Description:
The effect of mixing chamber geometry and feeding system geometry on g/l-dispersion in interdigital micromixers was basically investigated with regard to bubble size and bubble size distribution (BSD) using the systems nitrogen/aqueous glycerol solution with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as surfactant and nitrogen/water with SDS. The process of bubble formation was visually observed in glass micromixers with different mixing chamber geometries. This was set in correspondence to bubble size and BSD of the foams finally formed. Dependencies were deduced from comparing total flow rates, flow rate ratios and mixing chamber geometries. These investigations were supplemented by similar experiments with micromixers fabricated out of metal stainless steel. Based on the insight that a multi-channel gas feeding system without special measures for equipartition of the gas is counterproductive for small bubbles and narrow BSD, a new feeding system with generic flow configuration was developed and tested for the stainless steel micromixer. The feeding system was therefore simplified from a multi-channel gas feed system to a single-channel one. The single gas feed channel was encompassed from both sides by two liquid feed channels. It was shown that with this new feeding system smaller bubbles with a narrow size distribution are formed. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume contains a series of papers invited by the Journal of Nonlinear Science Editors, and dedicated to the memory of Juan-Carlos Simo, one of its original editors. The articles are largely in areas of scientific interest of Professor Simo, including mechanics, geometry, applied dynamics, and computation. Juan-Carlos Simo did not see boundaries between computation, mathematics, mechanics and dynamics, and crossed these boundaries with extremely high quality and productive interactions. This volume aims to capture some of that spirit. ... Description:
This paper shows effects of design factors for micromixers using the collision of fluid segments on mixing performance. Design factors are collision zone diameter, outlet channel diameter, collision angle of reactant fluids, and number of fluid segments for collision. We evaluate mixing performances of T- and Y-shape micromixers and the K-M mixer using the Villermaux/Dushman reaction. When the Reynolds number in the outlet channel, Re, is less than 200, the fluid segment size determined by only channel geometries, W"c, and Re are significant on mixing performance. From the results in this Re range, we correlate the by-product UV absorbance with the effective fluid segment size after collision, W"e=W"c/Re^n. The absorbance is linearly fitted with W"e. Thus, W"e expresses effects of total flow rate, outlet channel diameter, and number of fluid segments for collision on mixing performance. We can improve mixing performance by increasing flow rates as well as reducing channel sizes, leading to avoid extremely small channels to improve mixing performance and a high pressure drop in mixer channels. When Re>200, high share rates applied to fluid segments also enhance the mixing performance. This indicates that high mixing performance and high throughput can be achieved simultaneously. ... Description:
Humeral and femoral cross-sectional properties from three archaeological variants of the Arikara, an American Great Plains Indian tribe, were analyzed for temporal (16th to 19th centuries) changes in long bone architecture, asymmetry, and sexual dimorphism associated with intensification of horticulture during the late protohistoric and early historic periods. There were a number of significant changes in long bone, especially femoral, cross-sectional morphology and asymmetry among females through time that probably reflect increases in the workload necessary to produce surplus crops. Changes in long bone architecture among males are restricted to the humerus and may reflect a greater reliance on firearms. The pattern of sexual dimorphism also changes through time among the Arikara due to a combination of environmental (nutrition and disease) and mechanical factors. ... Read more
