3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, but quite dry
Ernest L. Abel's book on Jewish Genetic Disorders, is written from the common person, where he tries to explain which disorders show up disproportionally in the Jewish population. He has chapters divided by the organ systems the disease affects.Abel discusses such heartbreaking diseases like Tay-Sachs, and other more obscure diseases.Abel's writing is quite dry, but I read through it quick enough.3 stars ... Product Description
The sequencing of the human genome reveals our complete complement of genetic material. The sequenced human genome is one of the most international biomedical research projects ever, which is important in our current often all-too-fractured world. This book defines the function of all 'unknown' human genes, delineates the functional and phenotypic significance of human genetic variants in humans, and explores the functions of the vast non-genic regions of the human genome. Human genome sequencing has revealed a great opportunity to deeply investigate the biology and evolution of the sex chromosome pair at a more global level, allowing new frontiers in the genetics research, such as a detailed knowledge of the sequence and the gene content of these chromosomes. This book provides the most current research done in this area. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars thesis on genetic diseases
I gave the subject "famous people and genetic disorders" to one of my students for his thesis at the end of Pharmacy license. Strolling through internet with this key word, I saw this book an ordered it to Amazon.com. I did not understand why the book was written with big letters like a book for children, though its language and subjects were scientific enough. I find everything that I expected in the book and read it with great pleasure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Famous People and Genetic Disorders
I purchased this book on Amazon because it sounded interesting. Unfortunately there was not the option to peek inside the book before buying it, as it was adisappointment. For some reason the font used is huge although the description of the book said nothing about it being a large print book. It is 99 pages long, but would actually be more like 33 if the font were normal, and I read it in less than an hour. Going beyond the annoying font, the book is superficial in its treatment of these famous people and their genetic disorders. At one point I checked to be sure this wasn't actually written as a book for older children. Its almost as though the author had at one point written a school term paper on this subject, and decided to turn it into a book. I do not recommend this book at all. ... Read more

This book provides a comprehensive and readable primer on the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors in mental disorders. Rendering technical concepts accessible, and laying to rest common myths and oversimplifications, the book describes what (and how) scientists have learned about the causation and expression of such frequently encountered disorders as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and Alzheimer disease. Clinicians and students gain the basic knowledge they need to evaluate the literature in this rapidly developing field, understand implications for treatment, and communicate genetic information to clients and families. Throughout, special attention is given to the critical ethical and professional concerns raised by emerging technologies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
I'm still making my way through this book, but what I've seen so far has offered an interesting explanation of the mood disorders. To be sure, mood disorders are not entirely determined by genes - there are environmental factors to be considered as well, as twin studies have shown. However, suggestions that there are genes which can predispose individuals to mood and thought disorders is compelling; this explanation can provide an answer for many questions that pure environmental accounts cannot. It makes for a worthwhile read.

In reply to an earlier reviewer, I would note that the past month has seen announcements concerning potential marker genes for bipolar disorder and depression-triggers, lending some credence to the premise of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars How about some real evidence?
This is another in the long line of books and articles claiming that mental illnesses are largely genetic. This claim is made despite the fact that not a single gene has been found to be linked to a mental disorder (at least not one that wasn't refuted a few years later).I guess the idea is to put out a bunch of studies making claims and, by the time the studies are refuted, you can crank out some new ones.My favorite passage in this book goes as follows: "Recent linkage analysis studies have replicated initial reports of positivelinkage to chromosome 6 markers in families with schizophrenia.Although there are several negative studies, the evidenceimplicating the short arm of chromosome 6 is the strongest to date for schizophrenia.""Several negative studies"? That sounds quite uncompelling to me.If you are going to assert that mental illnesses are genetic and human beings can be reduced to genetic robots...

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, scholarly, but fully accessible for lay readers .
Students, clinicians and researchers who study the genetic roots of mental disease will find this an involving overview which provides a comprehensive introduction to psychiatric genetics. From the contributions of genes andenvironment to mental health to genetic predispositions and transmissionlinks, Genetics of Mental Disorders offers chapters which sound detailedand involved, but which can be absorbed by lay readers.

I'll sell this book ,I review it and then I can make about it ... Read more

Nowhere in the literature is there a book that reviews the rapidly developing field medical genetics from theories to its implications for clinical practice. Nathaniel Robin's book fills that void. Product Description
Certain disorders tend to occur in some ethnic groups more than others. In 2001, McFarland published the author’s Jewish Genetic Disorders ("superb guide…outstanding writing and well-organized text…current and comprehensive…exceptional"—Library Journal). This new work covers genetic disorders that have been noted to occur with relatively high frequency in Arab populations or that are unique to them. It begins with a discussion of the basic facts about genetics and genetic diseases, and who the Arab people are and why certain genetic disorders are more common in this population. The genetic disorders are then categorized as follows: blood, cardiovascular, central nervous system, connective tissue, endocrine system, metabolic, neuromuscular, respiratory, sensory, skeletal, and skin. For each category, the disorders are examined in terms of symptoms, frequency, cause, the occasional "Faustian Bargain," diagnosis, transmission, treatment, and prevention. References for more information are also provided. The book concludes with information on genetic counseling for Arab-Americans. ... Read more

Product Description
Hardbound. Over the past few years, there has been much research into, and subsequent advances in our understanding of, the genetic causes of psychiatric illness. Most neuropsychiatric diseases have a multifactorial background - both genetic and environmental factors are important for the development of the disease. The advantages of understanding the inherited component of a psychiatric disease are obviously great, and will eventually lead to more effective treatments. The chapters in this volume are specifically concerned with the latest advances in finding biological and genetic markers for psychiatric disorders. An emphasis is placed on common diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. However, for instance, monogenetic inherited diseases with psychiatric symptoms which can serve as models for the inheritance of psychiatric disorders are also discussed. For neuroscientists, geneticists, biological psychiatrists and all those with ... Read more
