4-0 out of 5 stars Trouble Comes In A Bunch (Of Grapes!)
Looking for a new planet to picnic on, Commander Toad and the crew of STAR WARTS descend to the planet and immediately discover that everywhere they step giant purple grapes sprout up.In no time at all, Commander Toad, Doc Peeper, Lieutenant Lily, and Mr. Hop are swallowed up by the giant purple grapes and are telling some of the worst grape jokes in the universe! And it looks like there's no way out!

Jane Yolen is an award-winning children's book author as well as a writer of adult science fiction and fantasy. She's earned the Caldecott-given for the most distinguished picture book, the Nebula-given to the most distinguished writing in the field of science fiction and fantasy, the Golden Kite-given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the World Fantasy Award. She's written seven Commander Toad Adventures, including COMMANDER TOAD AND THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES, and COMMANDER TOAD AND THE BIG BLACK HOLE.With dozens of books written in many genres, Jane Yolen is a great author to introduce to young readers.

COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES is an absolute blast to read out loud to young readers or pre-readers.The short, descriptive sentences push the story along at a frantic and fun pace, and the color and black and white illustrations are great fun for a young audience.

With all the interest young kids today have in space-based programs on Cartoon Network, books like the Commander Toad series will bridge the gap between movies, video games, and the written word.Jane Yolen is an exemplary entertainer for young readers and parents willing to endorse the habit of reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars The planet is allergic to frogs and toads!
This is another silly outer-space book in the Commander Toad series, which my sons, ages 4 and 8, thoroughly ENJOY. In _Planet of the Grapes_, the crew arrives on an unknown planet only to discover that it grows huges grapes the moment they touchtheir feet to its surface.

Due to a chance accident with a loaded syringe,Doc Peeper with the green grass hair discovers that the planet is allergic to *them*. It is Lieutenant Lily's sneezes which give him the clue.He was about to inject her with antihistamine, which is the reason for the syringe.

Complicated plot, lots of funny stuff. These books are enjoyable to both kids and adults. ... Read more

Product Description

With more than forty native and introduced species of frogs and toads occurring in the southeastern United States, the region represents the heart of frog and toad diversity in the country. Renowned herpetologists Mike Dorcas and Whit Gibbons provide us with the most comprehensive and authoritative, yet accessible and fun-to-read, guide to these sometimes wet, sometimes warty wonders of nature.

Dorcas and Gibbons enumerate the distinguishing characteristics of frogs and toads, including how they are different from other amphibians and the differences between a frog and a toad. Also discussed are the morphology of frogs and toads, the main groups to be found in the Southeast, and their habitats. Individual species accounts contain a physical description of the species plus information about distribution and habitat, behavior and activity, food and feeding, predators and defense, calls and vocalizations, reproduction and description of eggs and tadpoles, and conservation. Accompanying each account are photographs illustrating typical adults and variations and distribution maps for the Southeast and the United States.

Given the recent worldwide decline in amphibian populations and increasing scientific and popular concern for what these declines mean for all other organisms, Frogs and Toads of the Southeast will appeal to people of all ages and levels of knowledge interested in natural history and conservation. The guide will help foster the growing interest in frogs and toads as well as cultivate a desire to protect and conserve these fascinating amphibians and their habitats.

A Wormsloe Foundation Nature Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a field guide ...
I recommend this book for young people.
It is easy to read and has nice pictures but it is not a field guide (the book is too wordy, large and heavy).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I love this book.I use it constantly and recommend it whenever I talk about frogs. It has great pictures and lots of useful information.I don't use this as a field guide so much as a reference book, although it does have helpful tips on identifying the frogs in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the SouthEast
Possitives:
Great photos, and easy to follow breakdown of the Frogs and Toads of the SouthEast.

Negatives:
I ended up buying a second book that came with a CD of most of the frog calls.Had this book came with an audio cd of calls, I would not have needed to purchase a second book.

Note:I also own the "Snakes of the Southeast" and "Turtles of the Southeast" by the same authors... Also great books if your interested in identifying herps around the SouthEast. ... Read more

Product Description

The heart of this book consists of detailed systematic accounts of the known fossil frogs and toads (anurans) of North America and their localities. Extinct fossil frogs and toads are fully discussed and illustrated, and in some cases are re-diagnosed and re-described. For fossil taxa still living, the book gives the modern characteristics, ecological attributes, and modern ranges, and includes illustrations of diagnostic skeletal elements. The volume begins with an overview of the anurans and anuran studies, a general account of the skeleton and bones, and a discussion of the early evolution of the Anura, along with the formal classification of anuran taxonomic groups found in the North American fossil record. The third part of the book presents an epoch-by-epoch discussion of Mesozoic, Tertiary, and Pleistocene anurans, the classification and phylogeny of the anurans, and a comprehensive list of references.

There's a frog on the log

in the middle of the bog.

