Here is the first volume to examine sulfur in fossil fuels from a geochemical perspective. It begins with six introductory chapters that present an overview of the material, historical background, and summaries of the present state of knowledge. Subsequent chapters cover: case studies of specific sedimentary environments; characterization of sulfur in selected coals and petroleums by various methods and techniques; and the major advances in understanding geochemistry at the molecular level. This important volume fills a significant gap in the technical literature and updates the understanding of the chemical processes in geological environments giving rise to sulfur fossil fuels. ... Product Description
Energy has become America's forgotten crisis. For morethan a decade, Americans have become stridently complacent toward theuse and especially the availability of energy to fuel most aspects ofour economic and recreational lives. Memories of the oil shocks of the1970s have grown very dim. Long lines at gas stations have beenreplaced by people at auto dealers buying gas-guzzling sports-utilityvehicles. The United States now imports more oil (over 50% more) thanit did prior to the first oil crisis in 1973-74. Yet our reliance onfossil fuels has not been tempered by history. The threat of globalwarming from greenhouse gases is real and significant.

Fossil fuels-petroleum, natural gas, and coal-are finite. They willrun out and are not restorable. This obviously carries significantpolitical and environmental implications for our future. However, wedo have alternatives. In Farewell Fossil Fuels: Reviewing America'sEnergy Policy (Perseus Books, June 15, 1999), noted scientist andbusinessman Sidney Borowitz presents a concise, coherent narrative ofthe major sources of energy currently in use throughout the world, andexplains in a cogent, jargon-free manner how these sources of energycan be developed. Borowitz places these nonfossil fuel sources in aneconomic and scientific context so that the case for conservation andgrowth is thoroughly grounded in reality.

Sidney Borowitz presents a clear-eyed, even-handed explication ofoptimal solutions to our future energy needs. And because energytouches on practically every aspect of our daily lives, FarewellFossil Fuels is of vital importance to our future and the future ofour children. ... Read more

Product Description
Co-Winner of the 2004 Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Publication Prize

High Altitude Energy: A History of Fossil Fuel in Colorado is a timely, articulate history of coal, coke, oil, gas, and oil shale extraction and production in Colorado. Scamehorn examines the origin, evolution, and aspects of the social and economic impact of these industries in Colorado. He treats each of the fuel sources separately from their discoveries and initial production in the nineteenth century to the energy crisis of the 1970’s, through the 1980’s, and up to the present energy concerns. In detailing the state’s long history of fossil fuel production, Scamehorn thoroughly dissects the arguments and conclusions of the domestic energy shortages made during the decades since the Second World War. Today’s readers-faced with either ever increasing energy costs or controversial plans to drill in national wildlife refuges-will be impressed by the timeliness of Scamehorn’s analysis of the failure of the U.S. government to achieve energy independence. ... Product Description

Over the coming years we will need to move from a global culture addicted to cheap, abundant petroleum to a culture of compelled conservation, whether through government directive or market forces. The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook provides useful practical advice for preparing your family and community to make the transition.

This book takes a positive, upbeat, and optimistic view of “the Great Change,” promoting the idea that it can be an opportunity to redeem our essential interconnectedness with nature and with each other. The many rifts that have grown up since oil became the world’s prime commodity can be mended: between cities and their food sources; the design of the suburban-built environment and its car-oriented sprawl; runaway greenhouse warming, and the clearing of forests and toxification of rivers, oceans, and land. Topics covered include:

• Rebuilding civilization
• Changing your needs

Book Review: The Post Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook

[...] is the blog where this review originated.

How you know that the self-help book you're reading is no ordinary self-help book: You get to step 1, and find out it's titled "Rebuild Civilization." Wow. Heavy.

That said, The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook: Recipes for Changing Times, written by Albert Bates, is not just a heavy, depressing book. In fact, it's in part a cookbook -- and a humorous one at that. You get a Tuscan bean soup recipe right next to a description of a compact sewage treatment system. Yummy.

Hungry, and got no stove due to the destruction of the kitchen as we know it? Well, now you have explicit instructions on how to make seasoned roasted potatos and chestnuts over an open fire.

If you're an environmentalist with a good sense of humor, you'll enjoy Post-Petroleum. In a lot of ways, Post-Petroleum is like The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook. Hopefully, you won't ever need the advice therein. But it's a helluva lotta fun reading how you can make out like a bandit out of tight situations. Only with Post-Petroleum, these tight situations are presented in a way that it seems they could quite conceivably happen -- relatively soon.

