Product Description
Global warming and climate change are growing environmental concerns. The potential impact on freshwater and marine fish is immense, because most fish have no physiological ability to regulate their body temperature. This volume focuses on the effects of temperature at all levels of organization in fish, with particular emphasis on physiological function: cells, epithelia, organ systems, the whole organism, reproduction, behavior, pollutant interactions, ecology and population dynamics. Written by experts in the field, many chapters also speculate on the long-term physiological and ecological implications to fish of a 2-4oC global warming scenario over the next half century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Quick shipping!I bought the book used and it was great. Thanks! I would buy from here again!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
I now have this book in English and in Spanish. This is a great book for identifying freshwater fish. The pictures are amazing. I really love this book. I am a newspaper reporter...when meetings I cover get boring this book provides hours of entertainment for me. I love both of them.
The book in Spanish allows me to brush up on my Spanish. I am so happy that I have them. They are my favorite books of all time. Dr. Axelrod's knowledge of fish is tremendous. I highly recommend Dr. Axelrod's Mini-Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes to everyone who has at least one aquarium and loves fish.
I was able to identify my Synodontis Petricola catfish because of this book. Pet store employees often don't have the knowledge they need to sell fish. Now that I have this book I can identify fish in a pet store before I buy them. I also learnedhow to make my live plants thrive. My 75 gallon aquarium is beautiful...this book will help me keep it that way.

Sincerly,

Kim Lawrence in Pittsburgh Pa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Axelrod's Mini-Atlas a real find!
This is an amazing catalogue and description of fresh water aquarium fish. I have kept fish--salt water and fresh water--for over 40 years and still found new informative and interesting information in Axelrod's Atlas. It would have been one step better if the sexes of the fish were better identified in the pictures but thats getting pretty picky and all in all the book is a bargain in price and information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tropicle Fish
I find this atlas very fine for getting to realy know about your fish tank.

4-0 out of 5 stars A usefull tool in the aquarist library
The bulk book is just hundreds of photographs of fish fallowed by basic information about the fish therein. It is organized by fish family as many things are in the aquarium hobby. The book has three Indexes, fish alphabetized by scientific name, fish alphabetized by common name, and an index for the text portion of the book, and I think that is brilliant. The photos are a tiny bit grainy however the photos are taken in such a way that the fish in the picture are very detailed, and you could easily use this book to identify an unknown fish. There is information about many common plants, the book also has short basic sections about health, breeding, maintenance, equipment, the stuff that is in most fish books, etc. My one major complaint is I wish there was more information about each individual fish such as sexual dimorphism, water chemistry, and breeding, also the common names are not with the photos only the scientific names are so they must be cross-referenced in the index. I think many people have given this book a bad review simply because it comes so highly recommended that people expect it to be allot more than it is. its no holy grail of the fish books, far from it, but I think for what it is it does good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the cookbooks I use the most
I own a few hundred cookbooks with a dozen or so being favorites and this is one of my favorites and for a variety of reasons.First because it is so complete and covers frying, poaching and steaming (a favorite),simmering and stewing, oven cooking, grilling, campfire (another favorite), smoke cooking and pickling. This makes it a well rounded fish cookbook.

The photos are excellent and the information on cooking utensils needed is precise and clear cut.Spices and other ingredients are covered so well as are step by step directions.

On page 6 there is a well laid out substitution chart that makes the book worth the price, and here are a few examples.A recipe calls for Whitefish, The chart notes that if Cisco is called for that Tullibee, herring o lake herring can be substituted.Page 7 shows detailed photos and text for preparing fish for cooking.Did you know that by sprinkling salt on the counter and laying the fish on the salt that this helps prevent the fish from slipping when filleting or deboning? Simply rinse fish with water when done. Or on page 11 that draining fried fish on cookie cooling racks placed over paper towels allows for more oil to drain and prevents the fried fish from becoming soggy?

Or on page 71 that pouring 1/4 to 1/2 inch of liquid like fish stock, wine, beer, or vegetable broth into the broiling pan before broiling adds moisture and flavor during cooking?

Some of my favorite recipes from the book are the Sauteed Trout with wild mushrooms, Potato flaked Fillets, the various Buttermilk based coatings, Northwest Salmon Burritos, Salsa stuffed Trout and Smoked Salmon Salad.

This is a cookbook for any serious, healthy eating fisherman/cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars All-time Favorite Fish Recipes

Product Description
A totally fresh look at fish.

Focus on Freshwater Aquarium Fish is a valuable reference for fishkeepers at all levels. The book features a wide variety of fish illustrated in a dynamic way and offers practical advice for their care.