A small, green frog

on a half-sunk log

in the middle of the bog....Amazon.com Review
You may already know an old lady who swallowed a fly, but you're about to meet her chief competition: "a frog on the log in the middle of the bog." Author Karma Wilson (Bear Snores On) teams up with illustrator Joan Rankin in a delightfully bouncy, rhythmic jaunt through the culinary exploits of said frog. Young readers will quickly get the hang of the story, as the amphibious protagonist swallows most of the insect population of a bog. Starting small ("He flicks ONE tick/ as it creeps up a stick"), he quickly works his way up: "ONE tick, TWO fleas, THREE flies (Oh my!),/ FOUR slugs (Ew, ugh!) in the belly of the frog/ on a half-sunk log/ in the middle of the bog." As the greedy frog’s belly grows, we are treated to a hilarious view of the claustrophobic quarters within. Is there any hope for these hapless bugs, or are they destined for digestion? Rankin’s watercolors are both beautiful and comical, appealing to readers of all ages. Highly recommended! (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for that...GATOR!
This book is a delightfully cute example of a children's book that just works all the way around. The illustrations are fun and fresh and intriguing and the rhymes are hilarious and catchy and just flow really nicely.Lots of children's books have a moral or a message for the children to learn or glean from, and maybe this one helps a child...count (?) but in the end it doesn't matter because this is just so much fun!Coming from a parent who has to read countless books countless times, this one is a keeper. In fact, I think I might read this one again tonight. How can you go wrong with a frog on a long in a bog?Throw in some nasty bugs and you have magic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute story
Cute story! My two year old likes this book and so does my husband!

4-0 out of 5 stars Froggy fun for over 3's
There's a frog on the log in the middle of the bog.

A small, green frog
on a half-sunk log
in the middle of the bog.

And so the frog proceeds to gobble up various creatures that increase in number. From a tick to five slimy snails. Yet that half-sunk log isn't what it seems, and when it suddenly rises, showing eyes, and JAWS, the frog loses his lunch as they escape while he hollers.

It's a fun romp with a hungry and rather greedy frog, and the increasing number of his lunch means that it's a book useful for counting too. The illustrations are dreamy watercolour depictions of bog life. These aren't my favourite style of illustrations, and they lack detail for the younger readers. I do prefer Wilson's collaborations with Chapman.

I find the rhythm a little laboured but it's captivating enough, and one that a parent can read a few times over. Not Karma Wilson's best in my opinion, but it is fun. I actually bought the book because my daughter likes frogs, but the lack of detail meant that the frogginess of the frog wasn't so obvious. Towards the end it barely resembles a frog. Also, the internal belly pictures are too abstract a concept for the younger ones.

My favourite element are the tiny details that are not a direct part of the story. Such as the flyrodrome or the beetle boats for hire.

My daughter (20 months), who 'reads' above her age, enjoys it although only occassionally picks it up herself. I do make a big deal of the every-growing frog. I think that perhaps an older child might get more out of it. Children that already love messing about in mud with slimy critters would likely love it.

I do recommend it, but for 3 years and older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Froggy Favorite
our family of four has a weakness for frog stories and this one is by far our favorite. The illustrations are unique and attractive, which is actually what made me buy it. The lyrical style of the writing and the story are fun and silly. The fact that it's a counting book is just icing on the cake. ... Read more

This is a great book for anyone, professional or not. Hard to encompass all of the species and varieties of frogs in the world into one book, but this one does a good job.And you can't beat the price.Good photos, good basic descriptions, I am very glad that I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in frogs!
I have several books on frogs because my husband and I keep several species, but of all my books, and some are very expensive reference books, if I had to pick only one book to keep this would be the one. There is so much detailed information and it's all so well organized! And the pictures are awsome! This book is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good information & photos
Despite its somewhat odd title, this book is surprisingly 'complete' in that it covers virtually all the families of frogs known to science (excluding fossil forms). There is an impressive amount of interesting information here, and I would even recommend it to professional zoologists/herpetologists. The image quality is also very good overall. Highly recommended for anyone interested in amphibians! ... Read more

In spring, when City Dog runs free in the country for the first time, he spots Country Frog sitting on a rock, waiting for a friend. “You’ll do,” Frog says, and together they play Country Frog games. In summer, they meet again and play City Dog games. Through the seasons, whenever City Dog visits the country he runs straight for Country Frog’s rock. In winter, things change for City Dog and Country Frog. Come spring, friendship blooms again, a little different this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different kind of Mo Willems book!
The kids enjoyed this book, though I must say, I loved it more. Mo Willems is their favorite author (girl 5 / boy 3).They seek out his books whenever we're at the library.

I cry whenever I read this book.I love the simplicity of the story that shows the love between to two friends and the growth that occurs because of this friendship.

