Editorial Review

Book Description
This book brings together the papers commissioned for a Pan-Commonwealth Expert Group Meeting on Gender and Human Rights which took place at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London in February 2004. These papers, together with other key background papers, represent much of the analysis and experience from Commonwealth member countries that informed the development of the Human Rights section of the new Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality 2005-2015.
The papers address a wide range of Gender and Human Rights issues, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), gender-based violence, culture and the law, indigenous peoples, trafficking and migration, land and property rights, diversity, and a life cycle approach to gender and human rights. The contributors include government policymakers, judges, lawyers, academics, representatives of civil society organizations, and specialists from multilateral agencies including the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The purpose of this book is to contribute to current policymaking, program planning and implementation on Gender and Human Rights. It is intended for a wide audience of policymakers, magistrates, judges and lawyers, academics, and civil society organizations grappling with these issues. It is also intended as a conceptual and policy-oriented resource for those committed to implementing and supporting the Human Rights goals of the new Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality 2005-2015. ... Book Description
This digital document is an article from Journal of Supply Chain Management, published by National Association of Purchasing Management, Inc. on June 22, 2004. From the author: While differences between male and female salespeople are well documented in the literature, evidence is less clear whether these differences matter to the buyer or whether buyers of different gender make decisions differently. The article reports results of a survey of male and female purchasers on the behaviors, trust, credibility and customer orientation of a salesperson. Almost no differences were found on any of the variables for male or female buyers. This calls into question past research that has found differences, and this paper argues that previous findings, while statistically significant, are probably not managerially significant.

Editorial Review

Book Description
This special issue brings together a diverse group of researchers to examine the state of gender research on educational achievement with a special emphasis on cultural variations. The primary focus is the educational experiences of students at the elementary and secondary levels where gender bias in school experiences can have a lasting effect on women's development. This issue examines how race, socioeconomic status, and other cultural influences combine with gender to shape those experiences.

The articles in this monograph highlight the need for future research in several areas including:

* the role of education in preparing women for their future economic roles,

* the creation of a developmental perspective due to the fact that both sex and ethnic group differences are more pronounced during adolescence than before,

* the influence of peers on students' achievement and motivation.

Given the magnitude of the concerns identified in each of the articles, it is essential that considerable thought be given to the general lack of attention devoted to both gender and ethnic group equity in teacher preparation programs in this country. Gender and ethnic group differences are also shaped by parents, mass media, economic constraints and opportunities, community values and resources, and larger cultural value systems. If there is to be a change in the opportunities and outcomes for the next generation of students, educators and researchers need to adopt a broader cultural perspective. The editors hope the research discussed in this volume will inform and contribute to such efforts.

From the supplier: Interpretation of the themes of critical/feminist pedagogy offers a blueprint for teacher education in a democracy. Critical pedagogy focuses on the political and value-oriented contexts of education practice, and questions the dominance of economic and dominant cultural formations concealing the instrumental connection of society and schools. Feminist pedagogy, on the other hand, opposes the patriarchal influence within and beyond the school setting.
