5-0 out of 5 stars Libro para todas las edades

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Introduction to Seahorses
This book is useful little introduction to the world of seahorses. If you would like to set up a seahorse aquarium, I would also recommend finding a good book that covers general issues related to keeping a saltwater aquarium.

The author has an appropriately cautionary tone with his readers, knowing that keeping seahorses is not an easy endeavour. It requires patience in setting up a tank that will encourage good health; it requires diligence to test and maintain water quality; and, it requires consistency in feedings.

For those who are up to the challenge, this book will get you on your way to keeping some of the most graceful fish in the sea.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not what it says on the cover.
The author does know a lot about the care of seahorses, as he tells us many time. He does not however, let us in on his knowledge. A great book to give to your mom as a source of basic information on seahorses. Pretty much useless for a hobbiest.

Except, of course, dont get seahorses...

Not the message I want from a book on the care of seahorses. And none of the information you would expect from the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and caring
The author is incredibly devoted to the lives of seahorses. He really takes it upon himself to let the reader know the risks involved in keeping seahorses in captivity. The book could use more information on tank design for seahorse raising success.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read for beginners
Not a bad book but is not extensive enough to become knowledgeable for cichlids has all the basics in set up different types of cichlids where they are etc, and is a definate read for the novice but needs a more detailed account for a person who already knows the basics

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful with a lack of pics
I thought that this book was very helpful in giving me information that I needed to breed my convinct cichlids, and set up the tank accordingly. Though the pictures were appropriate for the subject and well chosen, they were few and far between. I would have much preferred a color photo for every cichlid mentioned, but of course that's just too much to ask for in a book at the price that it was. All in all, it was well written, but needed visual aids of better quality to make it a 5-star book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a good price performer. OK for novice.
This book really tries to lay out what you are going to get into if you want to get into keeping, and possibly breeding, African Cichlids. Though it may leave some wanting more, at $5.56 (USD) it really packs alot of information and is a good summary of what you are in for with this intriguing hobby. Agreed, some of the information might be laid out a little more clearly. But it also presents a great deal more about all aspects of raising Africans that you don't get out of books costing $30, $50, even $100 (list price). I recommend it highly to a beginner. To one who has been involved in the hobby for a while, you may get more from rec.aquaria.freshwater.cichlids. But for the novice, I'd suggest you go for it before you decide to buy fish or a tank. It may help you avoid costly mistakes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
This book is disappointing. It focuses too much on breeding cichlids, yet it claims to be a book for beginners.Beginners are not interested in breeding cichlids, they just want to keep their fish alive. The book is also very vague. For example, when discussing the proper PH level for Malawi cichlids it says keep it above 7.What does that mean, 7.5, 8.2 ? ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Looks Good, Litle Help
This is a nice looking book with lots of great pictures. Thats about where the positives end. There is a lot of misinformation in this book. The information seems to be from a much earlier edition. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reefer Madness!
I'm a long-time retail pet worker, but so long out of the business that I've forgotten a lot of what I used to know about reef keeping - and now realize how much the husbandry has changed! My brother-in-law has far surpassed me in this field, and recommended this book. It's an excellent source of succinct info on many a variety of non-fish reef inhabitants. The information is consistently presented and easy to understand (even for my rapidly failing synapses). For the novice or mid-level reefer this book can mean the difference between happy inverts and a combative reef.

My only qualms with this book is that I found it kind of light in the shrimp area, found the star-rated pricing guide kind of confusing, and really found the statement about cost being tied to size wasteful (isn't that a foregone conclusion?) I also didn't find the information on compatibility comprehensive enough - it discusses the compatibility from the perspective of that section (coral, crabs, shrimp, etc) for the most part: it would have been better IMHO to have some kind of key that rated each type of sectioned animals to each other. But - maybe that's for a more advanced version of the book. And one suggestion: add a little section on the best reef-safe fish. Yeah, I know it's an invert book but that would make this book indispensable!

Please, don't let these mentions hold you up from buying the tome - you'll still be happy you did! Happy Reefing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Organized Book!!
This book is organized in such a simple and straightforward way, making it SO EASY to find compatible invertebrates!Every one is listed with the exact same questions, so the specifications most important to you are easily researched and eliminated if they aren't a fit.

Questions include:
WHAT size?
WHAT does it eat?
WHERE is is from?
WHAT does it cost?
HOW compatible with other invertebrates?
WHAT water flow rate?
HOW much light?
WILL fish pose a threat?
WILL it threaten fish?
WHAT to watch out for?
and
WILL it reproduce in an aquarium?

For me the most important questions were WHAT size?, HOW compatible with other invertebrates?, WILL fish pose a threat?, and WILL it threaten fish?I think this book is essential for anyone who is stocking a reef tank.Once you determine what invertebrates will work for you, you can research those more in depth in something like "A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Invertebrates 500+ Essential-to-Know Aquarium Species," which is more descriptive but NOT so well organized.I finished this book "What Invertebrates" and promptly ordered their "What Fish: A Buyer's Guide to Reef Fish," which I'm hoping is organized in just as simple a way.

