Excerpt: Video fingerprinting is a technique in which software identifies, extracts and then compresses characteristic components of a video, enabling that video to be uniquely identified by its resultant fingerprint. Video fingerprinting is a new and emerging technology that has proven itself to be significantly more effective at identifying and comparing digital video data than its predecessor, hash value comparisons. Video fingerprinting analysis may be based on any number of visual video features including, but not limited to, key frame analysis, color and motion changes during a video sequence. Normally, digital data are compared based on hash values that are directly derived from the digital components of a file. However, such methods are incomplete as they can only determine absolute equality or non-equality of video data files or parts. More often than not, differences in a video codec and digital processing artifacts may cause small differences in the digital components without changing the video perceptually. Thus, when employing hash methods, a comparison for absolute equality may fail even when two video segments are perceptually identical. Moreover, hash value comparisons are also of little value when one wishes to identify video segments that are similar (but not identical) to a given reference clip. The limitations of the equality / inequality dichotomy inherent to hash value techniques render similar searching impossible. Also, digital video fingerprinting enables to recognise video excerpts (either shorter videos, or mashups for instance) and videos with a different resolution compared with the original (smaller or larger) as well as recognise videos that have been modified slightly (blurring, rotation, acceleration or decceleration... Product Description
Increasing amounts and various formats of multimedia data require technologies to automatically identify its content. Cryptographic hash functions can not be used for multimedia content identification or verification as they are sensitive to common video processing operations e.g. compression, colour adjustment etc. In this case, fingerprinting, also called perceptual hash functions, that consider perceptual similarity are applicable. Fingerprinting converts large data to a short digest, which is used to identify original data. This book describes some of the different existing approaches for video data. One reference implementation based on Philips' algorithm is investigated. The fingerprints are extracted from the spatio- temporal differencing of mean luminance. It is shown how this method can be improved by using a simple similarity measure. The performance of the algorithms are analysed. The algorithm using similarity shows increased reliability of video identification both in robustness and discriminating capabilities. ... Read more

Excerpt: Brain Fingerprinting is a controversial forensic science technique that uses brain-reading techniques to determine whether specific information is stored in a subject's brain. It does this by measuring electrical brainwave responses to words, phrases, or pictures that are presented on a computer screen (Farwell & Smith 2001). Brain fingerprinting was invented by Lawrence Farwell. The theory is that the brain processes known, relevant information differently from the way it processes unknown or irrelevant information (Farwell & Donchin 1991). The brain's processing of known information, such as the details of a crime stored in the brain, is revealed by a specific pattern in the EEG (electroencephalograph) (Farwell & Smith 2001, Farwell 1994). Farwell's brain fingerprinting originally used the well known P300 brain response to detect the brain's recognition of the known information (Farwell & Donchin 1986, 1991; Farwell 1995a). Later Farwell discovered the MERMER ("Memory and Encoding Related Multifaceted Electroencephalographic Response"), which includes the P300 and addition...http://booksllc.net/?id=930436 ... Description:
The combination of ^1H NMR fingerprinting with multivariate analysis provides an original approach to study the profile of olive oil in relation to its geographical origin and processing. The present work aims at illustrating the relevance of ^1H NMR fingerprints for assessing the geographical origin and the year of production for olive oils from various Mediterranean areas. Multivariate (chemometric) techniques are able to filter out the most relevant information from a spectrum, e.g. for a classification. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out on the ~12,000 variables (chemical shifts) and four data sets were defined prior to PCA. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of the first 50 PC's was applied for classification of olive oil samples (97 or 91) according to the geographic origin and year of production. The data analysis has been carried out with and without outliers, as well. Variable selection for LDA was achieved using: (i) the best five variables and (ii) an interactive forward stepwise manner. Using LDA on the external validation sets the correct classification varied between 47 and 75% (random selection), and between 35 and 92% (Kennard-Stone selection (KS)) depending on geographic origin (country) and production years. A similar success rate could be achieved using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS DA). The success rate can be considerably improved by using probabilistic neural networks (PNN). Correct classification by PNN varied between 58 and 100% on the external validation sets. Other chemometric techniques, such as multiple linear regression, or generalized pair-wise correlation, did not give better results. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! TCP/IP stack fingerprinting is the passive collection of configuration attributes from a remote device during standard layer 4 network communications. The combination of parameters may then be used to infer the remote machine's operating system (aka, OS fingerprinting), or incorporated into a device fingerprint.Certain parameters within the TCP protocol definition are left up to the implementation.Different operating systems, and different versions of the same operating system, set different defaults for these values.By collecting and examining these values, one may differentiate among various operating systems, and implementations of TCP/IP. ... Description:
Genomics-based technologies in systems biology have gained a lot of popularity in recent years. These technologies generate large amounts of data. To obtain information from this data, multivariate data analysis methods are required. Many of the datasets generated in genomics are multilevel datasets, in which the variation occurs on different levels simultaneously (e.g. variation between organisms and variation in time). We introduce multilevel component analysis (MCA) into the field of metabolic fingerprinting to separate these different types of variation. This is in contrast to the commonly used principal component analysis (PCA) that is not capable of doing this: in a PCA model the different types of variation in a multilevel dataset are confounded. MCA generates different submodels for different types of variation. These submodels are lower-dimensional component models in which the variation is approximated. These models are easier to interpret than the original data. Multilevel simultaneous component analysis (MSCA) is a method within the class of MCA models with increased interpretability, due to the fact that the time-resolved variation of all individuals is expressed in the same subspace. MSCA is applied on a time-resolved metabolomics dataset. This dataset contains ^1H NMR spectra of urine collected from 10 monkeys at 29 time-points during 2 months. The MSCA model contains a submodel describing the biorhythms in the urine composition and a submodel describing the variation between the animals. Using MSCA the largest biorhythms in the urine composition and the largest variation between the animals are identified. Comparison of the MSCA model to a PCA model of this data shows that the MSCA model is better interpretable: the MSCA model gives a better view on the different types of variation in the data since they are not confounded. ...
