5-0 out of 5 stars perfect cookbook for seafood, lots of simple recipes
I pull out this book whenever I need to refer to how to cook a certain fish.I think it's a great book for anyone new to cooking seafood. The recipes are all fantastic and use simple, natural ingredients. Most Americans could benefit from eating much more fish, and this great cookbook might help them do just that!

1-0 out of 5 stars A dismal disappointment
Very limited coverage---more gloss than substance. If minus ratings were offered I'd use a minus ten unless they had a minus 1000.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the fear out of cooking and selecting seafood
This is a really good book that explains the differences between species of fish: Oily and lean fish, strong and mild, firm and flaky. It gives descriptions on how types of fish will taste and the recommended cooking methods, along with Nutrition Information for the recipes. The recipes themselves are easy to follow and the book is filled with color photographs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point for New Aquarists...
I was very impressed with this book. It covers a lot of information starting from what you need to consider while deciding if you and your family are even ready to add an aquarium to your home. Then it goes on to helpful information like whether you want a fish only or mini reef, costs involved, choosing the right tank, choosing a theme, decorations, live rock, how to set up the tank, how to cycle the tank and which tests to perform, info on some of the most popular fish and how to choose the right ones, how to choose a good dealer and what questions to ask them (and they list the answers you should get to tell if the dealer is good or not), and how to keep your fish healthy. And that's only the things I can think of off the top of my head!!

There's just tons of excellent info and some common sense tips that may not have occurred to you along with helpful charts that you can photocopy and use. Very helpful and worded in a way that was very easy for a beginner like myself to understand. Definitely invest in this one if you're just starting out. You won't regret it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Better than no book, but in dire need of revision
This book is a better guide to fish identification than to fishing methods.Still, identifying certain fish is a challenge due to mismatched descriptions and illustrations. Under the Mediterranean spearfish, you findthe right description but a photo of a gar. Under Atlantic sailfish, youfind a photo of a juvenile fish recognizable only to marine biologists.Ortry identifying a wahoo from the dim and distant silhouette provided. Discussions and illustrations of tackle are also full of errors: a flyinggaff is pictured without its quick-release handle, and outriggers aredescribed as "often fitted but seldom used," whereas the photo onp. 58 shows outriggers in use but describes them as "rod-holdersdirected outward."Better than no book at all, but in dire need ofrevision.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was great it told alot to fishermen
This book is great. It is very good for the beginer fishermen. It shows alot of fish people should know about. If your a fishermen you will want this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOOK HAS A LOT OF INTERESTING FEATURES
THE BOOK IS VERY WELL WRITTEN.IT GIVES A LOT OF VALUABLE INFO ON HOW TOO USE PROPER TERMINAL GEAR AND TROLLING TACTICS. IT COVERS A LOT OF DIFFERENT TACTICS FOR DIFFERENT SPIECES OF FISH. THE PICTURES OF THE DIFFERENT FISHARE SUPERB. I WOULD RECCOMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANY AVID FISHERMAN.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for novice, bad for salted fishermen
If you go to the bookstore and flip through the pages quickly, you willfind a lot of illustrations and interesting fishing words. Once you buy andread it at home, you reallize this book is the 'feature' type not for you.At least not for me and all my fishing buddies. ... Read more

Product Description

The name “Curcione” is synonymous with professional saltwater fly fishing. Through the salt scene of the 1980s and 1990s, Nick Curcione developed and wrote about flies and methods that changed the way people fished inshore and off shore. Curcione shared the water with many of the great veteran fly rodders of his time, and that collected experience and knowledge enrich this book. The coastal angler who chases striped bass, albacore and various tunas, sea trout, yellowtail, tarpon, and many other species will find all the guidance he needs in these chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info on Saltwater
This book has good coverage of basic saltwater information, basic fly fishing in general and some decent coverage of the various species of fish.If you need education on any of these topics it might be worth acquiring.

I am know a fair amount about saltwater areas and the fish species, so the book did not help me there. There are better fly fishing education books out there, so if that is your primary purpose for acquiring it look elsewhere.

