5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series!
We love all of the Brand New Readers! They are easy for new readers and help build their reading confidence.Would HIGHLY recommend this whole series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Turn a listener into a reader
My daughter has recently been very interested in reading. She's always loved being read to and was very content with that. She just turned 4 and suddenly it became her life's purpose to read.So she picked out this set and Mouse Has Fun at the bookstore. We went home, followed the instructions, and that night she "read" all 8 books to me.It's been about a week and now she can tell me which word is which on the page. She announced to me last night, "Mommy!I'm a reader now!Just like a big kid!"These books made her successful from the very start.I'm so impressed that I just ordered 8 more sets from here!

5-0 out of 5 stars For the pre-reader and new reader.
This book is a delight to share with any child from age 2 through experienced readers of 6 or seven. Wonderful illustrations cover about 80% of the page and show exactly what the very large print words say on the bottom 20% of the page. So, you can have fun sharing this book with a 2 year old and talk about the pictures. The book also uses concepts such as over and under, etc. Threes and fours can start connecting the pictures to the words. New readers of 4 to 7 years old will have great success with the short, 3 to 6 word sentences, and many visual clues in the illustrations. This is one of the best easy reader series I've seen in a long time. I'll be recommending it to the children and parents in the library where I work. I am also getting my own copies to share with my 2 year old grandson. ... Read more

Our 5-yr-olds found this at the Greenleaf Hut on Mt. Lafayette while we were resting. After reading through the first few pages they wanted to stay there longer so we could read the rest. (Pretty high praise for a book!)I had to promise them I'd find it for them before they'd go down the rest of the way. Fortunately we found some available at reasonable prices. It's excellent for picture-reading and older readers, with fun information. Our 3rd -grader likes to spendtime poring over the pages in his free time, andI learned some things from it too!I recommended it to our school library. It's one of our most prized posessions , at the moment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great books
My kids love these books! They can sit and tell the story to themselves or I can read it to them and we can talk about all the facial expressions and what they could be thinking or saying! I think a great thing to have in any kids library!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wordless Comedy for Young Children
In this book a boy goes to the park with his pet dog and frog, leaves the frog alond to find whatever trouble he can.The frog flicks out his tongue to catch an insect, which turns out to be a bee.He disturbs a young couple's picnic, sinks a young boy's toy boat (retrieved by his annoyed mother), and joins a baby in its crib (swiping a sip of its bottle). This is a kind of visual comedy perfect for young children, and simple enough that after a parent helps with interpretation the first time, it may be fully enjoyed alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture book!
I love all of these Mercer Mayer books! No words-not necessary with all the expressions he uses.

5-0 out of 5 stars good teaching aid for autistic children
I loved these books growing up. Each time I opened the book I could make new stories and discover new details I hadn't seen the time before. This book, as well as other wordless children's books, have been great tools in assisting our autistic son to use correct usage of speech. It enables him to learn discriptive words and sequence of events while he tells us the story from his perspective. In addition the illustrator uses excellent skill in portraying emotion in the animals and child. This also helps my child learn about cause and effect that create certain emotions. I think this illustrated book is the benchmark for other picture books to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frog on his own
This is a wordless picture book that involves an adventure of a frog and a boy. Mercer Mayer has several wordless picture books in this series and my favorite is Frog Goes to Dinner.I particularily like these for use in a writing station. I am a second grade teacher and I have relunctant writers and using wordless picture books allows me to get them to write. Students can start out short and then expand on their stories by adding adjectives and adverbs. It also helps me to assess vocabulary of my students. I use these books to have students "read" to me so they can understandand practice fluency. Delightful books! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hold on, the planet is going down the drain!
This is probably the most disappointing of the Commander Toadbooks, which my sons, ages 4 and 8, truly ENJOY and even beg for! It is a fun read, but not as outstanding as the other books in this series.

The crew receives amessage from a planet inhabited only by doves. It turns out that their beans have swollen and clogged the storm sewer drains, causing the entire planet to flood. Very far-fetched, indeed.

The birds sent an SOS to Star Fleet when their wings grew tired from having no place to land. Mistaking their bird language, Commander Toad's crew brings a shipload of beans, which the birds don't really want. They just need dry ground on which to rest.

In the end, Commander Toad saves the day by swimming underwater to pierce the swollen beans with his official Star Fleet gadget. Then he must hold on to a statue of the Mayor while everything unattachedgoes down the drain! Swallow your disbelief!

The reason this book is not as good as the remainder of the series is because, in a few cases, the pictures don't mesh with the story. I.e. the text says Doc Peeper goes to the planet's surface, but the image doesn't show him in the sky skimmer. Also, the plot is even moreoddball than usual.

