Product Description
Designed as an introduction and overview to the field, Cyber Forensics: A Field Manual for Collecting, Examining, and Preserving Evidence of Computer Crimes, Second Edition integrates theory and practice to present the policies, procedures, methodologies, and legal ramifications and implications of a cyber forensic investigation. The authors guide you step-by-step through the basics of investigation and introduce the tools and procedures required to legally seize and forensically evaluate a suspect machine.

Updating and expanding information on concealment techniques, new technologies, hardware, software, and relevant new legislation, this second edition delineates the scope and goals of cyber forensics to reveal and track legal and illegal activity. Beginning with an introduction and definition of cyber forensics, chapters explain the rules of evidence and chain of custody in maintaining legally valid electronic evidence. They describe how to begin an investigation and employ investigative methodology, as well as establish standard operating procedures for the field and cyber forensic laboratory. The authors provide an in depth examination of the manipulation of technology to conceal illegal activities and the use of cyber forensics to uncover them. They discuss topics and issues such as conducting a cyber forensic investigation within both the local and federal legal framework, and evaluating the current data security and integrity exposure of multifunctional devices.

Cyber Forensics includes details and tips on taking control of a suspect computer or PDA and its "operating" environment, mitigating potential exposures and risks to chain of custody, and establishing and following a flowchart for the seizure of electronic evidence. An extensive list of appendices include websites, organizations, pertinent legislation, further readings, best practice recommendations, more information on hardware and software, and a recap of the federal rules of civil procedure. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive collection of relevant information
Cyber forensics is becoming a very interesting niche. and to keep up with Joe the bad guy or Jill the bad girl, one must keep up with technology, understand the reason why, and learn the optimum way on how capture the relevant data after a suspicious activity compromises a business, entity or data; This book is a very good resource to do just that.
This is not a "for Dummies" or "introduction to" book, The author made sure the reader is aware of this in his Foreword "This text will not make you a cyber forensics investigator or technician, if you are not one already!"
Reason I read this book was to use it as a tool to improve the procedures in my company's lab and understand the legal requirement as I collect evidence. I must say that Cyber Forensic 2nd Edition fulfilled that and more. I specially liked the immediate dive into the heart of what is important, from the definition, processes, legal issues to separation of audit from Cyber Forensics Investigations and this is the first chapter. It only gets better; I found Chapter 6 specially helpful, used most of its content and created a template to baseline the readiness of my company's Lab to "American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board".
Although I agree with the author about EnCase's ridiculous pricing practice, I found the software review to be false. Encase does support the collection of enterprise network devices albeit uses an agent to do so. I suggest that Chapter 2 be revised, I also did not like the Author's "evaluation" of different tools and rating them, this fact almost stopped me from reading the rest of the book, I also had issues with chapter 7, I suggest the 3rd edition of this book consider adding network acquisition of forensic evidence in the flowchart, also adding the legal and HR in the process flow(for corporate users) and change calling the roll or the term IT Security officers to Information Security officers (smart companies are separating Infosec from IT). Also in the same chapter I agree with the Incident response team to eradicate Virus infection but the entire process should have been modeled after the NIST SP800-61 or a similar Document, the author did a best effort but not a good one.
In conclusion, I like this book, including most of its useful Appendices.
Best Fishes and thank you for reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars DONT BUY THIS 1ST (2002) EDITION!THERE IS A 2ND (2007) EDITION!
I didn't want to influence the overall rating of the book, so I gave it 3 stars. Can't give 2 1/2.

THIS IS THE 1ST EDITION PUBLISHED IN 2002!!!!!!THERE IS A NEW VERSION (PUBLISHED DECEMBER 2007) AVAILABLE!!!

I have notified Amazon of this and I am sure they will address it as soon as they can. However, I didn't want someone else to buy it and receive a different edition than what they expected. If you do want the 1st edition then go ahead and order away. But, if you want the 2nd edition, Amazon does sell it also.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent and repetitive
Although the book presents a wide breath of computer forensics information, it is poorly written.

It repeats the same concepts over and over again, without adding much in the process.
Some sections are just condensed information from other sources.
Some pieces also seem inconsistent.

