4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful resource
This review is definitely worth using to prepare for the GI boards. It is as well organized and comprehensive as any one source could be. I found it very useful and even answered questions that I remembered reviewing exactly from this book. However, I would recommend a supplementary review source as well, especially for color plates of histology andexamples of esophageal manometry and pH monitor readings etc. Overall, a good source.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is all you need
I can't tell you how valuable this single resource is. The text is imminently readable and the info is right on the money. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of confusing resources until I locked on to this book. Using it alone, with no other study aid, I passed the boards. I strongly recommend this book to anyone taking the GI boards or the recert exam. Tremendously helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great office "partner"
As a solo general surgeon just out of residency, I have found this text very helpful in constructing DDx and planning Tx. 5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!
This book is an amazing little fountain of knowledge to have at your fingertips during clerkship year.I only discovered the Little Black Book series as a fourth year med student, and I so wish I had known about them earlier. They would have saved me a lot of time and made coming up with differentials, workup, etc. MUCH easier.

The book starts out with presenting GI symptoms, then goes through each part of the GI system: esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, etc. -- detailing every conceivable problem in an extremely clear, consise way.For each disease you get the cause, epidemiolgy, pathophysiology, symptoms, course, complications, DIFFERENTIAL (this is key!!!), lab & radiographic findings, workup, and treatment.Complete with references.

The whole book is so well-written and easy to use.I can't say enough good things about it.Best of all - IT FITS IN YOUR WHITE COAT POCKET.It is perfect to just carry with you and read when you're standing around doing nothing in the hospital -- or peek into quickly just before rounds when you have to present a patient and need some fast help. This book has it all -- thanks, Dr. Hay!

The whole series is a cut above the whole slew of review books out there. These are different -- it's like having the exact information from Up-to-Date that you need in your pocket.Well worth every cent. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall decent review
Have skimmed over this guide and it seems to have most of the essentials needed for the rotating resident/med student on a GI service. The approach to specific symptoms (part I) was very well done and has a lot of helpful information. The approach to specific diseases section (part II) was decent but I must say the section on small bowel disorders was extremely sparse and needs to be expanded. For example the author cites many things on the differential dx for small bowel malabsorbtion, but only celiac disease and short bowel syndrome are explained and these only in minimal depth. Would hope 2nd edition will add to this section. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am a third year resident looking towards a peds GI fellowship. This book contains much more than what is required by a peds. resident for thier GI rotation! The outline is easily accessible.I especially like the chapters on 'approach to ----protracted hypertransaminasemia",Liver transplant and Polyps in children to name a few.
Reading this book increased my fund of knowledge and consolidated my love for the field of pediatric gastroenterology.
Other larger text like Wyllie and Walker( two diff books) contain much more information. But if you need a book that is succinct, a quick/free flowing read and that delivers more than is needed for your peds GI rotation, then Dr Guandalini's book is preffered.
