Product Description
Expanded and updated to include an additional 44 species, this is a handy guide to those fishes that are likely to be observed by anybody visiting or diving on the coral reefs of the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific to a depth of sixty meters. Accessible to amateur marine life enthusiasts, this book is the first comprehensive guide of its kind. It enables the reader to quickly identify 2,118 species of fish and includes over 2,500 color illustrations depicting the major forms of each species--male, female, immature, or geographical varieties. The text proceeds according to region, depicting each species and its varieties, and offering information on its geographic range and where on the coral reef itself the fish may be found. Important identification characteristics are highlighted on every color plate. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations different from reality
This guide has the merit to include a really big number of reef fishes species, but I discovered that many fishes have different colors in the field, often too much different than in the illustrations of the book ... The guide can be valid when you can take pictures in water and then, calmly at home, you can looking for features highlighted in the book, often little evident in field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book on tropical fishes
I bought this book since I am a volunteer at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia. This book is a tremendous resouce especially in the Tropical Diver Exhibit which has many species of tropical fish. It is helpful in identification and lists the fish by scientific as well as common names. I would highly recommend this guide for fish identification, and many of the volunteers use this guide as their resource as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice for divers
I bought the book because i need the names of the fishes in the caribbean, where i dive now, and i thinks that it is a very nice book, very usefull and with a low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE field guide to bring on a scuba trip
An amazingly well done flied guide useful for even advanced fish enthusiasts and scuba divers. I have used this book on dive trips to the Egyptian red sea, the sea of Cortez in Mexico and to Cuba, as well as while walking trough several aquariums in the US, and I have hardly ever failed to find a tropical fish species I observed in this book. The illustrations are well done and include juveniles, sex differences and regional color variants. In addition to the geographic range of a species, the likely occurrence on the reef (lagoon, outward reef, sand ...), the depth ranges and information about fish behavior are indicated. I have found this additional information extremely useful, especially when trying to identify one of several similar species.

The book is divided into a Indopacific and a Carribean part, and in addition to the species descriptions there is a short general introduction to corral reefs and fish biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars a little treasure
this one is a real must. if I had to choose a single fish ID book to bring along in a dive trip, this handy book would be the one. it is probably more usefull for indo-pacific fishes but also atlantic/caribbean fishes part is pretty good. i guess it is the most complete book on fish identification i ever bought. ... Product Description

This beautifully illustrated guide covers an unprecedented range of species that may be sighted along the coastline or offshore by the whale watcher, bird watcher, fisher, boating enthusiast, or natural history buff. Designed in a handy pocket size, the book provides concise information for identifying the invertebrates, mammals, birds, turtles, fish, sharks and rays, and even floating seaweeds and common algae that live along the Atlantic coast and offshore from North Carolina to the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

With range maps and text on pages directly opposite the full-color illustrations, the book makes identification of more than two hundred species of offshore wildlife quick and easy. Special features include full-page spreads to compare similar species of seabirds, and inserts to help identify whales by their blowhole patterns, diving, and other behaviors.

Those with an interest in ocean life know that surprises often appear dangling at the end of a fishing line, floating beside the boat, washed up on the shore, or flying overhead. This is the ultimate guide for those who are curious about such creatures and the marine environment in which they dwell.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed
Although the graphics were in detail, as an avid saltwater flyfisherman I was disapointed in the discriptions given for the species...When Mackrel was discribedthere was no mentions of Tinker Mackrel a major food souce for Striped Bass who feed on this fish.( What I found interesting was the color plate for"Alantic Mackrel" looked a lot alike Tinker Mackrel.) When Weak fish were discribed a total length of 20 inch was given. I personally caught and released a Weak Fishwell over 28 inches weighing in at 8 pounds.I did not bother to read the rest of the book. I was hoping I could learn something but, I have no idea what the total facts are in species I know not much about. I just don't think there was enough research given when putting this book togather.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent portable field guide
This is a nice little book that covers wildlife of the North Atlantic and easily fits in one's backpack. The illustrations are excellent and the descriptions brief, but comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent FIELD guide
From Newfoundland to the Azores, I found myself allways pleased, for having such a remarkable friend...to share knowledge and passion about the blue and the magical sea creatures. It helped me a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, practical guide
Succint offshore guide that is perfect for outdoor seashore walks. Fits well in the pocket and has ideal illustrations packaged for convenient rapid reference. Text is pertinent and complements the colored illustrations in a concise relevant way. I can't wait for the next volume addressing the southern shores.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasure in every way
This book is a delight to look at: the illustrations are stunning, the design is clean and elegant. It's a delight to hold: the binding, the quality of the paper, the form factor. And it's a delight to read: the text is clear and concise, while packed with detail. For me, the most compelling aspect of the book is the illustrations, which Lynch brings to life on the pages. I unhesitantly recommend this book to anyone who takes pleasure in the wildlife of the North Atlantic. ... Read more

