Editorial Review

Product Description
This up-to-date account of the violent assertion of ethnic Fijian identity reveals the multi-ethnic island as a microcosm of issues confronting many other countries in the modern world. The authors provide a thoughtful investigation into how elite ethnic Fijians responded to their own class insecurity by transposing their racist ideology into the international language of indigenous rights. They reveal how inter-communal conflict often has its origins in the economic and political interests of only a narrow class. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Using the techniques of the historian, the anthropologist, and the political theorist, Lawson discusses the contemporary political situation in Fiji from both a historical and theoretical viewpoint. Drawing on archival material and fieldwork, she traces the sources of the current divisions in Fiji to the well-intentioned, but ultimately misguided, ambitions of colonial administrators to protect the way of life of indigenous Fijians. The author comes to the provocative conclusion that Fiji has never really been a democracy in the Western sense of the word. ... Read more

Product Description
Hawai'i and Fiji share strikingly similar histories of colonialism and plantation sugar production but display different legacies of ethnic conflict today. Pacific Island chiefdoms colonized by the United States and England respectively, the islands' indigenous populations were forced to share resources with a small colonizing elite and growing numbers of workers imported from South Asia. Both societies had long traditions of chiefly power exercised through reciprocity and descent; both were integrated into the plantation complex in the nineteenth century. Colonial authorities, however, constructed vastly different legal relationships with the indigenous peoples in each setting, and policy toward imported workers also differed in arrangements around land tenure and political participation. The legacies of these colonial arrangements are at the roots of the current crisis in both places. Focusing on the intimate relationship between law, culture, and the production of social knowledge, these essays re-center law in social theory. The authors analyze the transition from chiefdom to capitalism, colonizers' racial and governmental ideologies, land and labor policies, and contemporary efforts to recuperate indigenous culture and assert or maintain indigenous sovereignty. Speaking to Fijian and Hawaiian circumstances, this volume illuminates the role of legal and archival practice in constructing ethnic and political identities and producing colonial and anthropological knowledge. ... Product Description
This study analyzes the ways in which political elites use the idea of "tradition" to legitimize certain practices and institutions. Within this framework, case studies focus on constitutional development and the chiefly power in Fiji, the monarchy and the Pro-Democracy Movement in Tonga, and the political issues surrounding the move to universal suffrage in Western Samoa. The book provides a critical approach to the political implications of romanticizing non-Western cultural traditions, especially in terms of democratic development. ... Read more

In 1874, he voluntarily ceded sovereignty of the islands to Britain, which made Fiji a Crown colony within the British Empire. After nearly a century of British rule, Fiji became a Commonwealth realm, an independent sovereign state within the Commonwealth of Nations with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State. After a military coup in 1987, Fiji became a republic, and the role of the monarchy in government was ended. Nevertheless, the Great Council of Chiefs, still recognises Elizabeth II as Tui Viti or the traditional Queen of Fiji, but the position is not one of a constitutional, or otherwise legal ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3747809 ... Product Description

In 1983 Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities revolutionized the anthropology of nationalism. Anderson argued that "print capitalism" fostered nations as imagined communities in a modular form that became the culture of modernity.

Now, in Represented Communities, John D. Kelly and Martha Kaplan offer an extensive and devastating critique of Anderson's depictions of colonial history, his comparative method, and his political anthropology. The authors build a forceful argument around events in Fiji from World War II to the 2000 coups, showing how focus on "imagined communities" underestimates colonial history and obscures the struggle over legal rights and political representation in postcolonial nation-states. They show that the "self-determining" nation-state actually emerged with the postwar construction of the United Nations, fundamentally changing the politics of representation.

Sophisticated and impassioned, this book will further anthropology's contribution to the understanding of contemporary nationalisms.

The historical and social background of the British colonies in the South Pacific has been sketched in as a prelude to this book's main theme: the setting up of Western forms of government and their working in a non-Western society. The experience of Britain in these particular colonies is related in the final chapter to some general aspects of colonial government. ... Read more
