NCAA Championships The University of Georgia established women's gymnastics as a varsity sport and named Melinda Airhart as its first head coach. In her first year as head coach, Suzanne Yoculan led Georgia to a 27-13 record and its first berth in the NCAA Championships, where the Gym Dogs placed ninth. Freshman Lucy Wener became Georgia's first individual national champion with her triumph on the uneven bars. She went on to win the same title in 1987 and 1989. Georgia captured its first national title by scoring 187.90 at the NCAA Championships. Earlier that season, Lucy Wener earned the program's first 10.00 with a perfect mark on the uneven bars.

Extractions: GYMNASTICS Gymnastics, with its history of 4000 years, is one of the most ancient sports in history. A man by the name of Monsieur Moiroux was the first person to bring about modern gymnastics to Turkey at the end of the 19th century. Mazhar Kazanci Bey (a gymnastics teacher in military academies), Mehmet Ali Fetgeri (one of Besiktas JK's founders), and Monsieur Moiroux who later became a valuable member of Besiktas Club were the first to start a gymnastics program at Besiktas JK. Gymnastics quickly became the primary sport thanks to these extraordinary gentlemen. Besiktas JK was the first club in Turkey to hold actual organized gymnastics' event as a team sport and as an individual competition. Between 1910 and 1924, in various competitions, Mazhar Hoca, Selim Sirri, and Ali Rana (Tarhan's) were the number one athletes in the branch of Swedish Gymnastics, as well as Mehmet Ali Fetgeri in the category of uneven and parallel bars. During the same era, many championships were won in the parallel and uneven bars category by Arap Salim, Ali Riza, as well as in the parallel bars and rings categories by Sadik Bey. One must also distinguish the talents of Besiktas' athletes such as Abbas Sakarya and Esat Sadi Kazanci. Unfortunately, after Atilla Bilgutay's domination of the sport in the years of 1950-55, Besiktas Gymnastics branch became lackluster. At the present, this branch is inactive.

Extractions: Congratulations to all of the competitors at the Rhythmic National Championships and especially to our Senior and Junior National Champions, Natalie Lacuesta and Heilie Isaacs. It was an excellent competition at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Six groups entered this Championships with the group from AIRGC named as Senior Champions and Illinois Rhythmics group named as Junior Champions. Earlier this spring, the group from Rhythmflex Gymnastics, coached by Catherine Yakhimovich, was awarded the right at the Trials to represent the United States at the Group World Gymnastics Championships in Seville, Spain. This was the first time the United States has sent a club-based group to a World Championships. The group did a very nice job representing us and really showed how far we are coming with the development of group rhythmic gymnastics in our country. The Men's National Team spent a week training at China's National Training Institute in Beijing. This was the first time any foreign team has been permitted to train at this Center. The friendship we have developed with the Chinese Gymnastics Association through the International Team Championships and the Visa American Cup helped to secure this prestigious invitation for the Team. The men gained a lot from training with the World Champions, ate scorpions and had a thoroughly wonderful time with their Chinese hosts! Thanks to all the clubs and gymnasts who, over the years, have helped host the Chinese teams in the United States.

Extractions: Two years after the first student enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, David C. Hall, a former Brown University gymnast, came to the campus to teach physical education. Hall would become Oklahoma's first gymnastics coach. Few formal records remain, but Hall's program lasted 15 years. Sooner yearbooks from 1902-1917 feature faded pictures of young men who were members of Hall's "Gymnasium Squads." In 1965 Ken Farris, then an associate athlete director, journeyed to the NCAA National Championships in hopes of re-establishing gymnastics at Oklahoma. Soon after, Russ Porterfield, a former University of Iowa gymnast, was hired as the Sooners' first competitive gymnastics coach. Porterfield's program sprung from beginnings almost as humble as Hall's efforts in the early 1900s. Later, Porterfield would admit he had to beg students to try out for OU's debut 1966 season and the squad finished last in its Big Eight debut. But Porterfield persisted, and in 1971 the Sooners notched their first winning season. (Since then OU has had only two sub-.500 years.) When he departed in 1973, Porterfield had given OU its first national champ in Odess Lovin, who won floor titles in 1972 and '73. Porterfield's successor was Illinois native Paul Ziert, a successful high school coach. Ziert turned Oklahoma gymnastics into one of the nation's most respected programs. His early teams were led by Illinois State transfer Greg Buwick, a two-time conference floor champ. Buwick would stay on at OU as Ziert's assistant and eventually become the Sooners' third head coach.

Extractions: April 4, 2001 The University of Oklahoma added women's gymnastics to its athletic roster in 1981, at the encouragement of men's coach Paul Ziert. Ziert served as head coach for both programs until he left OU in 1984. Already a prolific men's coach, Ziert amassed a 23-10 record in his three seasons as the women's head coach. The '84 season marked former assistant Becky Switzer's first at the helm for the Sooners. That same year Oklahoma won the team's first Big Eight conference title, a feat OU went on to repeat in 1985, 1986, 1991 and 1993. In 1985 the Sooners qualified to the NCAA National Championships for the first time as a team. They finished 10th at the NCAA meet, where Amy Priest became Oklahoma's first female All-American thanks to a second-place vault finish. In 1987 OU hit the big time with its first NCAA national champion when Kelly Garrison won the first of two consecutive all-around crowns. (Garrison also finished eighth on beam in those championships.) Also adding her name to the record books in '87 was Cassie Frey (who would go on to coach 2000 Olympian Tasha Schwikert). Frey finished seventh in the all-around and fifth on uneven bars at the NCAA.

North Harbour Gymnastics Centre (Inc.) is the product of nearly 40 years of gymnastics development on the North Shore. In 1987 the Centre was established as an amalgamation of the North Shore Gymnastics Club, East Coast Bays Gymnastics Club, Birkenhead Gymnastics Club and North Shore YMCA Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. The Centre was able to operate from one venue (apart from rhythmic) in 1990 when vacant commercial premises were obtained in Kaimahi Place, Wairau Valley. In 1991 a move was made to Cherry Lane off Porana Road. The final move was made in August 1992 when the North Shore City Council completed the new stadium known as the North Shore Events Centre and Gymnastics Centre . Since 1992 the Centre has grown from strength to strength. It is the largest gymnastics club in the Auckland area and is the almost exclusive provider of gymnastics services on the North Shore. The Centre is run by a board , assisted by parent support committees for both rhythmic and artistic and full time coaching staff who look after the
