1-0 out of 5 stars Available for Free on Web
The publishers have found a unique way to make money - they take something that was produced by the government, slap a price on it and ship it out.If I had done more careful research, I would have realized that this product was available on the web at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory web site.In fact, an updated version is available for download.

The work itself provides a general overview of various technologies, along with the developments and projections as to how that technology might be deployed in the future. It may be influenced by the priorities of the administration in power - this version gives a lot of play to the "hydrogen economy" that the administration is pushing. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This report focuses on specific companies that have developed, or are developing, low-carbon products and services for consumers - primarily for use in the home. Specifically, it considers opportunities for micro-generation, hydrogen fuels cells and green energy companies. It is closely tied to our section report about ‘Climate change and the home’.

Questions addressed

  • How well known are the major ‘green energy’ providers in each country?
  • Of those people aware of the providers, how many use them, or intend to use them in the near future?
  • What are people’s attitudes towards fuel-cell technology being used in different situations?
  • How do people react to a product profile test for a home CHP boiler utilising fuel cell technology?
  • What is the profile & regional distribution of ‘Enthusiasts’ for the home boiler prototype?
  • What responsibilities, attitudes, barriers to adoption are pertinent when considering the ‘Enthusiasts’?
  • How do any of these questions differ from country to country, between socio-demographic groups and between Climate Citizens, Mild Greens, and Sceptics & Uninvolveds?
Quote:

“36.8% of all English respondents were aware of at least one of the ‘green’ energy companies listed - with Climate Citizens being more aware (43.0% aware of at least one of the companies) and Sceptics & Uninvolved being less aware (23.9%)” ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Electric Car...
If you are looking to get your feet wet in the electric transportation field, this is a good start. It provides the fundamentals and concepts for a novice user to start to understand what is needed, and how parts work together. If you want to build an electric car, this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of electric cars
The Electric Car gives an excellent overview of electric cars. And as promised by the subtitle, Westbrook discusses the development and future of battery, hybrid and fuel-cell cars. All in all, this book is the best I have found on this important subject.I recommend it highly.

As interest increases in electric cars, particularly hybrids, books on the subject increase as well. Some are interesting and helpful.A surprisingly large amount are not.Few, if any, match the depth and breadth of the information and opinion in The Electric Car.

Westbrook spent his career working with electric cars. That shows in the book's detailed information and patient discussion. This is a book by an industry insider, who knows what he is talking about. What he does not know, he finds out, through contacts in the industry that he keeps active.

Westbrook does tend a little toward the pedantic. And he loves a long and complex sentence. No fluffy reading here.In fact, the book can be hard to get through if you are tired and not at the best of your game.

Nonetheless, if you have strong interest in electric cars, in my opinion you need this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book
This book provides an accurate history of electric and hybrid cars, however it may be a bit lacking in terms of charting the future of electric cars and their power sources. All in all a solid buy for a intoduction to electric car technology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
With energy consumption rising and with it our dependence on crude oil from politically uncertain regions, and faced with the threat to the environment from polluting emissions, it is becoming ever more evident that fuels from renewable resources are an increasingly attractive option to fossil fuels. Edinger and Kaul, like a growing number of other experts, hold the mobility of populations--transportation, in other words--responsposible for the rise in the rate of greenhouse gas emissions, a condition that can only get worse as less developed regions of the world emerge with their own needs and demands for mobility. What to do? Edinger and Kaul outline in sharp detail the shortcomings of current vehicular technologies and dominant fossil fuels. They present a careful, authoritative examination of innovative technologies that in their opinion have the best chance of combating dangerous reliance on conventional means of power, not only for transportation but other purposes as well. And they focus on special forms of fuel cell drive systems, with their high efficiencies and reduced consumptions, and on other emerging renewable technologies and their innovative, sustainable power sources--such as fuels from biomass and renewable electricity, a particularly promising source of energy for newly growing economies. Wide ranging in coverage, forthright in style, the book is an important review of how things are today, why they could get worse, but perhaps most importantly, what we can do about it. ...
