References General Geology Summary of Stratigraphy The classification and nomenclature of the rock units described in this report have been adopted by the State Geological Survey of Kansas. They differ somewhat from the usage adopted by the U.S. Geological Survey. The rocks that crop out in Sumner County are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Paleozoic to Recent (Pl. 1). The oldest rocks are a part of the Wellington Formation of the Leonardian Stage, Permian System. The Wellington Formation forms the bedrock surface in approximately the eastern two-thirds of the county and crops out in local areas where it is not covered by Pleistocene deposits. The Ninnescah Shale, also of the Leonardian Stage, forms the bedrock surface in approximately the western third of the county and crops out in local areas where it is not covered by Pleistocene deposits. Cenozoic deposits of the Pleistocene Series representing four glacial stages and possibly the interglacial stages occur in Sumner County. Deposits of Nebraskan-Aftonian age underlie the surface in the northwestern part of the county near Conway Springs. Deposits of Kansan-Yarmouthian age are most extensive in the eastern and southern parts of the county. Illinoisan-Sangamonian and Wisconsinan terrace deposits border most of the major streams of the county, and Recent deposits form the flood plains and occur also as sand dunes. Deposits of the interglacial stages were not recognized, however, and therefore in this report the deposits referred to a glacial stage include those of the subsequent interglacial stage if present. Deposits of Kansan and Illinoisan age are mapped together on Plate 1.

Extractions: The Geological Sciences include the study of the solid earth, the hydrosphere, and the atmosphere. Within the broad field of Geological Science students may elect to take coursework leading to professional careers in such areas as geohydrology, environmental geology, urban geology, engineering geology, petroleum geology, mineral exploration and government service. The degree programs also prepare students for academic careers in schools or universities, although additional work is usually required for such careers. All Earth Science and Geology majors must contact the department office to obtain a departmental advisor prior to the first semester in residence. The Geological Sciences Department participates in the interdisciplinary Center for Ocean Science Studies. See the Ocean Science Studies section of the current Catalog for additional information. Concurrent and/or Summer Enrollment in Another College Students who wish to take course work in a community or another college to meet curricular requirements while enrolled as undergraduates in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics must petition the appropriate department for prior approval to enroll in specific courses. This policy is for either concurrent enrollment or summer enrollment. University policy must also be complied with. See 'Concurrent Enrollment' and 'Transfer of Undergraduate Credit' in the current Catalog. Courses not receiving prior approval will not be accepted for credit by the department.

Extractions: A variety of rocks are exposed in the Duluth area. They range in age from the 1.8 to 1.9 billion old Thomson Formation to the 800 m.y. old sedimentary rocks of the Fond du Lac Formation . Volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the North Shore Volcanic Group were formed from the Mid-Continental Rift system about 1.1 billion years ago. The main groups of rocks in Northern Minnesota include: 4) Sedimentary basin infill of the Fond du Lac formation exposed at Fond du Lac in the vicinity of Mission Creek. The Keweenawan (upper Precambrian) lavas in the Superior region were deposited at different times in overlapping accumulation. There are 100's of lava flows. The North Shore Volcanic Group is 6000-9000 meters thick ( Picture 3 ). The lowest (oldest) basalts are exposed at two ends. One is near Duluth and the other is near Grand Portage (
