Extractions: Popular culture offers little out-of-school support for children's mathematical learning, with one potential exceptioncomputer games. While many of the more recent games purport to be"educational", and to "promote children's mathematical learning", there is little research to support these claims. How do children learn significant mathematics from computer games? What are the characteristics of games, and of game-playing contexts, that interact with learning? Why are the children who play electronic games predominantly male? How might we understand and address this out-of- school inequity in girls'and boys' exposure to technology and mathematics? This project will examine the intersection of gaming, mathematics knowledge, and gender, with particular attention to differences in the ways girls and boys engage in computer games that involve mathematical thinking. The eventual goal of the project is to understand enough about the interactions among these three fields to influence the design of computer games so that they will be at least as appealing to girls as to boys.

For example, McAuliffe (1994) and Kamler (1993) found that the portrayal of characters in children's writing often reflects gender stereotypes. In addition, individual beliefs about the dominance or subordination of particular genders frequently determine whose ideas are heard or ignored in student discussions (Evans, 1996), and unfacilitated group discussions may therefore reinforce gender stereotypes among students (Alvermann et al., 1996a). Thus, without some intervention, unstructured language-learning situations may actually encourage children to reproduce gender stereotypes (Purcell-Gates, 1993). What is the role of the teacher in addressing such problems? The literature suggests that teachers have differing views of the position they should take in this matter. The different positions reflect individual beliefs about gender roles and about the role that teachers should play in children's lives. This Digest provides an overview of various perspectives on the teacher's role in addressing gender-related issues in the classroom.

In the past, USAID/Armenia took advantage of opportunities when they presented themselves to address gender issues. In 2000, USAID/Armenia took a closer look at our programming and began to build a systematic approach to gender issues in Armenia. The following report outlines areas in which USAID will focus its efforts in the coming years to ensure gender integration in our programs and to promote women's leadership and equality. B. Background The economic and political turmoil experienced by Armenia in recent years has had a significant impact on the country. For example, per capita income fell from approximately $2,500 in 1991 to $500 in 1998; official unemployment increased threefold from 1992-1997; and more than half the population now lives below the poverty line, and approximately one quarter lives below the food line. Maternal mortality is double the WHO target for Europe and abortion rates increased from 31.6 per 100 live births in 1990 to 65.1 per 100 in 1996. A recent World Bank report suggests that Armenia's poor typically experience periods of malnutrition, have insufficient heating in winter months, and have less access to educational and health services than before the fall of the Soviet Union.

Despite economic growth in the region, more than 800 million people live in poverty, accounting for two-thirds of the poor in the entire developing world. Seventy percent of the poor are reported to be women and, increasingly, they are heads of households. ANE OVERVIEW USAID recognizes that the ANE region has some of the least empowered women and the greatest gaps between genders in the world, circumstances that significantly constrain development. As a result, one of USAID's strategic priorities in the region is to reduce gender disparities and thereby improve development impact. Two Approaches to Gender: Gender-Integrated or Gender-Led: USAID follows either a gender-integrated strategy or a gender-led approach to development. The first is the mainstream approach; the second focuses explicitly on directing resources toward combating gender-based constraints which pose obstacles to development.

Extractions: The Gender Issues Network or GENNET has been active from 1991 to 1997. It produced a brochure with information about the meaning of gender and a gender approach in the water sector, references and some hints for application (electronic copies still available from IRC), two sourcebooks, two reports on gender and the work of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council and four newsletters. It also developed a very rapid (10 minutes) participatory gender analysis tool which became very popular to create awareness and basic understanding of gender issues and their importance for the water sector during larger gatherings. This has also been translated into other languages. This tool is still available from IRC. GENNET was discontinued in 1998 when the envisaged support through the WSSCC did not materialise. It has been replaced by the Gender and Water Alliance, which is active across the whole water sector: water for food (irrigation), water for nature (land and water use) and water and sanitation for people. The Gender and Water Alliance was created during the 2nd World Water Forum as a result of gender mainstreaming being placed high on the agenda of the water sector. The Gender and Water Alliance was launched to help implement water visions. A total of 110 organisations are presently members (including members of GENNET) with IRC acting as the secretariat for the alliance. In view of synergies established at the Fourm and the international recognition received for the alliance, it has been suggested that alliance now be responsbile for mainstreaming gender within the Council's activities. This would allow coordination to be continued by IRC.

Extractions: The period since the Second World War has seen major changes in patterns of industrial employment around the world. The manufacturing sector in Western Europe and North America has declined in terms of employment. Industrial development in the 'Third World' has been variable, the rapid transformation of the so-called newly industrializing countries contrasting with the far more modest industrialization rates of Africa. National boundaries have become increasingly permeable to transnational capital and a new international division of labour has been established. This bibliography has been produced using a bibliographic database developed by the authors as a research tool, and each reference includes a summary of the research as well as keywords associated with it. The characteristics of the database, in particular the keywords developed during the research, are discussed in the following section. Dr Caroline Wright, a lecturer in the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender at the University of Warwick, has research interests in gender and industrialization in southern Africa and, more generally, in the relationships between gender relations and macroeconomic change.
