5-0 out of 5 stars Better than its (non-existent) competition
After reading the other reviews I feared I was throwing my money away in buying a used copy of this 2nd edition. Wrong.

In the 1970s I created my own lab exercises for undergraduate structural geology. Having recently returned to teaching that course I wanted something better than those and didn't want to have to search for my three decades old notes. Searching the Internet, I quickly found this to be the only lab manual designed for a general undergraduate course in structural geology. I have now had two days to read this book and work through some of the problems. Six hours ago I contacted the publisher to order a desk copy, and the bookstore to order the book for a course beginning next month.

Four previous reviewers - apparently all students either taking or having recently completed the course - are less enthusiastic about the book than I. It is perhaps important that I point out how their objections look from the front of the classroom.

The primary objections of other reviewers are:
(1) Data required for many exercises is on different pages from the questions. That's true, but I don't know of any way to avoid that with any meaningful data set. If the student collected the data in the field it would probably occupy several pages in a field book, so the problem isn't unique to this book. Yes, it may be inconvenient, maybe even necessitating photocopying of the data to keep it in view along with the questions. I do not perceive this as a significant limitation simply because I can't think of an alternative.

(2) Two few problems. I sympathize with this reviewer - and I have the answer to his complaint. If a student is unsure of his competency after doing the exercises in the book he should write up a couple of good examples of his own. Doing so will engender a more sympathetic attitude toward the author. More importantly, the student who undertakes this activity will find the gain in understanding to make the effort well worth while. (I may have to revise my syllabus!)

(3) No solutions to the problems. This is a significant handicap for an individual who is teaching himself as was Erik Jensen. Math textbooks commonly have solutions to some of the problems in a section at the back of the book. This would work if this volume were expanded enough to include more examples - perhaps 4 examples of each problem type. This could be done by adding to the "main problem" in each chapter several problems in which the data is presented with little or no discussion. This would keep the volume at a reasonable size. Until this modification is made I'll create my own or perhaps my students will volunteer to do so.

(4) The book is weak in "areas that are of prime importance to geologists such as 3 point problems, thickness problems, out crop patterns, etc." I will not argue that these are not of importance to geologists, nor will I argue that working the book exercises related to these areas is sufficient training. At some point, however, the student becomes responsible for his own learning. And there is the problem of what to leave out. Quantitative measurement of strain? Mohr's Circle? Stereographic rotations? Equal area nets? Polyphase deformation? Rheology? Balanced Cross-sections? I can't find any excuse for cutting any of this content. In fact there are a number of other topics I would like to see added. In short I interpret this complaint to be a reflection of the necessarily narrow and limited view of a student who recently completed the course but has no real experience.

To summarize, I think this book fills a very real need and does it very well. I look forward to using the next edition beginning in three weeks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Potential good excersice book
The only reason I bought this book, was to have some exercises in Structural Geology to work with. My course didn't demand use this book, so it was voluntary.
I could agree the other comments here that it's a poor textbook, and could be a little thin in information. But for me I got some other structural geology books, and this exercise book just seemed perfect to play with.
When I started to solved the exercises, I realized quick that this book didn't have any solution in it. I sent a mail to the publisher to ask for the solution for this book, but they told me that it wasn't available for me, only for teachers.
The whole point of this book just vanished for me, I couldn't correct myself.

This is the reason I grade it only 3 stars. I actually find the exercises quite good, and would rate the book higher if it had solutions in it. But since its a lab course I could understand that it's a stupid idea to include solution. But since it's available for the public that doesn't take this lab course, it should be a edition that contains solution.

Bottom line. If you are secure and quite good at what you are doing in Structural geology, and of course you consider this book as a exercise book without taking this lab course (and you know its without any solutions),then you would get a lot of interesting exercises to work with. But if you want a textbook (too), consider something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor undergrad textbook
Examples are poorly laid out in the text, and the questions seldom follow from what has been shown in the text. Not a useful learning tool at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Structural Analysis & Synthesis: A Laboratory Course in Stru
This lab manual was required for our structural geology course given at the California State University, Dominguez Hills. In general, the book is not well laid out and there are too few problems to work.In order to become proficient one must work many types of problems. The author does not give enough examples of how to solve problems using both graphical then mathematical techniques. For example, a three-point problem can be solved by graphical or mathematical methods.Additionally, the book requires the reader to move between pages to extract the necessary information to solve a problem. This makes the book appear vague or confusing at times. The book is weak in areas that are of prime importance to geologists such as 3 point problems, thickness problems, out crop patterns, etc. These areas are important because they are used regularly in the interpretation of geology. Additionally, these problems are also found on many Registered Geology examination given by various states.

1-0 out of 5 stars This was my lab book
BAD.I had to use this for lab this quarter. The problems were on one page, the information and maps to work it were sometimes two pages prior to, or after it.Bad layout.Far too much page flipping.Thisbookalso didn't give very good examples, in such that they would give avery elementary example, and give significantlymore complex problems towork, without any farther explaination. This area of Geology isdifficult enough for us poor undergrads coming up without having this bookto throw us off track. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for the study of geology
I used this book to prepare myself as an Explainer at the New York Museum of Natural History's Hall of the Planet Earth. While the presentations by the museum's curators were excellent, the pace was too fast to absorb thematerial. The book was an excellent supplement that I used to study detailsover a longer period. This reinforced the information furnished by thecurators. The book is very well written and is useful for a person withlittle knowledge of geology. It furnishes clear and detailed explanationsand I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step introduction for new students
A good, comprehensive, step-by-step guide to the fundamental subject areas of geology. This book deals primarily with the theories behind geology and uses a wide variety of interesting examples to assist understanding. Somehelpful diagrams are included although the photographs could be improved.Avoids detailed and more advanced chemical explanations. ... Read more

Withthe field work as a starting point, there is thearticulation between the real universe and theconcepts, allowing the teacher and the students togather the object investigated and the knowledgeacquired in the classroom. This work enhances the fieldwork developed ingeography courses and seeks to classify themaccording to some relevant parameters in the processof teaching and learning.
