Product Description
Football in 1903 was vastly different from the slick spectacle we watch every Sunday afternoon on TV in the fall. It was a brutal, nonstop war fought by young men and boys on muddy high school and college fields across America. Bloody faces, broken bones, concussions and the shockingly high risk of death were the main attraction for hometown fans. The level of violence nearly got the sport banned in 1902, were it not for the intervention of President Teddy Roosevelt.

In a well-researched true story, we learn how Coach Clayton Teetzel introduces the modern concepts of speed, intelligence and strategy to this brawlers’ game, and also instills character in his players. Creatively told in the voice of Fletcher Van Horn, the unlikely quarterback of his high-school football team, this inspiring story depicts the down-and-dirty details of how early football was played. At the same time, the culture of small-town life in turn-of-the-century America is displayed with unabashed honesty-the hopes, dreams and harsh realities of a community who pulled together while rooting for their team.

The story of how an undersized high school sophomore leads his team to victory is a classic tale of overcoming adversity and the triumph of the underdog. It is also a unique and masterfully told account of a time and a game few know-with tremendous appeal to both sports fans and history buffs. As Friday Night Lights did for modern high-school football, The Way We Played the Game establishes itself as the classic account of football’s crude beginnings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for all ages, especially if you like football and/or history!
I first heard this book read on National Public Radio's "Radio Reader" program. I was enthralled with the history of high school football. I've since given a copy to my 14 year old son, 45 year old brother in-law, and 80 year old aunt, and ALL have greatly enjoyed the book!! The descriptions of the game as told by the quarterback are vivid...one hangs on every word rooting for the home team. It was great to read of teams in familiar places like Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Ann Arbor, as well as the intimidation felt towards the U.P. powerhouse teams (they were a bunch of miners' sons!) from Ishpeming and Escanaba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting, authentic read
This is a beautifully written, exciting football story with well-researched background of the town, the state, and the 1903 period.(I graduated from the High School featured in the book.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, I can't put it down
This is an excellent book for all ages. John Armstrong pulls you right in to a classic story about the 1902 Benton Harbor football team as they struggle through every dangerous, harsh game after another. This book is an excellent gift for football fans and even people who just share our passion and the love of the game. Football fan or not, this is an excellent novel and an excellent piece of culture. After you read this book, the games will never end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read
This book is fantastic, especially for someone who understands football. It is technical regarding football, but the story, which is true, develops beautifully.I couldn't put this book down, and I absolutely fell in love with the characters.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves great books and great football. ... The media increasingly refers to football clubs as brands. Certainly concepts such as loyalty, affiliation, emotional ties with football clubs seem to parallel the relationship between consumer and brand in the broader marketing sphere. This book delves deep into the world of the lucrative business of sports branding.

Excerpt: The Seoul Olympic Stadium (Jamsil, formerly romanised as Chamshil) in Seoul, South Korea, was the main stadium built for the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 10th Asian Games. It is currently the centrepiece of the Jamsil Sports Complex in the Songpa-gu District, in the southeast of the city south of the Han River. The stadium was designed by Kim Swoo Geun. The lines of the stadium's profile imitate the elegant curves of a Korean Joseon Dynasty porcelain vase. Spectator seats are distributed on two tiers, with the entire structure covered by a retractable roof added after the Olympics. Initially built with a capacity of approximately 100,000, today it seats 69,841. Prior to its construction, Seoul's largest venues were Dongdaemun Stadium and Hyochang Stadium. Seating 30,000 and 20,000 respectively, they were too small to attract world-class sporting events. Construction on the new stadium began in 1977 with the aim of staging the Asian Games in 1986. However, when Seoul was awarded the Games of the XXIV Olympiad in September 1981, this stadium became the centrepiece. The stadium opened on September 29, 1984, and served as the site for the 10th Asian Games two years later, then the Olympics in 1988. However, it was not used to stage a major world event since then. It is currently used as the home stadium of Seoul United FC in the K3 League The events hosted by the stadium...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2221253 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (Basketball Federation of the Philippines) or the SBP is the national sport association for basketball in the Philippines, formed from the merging of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) and Pilipinas Basketball (PB). It was formed in order to fix a long running feud in Philippine basketball that resulted in FIBA suspending the country from participating in FIBA-sanctioned events. Both groups signed a joint communique during the FIBA Congress in Saitama, Japan in September 2006. Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, and owner of the PBA's Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters was named as the first president of the organization on February 5, 2007. In 2005, the BAP-formed Cebuana-Lhuillier Philippine National Team, made up of little-known amateur players, lost to the Parañaque Jets, owned by city Vice Mayor and comedian Anjo Yllana in the 2005 National Basketball Conference preseason tournament. The Jets were bannered by actors and showbiz personalities, while the BAP team was supposed to have been sent to represent the country in an international tournament. This led to calls from Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose "Peping" Cojuangco to reform the BAP's programs and send a national team made up of professional players from the Philippine Basketball Association. However, disagree...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7350064 ... Read more

It is one of the weakest teams in the world, and holds the dubious distinction of suffering the largest loss in international football history, having been defeated by Australia 310 on April 11, 2001. American Samoa's weakness is due to both its small population and the popularity of American football, baseball and basketball. American Samoa has never won a FIFA-sanctioned match. 5-0 out of 5 stars Flo Jo and the Funny Suits
(3 elementary students: ...): It's a very interesting book. It tells about Flo Jo's one-legged suits and her unique personal style. It inspires people never to give up on something you love a lot. There were times when Flo Jo was worried she wouldn't be able to compete, but somehow she perservered through the difficult times. In this book you will find out that Flo Jo made many new world records in running. (We don't understand how she could sign autographs with her six-inch long fingernails!!) Flo Jo wasn't allowed to run in the hand off relay because her fingernails were too long. In the end, the the coacheslet her keep them (the second time). We would recommend this book for people who are looking for a good biography and love running. We think the reading level for this book is appropriate for grades 3 and up, or as a Read Aloud for grades 2 and up. ... Read more
