This second volume of Mr. Maher's three-volume work was compiled in 1991 and indexes 97,000 death notices and 27,000 marriage notices--attesting to the Herald's extraordinary coverage of marriages and deaths. The extensive notices refer to people up and down the East Coast as well as to midwesterners and persons from as far west as the State of California. The index is divided into two sections--one for marriages and one for deaths--furnishing the names of brides and grooms (or the late deceased) and the exact date of issue of the newspaper. This is an index to 9,000 wills filed and probated in Alabama between 1808 and 1870. A project of the Alabama Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, it was originally compiled at the suggestion of the Department of Archives and History of the State of Alabama. The actual compilation was undertaken by a team of DAR chapter and state committees and is based on wills filed in the Department of Archives and History. The index itself is a model of simplicity, giving, in alphabetical order, the name of the testator, the county of probate, the identity of the record source (usually a will book), the date of the book, and the page number; in sum, all that the researcher might require in securing further information from the original records. ... This census index, in common with others prepared by Mrs. Bentley, is the standard reference tool on its subject--a work as thorough and as accurate as painstaking labor could make it. Where questions of interpretation occurred, for example, Mrs. Bentley compared her microfilm copy with a photostatic copy of the census, thus obtaining the best possible reading. The index itself consists of an alphabetical list of the heads of households in the 1800 federal census of Massachusetts. First the family name of the head of household is given, followed by the Christian name, then the county of residence, and finally the page number of the census schedule. The 305 pages of text contain data on some 70,000 persons, most of whom were of age during the Revolutionary War, many participating in it. (Researchers should note that the enumerations for Boston and Chelsea in Suffolk County are missing from the extant census returns, an omission which should be anticipated in the index.) ... This is an index to the 1820 census of Maryland and the District Columbia, in effect a complete register of 61,000 heads of household living in Maryland and Washington, D.C. at the time of the fourth census of the United States. The index is simplicity itself, with heads of households listed in alphabetical order, followed by a citation to the page number of the microfilm on which the original enumeration is found and a reference to the county of residence. For convenience, the names of Maryland and Washington heads of household are merged into a single alphabet, enabling the researcher to identify an individual while at the same time observing references to family members living in adjoining areas.
