Extractions: Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum) The distribution of the species' ranges are the southwestern U.S. and the western coast of Mexico. The U.S. species is Heloderma suspectum Heloderma suspectum inhabits arid to semi arid deserts. Its body is heavily built and cylindrical in shape. Its head is broad and flat with a blunt round nose. Its tail is thick and round. Its scales are very beadlike on its back, sides, head, and tail. It is black and "pinkish" in color. Heloderma suspectum and Heloderma horridum are the only known venomous lizards. The venom glands are located at the posterior edge of the lower jaw. The venom reaches the teeth via a groove between the jaw and lip. The fangs are grooved in the front and, usually, also toward the back. Some upper jaw teeth also have grooves. The teeth are located deep in the gums. The gums are pushed back during a bite. This enables the teeth to penetrate 9-10mm deep into the target. The lizards must chew as they bite in order to inject the venom. The venom affects mainly the central nervous system. The venom can paralyze the respiratory system and, in this way, be lethal. In the wild, these lizards escape the worst of the desert heat by remaining in their burrows during the day. At dusk and part of the night they may be seen in bushy areas or crossing highways. As they crawl, they constantly flick out their forked tongue to pick up scents. The lizard will transmit the scents with its tongue to paired orifices in the roof of its mouth. The scents are used to identify food.

Habitat The Gila monster is most commonly found in mountain foothills dominated by saguaros and palo verde trees. It also uses washes that extend down into valleys. It may use burrows dug by other animals, or construct burrows of its own. Life History Comments Gila monsters are one of only two venomous lizards known to occur in the world. The other, the beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum), is found in southern Sonora and further south in thornscrub and tropical deciduous forest. Venom is produced in glands in the lower jaw and expressed along grooved teeth as the animal bites. Once the lizard bites, it generally holds on and chews more of the venom into its victim. Though the bite is rarely life-threatening to humans, it may cause pain, edema, bleeding, nausea and vomiting. A Gila monsters venom is believed to be a defensive weapon. The animal probably does not need venom to subdue its defenseless prey and the intense pain caused by the venom readily causes a predator to change its mind. Before biting, the lizard will hiss, gape, and back away from its would-be attacker. If these efforts fail, it will bite with amazing speed. Gila monsters should not be handled!

Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts of extreme southwestern Utah, southern Nevada, southeastern California, western Arizona and southwestern New Mexico into Mexico. Desert and semiarid regions of gravelly and sandy soils with shrubs. Found under rocks, in burrows of other animals and in holes it digs itself. The Gila Monster's family name was derived from the Greek word helos, which means decorative stud and derma means skin. The common name, Gila Monster, is derived from the Gila River Basin in Arizona, where the Gila Monster is found. It is found throughout he southwestern United States and northern Mexico. There are two types of the Gila Monster, the Banded Gila Monster and the Reticulates Gila Monster. The Gila Monster grows to about 20 inches in length, has beadlike scales and black and pink bands or splotches. It typically weights three to five pounds. Behavior: The Gila is pink with yellow and black shading. Their tail has four to five bands on it. The Gila Monster has a distinctive rounded head, orange and pink beaded body and an extraordinarily thick tail. Their legs are short and they have very strong claws. This animal has five toes on each foot. Their lower jaw is incredibly powerful and contains the venom glands. Diet: The Gila's favorite food is eggs, which are most abundant in the spring; hence the Gila Monster is most active during the spring time. Although, they love eggs they also eat nesting birds, rodents, small rabbits and squirrels, and lizards. Basically, they eat just about anything that they can find on the ground. Gila Monsters are also known to feed on the eggs of a federally threatened species, the desert tortoise. An adult Gila Monster is capable of eating 35 percent of their body weight and young Gila's can devour as much as 50 percent of their body weight.

Extractions: My Gila Monster Research I have worked on the ecology, physiology, and behavior of helodermatid lizards in a variety of habitats from the Mojave desert of southwestern Utah to tropical dry forests of western Mexico. In the southwest, I am continuing a long term study of the Gila monster in the Chihuahuan desert of New Mexico with my colleague, Randy Jennings of Western New Mexico University. We are using miniature dataloggers and radio transmitters to explore the behavioral and physiological consequences of refuge-site selection by these ancient, venomous lizards. I am also working with two other colleagues, Charles H. Lowe and Brent Martin, on writing a book about Gila monsters and beaded lizards.