este libro es una oportunidad unica de conocer más de cerca a nuestras especies más admiradas, con la mejor información y las mejores ilustraciones.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick delivery good pocket reference
I am a So Cal dive pro and use these reference materials for my students. This is a good resource. The small size is handy. The reference material is good and the illustrations are good but lack the same value as photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide. Very useful
An excellent field guide for fishing or just general marine knowledge.

I live in México and greatly appreciated that the author included the Spanish names for almost all the species.

There is information on the edibility of each species and any that are toxic.

The illustrations are all in color and very well done.

Just the right size to drop into a Ziplock bag and take fishing.

Overall, an excellent book. Just what I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fishes of the Pacific
Great book at a great (used) price. Not sure how many of the exotics I'll ever see (from Alaska to Peru no less), but a really informative handbook selling for MUCH more at scuba shops.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fisherman's field guide
I grew up in So. California, so I've been fishing and diving the Pacific for many years. Now I live in Mexico and fish/dive the Gulf of California. I have never found a better field guide for these waters. I keep a copy on my boat and use it constantly.

The full-color illustrations are excellent and the descriptions are precise and accurate. It is laid out logically and is very easy to use. I've settled many arguments and won many bets on the docks with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely story and pictures!
I bought this book for my son's birthday after he fell in love with it from the library. It has beautiful illustrations and you can sing the story with the melody of "over in the meadow".We also purchased the CD from the author's website where she reads the story and sings the song afterwards.Lovely gift idea too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Easy/Fun to read...
even if you're not a fan of ocean themed lit like i am, you'll love this book. for 1-6 yr olds, it is a fabulous read. the cadence of the rhyme and beauty of the artwork (illustrations) will keep YOU, the adult reader, enthralled as well as your little rugrats, the listeners.

it is supremely aggravating to do a night-time read-a-loud of a book that doesn't flow well, or halfway rhymes, or has a horrid plot-line or diaglogue.no such worries here.

over in the ocean...

grind said the mother, we grind said the three (or 2 or 4 whatever)

its catchy w/o being annoying, and simple and...best of all...not too long not too short!

great for learning your numbers, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review
REVIEWED BY: Wayne S. Walker, reviewer with Stories for Children Magazine

Have you ever wondered what it is like under the ocean around a coral reef? Following the same rhyming pattern of the popular nineteenth century song "Over in the Meadow" by Olive A. Wadsworth, author Marianne Berkes describes the lives of mother sea creatures and their babies in the coral reef so that children can understand more about them and have fun while learning about nature. One octopus squirts. Two parrotfish grind. Three clownfish dart. Four stingrays stir. Five puffer fish puff. Six dolphins jump. Seven angelfish graze. Eight needlefish skitter. Nine gruntfish grunt. And ten seahorses flutter. As the author notes, "The animals really do squirt, grind, dart, etc., as they have been portrayed."