Lastly, the writing style is hard to follow, making for a boring reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Historically Superb
I was looking for a book that would teach me how to do things.I can find lots of information on the internet, but I wanted techniques collaborated in one book by a professional. What I found was a lot of legal background, and historical background.I am not starting a computer forensics firm, but I do want to be able to track down, if some sort of mishap occurs. This book provides low level information, like dissecting Netscape, and going through and showing you how to track someone's steps through Netscape Navigator.I wanted some more practical knowledge that I could use to fight spammers, or to show me how to deal with intrusions on my system.I was disappointed with this book, but I hope that you won't be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and suitable for the experienced professional
This book is an excellent follow-on book to Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials by Kruse and Heiser, which introduces the fundamentals. This book goes much deeper and is more technical than the Kruse and Heise, therefore the ideal audience is practicing professionals who have prior experience in forensics and a wide range of hardware, software and network knowledge.

Tools and techniques are presented in painstaking detail.I was unable to find a single gap or omission, which speaks highly of the editorial and review process behind this book's 464 pages. While most technical disciplines can dispense with finer details, the nature of forensics is to overlook nothing. If you find the step-by-step thoroughness boring that is an indication that forensics may not be your forte; if you're an experienced professional you'll appreciate the coverage of every technique or use of tools.

While the discussion of tools and techniques will satisfy even the most experienced practitioner, I found the detailed discussion of legal aspects, HR considerations and overall security and incident response processes to be the book's strongest points. This area is what sets forensics experts apart from technicians, and it is here that the book (in my opinion) adds the most value.Procedures ranging from how to properly gather, preserve and control evidence, to legal considerations for designing processes are covered in clear language, as are US and international legal guidelines.

Parts that I especially like include: intrusion management and profiling, up-to-date information on electronic commerce legal issues, the numerous checklists and cited resources, and the clearly delineated process for dealing with incidents.

If you're new to forensics you will probably get more from this book by first reading Computer Forensics: Incident Response Essentials by Kruse and Heiser. If, however, you have previous computer forensics experience or are currently serving in that role this book is probably one of the best investments you can make. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of forensic methodology
This is a 'how to' book:how to secure a crime scene; how to collect fingerprints (and feet, lip, and ear prints); how to identify blood splatter patterns, etc. It's not quite detailed enough to be considered a text book, unless the teacher uses supplementary material, but it is packed full of real-life examples, which is why I read it.

This book is divided into five sections:

"The Scene of the Crime"--some crime scenes are impossible for the first responder to completely protect, e.g. the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City after it had been bombed. For one thing, people had to be rescued from the ruins. Some of the more interesting examples in this book involve the movement of evidence off of the scene, e.g. a bullet that passed through a victim and lodged in a passing bicycle.

I was also interested to discover that many states employ 'civilian' forensic technicians (it's cheaper than paying for another police officer). The swab-wielding cop is slowly fading from the American crime scene.

"Working the Scene: the Evidence"--One of the best prints from a nightmarish crime scene came from a Christmas chocolate.Evidently the murderer didn't like nuts and put the chocolate back into the box, along with a beautiful print of his thumb.

Criminals who stage crime scenes are often the easiest ones to catch. One man murdered three people, then dressed up in a gorilla costume and wrecked the house, just the way he imagined an enraged gorilla would have wrecked it, including a swing from the ceiling fan that ripped it to the floor.

At first, the ident officer, Patricia McGuire was puzzled by the print of a four-inch finger tip. After the murder scene was thoroughly analyzed, it became obvious to her forensic team that it had been staged. They checked with the local costume shop, found out who had recently rented a gorilla suit, and arrested him for murder.

"Working the Scene of the Body Human"-- One of the most surprising items in this section is how little DNA is still extracted and processed from crime scenes.Hopefully, as DNA becomes quicker and easier to process, it will become a major focus of a crime scene. One challenge of processing DNA from a crime scene is that it is so easy to contaminate the surroundings with the forensic team's DNA.

Forensic Odontology is another fascinating tool.Be sure to check out the anecdote of the perp who bit himself in an effort to mislead the police.

"Working the Scene:Different Stages"--A short section covering explosives and computers.Even as DNA can reveal a criminal's physical presence, so his computer can reveal the presence of his shoddy little mind, whether it be through pornographic photographs, bomb making instructions, or internet scams.

"Working the Scene: Different Skills"--Another short section which includes the contributions of K-9 units and forensic photographers.Digital photography has actually made a criminalist's job harder because of the ease by which digital photographs can be altered.