The book presents the fish based on their families or fishkeeping groups. These groupings consist of:- American and African Cichlids: bold inhabitants- Characins: from tetras to piranhas- Live-bearers: includes guppies and mollies- Killifish: short-lived beauties- Anabantids: air breathers including Bettas- Danios, Minnows and Rasboras- Catfish: found in tropic and temperate waters- Rainbowfish: tropical fish at home in tap water- Sharks and Loaches: bottomfeeders and efficient algae eaters- Barbs: active and gregarious- Oddballs: pufferfish, low-voltage eels, elegant predators and more- Goldfish: a wide variety of a perennial favorite.

Each section opens with an overview that introduces the range of fish within that group and explores their adaptations. The images and text provide details of the mature size and main characteristics of each fish, its behavior in the aquarium and a brief look at how it breeds.

The bright, colorful photographs display the fish swimming rather than as static side views. This evokes a clearer sense of the personality of each species. Freshwater fishkeepers will be delighted at the beauty and choice available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really nice photos of tropical fish
As the title clearly specifies, "Focus on Freshwater Aquarium Fish" it's not a book on setting up an aquarium. I don't understand why anyone would expect to find such information in a book that focus' on the fish.

What you do get is pages on pages of GREAT color photos of various common species of freshwater fish. The pics are superimposed on a white background and really stand out. There is some text describing the fish and it's behavior but not too much.

Every aquarist should have a such a book to show new fish enthusiasts or guests in your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe not to much information, but beautifal pics!
I saw this book at borders. I love it . There is virtualy no information on setting up tanks, or filtiration, but the fish set on a stunning white background is incredible.

3-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful picture book
This book is full of color illustrations derived from photos, which are often bigger than life size. Often the page is full of images of the same fish shot from different angles.Even the common goldfish is shown nicely. It is a good picture book foryoung children and armchair hobbyists.People who want to set up an aquarium should not buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The focus is on photos
This book is neither an 'encyclopedia' nor an 'atlas'. The title says it all i.e. it's a focus on aquarium fish. It's not about plants or filters or feeding requirements. If you're looking for a book with lots of info about fish keeping, this one is not for you. I bought it for the pleasure of the absolutely fantastic photography. All of the fish are presented with a white background so there is no distraction from the fish itself. This is a stunning, unique, artistic book. For this it has five stars in my opinion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy this only because of the pictures
...because there isn't much more to this book, than a lot of nice and colorful pictures. I was kind of disappointed, because there wasn't anything to learn from reading this book. The different species have just a small, kind of humouristic comment on the side. Nothing about water requirements or food.

The photos are great though, crystal sharp and in detail. My five year old son loves to look in this book, because there is so little text but so many large and colorful pictures. ... Read more

Product Description

Though Mexico is only one-fifth the size of the continental United States, it is home to nearly two-thirds as many freshwater fishes as those that swim the waters of the United States and Canada combined. Mexico's diverse freshwater fauna can be attributed to the country's highly varied physical geography, a wide latitudinal range, the largest river system in middle America, and, ironically, its oceans—many marine groups left the brine for the inland springs and never returned to the sea.

No one knew these Mexican freshwaters or the fish that inhabit them better than the late world-renowned ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller. A pioneer of the field, Miller undertook his first field excursion more than fifty years ago and, in the decades following, amassed the information necessary to write the first encyclopedia of Mexican inland ichthyology. Providing keys to more than 500 native species—accompanied by detailed distribution maps and illustrations—Freshwater Fishes of México offers a historical overview of the country's ichthyology, as well as syntheses of the unique biogeography of Mexican fishes and their current conservation status. Organized by family, the species accounts are supplemented with color galleries containing photographs of live fishes in their native environments and natural habitats. Exploring ecological, biological, and taxonomic issues, the book also considers the evolutionary history of the ichthyofauna itself and the human history of the scientists who researched it during the last several centuries.

The life's work of Robert Rush Miller, the long-awaited Freshwater Fishes of México will be welcomed not only by students of Mexican fishes, but by all ichthyologists working in Central and North America. This book will also find an audience among home aquarium hobbyists, fishery managers, conservation biologists, and environmental planners and managers.

Product Description
This comprehensive new book replaces and substantially expands upon the landmark Fishes of Arizona, which has been the authoritative source since it was first published in 1973. Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest is a one-volume guide to native and non-native fishes of the lower Colorado River basin, downstream from the Grand Canyon, and of the northern tributaries of the Sea of Cortez in the United States and Mexico. In all, there are in-depth accounts of more than 165 species representing 30 families. The book is not limited to the fish. It provides insights into their aquatic world with information on topography, drainage relations, climate, geology, vegetational history, aquatic habitats, human-made water systems, and conservation. A section of the book is devoted to fish identification, with keys to native and non-native families as well as family keys to species. The book is illustrated with more than 120 black-and-white illustrations, 47 full-color plates of native fishes, and nearly 40 maps and figures.

