Love this book
OK I'm a new to geology. I am amazed to think about the many geologic formations that exsist. The book is a college level book that is both informative and enjoyable to read. It also makes you think. I'm glad I bought the book (yes - I'm cheap I got it used) but I will probably read it twice. Highly recommended for the newbee.

This is not a field guide or a rock ID book but an honest to goodness college level introductory text to introduce physical geology.

A great geology book.
This is the first geology book I have studied.It seems to be fairly complete for an introductory text.The pictures and graphics are excellent and the text easy to follow.A point that needs to be mentioned is that the authors repeat a lot of things multiple times.This is a good thing.It negates the need to go back and look stuff up that was forgotten or missed somehow.Repetition is the key to learning.The authors have done very well in this regard.

I needed this book for my class and I found it here for a much better price than at the local/school book stores.

Chernicoff is better
If this is the designated textbook for a college class, youre SOL. It's ok as far as it goes, but it seems to me to be more on the level of a high school book. Really kinda dumbed down. If you just want a good reference book for a subject youre really interested in, I would recommend Physical Geology by Chernicoff.

Ideally fits for the "Basic Geology" class
I've bought this book for the "Basic Geology" class.

The narration style of the book is relatively easy for the comprehension (compared to other science-related books). The illustrations are well-designed and really helpful. The links to web resources at the end of each chapter provide more details and visuals for those interested to go deeper into the subject.

Due to the authors' origin being the USA, the case studies and examples largely refer to the Northern America. It might not be very interesting for someone living in the Central Europe, like myself, still the principles and concepts behind the cases are more/less universal, so it does not make the book less attractive.

A Good Beginning Geology Textbook.
I teach a college-level geology course called "Planet Earth." At a lot of other universities it would be called "General Geology" or "Physical Geology." If you're going to be a geologist, this is probably where you start. Of course, most students aren't going to be geologists, they just want an interesting, meaningful and fun way to get their university science requirements out of the way. It's a fun course for me to teach. I enjoy students at the beginning level. Of course, you need a good textbook and the "Physical Geology" book has worked well for me and I've used it up through the last three editions. It's too expensive for what you get, but that's true for almost all geology textbooks.

This book has a good organization. I can teach geology in the way I want and I don't have to change the order of the chapters at all. Of course, I can't make it through the entire book as there's just too much to cover during a single semester. It's overwhelming! All geology textbooks are that way. I just tell the students that they're getting more for their money, but few of them appreciate the humor. In any case, it's an easy read for me and I like the examples and illustrations. It has all kinds of "In Greater Depth" boxes and I hope the students read and appreciate these little extras as they're quite good. I just don't have the time to cover them all. All in all, I've had better results with this textbook than with many others and I'd attribute it to the quality and readability of the book. Students seem to lie it, and that's part of the battle.

If you're just trying to understand geology on your own and don't intend to take a college-level course, you might find this a good book but it would depend on your own diligence and persistence. Understanding geology on your own is not the easiest way to go, but I'd say this is one of the better books if you're willing to try. Plummer (and the others) also suggest a host of supplemental readings and internet sites to aid the process. I suppose most people would chose many of the popular geology books, but these would probably rank more as entertainment than serious learning. This is a good textbook, one of the better ones I've used in my 40 plus years of teaching beginning geology.

"Earth" A review
This is the second edition of this text I've had. I consider it the best basic(or basic+) geology text I've ever seen. It's complete, well organized and introduces the subject in a way which makes the newcomer want to delve further. Its readable format presents the information as more than just pages of cold facts. After more than 50 years as an amateur geologist, I still find myself referring to it.

Confusing Manual, Confusing Class
Geology was my only science class in college.I should have picked something else.I just couldn't understand it.I feel like someone who is really into geology would appreciate this book and lab manual, but I was just confused the whole time.I feel like the lab manual didn't always correspond with the chapters in the book, which only added to my confusion.

That being said, I'm probably not the best person to review this, being as I could barely understand the subject.Someone who is really great at geology might really like this.I felt it was confusing, though.

I'm not sure about this. It calls itself a lab manual. Yes, it is spiral bound, with perforated pages for easy detachment, like many such manuals. Yet the text seems like that of a conventional geology book. Perhaps what really distinguishes the manual as such is the extensive problem sets. One to each chapter.

But if you want to learn geology, and do not have the accompanying Physical Geology book, you can still profitably and enjoyably read this manual. There is enough text and illustrations here to adequately convey lessons to a motivated reader. ... Read more

A Worthwhile Resource
This book provides a great frame of reference and perspective on the subject of Geology. It provides a well-structured overview of the subject, as well as a good guide for practical learning. It is an attractive book, and the content is surprisingly accessible, so it is suitable for a non-specialist audience as well as those studying it as a prescribed text.

The book is also well made and contains some excellent images. It's a little pricey, but worth having on your bookshelf, especially if you can pick up a copy secondhand.

Introductory Geology Text
This is the 10th edition of the now classic Physical Geology text by Plummer, at al. It is a good introductory text on the subject suitable for first year undergraduates.

It is beautifully illustrated, well organized and covers the subject in depth from discriptive geology to plate techtonics.

Very easy to read, lots of images
This book is so well spelled out about geology. It was actually fun to read. If you dont use it for a colleg class, use it to make yourself smarter.

review of geology book
Book was marked in 'Good' condition. It was very highlighted, and I was pretty disappointed when I first received it. Nonetheless, I have gotten used to the marks and don't really mind them anymore.

good book, bad support
Great book . Unfortunately, the CD rom is for windows 2000, and not upgradable to XP , let alone 7. Wiley seems to have little interest in helping. A little support would be appreciated.

