5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and close to unique
I teach basic math (pre-algebra) at a community college. I'm currently using an excellent textbook by Tobey (Basic College Mathematics), but we have to move through it too fast. The goal of most pre-algebra courses is to get students ready for algebra, and that's usually too ambitious.

This wonderful little book by Graham covers much LESS material than any other basic math text I've seen, and that's what makes it so great. It takes its time with the true basics; using a calculator to practice counting by fours, for example. There is a two-page section on converting from a 24-hour clock to a 12-hour clock. There's a detailed explanation of a grocery store receipt. There's an introduction to every key on a very basic calculator. The book covers pre-algebra in the right way, by spending a great deal of time on the idea of using letters instead of numbers in math, and hardly any time on manipulating equations.

It's really a terrific piece of work either for self-study or for use (with supplements) in a classroom. More of my students would succeed if I could do half as much with them in the semester. I'd like to see this book widely imitated. ... Read more