Incredibly fun series of books. Try _Commander Toad and the Space Pirates_ or _Commander Toad and the Intergalactic Spy_. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Best Easy Reader Series Available
Frog and Toad are two friends whose similar appearance belies their distinctive personalities.Toad is impulsive and emotional, and Frog easygoing and rational. The two of them get into a number of scrapes and adventures together, most of which hinge on their unique character traits.Lobel's brief, easy-reader chapters spin out complex, suspenseful plots in a way that looks effortless but is quite rare.Embedded in the stories are subtle moral implications relating to character qualities such as loyalty, wisdom, and self-control.The books are interesting enough to use for read-aloud, but simple enough to introduce as a beginner's read-alone.

Of all the easy-reader books in print, this series may be the best in writing quality, complexity, character development, and humor.Lobel's genius has earned, among other awards, a Caldecott Honor for Frog and Toad Are Friends and a Newbery Honor for FROG AND TOAD TOGETHER.Frog and Toad All Year and Days with Frog and Toad were both American Library Association Notable Children's Books.

This fine collection is available in CD audiobook and mp3 format, but they do need the pictures as accompaniment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog and Toad

Product Description
When his father takes a new job in Massachusetts, Ben Moroney must leave behind his best friend Tony, a western banded gecko named Lenny, and worst of all, the desert home he has loved and explored.

Ben s adjustment to his new environment is not going well until he unexpectedly finds a kindred spirit in his eccentric fifth-grade science teacher, Mrs. Tibbets. Together they explore the varied habitats on her rural property, and she introduces him to the elusive and endangered Eastern spadefoot toads that make their home there.

When Ben discovers that Mrs. Tibbets s relatives plan to sell the land to developers, he knows he must try to stop them. As Ben s obsession with saving the spadefoot toads habitat grows, his schoolwork suffers and his relationships with his family and new friends are strained. One foolish, impulsive act threatens to destroy his friendship with Mrs. Tibbets and maybe even her career. But just when it seems things can t get any worse, Ben finds a way to meet his responsibilities to the people around him and learns what it means to feel at home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
We are HUGE Bill Harley fans and this book did not disappoint us!We read it as a family (our kids are 8 & 5) and we all fell in love with it.It really encouraged us to further research endangered species and to be more conscious of the world and creatures around us.A great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars nature lovers and new kids
This book's not just for kids interested in nature or animals. There are also motifs of the new kid in school and the kid who knows what he likes but struggles with how other children will see him - and must decide what's more important: interests or reputation. These are struggles all kids can benefit from reading about.

It is also nice to find a book for kids where the environment is shown as important but also wondrous. I saw a lot of my nephews and their love for nature in the main character. Without being preachy, this book points out that all animals are part of the web of life, no matter how small. I am so happy this author is writing such things for kids!

The author also does not talk down to children. The main character is observant, thinks deeply, and has serious concerns in addition to the "normal" kid things like arguing with his sister. The author also includes a list of additional resources for readers who want to learn more.

I might as well add that as a girl who was/is just a little different, my favorite line is the main character saying his friend is a "smart girl who's not smart in the way that she never gets in trouble in school but smart like she's got her head tilted and looks at the world in a different way." That line is not trite, a nice thing to say (in my opinion!), and fits so many girls I know. Since it's a child noticing this, it's also an instance where the author is not talking down to kids.

If you know a kid who likes animals, wants to learn about different ecosystems in the US, or is suddenly the new kid in school, I recommend you share this book with them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dad/Daughter Book Club
My daughter and I belong to book club with four other father/daughter members. The girls are all fifth graders and we read a pretty wide range of young adult books. In Memory of Gorfman T. Frog turned out to be one of our favorites. As one of our activities we decided to write a review together. What we liked best about the book was the interesting characters, not just Josh, who reminded my daughter of herself - chatty, impulsive and misunderstood - but the frog too. Whoever heard of a frog with two extra legs? Well, after reading the book, we did and we believed in him too. That's another thing we enjoyed about the book. Unlike some of the mystery novels and fantasy stories we have read, this one is about real life and real people. And yet the real life plot with real moms, dads, teachers and friends is just as engaging and entertaining as the princesses and ghosts that inhabit some of the other stories we have read. We saw ourselves in this novel. We had a vote at the end of the meeting to see how many stars it should get. Two votes for four stars. Three votes for five.

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet Pedersen provides funny drawings for this zany story of a boy and his unusual frog
Fifth grade motor mouth Joshua spots a frog with three back legs and decides to bring it to school - but having an unusual frog doesn't win him the expected points. When trouble strikes, he decides to organize his classmates to fight for what's right in a daring plan that could lead to more trouble. Janet Pedersen provides funny drawings for this zany story of a boy and his unusual frog.