I focused on the advice that could help me right here and now, like growing my own food. At the moment, I spend about $20 on fresh fruits and veggies a week at the farmers' market. Once I got a full-on veggie garden going on my balcony (fruit trees seem a bit out of reach at the moment), I might save some money while feeling more self-sufficient.

That said, the instructions to can, dry, and jam my own foods seem a bit extreme at this moment in time for me -- about as crazy as creating a fallout shelter -- which the book also provides instructions on -- a la the the dude that ends up going under electroshock therapy in Six Feet Under.

Of course, most of this advice is intended for a post-ecological disaster era. I mean, this book gives you instructions on how to eke out the remaining liquid from your water pipes. I don't think Albert wants me to do that now, but it's kinda cool knowing I could handle this type of situation.

Post-Petroleum can seem schizophrenic at times. Its transportation advice goes from instructions for riding a horse to using dimethyl ether as fuel. I suppose those signify the contradictions of the age that we live in. In a weird way, Post-Petroleum helps put the paradoxes of our age in an order of sorts. I'll be keeping this book to think by, to cook by, and to live by, if ecological disaster does end up coming my way -

3-0 out of 5 stars Good starter book
Although it's a bit general on most things, this book has been helpful in many areas so I give it 3 stars. It may lack some detail but it covers many, many areas and lists other books you can read, websites, etc., to gather details, which I appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes for surviving the coming change
An interesting non-pretentious guide to the next 20 years. Ever since the stock market crash of September 2008, it has been obvious to even the masters of the universe on Wall Street that something is terribly wrong with our society. They have not grasped the cause of the change but those of us who make our living making things have noticed the slide years ago. The main theme in the book is sustainability, which in simple terms involves recycling as much of what you use as you can. In truth, as the author points out, there is no such thing as sustainability if there is such thing as entropy and inefficiency. The solution is living simple and keeping the population in check ¯something we have failed to do. We need to minimize our un-sustainability. The author explains it better (pg. 164):

"Dr. Albert Bartlett, a physics professor has been lecturing for more than 30 years on the subject of sustainability and what it really implies. He is quick to point out that you can't understand sustainability without first understanding some basic arithmetic."

"Bartlett gives the example of a bottle filled with bacteria. Bacteria grow by doubling, so one bacterium divides to become two; the two divide to become four; and so on. (geometric progression) Suppose, we had bacteria that doubled this way every minute. Suppose we put one of these bacteria into an empty bottle at eleven in the morning and then observed that the bottle was full at 12 noon.
First question: When was the bottle half full?
Answer: 11:59, one minute before 12, because they double in number every minute.
Second question: If you were the average bacterium in that bottle, when did you first realize that you were running out of space?
Answer: At 12 noon the bottle is full. One minute before that it's half-full. Two minutes before noon it's quarter full, then an eighth, then a sixteenth. At five minutes before noon, when the bottle is only 3 percent full and 97 percent open space just yearning for development, it is unlikely you, being a bacterium, would realize there's a problem. If bacteria had human intelligence, you might see your predicament in the last ten seconds."

Bartlett goes on to say that even science and technology won't save us ¯ it only gives us a little more time. "At 12 noon, one bottle is full and there are three to go. At 12:01, two bottles are filled and there are two to go, and at 12:02 all four are filled and that's it. Game over. They'd need to find eight more bottles to go another minute."

No, the only answer is to restructure to form a society that uses less, and recycles what it uses, with fewer people. Our only choice is how it happens. If past human history is our guide, then by famine, war, and mass extinction. Keep in mind that the world can only support about 10-15% of the people here today. We have a choice, to preserve what we know, and change the trajectory. The author has done a great job of minimizing philosophizing and presents numerous tools for our survival. And the recipes look great too!

Product Description

At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the human race finds itself caught in an "energy trap." Carbon-rich fossil fuels—coal, petroleum and natural gas—are firmly entrenched as the dominant sources of our energy and power. Their highly concentrated forms, versatility of use, ease of transport and storage, ready availability, and comparatively low costs combine to give fossil fuels an unassailable competitive advantage over all alternative sources of energy. This economic reality means that fossil fuels will inevitably continue to be the backbone of the global economy for the next quarter of a century, even while the adverse climate and environmental effects of our dependence on fossil fuels hurtle toward global crisis levels. To avert unacceptable environmental consequences, the world must deliberately and incrementally supplant fossil fuels with alternative energy sources, on a schedule that will have them overtake fossil fuels in the world's energy budget by 2035. To achieve this urgent goal without massive economic dislocation and reduction in standards of living, global investment in fossil fuel efficiency will be just as important as the development and massive deployment of alternative energy technologies and delivery systems.