4-0 out of 5 stars what invertebrates
Good book for a beginner starting with invertebrates.
It gives helpful direction for mixing species and what not to do.
Good selection of invertebrates that the average person would want to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I got this book from the library as we are starting a nano marine aquarium. After having it for several weeks I've decided to order it. It is very informative and contains all the key critters (both intentional and the hitchhiker) that you'd need to know about.Lots of colorful pics and every page notes how compatible they are with fish, other inverts, lighting needs, feeding needs, etc.A great resource!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginner!!
This is a wonderful book.Lots of good information from setting up your tank to picking goldfish.Just what I was looking for.I've had goldfish for over 20 years and this book is a great refresher for me.Just wanted to make sure I was doing everything right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read for the novice goldfish keeper.
I found this book to be very useful in preparing me to get my first goldfish.I would recommend reading it before you go out and buy your aquarium and fish, because it has lots of information about selecting an aquarium and setting it up.It also describes some of the different types of goldfish, so you can determine what type would be best for you (some are not as hardy as others and so are not good for beginners).

The book is rather short, but it's meant as more of a basic informative guide for the beginning goldfish keeper rather than as a detailed manual for advanced raising/breeding of goldfish. It's full of useful tips on everything from how to make your aquarium aesthetically pleasing, to what types of goldfish are best kept together. It also talks a little bit about the history of the goldfish species and about goldfish anatomy, and why some types are more prone to problems than others. The author stresses the importance of maintaining a clean aquarium and preventing health problems before they start.

I own several of the Barron's line of pet-keeping manuals, and I've found it to be a very good series.I would recommend this book to someone who's thinking about getting their first goldfish; it's a fun and informative read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for very basic information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive series for fish ID and husbandry
There is really only one true complaint I can make regarding this volume, it is literally nothing but almost 400 pages devotes entirely to wrasses and parrotfish.
Which brings me to the best part of this book: it's 400 pages of wrasses and parrotfish.

Now, to be fair wrasses are one of the biggest fish families, but the length is entirely justified. While the parrotfish section is still of very high quality, it is of limited use to aquarists due to their rarity in the fish trade.

First the book itself: this isn't something you'll want on a dive boat or to take to the fish store. This is a lovely, well-bound hardback with good picture printing. It holds up to heavy handling well.

Every species described (and it covers every fish I've ever heard of, I know of no omissions in this volume) includes at least one, and for most wrasse species multiple, beautiful color photographs. There is usually a juvenile, adult, and female example of every species due to the variant patterns between sexes and ages. All of the pictures are of high quality and are taken well.

The fish themselves are broken up by taxonomy, and every genus gets a brief summary of the species and fish within the genus and some of what an aquarist or diver can expect from them. Each species is described by scientific name, common name (or names), and maximum size. From there it the depth of coverage varies widly based on how commonly they are encountered in the wild or the tropical fish trade, ranging from a few sentences to a full page or more.It tends to cover biology and behavior in the wild, captive care, minimum aquarium size and temperature, and finally a "aquarium suitability index".Finally, any other pertinent remarks round out the entry. In general, this includes the most impressive and comprehensive coverage of any given animal I've encountered in any book.

In and of itself this is a poor reference for an aquarist or diver due to how limited the scope is.However, the reef fishes series is by far the most impressive, in-depth, and ambitious attempt to provide an incredible reference series on marine life.If you have series interest in learning about fish for any purpose other than basic identification this is by far the best investment.Unfortunately at the moment another reference is required since there are still multiple volumes left to round out the series.Still, there's more information per dime in these than anything else I've seen.Volumes 1 through 4 (though only volume 1 is actually labelled by volume, the rest are labelled by two of the larger groups covered within) are well worth it and honestly necessary to really get the most out of this book.I cannot recommend these books highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Scott Michael
Wrasses and Parrotfishes is another excellent book in Scott Michael's Reef Fishes series of books. This book is filled with information by one the hobby's foremost experts on the husbandry of marine fish in captivity. This volume is packed with captive care information and incredible photos of these beatiful and fascinating groups of fishes. I highly recommend that any serious wrasse fanatic include this book in his or her library. The information in this book will save fish lives and improve the aquartist's identification and husbandry skills. This book is worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reef Fishes--All Volumes
Everything written by Scott Michael is EXCELLENT! He's my favorite aquatic author. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND all of his books!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reef Fishes Book Yet
Of all the books in this series, I think this is the most spectacular. Great information and species to die for are here, cover to cover. Scott has outdone himself with this volume. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great step-by-step guide for beginners
Being a fresh water aquarium hobbist since I was 6 years old, I always wanted to start a marine aquarium but was always afraid, because I always heard about the far higher costs, the "cycling time" that meant that you could insert new fishes only after one month you setup your system, and the far more complicated maintenance. But this book demystified everything for me.

