Product Description
Invertebrate Zoology deals with the animals that have no backbones, including the shrimps, crabs, sponges, worms, snails and squids. This book deals specifically with the invertebrates that spend all or part of their lifecycle in a freshwater environment. (As is usual and as in the previous edition, aquatic insects are excluded due to their vast numbers.) The invertebrate species far outnumber the vertebrate species, and a through understanding of aquatic invertebrate zoology is essential to understanding the community structure of freshwater environments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book with keys that work!
This is an excellent book that belongs on the self of anyone who wants to be considered up-to-speed on the critters that dwell in our waters. I've had the opportunity to use the annelid and the tardigrade keys thus far, and both worked wonderfully. The general information for all of the groups is well written and up-to-date, and the addition of color plates is a nice touch. Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
Great read, definitely basic, but ties together some loose ends that may have been left out that veterans take for granted when teaching beginners. I recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Freshwater Fishing: Step-By-Step
Its a good book for beginners.Simple to read and understand. The book is organized well with all the needed techniques for fresh water fishing. I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reading
this is good for beginners and a refresher for some of us who haven't been fishing for several years

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Primer to get started
I have started fishing more with my sons, so I thought it would be useful to buy a few books to make sure that I know the lingo, and do not make a fool of myself. Cliff Hauptman's books is a nice primer with lots of useful information. In it, he discusses the basic equipment and tackle needed, and various types of fish that are commonly sought. I found the information quite useful, and well worth the read. Some of the pictures and diagrams are not the best, but I felt more confident the next time I went out on the lake with my boys. Plus, we caught more fish, which is always nice.

If you are new to fishing, and looking for a quick read to get started, then I recommend this book. If you are more seasoned, this is probably not a great choice. Good luck, and see you at the lake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I fished quite a bit growing up, but got away from it while in college. Recently I wanted to get back into it, so I needed some more grown-up gear. This book was quite valuable in helping me figure out what equipment I needed and what I didn't. The author's reccomendations of what lures to buy were especially helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, sad to see its out of print
Along with being a comprehensive aquaculture guide, this book is also unique in stressing the importance of sustainability and small scale aquaculture practices. Very interesting examples global aquaculture, with an emphasis on N. American culture and species. This book acts as both a great research tool and guide for aquaculturist, but also illustrates many dynamic examples of low-imput high-output agriculture methods. Derives many great examples from Asian aquaculture practices that are not only productive but ecologically friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freshwater Aquaculture:Handbook for Small Scale Fish Culture
Freshwater Aquaculture by William McLarney is a must have book for the beginning aquaculturist and a great reference book for those with more experience. Full of information on what works and why, what does not work, and what to do when things go awry, it goes beyond the current thinking andoffers thought provoking ideas for innovation and experimentation.Aquaculture is a science, but it does not have a 'one size fits all' recipefor success, so knowing all the options helps you craft (or fine tune) anaquatic environment that works for you and your situation. If you have anyinterest in aquaculture, buy this book, you won't regret it ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to fishing
This book is a good, solid reference for most things to do with fishing.Experienced anglers won't benefit as much from this book since it seems targeted more for beginners and folks with modest levels of fishing experience. That's not to say there won't still be some beneficial tips or knowledge for experienced people, however. They will just receive less benefit from this book.

Overall, it covers the major areas of fishing - gear, techniques, boat control, structure, seasonal movements, etc.It illustrates a few useful knots to cover the most common situations, but is a little weak in that area.It contains lots of clear photos and is a great book to get one started on the fine sport of fishing. The text is simply written and clearly explains the basic concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good read for someone who had been out of fishing for a while

4-0 out of 5 stars Good all around freshwater fishing book
I was looking for a book that covered all freshwater fish species. I am mostly a bass & panfish fisherman, but I do get occasional opportunities to angle for something else. I wanted a book that would allow me to read a chapter on a specific type of fish and know some good lure types and tactics to try if such an opportunity arose. Overall, this book does a good job at meeting those requirements. On a few of the species the lure information seemed a little sparse and some of the information on tactics was information that was already talked about earlier in the same chapter. Some of the tactics also specified the use of a boat/fish finder, which may not work the best if you are fishing from shore or a canoe/kayak. The book covers most freshwater gamefish species found in the US(bass, walleye, trout, etc), but I would also have liked to have seen a chapter on non-gamefish (carp, gar, etc). Overall a recommended book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendation
Product was exactly as described. Arrived right on time when I needed it for the holidays. Thanks so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners
This is the perfect book for beginners. If you car just now getting into fishing, this is a great first book, no matter what type of fish you going for.It talks about different type of fishing and goes into details on how to catch them, and also some good boating/tackle info.

I would say for beginners, like me, this should be the first book you buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Fishes of Arkansas
    Fishes of Arkansas