In this eagerly awaited sequel to his prize-winning bestseller, The Age of Oil, Leonardo Maugeri, the strategy director of one of the world's biggest energy companies, puts forward a hard-headed, concrete plan in simple everyday language for how to shift the world economy's primary energy dependence from fossil fuels to renewable energies by 2035. Assuming no specialized knowledge, the author walks the reader chapter by chapter through each of the fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas) and each of the alternative energy sources (nuclear, hydroelectric, biofuel, wind, solar, geothermal, and hydrogen). Drawing on the unparalleled data and analysis resources at his command, Dr. Maugeri assesses the problems and advantages of each energy source in turn in order to constrain the optimal mix of energy sources that the world should be aiming for in 2035. Critically, he lays out the arduous path for getting from here to there. Dr. Maugeri shows that next 25 years will be a rocky marriage between the old and the new energy paradigms, during which we must dramatically improve the efficiency of our continuing use of fossil fuels, while driving ahead on all fronts to an energy future based on a suite of sustainable energy sources.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes sense of energy issues without discouraging you.
What I like best about this book is that Dr. Maugeri really covers the different sources of energy completely and clearly enough so that when you finish the book, you can even disagree with his proposals, and know why you disagree. It is priceless for understanding the real issues behind fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. Just understanding the difference between a parallel hybrid car and a series hybrid helped me make choices about buying a car (I am waiting, and I know when I will buy). The Deepwater Horizon explosion is not the first gaffe in the long history of British Petroleum, as the history in the Chapter on oil reveals.
In addition to the information in the jacket, the author is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He writes regularly for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and teaches at Columbia and MIT. I have read his articles in Scientific American, Foreign Affairs, WSJ and the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. He has a conversational style and is easy to understand. Just so you know, I worked with Dr. Maugeri on this book, so I got into it more deeply than the average reader. I had worked in several of the areas described in the book and did research in the others; it is amazing how he has brought so much different information together in one place. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Yes, this book makes some valid points about fuel consumption and it is done in a good format it overall misses the mark.It really should change the title into Fuel and Global Warming.I found it went a little too much into global warming and offered only limited solutions. It also basically blames global warming on primarily cars which is a falsehood. It does mention factories as a source as well but not nearly enough. It never says word one about airplanes as being a source of carbon emmisons though they are a significant factor.I would pass this book by in wanting to have your child learn about fossil fuels. Also, my child seemed pretty bored with it so not a winner in my household.

5-0 out of 5 stars making a serious topic fun for young readers
In What's So Bad About Gasoline, young readers find out what uses oil--cars, airplanes, boats, factories, and countless other machines. The world is dependent on oil as its main source of energy. Although oil is plentiful right now, the supply will eventually run out, and even worse, burning oil is very damaging to the environment.

This book in the Let's-Read-And-Find-Out Science series begins with a picture of cars and trucks jammed packed on a bridge that anyone who has been stuck in traffic will cringe at. Then it begins with everyday people filling up their cars with gasoline and goes on to explore what gasoline is, where it comes from, and why petroleum was known, but not valued until the late nineteenth century. Readers will learn how fuels have become widely used and depended on and have contributed to damaging our environment. The book is laid out in a simple and easy to understand format and the cartoon-like ink drawings make a difficult and serious subject fun for young readers.

But what good would a book like this be if it didn't offer alternatives and suggestions on how to cut back our gas consumption? Rockwell does just that and points out alternatives such as solar power, wind power, nuclear energy, and alternative fuels. The closing pages offer fast facts about gasoline and list related Internet sites. In a history section that moves quickly through the centuries, Rockwell presents facts that may intrigue adults as well as children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is gas bad for the planet?
When one of my kids asked me (almost verbatim) the question in this book's title, I had a hard time giving a satisfactory answer. So I was happy to find such a thorough explanation written in a way that kids will understand. The book covers pretty much every question a curious kid can ask, from the formation of petroleum, to the history of using fossil fuels, to the greenhouse effect, to the many ways we use petroleum products today, to how we get petroleum and coal, and even alternative energy sources. But it doesn't read like a textbook, and it never sounds preachy or biased. The illustrations are great, too. ...
