4-0 out of 5 stars Getting Started in Geneaogy Online
This book is an excellent book chuck full of valuble information of the lastest places to do genealogy research online for free. Also places to go for help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sparse information
This 64 page booklet has sparse information in the beginning about starting your online search. In the back there are a couple commonly used forms that appear in just about all of the genealogy books on the market. The majority of the book is a list of websites, many sorted by state. It might be a good book to have on your shelf to refer to from time to time when you are looking for a particular state website. Otherwise, this might be better ordered from your library through interlibrary loan. This is not a very useful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars No personal or community library Genealogy Reference collection can be considered complete or comprehensive without
A basic, 64-page `how to' introduction and instruction guide for using the internet in genealogical research by veteran genealogist William Dollarhide, "Getting Started In Genealogy Online" is particularly `user friendly' for beginning genealogists and anyone relatively unfamiliar with using the computer and the internet for tracing family trees online. Whether a novice needing to master the fundamentals of genealogy or a seasoned genealogist ready to take maximum advantage of what the internet has to offer as a research medium, "Getting Started In Genealogy Online" will prove an invaluable learning tool. Enhanced with a listing of American genealogy resources centers, forms that include a family data sheet, a pedigree chart, and a family group sheet, readers will learn how to start their online researches, as well as where to find more information as their research expands. No personal or community library Genealogy Reference collection can be considered complete or comprehensive without the inclusion of "Getting Started In Genealogy Online"! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Class!
If you are wondering how to get started on your own genealogy project, buy this book.It is full of practical advice, historical data, and references to resources. It has useful examples the documents you are looking for and guidance on where to find them.It has excellent information about the use of your computer and the internet in the ongoing search for ancestral records. Finally, this book has enough of the author's personal anecdotes and sense of humor to make it an enjoyable read.I wish I had found this book when the genealogy bug first bit me.It would have saved me a lot of the time I spent going back to county court houses for more records.

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO READ
A very attractive book - cover design, slick cover and general feel of it. I think the size of the book and text were great choices. It is easy to read. A lot of folks getting into genealogy are "seasoned" like me and appreciate that holding and reading it is effortless. There is also "meat" in this book. The author is honest, unpretentious and speaks from experience -- and lots of it. He shares his mistakes too! The reader will learn what works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Started in Genealogy
Genealogy has been my hobby since 1993 and after reading Mr. Bourland's book, my conclusion is that this is a "must have" book for the beginner to genealogy. He did an outstanding job of making the process easy to follow and the resulting work would be very organized and in readable form. His work takes away the fear of "where to begin?"Not only is this book a wonderful tool for the beginner, I found numerous resources contained in it that I didn't know about before - so it's a really worthwhile acquisition for the beginner and old-timer alike. ... The major reason to have a genealogy website is sharing and collaboration.A genealogy website reaches out to all those cousins and distant relatives. They will have specific knowledge, stories and even artifacts that have been passed down on their side of the family. These are the very people you must locate to begin the genealogy communication process. In this guide, we describe in detail how to create a genealogy website. We present a website development methodology which divides the website project into three phases:the requirements phase, the design phase and the build phase with explanations of the steps and products for each phase. We focus on the information structure of the genealogy website, the most important and neglected design task facing authors of genealogy websites. In this guide we will describe the development of the surname website, www.schmidt14.org of Margaret Schmidt.Margaret is a fictitious character but she is a composite of many genealogists we know. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars written in a UK point of view
I'm a US reference librarian who purchased this for my adult non-fiction collection. It's got solid instructions and directions.... but it's written from a UK point of view.Meaning that a lot of the websites used in the book are things like the UK Amazon, or especially in the section on auction sites, UK government auctions.Links for British newspapers.Examples are given in pounds. So forth.

As someone who has taught beginning computer classes geared towards seniors, a lot of the examples in here may be a bit frustrating for them -- especially for the travel sections linking to UK-centric travel sites that show someone how to pick flights from London to Malaga, with no US airports.

Again, the instructions in here are solid - browsing, searching, printing, social networking, etc.But if you're thinking of buying this for the US senior in your life, you may want to try something else. ... Read more