The striking and realistic illustrations by Jeanette Canyon are all constructed entirely from polymer clay. The back of the book has the entire song with the music, along with several curriculum components, including information on ocean family babies, the coral reef community, the animals mentioned in the book, and even descriptions of how the illustrations were made. There is also an explanation of how children can sing the song with different finger or hand movements. In addition, the book reinforces learning to count from one to ten. This book has won several awards, including Learning Magazine's Teacher's Choice Award. Children will find it fascinating both to read the words and see the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect book for an short overview
The book is really good if you need a short overview of the fishes in the great barrier reef and coral sea. Every group is explained by a short text and most of the fishes are shown by picture. So it's perfect if you want to dive in the region and identify the fishes you'll see.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Fish ID book for all
This is one of the best fish ID books for Pacific fishes. Wonderful pictures and information about families as well as species.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive reference book
Many years ago I bought the first edition of this book for the Australian National University Scuba Club.It has survived many, many trips to the Great Barrier Reef on club trips, where it has served as our primary reference for fish identification. The photographs are excellent, and the inclusion of the juvenile forms of many fish is a great asset. Now rebound after years of exacting use by hundreds of keen divers, stormy trips on the high seas, and trans-shipment in small boats to our destination island, the club is still taking its copy of this book along on its annual two week long GBR trips. So, with a history of use such as that, I was excited to find that there was a new edition with additional material! I had to get this for myself, and quite simply - it's got everything that made it such a great book before, plus now there is more.Well done! I recommend this book (and edition) highly to all of my scuba students, and can also do so here.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book did not arrived but the money payed back
Unfortunately the pending book did not arrived,
When I complained after the promised lead time the Amazonoffered me that they send me the book again - it is missed somewhere - without shipping cost, it was correct,
But after a few days I changed my idea - the reason of the long lead time - and I cancelled my order, and the Amazon payed me back the full price of the book!
This is a correct company but the process is not working well!
You could try , you do not have any risk !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for identifying intertidal organisms
If you are looking for a reference book for identifying inter and sub-tidal life in the Pacific Northwest, this is the book for you.Beautifully illustrated and comprehensive, it allows the reader to explore a world at once easily accessible and at the same time full of mystery. The photography is outstanding, making identification of marine organisms easier and more accurate. When combined with further study and instruction, it offers a glimpse into a complex and fascinating world seldom explored.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning masterpiece
This book is truly stunning masterpiece, very nicely organized with lots of great photos. I highly recommend this to anybody and everybody who even tries scuba diving on the west coast (I dive every week in Monterey, CA).

I have two small issues...

1. the book arrived with small damage on the back cover. The package was very nice and the book could not be damaged during shipping. Amazon should do a bit better QA before they ship the books.

2. the book is really great however the format is more "coffee table style" - hard cover with sleeve. It makes it virtually impossible to take it with me for my dive trips and look into it right after diving without damaging it. I wish there would be next to this version also softcover version with easy to flip pages divers and nature lovers could take to the field. Probably the best would be Kindle version I could take on my smartphone with me:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
We spend a lot of time exploring the beaches of Puget Sound and hadn't been able to find a good guide book to what we were finding. Some books were drawings only that were difficult to match to the critters we found. Some were so thorough that it was difficult to get past all the writing to find what we needed. Some were very brief. Then we discovered this book, which is the perfect blend of excellent photographs that are easy to match up with the actual creatures, enough information to be helpful but not overpowering, and contains far more creatures than any other book we found. It has become a valuable treasure to us as we discover marine life.I would highly recommend it!

Product Description
These four companion books take a dramatic look at our watery planet.

Constituting one of the most numerous and diverse groups of invertebrates on Earth, fish are the undoubted masters of the underwater world. Equally at home in fresh or saltwater, they have evolved to occupy every conceivable water-filled niche. Fish have adapted to survive in a range of different environments from the deepest ocean depths to muddy freshwater puddles, and from the freezing waters of the Antarctic to hot desert springs.Extraordinary Fish illustrates the amazing transformations in body for and behavior that have enabled fish to take up many diverse and fascinating lifestyles. Chapter one introduces the ways in which fish have adapted to their watery world, with examples from the deep sea and other inhospitable habitats. In an environment where predators abound, survival is of prime concern, and Chapter two explores, among other things, the many ways that fish camouflage and arm themselves for attach and defense.Chapter three transports the reader into the sensory world of fish. As well as extraordinary powers of sight, sound, and smell, some fish can detect electric fields, glow with luminescent light, and navigate unerringly across vast oceans. In the fourth and final chapter, the color sex life of many fish is revealed. ... Read more

Product Description
Biology of Antarctic Fish presents the most recent findings on the biology of fish in the unique environment of the Antarctic ocean. At present the year-round temperature of the coastal waters is very near -1,87 ° C, the equilibrium temperature of the ice-seawater mixture. This extremely low temperature affects different levels of organization of fish life: individuals, organ systems, cells, organelles, membranes, and molecules. Exploring ecology, evolution, and life history as well as physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of Antarctic fish the book describes the mechanisms of cold adaptation at all these levels. Product Description
