For those who have a very small area, a few plants can produce some fresh vegetables for your family. When a choice of locations is available for your garden, there are several things that you need to consider to be assured that you choose the best possible site. First consideration, most vegetables need full sun to do their best; therefore the area chosen should have full sun or as nearly possible. A few of the leafy vegetables will do all right in partial shade, but they will do better in full sun. Early morning sun is important to dry dew from the leaves as soon as possible. The second consideration is nearness to the house. The selected site should be near the house so that it can be observed frequently for insect, disease, and weed problems. The soil type is also very important. The soil type should be fertile, easily worked without leaving a lot of clods and it should be well-drained. Well-drained means that after heavy rains the excess water will drain out of the soil and not keep the area soggy. The area should also be free of nut grass, Bermuda grass and other weeds and grasses that are difficult to control. The size of the garden may be predetermined by the amount of land available and the amount of time you have to spend in it.

Active For Life Series Program "Active For Life" is designed as a comprehensive proactive health education program for older adults; however, the main focus of the program is a low-to-moderate-intensity exercise program. The aerobic component of the program is walking. The program was piloted by the West Virginia University Extension Service with 250 adults between the ages of 50 and 95 at 16 locations in both rural and communities. Although its primary component is exercise for flexibility and strength, the program addresses other needs of older adults, such as social, intellectual, related, emotional or spiritual ones. The unique feature of this program is the involvement of peer volunteer leaders. This allows for a greater number of older adults to participate in a community-based preventive health education program. Program materials include a resource guide, an exercise manual, and a video of the program participants in action. Before conducting this program, you must have gone through the inservice training held on May 14, 1997 or have watched the video of that inservice training. The MWR BOD standard for FY02 is 17.0 percent NIBD. Major factors affecting program performance is installation access for off-post patrons due to events of September 11. Force protection measures resulted in a negative variance or approximately $745K from the similar period the previous year. Greens fees were down over $989K from the similar period last year and more than account for the negative NIBD variance. · Membership in National Golf Course Owners Association. All Army golf courses are now members in the NGCOA through a centrally funded membership by CFSC. The membership in this organization provides yet another buying opportunity for golf managers to compare prices for course needs to further enhance our capability to reduce costs while maintaining quality. Fitzgerald The Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) in Philadelphia, PA, is the largest inventory control point in the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The DPSC dates to the 1800s when it was known as the Schuylkill Arsenal. At that time it served as a warehouse and distribution hub for supplies, ammunition and handmade uniforms for the US Army. Early history of the arsenal covers a wide variety of experiences. One of the arsenal's first and most interesting endeavors was the preparation for the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803. Captain Meriweather Lewis assembled a unique collection of mathematical instruments, weapons, medicine, clothing and gifts valued at $2,160.14 in the arsenal's warehouses for his expedition. The Schuylkill Arsenal also responded to national tragedies. In 1875 the arsenal issued clothing and bedding to people left destitute on the western frontier because their crops had been destroyed by hordes of grasshoppers. Four years later the arsenal sent 1,000 tents to Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana for yellow fever victims. During the Spanish-American War, over half of the uniforms were supplied by the arsenal. In 1941, just as the United States was becoming involved in World War II, the arsenal experienced tremendous expansion. Additions included new warehouses, a clothing factory and the current headquarters building. The arsenal, renamed the Defense Personnel Support Center, assumed its present form in 1965 when the Defense Subsistence Supply Center of Chicago and the Defense Medical Supply Center of Brooklyn, NY, consolidated with the Clothing and Textiles Supply Center of Philadelphia.

The agreement forged by the states and federal government effectively creates an economy of scale which should reduce EBT administrative costs and enable benefit portability across state lines. The emerging system could also set the basic ground rules that other states may have to follow when implementing their own EBT program. The agreement to pursue a joint contract was signed by Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida and Missouri, which form a group known as the Southern Alliance of States. SAS members are preparing to implement EBT - a relatively new way to deliver program benefits including Food Stamps and Aid to Families with Dependent Children - to clients who will use a debit card to receive benefits from a grocery store debit card reader or automatic teller machine. "SAS is a prototype for nationwide EBT, and a prototype for organizational relationships," said Jack Radzikowski, executive director of the federal EBT Task Force which coordinated most of the federal activity leading to the agreement. When dealing with a group rather than individuals, he said, "it takes longer to get an agreement. But what we're buying is worth more because there is more of a guarantee of interoperability."

These and other factors have increased the popularity and number of master of science programs in scientific and technical communication in the United States. A few M.S. programs have been around for a long time: the M.S. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, for example, began in 1953. Others, such as the one at the University of Minnesota, started about 10 years ago with just a few graduates every year; it is now putting out about 10 a year. This is so much the case at Georgia Tech that its director, Peter McGuire, took pains to explain to me that rhetorical theory and other subjects are also central pillars of his program! This is undoubtedly true, yet the proportion of "theory versus application" offered by a program is a key to understanding the nature of the M.S. and the ways in which it differs from the M.A. in the same field (see chapter 3 of this book).