Very Good, if Pricy, Textbook
This book is one of the standard university texts in physical geology, along with Understanding Earth by Frank Press et al. The book is well written and very well illustrated. The discription ofplate tectonics and it's integration throughout the book is very well done. Like most such texts, it has the disadvantage of being written by lifelong academics with little or no contact with the extraxtive industries. Their treatment of energy extraction is superficial at best. One of the most important developments in geology over the past 30 years, that of sequence stratigraphy, does not even get a mention, perhaps because it came out of the oil exploration industry. (Understanding Earth does devote a paragraph or two to sequence stratigraphy.)

I confess that I did not buy a copy from Amazon. I picked mine up at a Border's Bookstore in London. The only difference in my copy and one bought in the US is a large graphic on the cover saying "Restricted: not for sale in North America". Why the restriction? Like many university textbooks, this one can be bought in overseas at a fraction of the US price. My undiscounted Border's London price was $59.19, a little more than half the US price. Quite remarkable, considering the current weakness of the US dollar to the UK pound.

a very dynamic earth
Skinner, Porter and Park give you a richly illustrated introduction to geology. The text spans the breadth of modern geology, and shows an exciting and changing planet. There are numerous photos of examples of terrain, often accompanied by schematics to aid understanding. The latest techniques practised in geology are explained. Especially noteworthy is the extensive use of GPS. This has greatly aided recording the location of interesting geological samples.

Earthquakes are also well covered, and will probably be of interest to many readers, especially if you are in California. The history of the Richter and Mercalli scales is gone into. Unfortunately, predicting quakes is still very uncertain!

The discussion on earthquakes is also used as a good example of plate tectonics, where the latter is probably the central idea of geology.

First of all, the book was in excellent condition! I am impressed with the additional info added in between chapters. Geology is not my major, but I've found a new interest in our earth and what makes it what it is. The book breaks down the info in terms I can comprehend. Cliffs Physical Geology
I am always pleased with Cliffs Quick Review books, so I was very pleased with my order.

A life saver!!
I used these notes in PLACE of taking physical geology. I needed a final science class to graduate, and the only one available was Historical Geology, which had the prerequisite of physical geology. These Cliff's Notes are so thorough and easy to understand that I felt well prepared for the class, despite the fact that I had no experience in Geology whatsoever. I am not very good in science of any kind, and these notes were easy for even me to use:) I felt comfortable enough with the material presented in the notes to apply it in an entirely different class. I'm sure these would fantastic review notes for students in physical geology!

Full of pretty pictures and diagrams, just the way geology should be explained
I remember doing geology and geography at university, and I never came across a single lecturer who couldn't conjure up a simple but highly explanatory diagram on a chalk board, for every topic covered. These books must have pretty pictures as this one does, that is the way it is taught and the best way to learn it; additionally makes it more entertaining, which prevents college kids from falling asleep in lectures.

This is pretty good!
I bought this study guide to help me in my geology class. It isn't the same edition as my textbook but it is still the same. The chapters are the same and it has really helped me remember the material. The pages have fill in the blank and multiple choice and practice quizzes.All the answers are at the end of the book. I recomend this for anyone who is taking geology and is using the "Earth" book.

An outstanding introductory textbook in physical geology
Despite the proliferation of introductory physical geology textbooks in recent years, none have surpassed the quality of Tarbuck and Lutgens' "Earth".The text is accurate, up-to-date, well-organized, andexceptionally lucid.The writing flows nicely and presents complex topicsand ideas in a way that is easy for non-scientists to understand, while atthe same time resisting the trend toward "dumbing-down" that hasrecently affected many introductory textbooks in Earth sciences.The bookis also illustrated wonderfully with diagrams that are effectivelydesigned, beautifully executed, and perfectly matched to the accompanyingtext.The photographs are likewise outstanding in subject and quality,with great efforts obviously having been made to find excellent picturesthat complement the text and clearly illustrate the features and processesbeing described.The overall quality of the photographs is far better thanin most other textbooks of this kind.Substantial improvements have beenmade for the sixth edition, including the addition of helpful illustrationsto the glossary and the addition of many new photographs throughout thebook (for example, compare the 5th and 6th edition pictures of drumlins,moraines, igneous rock textures, tsunamis, sinkholes, etc.).Afterexamining many textbooks, I have decided to use this one in theundergraduate course I will teach next year.

Earth - an average introductory textbook
This book has dozens of errors, but in its defense, I must say that every introductory textbook I've used or reviewed has similar errors. For example, thermal expansion due to daily temperature fluctuations does NOT fracture rocks. Fire fractures rocks, and local fires can occur in manydeserts. The photo of a rock split is actually due to ice (not frost)wedging. Deserts can be freezing. The book does not address the importanceof past climates. Most of North America's landforms were formed under wet,warm climates, not today's. The hydrologic cycle should be expanded to thegeohydrologic cycle, which incorporates plate tectonics. Plate tectonics,as presented, is rather primitive. We're in, I'd say, 3rd generation platetectonics, but it is not being taught. Mountain glacial landscapes areentirely misinterpreted, based on a false paradigm originating in the1840s. Yosemite Valley is far more a relict tropical landscape than aglaciated one, and Bridalveil Falls has existed for 10s of millions ofyears before glaciation. Evolution of desert landscapes is equally as bad.The authors don't understand pediments, which are exhumed weathering fronts(as in Joshua Tree National Park) or exhumed detachments (as in the MojaveDesert). Lots of fun for rocks!
This book is an excellent introductory text, with a wide scoop and a clear and descriptive style.The pictures are gorgeous and informative, and theside notes (Boxes) are powerful examples of the topics being discussed, aswell as fascinating sources of trivia (do you know what Bingham Canyon is?)that add flavor to the book!My only complaint was that there are nochapter summaries, but as the material was clear and concise, I had no needfor them! ...
