4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
Excellent guide for a new "shark tooth" hunter.I spent many a day looking for shark's teeth in the Calvert Cliffs portion of Maryland.I came away with hundreds of teeth and no way to identify them. This book will not only help you to identify the teeth, it will also give you the time period and history of that shark.A very comprehensive guide to anyone that loves sharks and wants to identify their finds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Color And More Information
With the pages in black and white it's very difficult to determine what tooth you actually have. There are no pictures of what the sharks look like or where the teeth are typically found. I was very unhappy with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall- a little vague in areas
I know it's hard to specifically ID some teeth - and this book is a great start - and it's a great overall resource. But there are few photos - and the language can be a little more scientific than I was looking for.

Good overall listing of most of the teeth you will ever encounter. I was collecting in Venice, FL for a while and this book helped me ID or at least classify many of the teeth I found.

It could use some further specifics and I was able to find a small almost pamphlet - type book locally that was a little better with photos and easier to understand explanations.

I recommend it for the new shark tooth fossil-hunter.

4-0 out of 5 stars An ok overall summary of shark tooth varieties
I have collected fossil shark teeth for 30 years and have purchased many different books. This is a nice basic summary of the various types of teeth that you are likely to encounter. For any extensive identification or details I usually look at palentology data at universities. So I would recommend this as a base, knowing that for details you will always have to dig out more details from professional references.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book
a good book,
very useful for shark teeth identification, unfortunately there is not much more information but general information and classification is easy to carry out with this book in your hand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Expert Reference
A wonderful REFERENCE for perspective, particularly, in the collection of specimen from Mid-America/Western States, USA. This is a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars An atlas for Pierre Shale ammonites
The Pierre Shale Formation has yielded some of the most attractive upper Cretaceous ammonite faunas. Those who had a chance to visit the BHIGR museum in Hill City probably know what I am talking about. These ammonites are very important biostratigraphically: this book depicts most of them and saves the reader from parsing all Bill Cobban's articles to get an idea of how rich was ammonite biodiversity at this time. Illustrations are clear, text is authoritative and information accurate. I regret the lack of a composite log and tips to pinpoint particular biozones in the field. It is nevertheless a necessary addition to all cephalopod fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well written and documented, and informative.
This book was written by the folks at Black Hills Institute of Geologic Research.Neal is the leading authority of invertibrates of this period. The book lists species and where specimens have been found. I have foundit to be an excellent desk reference as well as a great field guide. Recommended reading for the Ammonite hunter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the book but don't buy the fossils
Santana formation (in Brazil)has been providing scientists some of the most spetacluar fossils in the world, specially from fishes, insects, both terrestrial and flying reptiles. This book presents an amazing collectionof them as well as their geologic context and some specific fossilpreparation technics such as acid etching.Prepare yourself to learneverything about these fossils from the view of experts and with highlyillustrative pictures presenting, in large variety, some of the mostamazing fossils discovered there plus some of the most creative fakedfossils of many kinds that were produced there to explore the lack ofknowledge of fossil buyers. The text was scholarly written and certanllywill represent a challenge for the generall public.

One very specialreason to buy this book is that brazilian laws do not allow fossil trade orcommerce and just the scientific and academic community have permission tohandle them, so this book is the only legall way to get in contact withthese material. If you buy one real Santana fossil you can be shure thatyou are supporting an illegal explorer in Brazil, his internationalcontacts and extremelly badly paid workers.

Believe me, You will findeverything you may intend to know about Santana Formation fossils in thebook and if you acquire it instead of real fossils you will be cooperatingwith Our efforts to preserve this part of Earth's history. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Plants have played a central role in the evolution of life on Earth and the colonisation of land, to the extent that without them we would not exist, yet even to scientists the history of land vegetation and plant fossils is not well-known. This book describes plants' origins and development, illustrated with a unique selection of plant portraits, many of which have never been seen before. The fossil record shows that plants first `invaded' the land some 400 or more million years ago, as tiny leafless stems which only grew upright for a few centimeters and were restricted to lowlying, waterlogged habitats; from these unpromising beginnings, the whole of Earth's flora has evolved. Each of the major groups of plants is described in general order of appearance in the records, from the first giant clubmosses, horsetails and ferns, which contributed so much to the developing forests, through the seed plants to the angiosperms, the flowering plants, which dominate the landscapes of today. The authors conclude the book with an account of the scientists who have contributed to the development of the story, and hazard some predictions about the directions which future research may take.CHRISTOPHER J. 4-0 out of 5 stars Consice overview of fossil plants
This book provides a very readable and concise overview of different groups of fossil plants, from the Middle Silurian to the present. There are plenty of books out there about fossil animals, and in particular dinosaurs. For those of us who want to know a bit more about what grows as well, this is a good book to start with. The latter half of the book consists of photographs of fossils.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing. well-rounded study
Although written chiefly for students of paleontology, Plant Fossils is an accessible and attractive book for anyone interested in origin and evolution of land plants. It also reveals how paleobotanists obtain microscopic cross-sections of plant fossils for study and reviews some of the major figures in paleobotany since its professional inception in the early 19th century. Many beautiful line drawings and exceptional black and white plates enliven the text. ... Read more