Robison and Buchanan have done a good job of describing all of the fishes of Arkansas and showing where they can be found. The color pictures of actual specimens are superior to those in Fishes of Oklahoma and the drawings in Fishes in Kansas. There is a lot of information given, comparable to Fishes of Missouri. For people interested in fish, the book is a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well done
This is a thorough - and to my knowledge, the only - treatise on native fishes of Arkansas, with photos, maps, and descriptions.A must for anyone interested in the taxonomy of Arkansas fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aesthetics & Taxonomy
In short, this is a good way to find a fish you have picked up
while you have been fishing.Or it is a nice view of the variety
    of Fish in AR.
It functions well as a text book or a coffee table book.
Plus, It is an especially good ice breaker if you have taken
classes which the author taught at Southern Arkansas University.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Diversity Documented with Beautiful Pictures
Even as the Clinton presidency draws to a close, Arkansas remains the undiscovered state.Fishes of Arkansas is a visual treat--a species by species documentation of the incredible diversity of freshwater fish foundin that state's streams and waterways.Arkansas is an inland state, so onemight imagine that a fish survey would document only a narrow array ofgreen and brown game fish, of little interest to those outside the bait andhook hobbies.Fishes of Arkansas demonstrates instead the incrediblebiodiversity found in the numerous fish species located in Arkansas.Hereare pictures of gorgeous fish, large and small, including many of intensebeauty and tremendous color. The darter section of the book, featuringmany species endemic not only to Arkansas but in many cases to a singleriver in Arkansas, shows the reader spectacular, unforgettable fish.Thenarrative is simple and straightforward--each entry is a separate species, usually with a picture. The grouping is organized by family, and theauthors provide judicious use of light explanatory and summation materialto tie the individual entries together. If you need something on yourcoffee table or shelves which is light, pleasant picture-filled reading butnot fluff, try Fishes of Arkansas. ... The deluxe, comprehensive guide to the native species of Mississippi

    Download Plain Text version

Where was the largest bass caught in Mississippi? What streams are sometimes home to the gulf sturgeon? How can an angler tell a grass pickerel from a walleye?

In Inland Fishes of Mississippi, Stephen T. Ross answers these questions and many more.

Mississippi waters are some of the richest inland fish habitats in the United States. In fact, only four states have more native fish than Mississippi's 204. Inland Fishes of Mississippi is for anglers and nature lovers who want to learn more about this thriving diversity.

Introductory chapters present the history of the study of fish in Mississippi, the distribution patterns of species, important conservation issues, and valuable information on identifying fish by examining body shape and structure.

Following these are illustrated keys to all the families of fish known to inhabit inland waters. Each key is a detailed guide to identifying the specific species within a family of fish. Keys include:

    • color photographs of freshly collected examples
    • meanings of scientific names for fish
    • descriptions of color and physical changes
    • maximum sizes of fish, including records for game fish
    • precise maps of distribution
    • vital information on habitat requirements, feeding, and behavior
    • tips on where to catch a species
    • status of conservation efforts

For both the casual angler and the ichthyologist, Inland Fishes of Mississippi will prove a constant resource and an irreplaceable asset for identifying, observing, and catching the state's various species.

Stephen T. Ross is professor of biological sciences and Curator of Fishes at the University of Southern Mississippi. The editor for ecology and ethology of Copeia, he has also published articles in numerous journals such as American Naturalist, Environmental Biology of Fishes, and Transactions of the American Fisheries Society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Inland Fishes of Mississippi
If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to the native fishes of Mississippi, you need look no further. Not only does this work include all native and exotic species of fish in Mississippi but also extensive biological information on each. This volume should prove useful to not only a well versed field biologist, but also anyone interested in fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of Fishes for the Price
I have to say up front that I am a bit prejudiced here.Dr. Ross is responsible for my current interest in fishes and I have been looking forward to this book for a while. That being said let me tell you what is good about this book... #1 The keys are outstanding, they are made so that the expert or layman can use them.Key identification points are well illustrated and explained #2 The species accounts are the best I have ever seen. There is excellent information on the biology and conservation concerns of each species. There is also a brief section on the meaning of each scientific name that will be of interest to the professional and beginner. #3 Dr. Ross included an excellent glossary and bibliography that will make further research and understanding easy. #4 There is also a section on the history of Ichthyology in the Southeast US in general and Mississippi in particular.

If you are interested in the fishes of the Southeast US this book will be useful and entertaining. It will be indispensable if you study fishes in any Mississippi river or Gulf drainage.I can remember my first day in class, thinking that we where just going to look at a bunch of minnows.I know better now, and this book will explain why.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reference for Every Aquarist
American Aquarium Fishes by Robert J. Goldstein whose PhD is in microbiology and parasitology and is a member of The American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, among others, is a reference that should be in the library of every aquarist who is interested in native American fish. Too little is written on this subject and this book covers ninety percent of everything you need to find, collect and keep these fish. The only drawback I see is that, although there numerous are color plates in the center section of the book, I would have liked to see all of the photographs in color. Bottom line? Anything I have read by this author is well worth the price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Aquarium Fishes (W L Moody, Jr, Natural History Series)
Great book fo native fishes written for the beginner and advanced hobbiest alike. Easy reading with many color photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good.
The book in its entirety is fairly good. The authors tried to cover a broad scope. This book may be useful for the breeder in that there is specific information on each species. Please note that you may need to combine the information in this text with information from other sources (print, web, etc.) to take complete care of your native fishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The depth and detail and the vivid photos are impressive
This comprehensive reference volume will appeal to both specialty and general-interest libraries: American Aquarium Fishes provides over 118 color and over 200 black and white photos of various species of aquarium fish, providing detailed discussions on where to find native fishes, how to collect and transport them around the globe, and regional rules of collecting. The depth and detail and the vivid photos are impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best reference to date!
It's about time that a talented group of aquarium hobbyist (who are also biologists I believe) got together to write a book that the layman can understand and appreciate. You will not find convuluted passages common in the scientific literature. Each species account is well written and contains the information that the hobbyist wants.

Goldstein, Harper, and Edwards are well known hobbyist and if there are any real experts in the field, it's these guys.

This is an all around great reference for the North American native fish hobbyist. ... Read more
