4-0 out of 5 stars Flower Dreams
I'm enjoying this book at the tail end of winter with visions of lush gardens all over the yard. There's plenty here to please the new or the experienced gardener. Within you'll find garden design ideas and a chapter about choosing and growing perennials. I especially like the chart that shows the bloom time of perennials so that one can plan to have blooms during spring, summer, and fall.

The plant gallery lists plants alphabetically by Latin names, and highlights hardiness zones, light requirements, size and features. Photos show the reader how the plant may look in his or her garden.

Some books indicate which plants are deer resistant with pictogram symbols. This book doesn't. Instead one has to read the accompanying text in its entirety to see if a particular flower is a deer favorite. The authors probably omit this feature because in a beginning chapter it's stated that deer will eat anything if they are hungry enough. I know from experience they like hosta, lilies, and especially tulips. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Flower Gardening 1-2-3
I bought this book for my son who is a landscaperThis gives him helpful information for his business. He can look up what type of plant will go with the clients landscape and also is used as a good reference guide. The price was very good too and I saved on time and money by saving on gas driving from bookstore to bookstore to find the perfect book and time by looking at the books content in the comfort of my home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gardening Book by far for me.
Best Gardening Book by far for me.

This is, hands-down, the best Gardening Book I've come across. At least for me.I am an amateur Weekend Gardener. The Book is very well written, easy to understand, thorough, and both skillfully organized & illustrated. It has an amazing amount of useful information in just 256 pages.I tried to buy a copy at my local Home Depot, but they were out.Now I know why.

This is the Book I've been looking for, but bought others before finding it.I bought the "Better Homes & Gardens New Complete Guide to Landscaping" which is also good and, in some ways, more comprehensive. But I strongly prefer "1-2-3".It became my "Bible" virtually instantly.

I previously also "stretched" and bought "Taylor's Guide: Encyclopedia of Garden Plants"It has lots more Plants & varieties -- and some very long explanations.Yet, they could take valuable lessons from the Folks at Home Depot in how to "present" the information in their Encyclopedia.I'd buy a copy of an expanded "1-2-3" version in an instant, where I'd leave Taylor's to the true Experts -- as it is intended.

Another Reviewer calls 1-2-3 "A first-rate reference for flower gardening." (March 22, 2002).I enthusiastically agree. However, my one wish is for Home Depot to expand both the Flower Encyclopedia and the Index Sections (giving Taylor's something to shoot at).I know I'd buy a "1-2-3" version if I had a chance.Well done Home Depot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have tried several books on flower design, and this is one of the best.Very understandable, easy to follow and clear.I am a beginner and it has helped me tremendously.Bought it toghether with "A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design" by Alisa de Jong, and am very happy with both books, they complement each other well. The pictures are wonderful and they help to get your imagination going.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dated content, not fresh and exciting
I ended up returning this book because the content was dated and not relevant to today's arrangements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
As an art minor, I dabble in flower arranging but would possible consider doing this when I retire from teaching. This book really provides so much information. It is a complete source of information.I recommend it for anyone with any interest along these lines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information, big book
This is a great book for anyone interested in floral design. It is thorough and is appropriate for beginners and professionals alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars best flower arranging book
I am a flower-arranging novice and this book was recommended to me by someone who has run (for a couple of decades) one of the many NAFAS branches dedicated to flower arranging, after I complained that all the flower books from my library basically just had many pretty pictures that didn't really support me in creating good arrangements for myself, based on bunches I could get at the supermarket. I wanted a flower arranging book with principles and theories, a really good teaching book.

I was more than impressed with this one: over two dozen classic and modern design principles for bigger arrangements plus easy-to-follow smaller ideas, examples of show-work, equipment and techniques, how to condition the plant material (vital if you want your arrangement to continue looking good for more than a couple of days), and much more. If you only want one book on flower arranging, this is it. For a collection, this is a must-add or a wonderful starting point.

This book is truly a beautiful book!

Great book nonetheless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for northern perennial lovers
This book is definitely a favorite of mine in making my garden plans. The authors use their own Ontario perennial garden to illustrate and guide the reader through the planning and seasonal chores involved in a perennial garden.Although their garden style is more formal than mine, they cover choosing, planting and care of perennials in a way that is easily applied in my more casual cottage gardens. Each month has detailed cultivation and care information for many varieties that will bloom at that time, helping with the daunting task of planning so that a garden has continued bloom throughout the growing season.Attention to garden "bones," the structure that holds the garden, is demonstrated in their snow-covered garden photos.Even barren of life and buried in snow, their gardens are interesting to look at, giving us hope that we too can have lovely gardens year round.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pertinent, easy to read, entertaining, informative.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste for everyone
Firstly, the smug "you get what you pay for" crowd can go sip tea with your pinkies out. I understand that this is a free version of a book, converted by volunteers, but that doesn't mean it HAS to be inferior to what it COULD be. If you believe your volunteer work can be substandard just because you're donating your time, maybe you should stick with paid work.

