5-0 out of 5 stars Love this!
This is a great book. The poem flows smoothly as it's read with fun & enticing pictures. It has a cute storyline about a frog catching his dinner with a twist at the end!A great book for little ones!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute book
Just know that the sticky tongue will be torn off within an hour of opening. I thought this book would be much larger. If I had known how small it would be, I would have gotten the $10 one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids love this book
Kids love this book, but I purchased a hardcover book and it came in as small as a broad book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twisted fun.
The illustrations are bright and action packed, but then again so is the story. This little frog gobbles up everything in sight until he unexpectedly meets his match. My husband wasn't sure at first what to think about the frog's ill fated debut in our child's life but the book has earned its place in both of our hearts. Its extremely fun to read aloud and even your under 12-monthers will love hearing the slurping whooping sounds. Ours does anyway!

3-0 out of 5 stars cute story, poor quality
this is a cute story, however this is about the cheapest, poorest quality of a board book i have ever seen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
Bought this for my niece for her 2nd birthday. She loves it and brings it to everyone to read to her. She especially loves pointing to a picture of the frog and croaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
I'm a fan of Usborne Books and this one has particularly wonderful art and totally fun rhymes. My 22 month old daughter loves it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute book
I actually gave this book out as a party favor for the babies/toddlers at my son's first birthday barty and it was a big hit! This is a cute book, my one-year old loves it (although he loves ALL books at this age). I took away one star because the flaps are simply a cardstock material that has been glued onto the page.I think I was expecting the type of flaps that are made out of the thicker cardboard type. Its not a big deal unless your little one thinks books are toys - mine does so I'm sure its a matter of time before he tears off the flap.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny book
My 5-year-old boy enjoys this story. He laughs at the frog falling off the log.It is a good book for him to practice sounding out words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun phonics readers!

Toad heaven was a good book it had a whole lot of comedy and dangers. It is a good book if yoou like animals or you have read one of the other cane toad books. The only bad thing about it is that it dosent have a good ending but of course there is a sequal besides that its a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
This book is a wonderful addition to your child's library if you like to act out the story as the pictures lead your imagination into this boy and frog's world. It holds a special place in our hearts, because our dear friend shared it will all her children when they were growing up and then with her premature grandson while he was in NICU and later became an angel at the age of 18 days old.We had to have one after sharing her story and a few teary eyes as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful pictures
I bought this book for my grandson's 5th birthday. He is already beginning to read, so I had mixed feelings about no written text. However the drawings are so narrative that the lack of written language is a mute point.I think it will be a good experience overall for him to use another part of his brain to "read" the story. He loves Mercer Mayer, as do I, and we have been reading Little Critter, Littler Monster, etc. since he was born. Some of the books we own were ones that I read to his mom and aunt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Language Development
This book was recommended by my sister who is a speech pathologist. She was testing a student who had been misdiagnosed as having no English. She asked the child to tell her what he was happening in the pictures and he went about explaining what was happening, in English. This wordless book is a useful tool for any teacher to have. It could be used to determine how much language they have and what they know.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most fun without words!
This is such a fun book. The Mayers do an amazing job!!This is a wordless picture book. The story is about a boy who receives a frog for a present-the problem is he already has one!!You will truly laugh out loud as you follow the story with the entertaining pictures that tell far more than words ever could. It also is a great tool for teaching children to tell a story to you (enhancing vocabulary and reading skills). They can use the pictures and make up their own story. My kids LOVE this book and at seven and five they still get it out sometimes to show their friends or just for a laugh. If you enjoy this one be sure to check out the other titles in this series."Frog Goes to Dinner" and "A Boy, A Dog and A Frog"

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book in a good series.
Mercer Mayer's A Boy, a Dog and a Frog series is excellent overall. The illustrations are charming, with naturalistic detail, and delightfully exaggerated expressions on the characters' faces. I'd single out Frog Goes to Dinner myself, as perhaps my favorite book in the series. I've read all of them with my son, however, and this is the one he likes best.

What makes the series so good?the simple, wordless stories are easily understood by the youngest of children. However, they are universal enough (amusing, and with heartfelt emotion) that even adults will enjoy them.Plus, its great for a child's creativity to turn the book over to him and have him "read" the story. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Pre-readers...
As a mom of two emerging readers (one 3, one 5) I have done a lot of research into how children learn to read and this summer I am in hot pursuit of books that will help them practice.

One of the key skills that appears over and over in the literature is the ability to get 'clues' as to what is going on in the story from the pictures that accompany the text. This is one of the reasons I like this book. Without words, it allows my youngsters to practice their pre-reading skills of analyzing and interpreting what pictures mean.

The other reason, of course, is that this book is simply delightful. The drawings are detailed and funny and they keep my children coming back for more. A cute addition for a family's bookshelves.

[Don't forget to check out Tomie dePaola's wordless books as well.]

Good Reading reference books: "Reading Magic" by Mem Fox; " Raising Lifelong Learners" by Lucy McCormick; and the comprehensive if more cumbersome, "Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning about Print" by Marilyn Jager Adams.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Funny Wordless Restaurant Excursion
This is a series of funny wordless books about a boy and his pet frog, drawn lovingly in pencil. In this episode, the boy and his family are going to dinner at a fancy restaurant. The frog stows away in the boy's pocket, and while the family is ordering jumps out and begins to wreak havoc among the other diners. When it is caught, the boy claims it and the family is thrown out of the restaurant. The boy is sent to his room, where he plays happily with the frog.

His lack of penitence at having caused his family such trouble might be concerning to some parents, and the parental anger is far more concerning (although the wordless genre allows for adult interpretation of what was said), especially since the boy did not intend to bring the frog to the restaurant. However, this lighthearted fantasy portrays a bit of real human nature, allowing children to think about what different people are feeling in different scenes. It provides an example of what not to do in a restaurant, and might be a means of preparing a young reader for the experience. There are opportunities to discuss consideration of others, self-control, and table manners. This is a funny library checkout but perhaps shouldn't live on the free-reading shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Language Learning 3
Frog Goes to Dinner is a hilarious story that will engage language learners of all levels. The interesting plot line allows for practice of vocabulary and sentence structures used in the context of "going to a restaurant". This topic is of course useful at the beginning stages of language learning. A fun resource for use by teachers and students both.

Mercer Mayer's series of books are not only great for Children who are beginning to speak, they are also fantastic tools for language learning. Wordless books allow a language learner and their language helper to learn vocabulary and construct stories together in the target language. It is great for vocabulary consolidation, grammar development, and the development of storytelling skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent wordless book
I use this well-"written" book in speech and language intervention--assessment and treatment. The monochromatic illustrations are excellent, bringing to life the very funny story.Wordless books in general are great for language therapy, because the child is able to practice generating a narrative, with visual support. This one in particular is useful, because the story is tight and unambiguous.I highly recommend all of the Boy/Dog/Frog series, especially this one and "A Boy, a Dog, a Frog, and a Friend."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classic
This wordless picture book is great fun, especially the frog's expressions.Even though there are no words, you can still follow the plot easily and even pay more attention to the characters' expressions.I definitely recommend this book! ... Read more