Many native fish species are unique to the Southwest. They posess interesting and unusual adaptations to the challenges of the region, able to survive silt-laden floods as well as extreme water temperatures and highly fluctuating water flows ranging from very low levels to flash floods. However, in spite of being well-adapted, many of the fish described here are threatened or endangered, often due to the acts of humans who have altered the natural habitat. For that reason, Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest presents a vast amount of information about the ecological relationships between the fishes it describes and their environments, paying particular attention to the ways in which human interactions have modified aquatic ecosystems—and to how humans might work to ensure the survival of rapidly disappearing native species. ... Product Description
This book provides a synthesis of taxonomic and ecological information on New Zealand’s freshwater fish fauna. New Zealand has been isolated in thesouthwestern Pacific Ocean since it separated from Gondwana during the Cretaceous period, some 80 million years ago. This prolonged geological isolation, combined with the islands’ very vigorous geological history, impacted by oceanic submergence, tectonic activity, mountain building extreme volcanism, and great climatic variability, create a dynamic scenario within which the New Zealand biota, including its freshwater fishes, have evolved over millions of years. These impacts have contributed to a highly dynamic biological history with undoubted though little understood extinction and vigorous colonisation of the islands’ fresh water. One of the key elements for understanding the origins and derivations of this fish fauna is that in all groups some or all of the species are diadromous, customarily spending a significant phase of their lives at sea. This has no doubt contributed in an important way the fauna’s origins As well, there has been frequent loss of diadromous behaviours leading, to species that have abandoned their sea-migratory behaviours and which now complete their entire lives in fresh water. The distribution patternsreflect these changinghabits, with diadromous species being broadly distributed but tending to be lowland in range, whereas the derived, non-diadromous species have narrower ranges, but are often found further inland and at high elevations. This book provides an ecological and historical synthesis of these divergent patterns across New Zealand’s geography and history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Book Indeed!

This is a superb freshwater aquarium book to have; every freshwater aquarium keeper owes it to himself or herself to get this one. It's packed with a lot of pertinent information on water temperature ranges, water types, care, habits, compatibility, etc. There are a lot of superb photographs that are a joy to explore. Walt Whitman once stated that he liked the feel of a good compact book that one could really get close to; well this is the one for freshwater aquarium buffs. Plenty of good reading with excellent photos! The plastic book cover is a nice touch to this fine paperback!

2-0 out of 5 stars Contra View but now tempered
OK, OK, maybe I am eating a bit of crow here!I'll let the review I first wrote stand (see below), but I have felt compelled to edit it with this addition.I have had the book for several weeks now, and when I saw that I was using it daily, and more than any other book I have on tropicals, I had to come back here and set the record straighter.

Yes the book is still irritating in its choice of index organization. But on the positive side, it has many more species in it than I ever thought I'd be interested in.As I get further into the hobby and become more curious and more exposed to new species of fish, I find that this book usually has them in it.It is actually a pretty good quick reference guide for taking to the aquarium store and for doing some arm-chair study. Not in depth study, as the blurbs are just that, blurbs. But it is quite useful and deserves more than I gave it previously.

(First review) After reading all of the previous reviews, I got the impression that this was a book I needed. Somehow, somewhere all the way I got the wrong impression. I have had the book less than a day and already I am irritated with it. For one thing, it is organized by English common names. And not even "pencilfish, brown"! No! "Brown Pencilfish"!! It makes no sense.I don't know alot of these fish by their common name. Pencilfish maybe, but not BROWN pencilfish! Sheesh. If I wanted to find all the pencilfish I'd need to roam thru the index. This way of indexing also separates species of the same genus from each other. You have the various rasboras all over the place! It is a very good book for looking up various species that might not be in the shorter books, but the manner in which the editor chose to set it up is just plain awkward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mini-dictionary of Freshwater Fishes - Recommeded!
This book is small in size and light in weight. I think this book is good for you to carry outward, especially for you to shop around the aquarium shops. But don't think that small in size or light in weight is "EQUAL" to "thin content", at least I don't think so. This book have RICH CONTENTS and give me a fast guide for most of freshwater fishes, which may be useful for you to determine which fishes you can bought to your home. Price is also acceptable. Overall I recommened this book for leisure purpose.