We are avid readers, and one of the things that I seek out in a book are a great story and quality writing and illustrations. So even though, I think my kids may be too young to enjoy the book fully now, I am going to keep reading it to them as they grow as I think it's a brilliant book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice storybook
This is a very nice story book that is great for any child that has a new experience in a new place!A lovely story and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly beautiful
I was hoping for a nice book to read with my daughters, nothing more.As we were turning the pages I started to suspect we were in the midst of something special. When we got to the scene where the dog was waiting for the frog who couldn't be there my four-year-old wanted to know why I was staring at the page for so long.Ok, she said, frog's not there - read the next page.We finished the book, and after a moment's reflection she asked me why the frog didn't come.I really almost lost it.

Wholeheartedly recommended. One of finest meditations on life, aging, and death I have ever encountered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Beautiful illustrations, touching story. We are fans of both Willems and Muth, and I was so pleased by this one! Lovely, touching story of friendship and life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving story of friendship and the changing seasons
At first glance, this seems like a simple picture book about a dog and a frog that become friends against the backdrop of the changing seasons, but it is so much more than that. The story begins in spring as 'city dog' runs around, playing by himself until he comes upon a 'country frog'. The two soon strike up a friendships that goes through the seasons - spring, summer, fall, and finally winter. Throughout these seasons, the pair's friendship grows from strength to strength as each discovers new games and enjoys each other's company. But then spring arrives again, and city dog is saddened when his old frog buddy does not show up.

The story is poignant and older children and adults will understand the deeper meaning behind this simple story - that of friendship found and lost, of the changing seasons, and of life going on. Young children will delight in the beautiful watercolor illustrations which vividly capture the different hues of the seasons - the cheerful pastels of spring, the sunny warmth of summer, the glorious colors of fall, and the snowy winter landscape. My kindergartener loved the book cover and volunteered to read the entire book which she did beautifully. It is simply written so that beginner readers will be able to read it independently, and it is also a wonderful book for reading aloud. The themes are universal and will appeal to readers of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicky Loved It
It's the best Commander Toad book!I like them all. They all are great. The monster in this one was cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, funny science fiction for kids and their parents
Commander Toad is a delight. He's "bold and bright", though not quite as bright as he thinks. His crew (an amalgam of loose takes on Star Wars and Star Trek characters) puts up with his prideful ways, because he is, after all, a good leader.Together with his mixed-gender crew he gets into and out of a wonderful series of scrapes. This book is the first in the series.

Jane Yolen writes for kids. For example, when Commander and crew are threatened by a sea monster who makes it clear that they're about to be lunch, I asked my 4-year old what he thought would happen.

"Shoot him with a ray gun," he answered.

"I don't know," I said."I think that they'll find out that the monster's just lonely, and they'll make friends."

Turn the page, and BAM! Lt. Lily, Toad's female weapons master, is blasting away (to no effect). Thanks, Jane.Only you could make a story about a bunch of space-explorer frogs be true-to-life.

Jane Yolen also writes for the adults who read books to their kids. There's nearly a pun a page, and the Commander's ludicrous solutions to problems have a germ of genius unrestrained by the laws of physics that will have you shaking your head over his cleverness.

Buy this book, or regret the lost opportunity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy times between friends...
My four-year-old boy loves these stories. My sixteen-year-old boy loved these stories when he was also that little. These are timeless stories about Frog and Toad. Toad is a more up-tight and edgy; Frog is more relaxed and easy-going. Together, they teach, through their adventures, simple and amusing tales about true friendship. After all, friendship is a very important thing in life, and the author dwells happily on many of the quiet times between friends such as sitting in front of a fire together drinking tea, or one friend sending another friend a letter just to let the person know how grateful he is that the other is his friend. These books are also great for kids just learning how to read. The book includes about twenty stories that can be read in sequence or in random order.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have
I spotted this book in a local bookstore recently and, remembering the characters fondly from my own youth, bought a copy for my 3 1/2 year old. This version is three-in-one, a total of fifteen to twenty classic stories about important values such as bravery, the sweetness of friendship, willpower and indulgence, pessimism and hope, humility, getting angry and making amends, persistence in the face of derision, and so on, all told in a gently humorous, highly affectionate language that speaks in a way young children can readily understand. Hard to overstate the quality of this book both in content and delivery. Ten stars if I could.

Probably best suited for 2-7 years of age.

By the way, I'm not sure why this version is credited to Alyssa Satin Capucilli. It's the Arnold Lobel book through and through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ain't Nothin' Like Arnold Lobel for Beginning Readers!
I am an ESOL teacher and no matter what age or grade level I am teaching, I always have a few beginning readers. For beginning readers, there is no author as wonderful or necessary as Arnold Lobel.Frog and Toad seems to be every beginning reader's friend. They are entertaining characters and the stories are fun.The stories also introduce frequent sight words and reinforce them through exposure. One can be cynical about Arnold Lobel but I can tell you, he works! If students are willing to read his books, no matter what age they are, I guarantee they will get better and move on to higher level reading.Wonderful books and the best in beginning readers. ...
