Product Description

This book reviews the latest assessments of climate variability and climate change, and their impacts on agriculture and forestry, and recommends appropriate adaptation strategies for reducing the vulnerability of agriculture and forestry to climate variability and climate change. Among other solutions, the text offers management strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from different agroecosystems, and proposes the use of seasonal climate forecasts to reduce climate risk.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Public debate has stimulated interest in finding greater compatibility among forest management regimes. The debate has often portrayed management choices as tradeoffs between biophysical and socioeconomic components of ecosystems. Here we focus on specific management strategies and emphasize broad goals such as biodiversity, wood production and habitat conservation while maintaining other values from forestlands desired by the public. We examine the following proposition: Commodity production (timber, nontimber forest products) and the other forest values (biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat) can be simultaneously produced from the same area in a socially acceptable manner. Based on recent research in the Pacific Northwest, we show there are alternatives for managing forest ecosystems that avoid the divisive arena of 'either-or' choices. Much of the work discussed in this book addresses two aspects of the compatibility issue. First, how are various forest management practices related to an array of associated goods and services? Second, how do different approaches to forest management affect relatively large and complex ecosystems? ... Read more

Product Description
The threats posed by anthropogenic pollution of the environmenthave resulted in animated public debate about forest condition andgrowth. Therefore, research into forest condition and vitality hasbeen one of the key areas in forest ecology during the past twodecades. The basic questions presented have been:

  • What changes are taking place in forests?
  • Why does forestcondition vary, and why do trees appear to be suffering?
  • How canforest condition be maintained?

This report covers forest condition and changes in environmentalfactors on the basis of the latest findings of Finnish research aswell as research results in other countries. The synthesis is based onthe monitoring of forest condition at the national level which startedin 1985 in accordance with the international methodology, and on anumber of long-term special cause-effect and silviculturalstudies. In addition, scientific literature is widely reviewed. ... Read more

Product Description
The `Global Biodiversity Strategy' signed in 1992 in Rio deJaneiro, and the resolutions at the Ministerial Conferences on theProtection of Forests in Europe in Strasbourg, 1990, and Helsinki,1993, commit the signatory states to monitor nationally the state ofbiodiversity and to sustain the characteristic natural variation inthe country. Sustainability and long-term planning are the two termsbest describing the philosophy of traditional forest managementpractices. However, the traditional planning techniques are notprimarily developed to maintain sustainability of biodiversity.
The gap between the international commitments and the practices inforest assessment and management is obvious. This publication presentsexperience in methodology for assessing and monitoring the variationof ecosystems and habitats in relation to biodiversity conservationand for integrating biodiversity in regional planning of forestmanagement and land use. The state of the art in the field of naturalresource assessments with special reference to forest biodiversity isreviewed, progress in integrating data on biodiversity in forestmanagement planning is presented and the information needs regardingbiodiversity conservation and the question to what degree assessmentmethods for forest biodiversity can be simplified for practicalapplications are discussed.
The book is intended for researchers and practitioners in the field offorest and environmental planning and environmental policies. ... Read more

Product Description
Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands. ... Read more

Product Description

Forest resources are an ideal starting point for economic analysis of sustainability. In this book, leading economists discuss key aspects of sustainability and sustainable forest management including complexity, ethical issues, consumer choice theory, intergenerational equity, non-convexities, and multiple equilibria. This systematic critique of neoclassical economic approaches is followed by a companion work, Institutions, Sustainability, and Natural Resources: Institutions for Sustainable Forest Management, Volume 2 in the series.

This work proposes that new economic theory, rather than a new public policy based on old theory, is needed to guide humanity toward sustainability. The book includes the ideas from old as well as new institutional economics, discussed in detail by leading experts in the field. This book follows a companion work, 'Economics, Sustainability, and Natural Resources: Economics of Sustainable Forest Management', volume 1 of the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complexity in sustainability
I believe, this book will provide a stong foundation to a new paradigm of economics focused on sustainability, and therefore would recommend to all those who are working in related areas.

Even though sustainability is used almost everywhere, but this book is
very different from other literature regarding "sustainability".
Sustainability addressed in this book is much broader than mere
inter-generational issues that have been the focus of economics
literature on sustainability or sustainable development. Different
chapters of the book are written by economists from different streams
of economics. It is argued that Sustainable Forest Mmanagement (SFM)
has emerged as a new paradigm of forest management in the past 2
decades, transforming from timber management to ecosystem management,
from sustained timber yield management to SFM, and from forest
management by exclusion to management by inclusion of user groups,
etc. The beginning chapter on "Complexity, Muddling Through, and
Sustainable Forest Management" by David Colander compares the two
parallel lines of economics, one is about efficiency and control,
another one is about complexity and muddling through. Economics of SFM
is in the second category. The whole book follows this line, and
economics of SFM is analysed from different perspectives such as
behavioral economics, maximization of undiscounted utility, multiple
equilibria, and social choice theory. In the Epilogue, Post-Newtonian
Economics and Sustainable Forest Management, the author synthesizes
the 10 chapters in the framework of four sub principles (existence,
relativity, uncertainty and complementarity) of the economics of SFM.
The author proposes and describes the new paradigm of economics as
post-Newtonian economics and compares it with the neoclassical
economics (Newtonian economics). ... Read more

Product Description
This volume comprises eighteen papers, dealing with the application of economics in forest resource management, wood processing industry and the forest products markets. Within these fields, many different subjects are treated, all of them relevant to current discussions of how to use forests and to some extent also other natural resources. Some subjects are treated at the micro- or owner level, others at the macro- or country, or even higher level, implying forest policy aspects. Many different analytical methods are represented, for example, deterministic and stochastic analysis, single- and multi-objective decision making, discounting, simulation, operations research methods, time-series analysis, Data Envelopment Analysis. ... The tropical forests ar irreplaceable - yet they are disappearing at an alarming pace. Despite the information available to us today, efforts to save or even reforest this natural resource face many obstacles and difficulties. One of theses may even be lack of up-to-date information and coordination. Now there is one major source covering all aspects necessary for managing tropical forest resources. Leading specialists take a look at the whole picture: Biology, climatology, forestry, geology, genetics, and other relevant fields. They examine just how an ecologically sound use and management of the tropical forests might be possible. In twenty-eight chapters totalling almost 2000 pages, you will find exact methods and comparative data as well as promising ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
This book provides a good summary of methods and techniques that are available for wildlife studies. It is a good starting point for graduate students and researchers who would like to get a broad overview, but for more details on particular types of analysis, other resources are needed. For someone who has never been exposed to population biology, the expansive breadth of the book may be somewhat overwhelming. ... Read more
