Extractions: Inside Local History News Inside Story 3 Recognising quality in heritage presentation Gill Hay We are fortunate to live in a country that has an increasing interest in its heritage, and a growing number of ways to interpret and present its cultural resource to the public. Recent examples include the new Sutton Hoo exhibition hall, the visitor centre at Whitby Abbey and the temporary exhibition of the Carlisle Millennium Project results in Carlisle Castle. Many of these displays are of very high quality, based firmly on the evidence but imaginatively explained and presented. They provide an interesting, stimulating but informative experience for a general audience; an experience that is both challenging and satisfying. Not all displays are of this character, however, and I am sure we can all think of 'visitor attractions' which are superficial and misleading. Their purpose seems to be to entertain and not at all to inform. It always seems to me that this is to misjudge the intelligence of the general public. People who have embraced the finer points of DNA analysis, radiocarbon dating and geophysical survey, as presented on television programmes such as Meet the Ancestors and Time Team, are perfectly capable of understanding other research techniques employed to elucidate the archaeological record, however scientific they may be. The solution is to present the methods in an accessible way, free of jargon; interpretation does not need to be esoteric or complex to be correct.

Extractions: University of Virginia South Asianists had earlier achieved a considerable degree of organization in the region, largely through the outreach activities of the National Defense Education Act Title VI center at the University of Virginia, led by historian Professor Walter Hauser. There was also a Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies (SASAAAS), oriented more toward teaching and public outreach than the SSRC Seminar program, but nonetheless illustrative of the possibilities of a regional organization in the enthusiastic participation it enjoyed. There was also interest in forming a less structured Southern Association of Africanists in the region, led by Ann Dunbar and others in central North Carolina, and focused on teaching outreach. Ann Dunbar organized the last meeting of the Seminar's first year at the University of North Carolina on April 20, 1974, focused on discussion of Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, with copies provided to all members. Akpan (South Carolina State College) and Nyang presented papers, with comments by Sagay and Thornton. (See report to SSRC, Appendix IId.) Expenses totaled $308.99. On the strength of the benefits that all participants felt they had gained from the Seminar's first year, and indications of continued sponsorship from several institutions in the region, the group resolved to apply for an extension of the Seminar's SSRC funding. All the papers from the year were filed with the Library of Congress through the chief its Exchange and Grant Division (Nathan R. Einhorn).

Extractions: The Gambia is a small (4,000 square miles or 11,295 sq. km) country in West Africa. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides ( see map ), except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained it's Independence on February 18, 1965. Oral and written history give account of traders moving in caravans from the trading towns of the Niger to those of The Gambia about 400 years ago. People have been interviewed who said that their territories owed loyalty, to the Mali Kingdom. Mali was mainly composed of Mandinka speaking people. Written records also talk about the states of Niumi, Baddibu and Niani owing loyalty to the king of Saloum at Kahone in present day Senegal. Sine Saloum was composed of Wolof and Serer language groupings. Other written records speak of meeting Jola speaking communities on the south bank near the River Gambia 400 years ago. Written history indicates, that the inhabitants of Kantora had once claimed that they owed loyalty to the Ahmami of Timbo, ruler of Futa Jalon. History also teaches that Demba Sonko, king of Niumi hired 700 Serahule soldiers to maintain order in his state in the 1840s. The lesson is that Serer, Serahule, Jola, Fula, Mandinka and Wolof language groupings could be found in the place we now call The Gambia at various periods during the pre-colonial times. Some of these language groups had kings who established different states. There were no big Mandinka, Wollof, Fula, Jola, Serer, Serahule speaking kingdoms which involved only the members of each language grouping. Fulas, Serahules, etc, could be found in settlements where the predominant language was mandinka.