It is a step-by-step guide on how to setup your first salt water aquarium without entering into unecessary explanations. Following this book you can build your own system and have fishes in it in less than a week -- and I am counting here the time for you to visit some stores to research prices and getting acquainted with the products you will have to buy.

The quality of the book is top-notch: excellent paper, excellent design, hard-cover. The problem, though, is that it lacks more illustrations and some are very deceitful. It seems that the author just wrote the text and the publishing house had to insert some pictures to go along. So sometimes there are some boxes alerting the reader on some fishes to avoid and the publisher put a picture of a fish there to illustrate, problem is that it isn't from the fish the author is talking about!

I could setup my first salt water tank following the steps presented in this book but I changed some stuff that the author failed to mention:

1. Filter: he suggests two hang-on wet/dry filters and no word is given to canister filters, which require less maintenance and are quieter. I chose the later.

2. Illumination: he says only to put two lamps without explaining the detials of which kind of lamp you should use. I've done my research and for the kind of system he recommends (fish with live rock a.k.a. Berlin system) you should use one 5500º K or 6500º K lamp plus a blue "Actinic". He also failed to mention that you should buy a timer to automatically turn on and off the lamps (the first one should be turned on for 8 hours/day and the second one should be turned on for 12 hours/day).

3. Electrical connection: failed to mention that you need to have a ground-fault interruptor (a.k.a. GFCI); I bougth mine at Home Depot.

These are the only three things that I changed from what is written on the book. I also bought two other great books for choosing fishes and invertebrates and believe me, all other books are far harder to follow that this little but effective guide.

Another problem with this books is that the author constantly says that he will explain how to do a "fresh water dip" on Chapter 7 and how this is the most important thing for preventing diseases, however in nowhere in the book (including Chapter 7) this procedure is taught. I had to learn how to do this from another book (The Conscientious Marine Aquarist). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Strange Choices of Fish
This is a beautiful book, and the author tries to be comprehensive for the most part, but there are too many gorgeous pictures and detailed articles about fish that really aren't suitable for brackish aquariums.Far too many of the fish in the book don't live naturally in brackish conditions, and I found the full-page photo of the discus beautiful but badly out of place in this book, even with the caption that it's not suitable for brackish conditions. So why include it at all in this book?I'd been hoping for more information on the many, many North American brackish killis and pupfishes, but other than a brief mention of Florida flagfish, an even briefer mention of sheepshead killis, and a throwaway sentence about all of the others, that was it.There are the lengthy treatments of monos, scats, archerfishes and mudskippers that one would expect, but the articles about most of the cichlids--other than the chromides--and the rainbowfishes and so on made it seem as if the author was trying desperately to fill out the book but equally determined to ignore many genuinely brackish water fish. Why leave out the blue fin killis, rainwaters and so on?They may not be readily obtainable in stores, but you can find them on-line without much trouble, they're easy to maintain in their customary brackish conditions, active and interesting, and they'll spawn happily.Much easier for the average person to keep than say, trying to maintain most of those freshwater fish in a brackish tank.To be honest, as I read the articles about keeping cichlids, rainbowfish and tetras in even minimal brackish conditions, I kept asking myself, why bother? Why not just keep them in freshwater where they belong? While this book does have a great deal of useful information, the major inclusion of non-brackish water fish seemed a strange and potentially misleading choice, and the omission of several easy-to-keep, genuinely brackish water fish was disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars comment on previous reviews
This is the ultimate book for the brackish water enthusiast.
Covers just about everything. Will satisfy most readers.
Previous reviewers commented that it could have included more on habitat and plants found there. This is unfortunate as the original manuscript did cover more on habitat and plants. In fact there was a whole chapter on mangroves, where to find them and how to keep them. The publisher felt that the book was getting too big and this was edited out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a very good book. Very informative good pictures may need a few more on the less seen species. Overall Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Brackish book out there
Well written and organized book, great graphics, and loads of information.
Very thorough in listing all the types of brackish fish and their requirements. Worth getting if you are setting up such a tank. Makes the task less challenging.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as ID GUIDE for Brackish Fish
Compared to the Aqualog Brackish fish book which focused a lot on brackish water habitats and chemistry this book focused mostly on various brackish water fish. This book will tell you where the fish are from, what type of water conditions they need, and behavior of the species or the whole genus.

So why buy this? As I said it focuses on different types of brackish water fish (and their salinity requirements) listing a lot more species than any other book I have read. This is why this book is a must have for the brackish water enthusiast who wants to know of species beyond the usual stock most books cover or list as brackish.

I give the book 4 stars because I think there could have been more on brackish habitats and on the plants found in them. THis book does tend to focus on what you are mostly like to find in a petshop but I wish it had told of plants and substrates not found easily but could be found for the persistent hobbyist like myself. ...