All in all, for me it was a waste of money ... Read more

If you are just starting out with this wonderful hobby this is the book for you. It gives the reader detailed steps in how to tie saltwater flies and answers virtually any question a beginner might have. Once you have this book, all you will need is practice, practice, practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saltwater Fly Tying---Wentink
This is a book for beginning fly tiers and having never tied a fly of any kind before this is one time where I feel VERY qualified to provide a review.I am going bonefishing and needed to tie some "Crazy Charlie" flies.I purchased 4 other books on tying flies for salt water, but this was the only one that provided detailed, step by step instructions for a BEGINNER.The others have material lists and pictures but no detailed instruction.I have only one wish, and that is that Mr. Wentink would up date a new printing with new materials and flies that have developed since 1991.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent inroduction to saltwater fly tying
This is an excellent intorductory book on saltwater fly tying. It doesnot provide the great numbers of patterns an experienced tier might belooking for.Instead it goes into detail on the steps the processes forabout 10 patterns of flies. It will walk a beginner step by step throughfly construction. The techniques used for these patterns will prepare thenovice for other types. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice keys, but some poor photos
I really like the keys to help identify out fish by spines, etc, but some of the photos are not good representations of the fish. I am glad I bought the book, but I supplement it with other "picture books"

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This is an excellent text for the professional (or near professional) to use in identification of fishes in the Gulf.It is NOT for the beginner, and if you are a beginner you will be disappointed due to the technical layout and terms in this book.Additionally, I think the artistic illustrations by Dinah Bowman are FANTASTIC, but of course I am slightly biased because she is my mother. :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Fish Identification
The book is written for college study, however, the pictures are of less than good quality. Many of the fish were dead for quite awhile before photographed. This isn't the best source if you're looking for a book to help you identify fish of the Gulf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners, but good
Good for biologists and wanna be/soon to be biologist. Has useful fish species keys, pretty good key to families too, decent descriptions & definitions. Pictures of some species leaves something to be desired (especially some of the sharks, which turn out to be fish mounted on walls). Doesn't coverjuvenile differences well, but most people are looking at adults anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars South Texas
Good text book for classifing any fish found in the Gulf of Mexico by families, but not a quick picture reference book for identifying your catch. ... If the pictures had been better in "Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico". I would have given it a five stars rateing. ... Read more

Product Description
Fifteen years in the making, this updated edition raises the high standard of Bigelow and Schroeder's 1953 reference by drawing from a much larger base of information. Thirty-eight experts in fisheries biology and ichthyology clearly distill the enormous amount of knowledge gained during the past fifty years, including distribution figures from thirty years of annual trawl surveys; food habits accounts from surveys of the stomach contents of more than 30,000 fishes; and egg distribution data from a survey exceeding 10,000 samples. The contributors update Bigelow & Schroeder's 1953 material while presenting a wealth of new information, including thirty-three additional species accounts. By adding 50 percent more material and focusing the volume on data, the editors address the needs of today's biologists and commercial fishers, and ensure that Bigelow and Schroeder's Fishes of the Gulf of Maine, Third Edition will become the standard work in the field for the next fifty years. ... Product Description
Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER IIISHARKS AND 1(AYSThe precise relationship of the Sharks and Rays now living is not by any means so clear as some writers pretend, and one of the most recent of these has more cautiously admitted a doubt whether the two groups are even descended from a single palaeozoic ancestor. The most ancient form in our seas would seem to be the six-gilled shark (Notidanus), and, with the exception of their having reduced their gill-openings by one, it cannot be said that the rest have materially departed from the type of this shark, beyond of course such specialising as might from time to time be demanded by their surroundings and mode of life. In following the usual course and treating of the Sharks and Rays under one head, this chapter merely avoids a somewhat more modern classification, in which the spur-dog (Acanthias) would be regarded as the transitional link rather than the shark-ray (Rhina)y because it could not well be explained without digressing in the direction of comparative anatomy quite beyond the scope of the present volume. For practical purposes it seems more satisfactory to retain the older arrangement followed by Couch and Day, with the Sharks and Rays abruptly subdivided, while at the same time bearing in mind that the study of embryological and other affinities has lately necessitated a revision of their scheme. There is a deep-rooted conviction in circles otherwise" Bashford Dean, Fishes, Living and Fossil, p. 88. well informed that " true" sharks, whatever the qualification may signify, are met with only in tropical seas, and are consequently absent from our own. While, beyond a doubt, both the sharks and rays find their highest development in the warmer seas of the globe, where their scavenging work is in greatest demand, it is also a fact... ... Read more
