Book Description
This work first defines sexual harassment, including operational, sociological and legal definitions, and then provides a history of the issue in the United States and a theoretical framework of why harassment occurs. Editorial Review

Book Description
This collection brings together leading feminist thinkers who examine the struggles for interpretive power which underlies international development.

  • Questions why the insights from years of feminist gender and development research are so often turned into ‘gender myths’ and ‘feminist fables’: women are more likely to care for the environment; are better at working together; are less corrupt; have a seemingly infinite capacity to survive
  • Explores how bowdlerized and impoverished representations of gender relations have simultaneously come to be embedded in development policy and practice
  • Traces the ways in which language and images of development are related to practice and provides a nuanced account of the politics of knowledge production
  • Argues that struggles for interpretive power are not only important for our own sake, but also for the implications they have for women’s lives worldwide
  • An informed analysis of how ‘gender’ has been transformed in its transfer into development policy and how many authors are now revisiting and reflecting on their earlier work

From the supplier: Dance has traditionally been dominated by females. As such, dance has been typified as a feminine activity and has limited male participation. Dance education should seek to correct these notions by tackling issues such as race, gender and other significant social themes. To do this, it should teach a broad range of dance genres and choose styles from different historical and cultural contexts.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is an attempt to bring the gender and development debate full circle—from a much-needed focus on empowering women to a more comprehensive gender framework that considers gender as a system that affects both women and men. The chapters in this book explore definitions of masculinity and male identities in a variety of social contexts, drawing from experiences in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. It draws on a slowly emerging realization that attaining the vision of gender equality will be difficult, if not impossible, without changing the ways in which masculinities are defined and acted upon. Although changing male gender norms will be a difficult and slow process, we must begin by understanding how versions of masculinities are defined and acted upon. ... Read more

The product description says the book "is an attempt to bring the gender and development debate full circle." The goal however is the core Orwellian feminist dream - controlling men, redefining their roles etc. Must be a very small circle. ... Read more

From the supplier: Greek goddess of the hearth, Hestia has been presented as the female challenge to the 'center' as represented by the phallus. However, there is little supporting documentation to support the humanised theory. Hestia may also be a symbolic representation of the sacred hearth without female or male associations. However, evidence suggests a connection between round shapes such as the omphalos and the female gender. The sacred hearth may represent an 'omphalo-centric' symbol as opposed to a phallocentric symbol.

From the supplier: Effective teaching of dance history should emphasize issues such as race, gender and class. Such issues, when integrated with actual dance practices, enable the students to see the relevant connections between dance and society. The issue of gender, in particular, should be stressed to develop critical thinking skills, to help develop independent viewpoints and to encourage the reading of dance history studies as supplementary aids to critical thinking.
