Clarke-Oconee Genealogical Society Click here for more information. Oconee County, Georgia was formed from Clarke County in 1875. Much of the early history can be found in Clarke County . The county seat of Oconee County is Watkinsville, which was the original county seat of Clarke. The residents of Watkinsville objected to the county seat being moved to Athens in 1875. Hence, Oconee County was created. There is a historical marker located at the Oconee Co. Courthouse.

    Extractions: Project Stewart County, Georgia History In 1825, a portion of the territory ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Indian Springs, made in February 1825, between the United States and the Creek Indians, was made into Lee County. Three years later, in 1828, the County of Randolph was made from part of Lee County and had Lumpkin as its county seat. On December 23, 1830, Stewart County was formed from a portion of the Randolph territory which included Districts 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and portions of 31, 32 and 33. This included the city of Lumpkin which became the Stewart County seat. Later, portions of Stewart County went to form parts of Webster County, Quitman County, Marion County and Chattahoochee County. Stewart County was named for General Daniel Stewart, who was born October 20, 1759 in Saint Johns Parish, now Liberty County. General Stewart served in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He was the great-grandfather of President Theodore Roosevelt. He died in 1829.     Extractions: Project Randolph County, Georgia History Randolph is a county in the WSW part of Georgia and contains about 800 square miles. It was established by act of Congress on December 20, 1828 from Lee County. It was named for John Randolph (1773 - 1833), a Senator and Representative from Virginia for many years. Randolph County included all of Stewart and Quitman Counties and parts of Terrell and Clay Counties. Cuthbert was established and made the county seat in 1831. It was incorporated into a town in 1834. Indians were in this area until 1836 when they were driven out after the Creek Rebellion. Randolph county is rich in old homes, some dating back as far as 1837. There are roughly 34 homes built in the 1800s within the city limits of Cuthbert. The present courthouse was built in 1885. The original was a log fort building. By the late 1850s, Cuthbert was recognized as the educational center of Georgia because of the two women's colleges in its area, Andrew College and Baptist Female College of Southwest Georgia and a male academy. Andrew College is the second oldest in the US and in 1956 became co-ed. Railroads came to the area in the 1850s and it became a thriving agricultural center. Now, Randolph County focuses on industry, which prospers from its excellent transportation facilities. Also, because of its abundant water supply and mostly mild weather, agriculture flourishes.

    Extractions: Carroll County's History Named for Charles Carroll (1737-1832) of Maryland, an American patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Carroll County was created by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on December 11, 1826, from land previously claimed by the Creek Indian tribe. The County's first elections were held in May, 1827. The original county boundaries formed a rough triangle, beginning in the south at the point where the Chattahoochee River turns northeast from the Alabama line, then following the state line on the west and the river on the east to the Cherokee-Creek Boundary Trail, some 100 miles to the north. Much of this original land now forms parts of Haralson, Douglas, Heard and Troup Counties. Carroll County's land was distributed in a lottery held in Milledgeville, then the state capital, in 1827. Those winning the allotments paid a grant fee of $18.00 per land lot of 202½ acres. The county's first towns, Carrollton and Hixtown (now Villa Rica,) were incorporated in 1829 and 1830, respectively. Despite frequent rumors of impending Indian attack throughout the early years, there were remarkably few serious incidents and, for the most part, the residents got on with the business of providing for their own needs, and building an infrastructure. By 1840, most of the Indians in the area had been forcibly relocated to present-day Oklahoma, at the cost of many lives.

    Extractions: Whitfield County was formed in 1851 from part of Murray County which lies on it's eastern boundary. Whitfield County lies in northwestern Georgia and is bordered by the Tennessee state line on it's northern side and by Catoosa, Walker, Gordon and Murray Counties, counterclockwise, on it's other boundaries. Whitfield, Georgia's 97th county was named after Reverend George Whitefield, an early settler of Georgia and the founder of the Bethesda Orphan House in Savannah. The spelling of the county name was later changed to reflect the way it was pronounced.

She was the daughter of Mathew Howard Moore b:1872 d:1944 and Rebecca Jane Sweat b:1873 d:1950. Mathew was the son of John Moore, V and Barbara Roberts . Bessie married George Baxter McMahan in Seminole County, Florida. Mrs. Bessie Moore McMahan died June 1957 and was laid to rest in the LaGrange Cemetery in Titusville, Brevard County, Florida. WY Search Now: Georgia was orginally chartered by King George II of England as a refuge for the homeless and debtors of London in 1732 at the behest of General James Oglethorpe after a friend of Oglethorpe died in debtor's prison. Shortly after, German-speaking Salzburgers settled in what is now Effingham County. Georgia lost its charter and became a crown colony in 1752 and in January 1788 became the fourth state (and the first southern state) to join the union. Originally much larger than its current size, Georgia gave up the land west of the Chattahoochee River in 1802 to help form the territories of Alabama and Mississippi. Georgia became a popular spot for settlers seeking land at little cost, and had land lotteries as early as 1805. In 1861 it seceded from the Union and was the scene of many bloody battles during the Civil War. It was readmitted in 1870.
