Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses.

Product Description
100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs for Flute by Andrew D. Gordonconsists of, as the title suggests, 100 Jazz riffs based on commonchord progressions used in jazz such as the II-V-I, III-VI-II-Vetc. in both major and minor keys. There are five separate sections:Jazz Swing, Jazz Ballad, Jazz Funk, Jazz Waltz and Latin Jazz. Eachmusical example has a single note improvised melody line with thechord progression At the end of the book there is the chordprogression for the popular jazz standard "Blue Moon" showing you howto use various examples from the 100 riffs to create an improvisedsolo over the chord progression. By demonstrating this technique youcan pick most jazz standards and create your own improvisational ideasusing the book. The CD is recorded with the flute playing the melodyline along with a rhythm section of piano bass and drums. All theexamples are recorded with the flute and the rhythm section, as wellas the rhythm section without the flute and with the more difficultexamples the rhythm section is recorded at a slowed down tempo. Anabsolute must for musicians learning and playing various jazz styles. ... Read more

Product Description
With this book/CD package you'll learn melodies and practice soloing on 12 of the most popular and important chord progressions in the swing and jazz repertoire - cycle of fifths; major and minor progressions with II-V-I, I-VI-II-V-I, I-III-VI-II-V chord changes; major, minor, and 6/8 blues; and much more-- all based on favorite swing and jazz hits. Play along with a hot string rhythm section: featuring guitar, mandolin and bass with lead melodies played on tenor sax. Each melody appears in standard notation for C instruments, guitar tablature, and mandolin tablature. The recording features all of the tunes at slow and regular speeds. Melodies to the tunes are recorded at about one-half speed with only guitar accompaniment before each track with the full band. Instruments are isolated for maximum flexibility. By adjusting the balance control on your stereo you can hear 1) the full band; 2) guitar and bass only (you play the lead melody from the book); or 3) mandolin, melody, and bass only (you play rhythm). ... Excerpt: A kantele (pronounced in Finnish) or kannel ( in Estonian) is a traditional plucked string instrument of the zither family native to Finland, Estonia, and Karelia. It is related to the Russian gusli, the Latvian kokle and the Lithuanian kankls. Together these instruments make up the family known as Baltic psalteries. The oldest forms of kantele have 5 or 6 horsehair strings and a wooden body carved from one piece; more modern instruments have metal strings and often a body made from several pieces. Modern concert kanteles can have up to 40 strings. Modern instruments with 15 or fewer strings are generally more closely modelled on traditional shapes than the concert kantele, and form a separate category of instrument known as small kantele. The playing positions of concert kantele and small kantele are reversed; i.e., to the player of a small kantele the wide'est low pitched strings are farthest away from his body, whilst to a concert kantele this side of the instrument is nearest, and the short high pitched strings farthest away. The instruments have different though related repertoires. Robert Stigell's Väinämöinen (1888) decorating the Vanha Ylioppilastalo (Old Studenthouse) in Helsinki holds humankind's first kantele made of the giant pike's jawbone as told in Kalevala. The kantele has a distinctive bell-like sound. The Finnish kantele generally has a diatonic tuning though small kantele with between 5 and 15 strings are often tuned to a gapped mode missing a seventh and with the lowest pitched strings tuned to a fourth below the tonic as a drone. The Estonian kannel has a variety of traditional tunings. Concert versions have a switch mechanism (similar to s...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17035 ... Read more

Chapters: Inuit Musical Instruments, Native American Flute, Eagle Bone Whistle, Tautirut, Water Drum, Apache Fiddle, Qilaut, Kelutviaq, Yakatat. Excerpt: The Native American flute has achieved some measure of fame for its distinctive sound, used in a variety of New Age and world music recordings. The instrument was originally very personal; its music was played without accompaniment in courtship, healing, meditation, and spiritual rituals. Now it is played solo, along with other instruments or vocals, or with backing tracks both in Native American music and in other styles. There are two different types of Native American flute, the plains flute and the woodlands flute, each with slightly different construction. A busker in New York City's Broadway-Lafayette subway station playing a Native American flute. There are many stories about how different peoples discovered the flute. A common character in these stories is the woodpecker, who put holes in hollow branches while searching for termites. The wind would blow around these branches, creating sounds that the people noticed and sought to recreate. The actual development of the flute most likely did not follow this pattern. The theory that it was developed by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples based on Mesoamerican designs is the most common solution. The late 1960s saw a roots revival centered around the flute, with a new wave of flutists and artisans like Doc Tate Nevaquaya and Carl Running Deer. Of special importance is R. Carlos Nakai (Changes, 1983), who has achieved some mainstream renown for his mixture of the flute with New Age and ambient sounds. Mary Youngblood is the only Native American flautist to win two Grammy awards, although several others have been noted as Grammy nominees. Notable and award ...