This book's numerous appendices delve into the qualifications needed, and types of jobs that are available to people who are interested in a career in forensics."The Forensic Casebook" is a good overview for future criminal investigators, and could also be considered supplemental reading for TV 'true crime' fans (Hint:Columbo and the various CSI programs really take a beating for their sloppy investigative work).

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book
I read this book for a sixth grade nonfiction reading assignment.

It explains how forensic anthropologists help police solve crimes by studying the bones of victims. It also describes how Dr. Michael Charney of the Forensic Science Laboratory at Colorado State University helped identify bones found at a Boy Scout camp in Missouri in 1988.

I thought the book was very interesting. If you like shows like Law & Order and CSI or if you like to read mysteries, then you might like The Bone Detectives.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
I had the chance to work under Dr. Michael Charney for 5 years before his death.Dr. Charney focused heavily on education and teaching people. That is what this book does. When this book came out he gave me a hard time for buying a copy because it was a "kid's book".All of that aside, the book gives a basic introduction to forensic anthropology on a level that explains it to the reader. It covers the case from start to finish as well as touching on the other aspects of forensic investigation such as forensic entomology and facial reconstruction. So if you have a child that is wanting to learn more about the field or you are looking for a good place to start learning, this is the book to get.

1-0 out of 5 stars "The Bone Detectives" for the interested 11 year old
Okay, this book was so absolutely basic that I could have written it.I was extremely disappointed with how much I didn't learn from this book.It is 45 pages long, so if you're expecting a good, interesting weekend read--this is not it.There weren't any detailed case studies. There weren't any crime scene pictures.Just basic info on fingerprinting and skull re-construction and a little bit of this-and-that.Extremely basic.Recommended for the interested 11 year old, but not for anyone who wants to really learn the nitty-gritty of Forensic Anthropology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for forensic science fans.
If you like anthropology or forensic science you will love this book. It tells of forensic anthropology, along with several other forensic techniques. It also explains about forensic archeology, and how past mysteries are being solved using forensics.

4-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional book for exceptional children
The Bone Detectives is a compelling book for young readers. While the subject matter may seem out-of-the-ordinary and even macabre to many adults, pre-teens and teenagers seem facinated with the science and technology involved in solving murder cases. The book can also serve as a way to open a dialogue about the harsh realities bombarding our children from televison, film, and the evening news.
If you know a bright child with an interest in science or police work, or if you just want to foster an interest, this book is a good start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of 'Partners in Crime' by Erik Hein
Forensic Science for students has become a very hot item. This book, as a part of the growing collection of available materials for teachers, offers an interesting way to approach this topic.
This book is targeted to help middle school teachers, and their students, become familiar with real-world forensic techniques. Some of the topics include toxicology, tool marks, fingerprinting, fiber and hair analysis, and more. What is even more exciting is the unique approach to how students learn. Not only are there suggested hands-on science activities but there is a strong interdisciplinary connection to langauage arts. The author provides a format that encourages students to write while they learn. They build their vocabulary and keep an investigative journal. As an added bonus, the suggested materials list for activities are items that can easily be acquired.Lastly there is a continuing mystery to be solved and each chapter provides another segment towards the solution of that mystery.
All in all, this book is a must have for those who want to learn and teach students from upper elementary to high school. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, technically outdated
The book gives a good overview about forensic photography. The location strategy, what images you have to take.
But the technical part, especially digital photography and photogrammetry are completely outdated. To me these parts looked like 10 to 15 years old. There is significant room for improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Forensics Book
As a Forensics Photographer, I have nothing but praise for Sandy and this book. It's very well written and covers just about everything someone would need to know to make it in this profession. I highly recommend this book to anyone already in Forensics, or looking to get into it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most thorough Forensic Photography book available! Instant Hit!
The thoroughness begins with the cover, straight and to the point. This is forensics. This is photography. No way to confuse the topic. I've spent years looking for that one (1) book that could teach me Forensic Photography in its entirety. I've now found it. No need to read any of the other books available, and frankly none are with as much focus, direction and knowledge shared as this book by Mr Weiss. His insight into what a student really needs to learn is most impressive! The books approach and style are second to none. The book is written by one man, but it seems like the reader is gaining an entire degree, from many professors with many years of experience. No reason to ever waste money on another book of the same subject. This is well worth the investment and more importantly its' return of investment is already paying off! Thank you to the Author! Thank you Sanford Weiss for penning this book and sharing your wisdom. An instant hit in my opinion!

