It is also spoken around the world in the diaspora of Greeks who have emigrated for political or, far more commonly, economic reasons to the USA, Australia, Britain and elsewhere. Extractions: and Help with Pronunciation THE NEED TO READ GREEK The texts we will read in this class were not written in English (a language which did not exist at the time these texts were written). Except for the texts on Stoicism (written in Latin), all of the texts were written in Ancient Greek (which is actually rather different from Modern Greek). Because translation always involves interpretation, we will find that a word in the original text may have several possible meanings which a translator does not report to us. It is important, then, that we be able to read and consider some of their most important terms these philosophers use as they originally wrote them in Greek I do not expect you to learn Greek for this course. All I ask of you is that you learn how to pronounce Greek words and that you begin to develop a small vocabulary of important Greek philosophical terms. This web page has information concerning pronunciation of Greek. Please use it as a reference for the development of your reading skills. I will also introduce over the course of the semester different facets of Greek language. In particular, Greek is a highly inflected language this means that words have roots which take different endings depending upon the work they do in a sentence. (This is not unheard of in English: consider, for instance how "goose," "geese," and "gosling" are all related. In English this kind of inflection is most common still in our pronouns, as for example, the pronoun "I" is used as a subject and "me" is used for the object, though they both have the same referent.) Also, Greek has many verb forms.

Although we are not able to define precisely its age, it is without any doubt far more ancient than what we were taught at school. We must not ignore the fact that at the early times the only expression of the Greek language was taking place orally. The Greeks by being sea people "ðïëëá÷Þ êáôÜ èÜëëáôôáí ðëáíþìåíïé, ãëþôôáí ôçí åëëçíéêÞí åðÝâáëïí", they imposed the Greek language. It is well known that over time the acoustic sounds tend to become short and loud.
