Unfortunately, Garfield's rags-to-riches story came to an abrupt end when a disgruntled Republican supporter, Charles Guiteau, shot Garfield twice on July 2, 1881. Garfield lingered on through the summer and died in Elberon, New Jersey on September 19, 1881. His vice president, Chester A. Arthur , was sworn in as president at 2 a. m. on September 20, 1881.

The historic Miami-Erie Canal in western Ohio once was an important inland waterway connecting the Great Lakes to the Ohio River between Toledo and Cincinnati. It was an inland waterway that attracted a great deal of shipments of goods and supplies during the early 1800s soon after Ohio achieved statehood. As Ohio's inland canal system was being constructed during the first half of the 19th century to link the Great Lakes with the Ohio River, construction began in 1837 for a feeder reservoir in Auglaize and Mercer counties that would serve as a turn-around location for shipping along the Miami-Erie Canal. Workers, mostly German and Irish immigrants, used mules, wooden scoops and other tools to dig by hand what today is the 13,500-acre Grand Lake St. Marys in northwest Ohio. At the time of its completion and birth as an inland reservoir in 1845, Grand Lake St. Marys was the largest man-made lake in the world. Grand Lake was connected to the Miami-Erie Canal by a three-mile feeder canal. This waterway system and other canal systems within Ohio only flourished commercially for a short time as railroads became established in the mid-19th century. Railroad development sounded the death knell of the Canal era. As commercial boating activities on the canals and feeder reservoirs diminished, recreational boating on lakes such as Grand Lake St. Marys increased.

Garfield was able to avert these accusations and finally the Republican party agreed to have him as their candidate. He won by a narrow margin of about 10,000 popular votes, although he won the electoral vote 214-155. Garfield's primary political opponent was General Winfield Scott Hancock (Democrat).

Extractions: For only the second time in our country's history, the son of a former president has himself been elected president. Is there something in the presidential gene pool that propels the sons of chief executives into the political fray? Or is it just the learning experiences, connections, and family name that give them an advantage? More of the latter than the former, probably, but surprisingly few presidential "sons of fortune" toss their hat into the political ring. Of almost 90 boys born to presidents, we've found only 18 that have held political office. (The list below may not be complete, but should be pretty close! Extractions: Chester Alan Arthur (1829-1886), 21st President Of The United States. He is remembered as the political spoilsman who surprised his country with an honest administration. Arthur supported and signed into law the reform Civil Service Act of 1883, which established a merit system of appointment to federal employment. At the Republican National Convention of 1880, Conkling's "stalwart" faction (which took the name by contrasting their own "stalwart" Republicanism with that of the reform elements in the party) supported former president Grant's nomination for a third term. Arthur was one of the 306 "stalwart" delegates who voted for Grant until the last ballot. However, the convention choice for president was James A. Garfield. To conciliate the defeated stalwarts, Arthur was suggested for the Vice Presidency. Conkling told him: "If you wish for my favor and my respect you will contemptuously decline it [the nomination]." But Arthur replied: "Senator Conkling, I shall accept the nomination and I shall carry with me the majority of the delegation." And he did. After the election of the Garfield-Arthur ticket, the issue of the New York patronage flared up again. Conkling expected the new president to consult him on all federal patronage in New York state, and in this demand Arthur backed the senator, his old boss. When President Garfield stubbornly refused, both New York senatorsConkling and Thomas Plattresigned their seats, mistakenly anticipating speedy reelection by the legislature. Meanwhile, a deranged office seeker, Charles J. Guiteau, shot President Garfield on July 2, 1881, exclaiming, "I am a Stalwart of the Stalwarts ... Arthur is president now."

Extractions: Article 4 THE US PRESIDENTS (AND THEIR VICES) AND CHESS by Robert John McCrary Chess in the White House has not gotten as much press as the other "games" played there, especially recently. Yet about 20% of US presidents are known to this author as having played chess, and there may be more. At least one president was considered to be a good player, and there were at least two administrations in which both president and vice-president played. Perhaps the most interesting episode involving a US President occurred around September 1885, when both the US president and vice-president visited a chess event together! The incident was described as follows in the September 1885 issue of The International Chess Magazine "Ajeeb, 'The Chess Automaton', is now giving exhibitions at Eden Musee, Twenty-third Street, New York. We learn from the Evening Telegram that President Cleveland and Vice-President Hendricks paid a visit recently to Ajeeb's chess room, and the latter had a game with the figure which 'The Automaton' finished with a neat five-move version of the so-called Philidor's Legacy or smothered mate." Unfortunately, we do not know who the hidden player inside Ajeeb was on that occasion, but Albert Hodges, a one-time claimant to the US championship, was one of its secret operators. Sadly, vice-president Hendricks died in office only two months after losing that game. President Cleveland went on in 1888 to become the only president to win the popular vote while losing in the electoral college. He then became the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms when he avenged his 1888 defeat in the 1892 election.