Author Sanford Weiss is an experienced forensics investigator & photographer with impressive credentials and decades of `on the job' investigatory work as photographer/investigator. He is a prolific writer of technical articles and a recipient of prestigious awards in evidence photography. This book should serve to be a reference and teaching guide for those interested in forensic photography, whether an individual, department or used in a teaching institute. Not available for review at this time is information of the book-specific "Companion Website" with review material, additional photo examples and Supplements which are believed to include Instructor's Manual and PowerPoint and access to color photos!NFD.

"Forensic Photography" was a monumental undertaking for one man, but this strengthens the very substance of a book which is highly technical, divided into subsections for easy reference, and covers the A to Z of the fields of photography and forensics. In 17 chapters the entirety of the field is nicely covered with discussion of photography essentials in forensics; digital & conventional camera types; divers ancillary equipment and lighting methodologies; macro, video, 3-D & underwater imaging techniques; plus the photography of fires, accidents & crime scenes in addition to courtroom testimony.

The author embedded a number of excellent case synopses involving crane, bus, train, truck, car, & airplanes including TWA 800, etc.The text has numerous B/W photographs and referenced diagrams to complement the text. For clarity and consistency a comprehensive glossary of terminologies is provided.Throughout, the theme of fair and accurate representation is stressed - for in forensic photography, photographic charm is meaningless, only the Truth in imaging reigns, and here... beauty IS the truth in imaging. ... Product Description

After 9/11, the forensic epidemiology field emerged as a leading investigative tool, partnering public health officers with law enforcement like never before. Based on the authors’ first-hand experience, Forensic Epidemiology brings to light the vast amounts of information collected by medical examiners that will be useful in advancing death investigation techniques among the science, public health, and law enforcement fields.

This practical resource begins with a brief overview of epidemiological science and the history of forensic epidemiology before examining the multiple functions of death certificates and the signature role of forensic epidemiologist’s in death investigations. Incorporating numerous illustrations and real-world examples, this book:

  • Explains proven methods to collect, analyze, and interpret data for criminal investigations
  • Defines the terminology, methodology, procedures, and goals of all branches involved for more effective collaboration
  • Examines deaths from natural, suicidal, accidental, homicidal, and undetermined causes
  • Describes the various decomposition states and methods used to establish positive identity

The increased frequency of criminal acts that involve deliberate biological and chemical agents underscores the need for collaboration between those in public health and law enforcement investigators. Separately, the public health community and law enforcement agencies have a unique authority that the other does not. However, as Forensic Epidemiology effectively demonstrates, when these agencies work together, they can mount a powerful and successful response to threats on the American public.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great material for Forensic Science
I have been searching for a textbook to use for a future course on Forensic Science and this book fills the bill for a Laboratory Manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lab Manual
I recently purchased the manual to see if it would be suitable for my high school class. I surely wasn't disappointed! I plan to order many more to have my students use. The material was written well, the diagrams and photographs made the material easy to digest and retain for the kids. The important thing, as a teacher, is that it left the kids yearning to go to the next experiment/lesson. Any time the kids want to know what they are doing next, shows me that the material keeps their interest and that's a good thing. I'd previously seen Petraco & Kubic's "Color Atlas & Manual of Microscopy for Criminalists, Chemists & Conservators" and that publication brought me to review this book.

Product Description
This new textbook provides students with the basic principles and practice standards of forensic victimology-the scientific study of victims for the purposes of addressing investigative and forensic issues. It provides case-based coverage with original insights into the role that victimology plays in the justice system, moving beyond the traditional theoretical approaches already available. The purpose of this textbook is to distinguish the investigative and forensic aspects of victim study as a necessary adjunct to the field of victimology. It identifies forensic victimologists in the investigative and forensic communities and provides them with methods and standards of practice needed to be of service.

This book is intended to educate students on the means and rationale for performing victimological assessments with a scientific mindset. Forensic Victimology is designed specifically for teaching the practical aspects of this topic, with "hands on" real-life case examples and an extensive online Instructor's manual featuring summaries, key terms, and test questions for every chapter.