The "community of volunteers" that "converted (this book) from its physical edition to the digital format" not only wasted their time by producing the Kindle version of this book, they have managed to waste the time of everyone who bothers to download this version. It is beyond me why anyone thinks it's worthwhile to publish only the text of a book that relies heavily on illustrations or photographs.Rather than continue to post these idiotic, frustrating versions of "FREE" illustrated books (minus the pictures) for the Kindle, it would be much better for Amazon to simply post a page that says, "Don't bother downloading this if you would like to see the images described by the text."

If you're interested, you can find the illustrations from this book in the HTLM .zip at Project Gutenberg. While I appreciate the efforts of the "community of volunteers", I wish they would quit posting books for the Kindle until it has been properly and fully converted -- including images -- in the form the author intended.

I can't help but wonder how much Amazon has to do with publishing, or at least not discouraging, Kindle books like this (with necessary images not included.) They love to shout about the availability of "free books" in their Kindle ads, and allowing junk like this definitely adds to the number of free books.

5-0 out of 5 stars New transplant to South says this book is HOT, HOT, HOT!
This is a very helpful book with a wealth of information and beautiful color photographs of flowering plants.Being new to the South and unable to recognize many plants and certainly not knowing what would thrive in this climate, I am finding this book to be a very good resource.Common and botanical names of plants are given, which is helpful. Some books only give botanical names. Some books give illustrations of plants rather than full color pictures that are in this book.Black and white illustrations in other books are not very helpful in recognizing plants. This is not the largest reference book for Southern gardeners that I have purchased, but one that is extremely helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good plant guide for the extreme Southeast
This little book is a great guide for gardeners in zones 8 and 9 and even the more temperate regions of zone 7. Chapters are divided by Ornamental Grasses, Annual Vines, Small Shrubs, Small to Medium Shrubs, Medium to Large Shrubs, and Large Shrubs and Small Patio Trees. Each chapter profiles several plants that thrive in the hot and humid regions of the south. The plant profiles are very good and detailed and provide excellent descriptions as well as sound horiticultural advice. Each plant is illustrated with one or more color photos. Also very helpful is a chart covering the various sizes and characteristics of crepe mrytles. The last section of the book lists plants by various characteristics, such as light requirements, soil types, fragrance, color, etc. This is a good book for gardeners looking to experiment with unique and exciting plants and also very good for the transplanted gardener who has just moved to the southeast. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK
On Martha Stewart's show Feldman Gross talks about how she shows you how she to disect flower in some Japanese way to be able to press them better. She promises many tips on how to press flowers. In fact there isn't tip one in this book.So if you want an expensive book to lie on your coffe table, you might want this. But that's all it is good for.NO TIPS on pressing flowers in this rip off.
Book Trader Cafe that I bought it through is a good place. The book it's self was in great shape. It's Gross that mislead what it was about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Afterlife of Flowers
Good reference material and some philosophy about nature. Beautiful photographs show what some commonly found flowers look like when pressed. This book is includes enlarged photos, comments, and a chart with smaller photos showing each flower's common name, width and it's location in the book. 96 pages, hardcover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Superb!
This isn't a how-to book, but the gorgeous photos do serve as a valuable guide to what some commonly found flowers will look like when pressed. Thebook is comprised of enlarged photos and comments, ending with an id chart of smaller photos along with each flower's common name, actual width, and the page it was featured on.

If you like the look of pressed flowers, you might want to check out Laura Martin's Art and Craft of Pounding Flowers. Pounding an object's pigment onto fabric and paper creates beautiful and uniquely pressed flower like images. Very nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flower Nirvana
Janie Feldman Gross takes the art of flower pressing to new dimensions. Each specimen is a work of art unto itself - the colors, textures, delicately graceful lines - coupled with Janie's poetic observations, all add up to a book that is both breathtakingly beautiful and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing Hidden Beauty in Flowers
For most, the term "pressed flowers" conjures the shriveled and crumbling remains of faded prom corsages.Nothing could be more strikingly different from the pressed flora you'll encounter in THE AFTERLIFE OFFLOWERS.Creator Janie Feldman Gross invites us to a world where flowersreveal their remarkable and astonishing beauty...long after bloom.Sheguides us through a breathtaking collection of specimens -- most grown inher own garden -- each transformed by weight and time.Bringing herartist's eye to the task, Gross combines spectacular photographic imageswith her own spare and carefully placed commentary. The result is a visualballet -- flowers partnered by prose. This is a book to be enjoyed for ituniqueness, its visual aesthetic and its underlying message; if we arepatient and take the time to observe the world around us, there isunexpected beauty therein. ... Product Description
Perhaps the most uncommon color among plants, blue echoes the sky and adds a welcome accent to any garden. Greatly sought after by plant breeders, blues from pale lavender to powder blue add depth and tranquility to the gardener’s palette.