4-0 out of 5 stars A funny and fun book
This a book for all ages if you are looking for something to cheer your day up. It is best for children from ages six to eleven (I'm twelve.) It seems impossible for me to realize that this was written by an adult woman, not a boy. The main character, a 5th-grader named Josh, thinks in really immature ways that seem very real, something a full grown woman wouldn't usually be able to do. All the characters are rich and have their own unique personalities. The plot is simple, and the conflicts are good. I like the part when Josh explained that he was named after Joshua Tree National Park. Then he said that if he was going to be named after a park, he wished it could have been Death Valley. Funny comments like this are everywhere in the book. This is a quick read that gets to the point fast, and doesn't wast a second of your time. I liked it a lot, and I hope you do, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars super cute!
This is such a cute book! My 2 year old loves it. Frog is in love with Duck and goes out of his way to show her. It's not a topic you usually find in children's books and it's sweet. The illustrations have lovely rich colors too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog is adorable!
We love all of the books in Max Velthuijs' Frog Series. Our all-time favorite is "Frog is Frog"--but this one rates high up there as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars love in its purest form
A Frog and a Duck - love knows no boundaries. Anyone who has ever experienced that sick feeling of falling for someone - where you can't eat, sleep, think or talk will love this book! Frog in his red and white board shorts falls in love with white duck - a book to explain the beauty of love to young children and a book to give to the one you've fall in love with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frog In Love
This is a wonderfully written story about Frog who is in love with Duck. The morale of the story is "love knows no boundaries"--color doesn't matter. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful metaphor for cross-cultural couples
I first came across "Frog In Love" as a pre-school teacher. I was asked to read it for our Valentines Day celebration. I was deeply touched by Max Velthuijs's amazing ability to tenderly convey such a hopeful message that both young children, as well as adults can grasp easily. My husband and I were very much like frog and duck when we were good friends. Ironically, just as frog meets with an accident, so did my husband and just like duck, I was able to help him and we admitted our deep affection for eachother. Naturally I went and bought the story for my husband and read it to him. When I got to the last page, and read the words "Love knows no boundaries" we both had tears in our eyes. Someday when we have our children, we'll read this lovely story to them! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jump Frog Board book is very entertaining for toddlers
Received this book a few days before grandchildren arrived. The book is nicely illustrated and is written so that the children can participate by telling the frog to "jump"on each page.Cute.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! My daughter loves this book
My daughter loved this book so much when we checked it out at the library, that I decided to buy it for her birthday. Of course, I couldn't just find it at a store. Lucky for her, I found it online and with a cd! We love reading it together- she does the line "Jump frog Jump"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a boy
The repetition and predictable outcomes were a joy for my 4 year old boy. After 3 readings he enthusiastically read the Jump, Frog, Jump! page by himself! We used green pillows as lily pads and acted out the escaping frog scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy, customers, buy!
I was SO glad when this came back in print. This is a cumulative tale a la "House that Jack Built".You can get the children chanting "Jump Frog Jump!" in a few pages.Barton's bright folk-likeillustrations fit right in.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book for young readers!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful teamwork for my son and me
I think this "We Both Read" series is great.Whatever mood my boy is in when bedtime rolls around - whether he's working with me or against me - this concept works.I read the (difficult) left page in each two page spread, and the child reads the (easy) right. Teamwork. And even though these make no mention of Power Rangers or Batman Beyond, these are my boy's favorites. Along with some math books from Singapore(sgbox.com), and a learn-to-read series called "Now I'm Reading" by Nora Gaydos, these books are a great experience for your child. After your child has finished reading and they climb in bed, give your child something to strive for... turn on your booklight, turn off the room lights, and read your child a chapter or two from a more advanced book. Treasure Island, Harry Potter, anything by Roald Dahl...That's what works for my boys and I.

5-0 out of 5 stars a simple idea, with a touch of genius in it
This series of readers really works. I've been running through them at bedtime with my six-year-old, who adores taking it in turns with me to read her page after I've read mine. It turns reading into a collaborative game, with plenty of play-acting (doing the different voices of the characters)thrown in. At my daughter's stage of reading, a short book can be a longhaul, when she has to do it all by herself. The "We Both Read"books break up the text into manageable segments, and give her time-outwhile I do my share of the work. I'd like to see more and more titlesquickly added to the series. I am baffled as to why Amazon should inflict a$1.35 surcharge on the publisher's recommended price--it seems to runentirely counter to the Amazon way of doing things. But the booksthemselves are splendid. ... Read more