* Applied victimology for students and caseworkers performing objective examinations as opposed to theoretical victimology that studies victim groups and crime statistics.
* First ever textbook detailing a mandate, scope and methods for forensic victimologist practitioners.
* Provides a critical / scientific counterbalance to existing mainstream texts approaching general victimology with a pro-victim bias.
* Written by practitioners of forensic victimology in the investigative, forensic, mental health, and academic communities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for anyone studying criminology or forensics!
Great book on Forensic victimology. Many people underestimate the usefulness of victimology. Definitely worth a read, very reliable for research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente texto para el Investigador Criminal

1-0 out of 5 stars A Sad Day for Victims and Victimology
Victimology is a sub-specialty in forensics that focuses on the victim of a crime or accident etc. There aren't a lot of affordable textbooks on the subject. When I saw this one and read a bit about it. I decided to give it a go. It was mainly the price that did it for me. I'm not particularly a fan of so called "profiler and forensic scientist" Brent Turvey. I was concerned that he was straying a little out of his territory. I've read his work before and am certainly aware that he has an infallible ego. He enjoys taking potshots at his peers and likes to blow his own horn in general. He seems to write on every aspect of forensics known to man. I would call him a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. I came to find out that what he really has no clue on is victimology - but I'll get back to that. Nevertheless, I decided to give him one more chance and was determined to keep an open mind. This mistake was a colossal one for me. Let me explain. I am a student of the forensic sciences/behavioral sciences and they encompass a large portion of my waking hours. Usually I'm reading about it, studying, researching, etc. I was also, at several points in my life, a victim. I was car-jacked, pistol whipped, kidnapped and severely beaten. I have also had two other brushes with death. I am now at the point where I would consider myself a survivor. Mr Turvey would have you believe that I am at fault for my victimization because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time or for any one of a myriad of other reasons.

The book begins with a preface that devotes itself to why and how victims are at fault for their own victimization and that researchers on the subject are just to scared to acknowledge this because it isn't politically correct. While he, on the other hand, is fearlessly going ahead and reporting "The Truth". He lists one anecdotal story after another of people who lie, cheat and take advantage of the system to gain monetary compensation or to have an excuse to shirk their responsibilities. Part of me felt like the stories were simply made up to illustrate his point. After I was finished with the preface, I was shocked. There was no mention of anyone who used the system because they genuinely needed or deserved it. I kept waiting for the other side of the picture, only it never came. No stories of victims who beat the odds, used the system to get back on their feet etc. I was so dumbfounded by this I had to put the book down and walk away. It was the next day when I found myself feeling terribly upset, though I didn't understand why. A friend called and after a half hour of tearful confusion she said, "It sounds like you're being awfully hard on yourself." Suddenly, I realized that after reading Turvey's book, I felt like all the tragedy in my life was all my fault! My friend suggested I burn the book. Now that I had a clearer perspective on things, I wanted to see if the preface was just bad or if now that he'd gotten this out of his system, the book would take an even handed approach. I'm sure by now you can guess how things turned out. Let me summarize: Victims are bad people, Turvey is a brilliant pioneer in the field.

I believe Mr Turvey has spent too much time with hard core criminals. He has transferred that criminal attitude onto victims and the study of victimology. Yes, people lie, cheat, steal and do any number of bad things. This occurs everywhere including with people who have been victimized or claim they have been. This little fact could have been covered in one paragraph. An entire book is just ridiculous. To take an entire group of people and tell them it's their fault for being raped, shot, stabbed, etc. is just simply wrong! I could not and will not read any more of this book. It is filled with what Turvey thinks but no where was I able to find a shred of empirical evidence that substantiated his horrible claims. I say this again with the caveat that I did not read every page of the book. I refuse to. Just because Turvey says it does not make it so and I think he has forgotten this or thinks that people should just believe him.

This book does great injustice to an important field and even more so is a further abuse to people everywhere who have been victimized. ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides the first comprehensive, overview and guide to forensic isotope analysis, an exciting new application of stable isotope analytical techniques.  Topics are introduced using examples and real-life case studies such as food quality control where isotope analysis has already had a major impact, in terms of consumer protection, These examples illustrate the underlying principles of isotope profiling or fingerprinting. A section comprising actual criminal case work is used to build a bridge between the introduction and the technical section to encourage students to engage with this novel departure for analytical sciences while at the same time providing hands-on examples for the experienced researcher and forensic practitioner to match problems and success stories encountered with the topics discussed in the technical section.

What little information is available on the subject in book form so far, has been published as individual chapters in books dealing either with mass spectrometry, forensic geoscience or environmental forensics, this is the first book to focus on the entire spectrum of forensic isotope analysis and will be an invaluable reference to both researchers in the field and forensic practitioners. ...