Noting that blue flowers are more common in high-altitude meadows and stream beds, the author suggests that this may account for their popularity in the cool gardens of northern Europe. Their rarity in warmer climates such as the southeastern United States is not inevitable, however, as there are suitable choices for every climate in the hundreds of blue-flowered plants available. This helpful survey is illustrated with more than 150 color photos of blue flowers from gardens around the world, making it both a practical and an inspirational book for gardeners everywhere. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars a book of 'blue' flowers?I think not...
Let me first say that I have the hard-back edition of this book, so if it has been amended in this paperback edition, please disregard this.
To be fair, the content of this book is not bad per se.It does have useful & relavant information about all of the species it covers. However, I must give it a poor review based soley on its title: Practically every photograph in this book is of a purple flower. There are only a handful that I would even generously call blue. What's worse is that several of the species, such as Delphinium where I know there are pure blue varieties, are depicted with purple varieties.I can think of several pure blue flowers in the world that are not even mentioned in this book. So, if you purchase this book, prepare to be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with details gardeners will appreciate

Product Description
Gardening on Pavement, Tables, and Hard Surfaces is the first book to describe how to grow garden plants directly on hard surfaces such as pavement, rocks, tables, and other impermeable platforms. George Schenk translates this small miracle into practical language for gardeners. With just a few inches of soil, gardens can be created almost anywhere. Tabletops can serve as the foundation for small rock gardens; ground covers can grow vigorously on concrete; even bonsai can thrive directly on decorative stone. Using extensive photos, plant lists, and step-by-step instructions, the author shows how every gardener can adopt this charming, vibrant, and beautiful style of planting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gardening on Pavement, Tables, and Hard Surfaces
Inspirational and unusal book showing ways to maximize the beauty of areas that might otherwise remain a blight on the landscape.Covering pavement, enhancing stumps, and dressing up rocks are all possible with the guidance of this clever gardener whose writing is also excellent.I've purchased extras to give as gifts and gave one to my landscaper who has tirelessly and artfully moved rocks all over my new North Carolina landscape to great effect! You will love this book if you love to do unusual things in your garden!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusual "take" on gardening
This is an extremely interesting "take" on gardening. It had never occurred to me to plant directly on pavement, but this book convinced me I should try it. I did, and with spectacular results. I now have flowers growing in the middle of my driveway in a strip of dirt that's about 10' x 2' x 4-8" high. It looks much more natural than a traditional raised bed, and, amazingly, the dirt has stayed put without benefit of artificial barriers, just a few judiciously placed rocks. I also now have flowers growing out of a rotting stump. This book opened to me a whole new world of possibilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AS BEAUTIFUL TO READ AS THE BLOOM ARE TO SEE
This is a delight for flower gardeners, and especially those who like to sit outside and read among the flowers. Now, without a lot of over-the-head scientific language, you can get the fun of flowers, and enjoy the reading and the flowers together. It's not the definitive book for the scientifically serious grower, but one of the best for the backyard gardener. You'll find the book as fun as your flowers. Reading about flowers is better than weeding them.

I found this book AFTER reading Diana Wells newer book, "Lives of the Trees: An Uncommon History". That book does to trees that 100 Flowers does to blooms. Each chapter (go ahead look at the list inside on this listing) offers information, a drawing and fun facts about the flower while not bogging the reader down with more than 2 or 3 pages. If you need more, there are other book. This book offers a FUN first look at what kinds of flowers may be growing in your backyard, and what you might want to add. The same treatment exists in Wells' book about trees and a third one, "100 Birds and How They Got Their Name." I give them all 5-stars for FUN reading. Take them outside in nature, the perfect place to read them.

These books are perfect for homeschool students and others doing basic research on trees, flowers, and birds. I'm sorry I passed age 60 before I found them, but they would be a delight to other retired nature lovers. Simple, fun reading that can be taken in in short bursts. I gained new bits of knowledge with every chapter, in every one of the 3 books.

I'm glad I ordered them all. I'd suggest the same for you.

This little but informative book was a hit for my mom-in-law.She thought she knew all about flowers, but no.She was amazed at all the facts in this book.A real nice present for flower lovers.!!

3-0 out of 5 stars 100 Flowers book
I was a little dissapointed with this book. It was a lot smaller in size than I was expecting, and the illustrations are just black and white outlines, not color photos of each flower like I was expecting. They should call it "How 100 flowers got their names" instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift
100 Flowers is more of a small coffee table book than a garden guide. It's sweet and interesting. It would be a perfect gift for mother's day, the lady who babysits the cat, your nicest neighbor. I would be interested in other things the author has done or seeing her on Martha. ... Read more
