything she did. I really respect them. The way Nancy faced everyproblem is amazing. You have to read this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair and unbiased account of this talented athlete
Unlike other purported "bios" of Tonya and Nancy, these writers obviously took the time to interview those close to the skaters rather than depending on news stories for their material. Their attention to detail and the interesting details of backstage life in the fast-paced world of international figure skating make this an interesting read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Quick Read about the Tonya/Nancy Debacle
This book was hastily churned out at the height of the Tonya/Nancy knee-whacking incident as a quick money maker for the author and publisher. The problem with this book is that it is not a well-rounded biography of Tonya; the emphasis is too much on the knee-whacking incident and shortly thereafter, stopping just before the '94 Winter Games. It is an interesting collectible for Tonya-philes, but does not give a full portrait of the talented, complex, troubled young woman. Hopefully a more comprehensive biography of Ms. Harding will be available in the future. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The only thing I learned is how conceited she is
Large print, pictures, small vocabulary, Even though it's written by a 14 year old, but still should be much better than this. This book has showed me what's the real Tara Lipinski behind the fame.

Here're some quotes directly from the book:

"The audience applauded as I finished my program.
I felt like applauding too! After my terrible short program the year before at the Worlds, I ended up taking first.
Michelle also skated well. But she stumbledd comping out of the triple lutz in her combination. She came in fourth.
Irina Slutskaya was sixth."
What's the point of telling how the Michelle messed up? and Irina?

"No, it seemed as if the crowd was reacting to Michelle's scores, which had just come up. I looked at them too. They weren't great, and I was a little confused. (Later I found out that Michelle had fallen three times during her program. She'd had a bad day.)"
Ok maybe you want to tell us how Michelle didn't skated well, maybe how she fell... but we don't need to know how many times she fell! And adding "She'd had a bad day." at the end? We know you just want to say she sucks.

Tara keeps telling who came in after her at the competitions she won. I've never been a big fan of Tara Lipinski, and after reading this book, I will never be.

5-0 out of 5 stars TaraLipinski Triumph on Ice.
Tara Lipinski's autobiography is about her life and how she became a star. She was born on June 1o,1982. She became a champion when she started taking roller blading lessons. Then a friend came to talk to her mom, about trying ice skating. When Tara tried ice skating, she loved it. But then her dad got a new job in Texas, so they had to move. But her mom and Tara moved back to Delaware. Soon Tara got a new ice-skating coach, Richard Callaghan. Her mom and Tara had to move again to Michigan. In 1996 Nicole Bobek, an ice skater, drop out of the USA Figure Championships because of an injury. Tara won 3rd at the championship. Soon after Tara became the first skater to land the triple loop- triple loop combination. In 1997 at the age of 14, she became the youngest figure to win the World Championships.

Tara Lipinski taght me that if you do not give up on your dreams, they will come true.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mind Gym
This a well written, concise look into a gammut of psychological skills related to sport performance. It is also a series of short stories from the author's career as a professional sport psychologist. It is an easy read and well done. What it is NOT is an introduction to sport psychology or a book that can help someone learn sport psychology unless they are already familiar with the topic. Good book, I liked it very much; but not a book from which one can learn sport psychology. It is a collection of stories and within each story there is a skill to be learned.

1-0 out of 5 stars No depth at all
The author starts by stating how important psychology for sports is. It is.
After this promising start, however, we are presented with chapter after chapter of - well, nothing.
He states something obvious like "belive in yourself" and underlines this with some quotes and success stories from profs.
Great. This does not help at all. I already knew that I need confidence to excel.
No "how to", no in depth tipps, nothing usefull at all :-(

5-0 out of 5 stars A life changing book
I credit this book for changing the direction of my life.I found it to be a powerful tool in changing the way I view the world.I have given out 15 copies to friends, associates and players. If you really take the information in this book to heart it can help you accomplish great things in your life. The lessons learned in this book apply not only to sports but also to life in general. This book really teaches you the power of your own mind and will.I strongly suggest this book to anyone not just athletes.

5-0 out of 5 stars For my preteen, teenager and me
"Stinkin' thinkin'." You know just what I'm talking about. For me, it would mean walking onto the tennis court thinking I didn't have a shot to win. Or my sons walking to the pitchers mound thinking "this guy's going to jack me." But for those of you who have quit believing, I have a solution - read a book.

I ordered a couple of books on mental toughness, not for myself because I am, but for the boys to read. One of them is Mind Gym: An Athlete's Guide to Inner Excellence. I had them both read the first four chapters last night, and I won't soon forget their response: "It's the best book I've ever read" - hearty words from a 12 and 13-year old. Sometimes as parents we don't know the right words to impart to our kids, or maybe because we're parents we're just heard less...So I don't know that these books will solve their woes of late on the field, but I do know that they're paying attention to the fact that sports are not just physical tests because until the head is right, the body never will be.
