Product Description
THIS EDITION IS INTENDED FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. From the time she was a young girl, Georgia O'Keeffe saw the world in her own way and she always knew what was in her heart--to be an artist.Amazon.com Review
"When I was twelve years old, I knew what I wanted--to be an artist." Sobegins My Name Is Georgia, Jeanette Winter's lovely picture-bookportrait of American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. It is a portrait of astrong-minded young girl who liked to play by herself, dress differentlyfrom her sisters, and let her black hair fly when others wore braids. Andit is the portrait of an artist who lived to be 98 years old, letting the worldsee things as she saw them through her remarkable paintings. This smallbook--with sparse, carefully chosen prose--traces O'Keeffe's life throughher schooling in Chicago and New York, and her first trek to Texas: "And Ipainted the sunset and the sky and the wonderful loneliness and emptinessof the place. I painted day and night." From there she experienced the"canyons of steel" of New York City, "where other artists lived," then itwas off to the New Mexico desert. Winter does an exquisite job ofreflecting an artist's creative life--how she wanted others to seeflowers the way she saw them, how she painted them "BIG, so people wouldnotice." The author's illustrations, perfect squares on white pages withthe occasional cloud or bird drifting out of the lines, make this small, powerful tribute shine.(Ages 6 and older) --Karin Snelson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Art Teacher Review
This is a great book to introduce Georgia O'Keefe to a group of students. The illustrations are lovely and the text is appropriate for elementary aged students. My students retained so much of the story that they were facinated when they could create flowers...big (like Georgia).

4-0 out of 5 stars Contains many good life lessons.....
As other reviews of this book mention, this is a tribute to the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. However, it is more than this because it celebrates the virtues of individuality, following one's bliss and sharing one's vision. It also punctuates the important value of celebrating life and purusing it with openness, curiosity and passion.

On a more general level, the book is an engaging story for youngsters between the ages of 4 and 8.It has good illustrations and presents an opportunity for a parent to discuss the importance of art within the context of the biography of a great artist.

Georgia O'Keeffe saw the world in her own way and she shared her vision through her art. This is expressed well in the closing to this book, "Georgia O'Keeffe lived to be ninety-eight years old.In museums all across the land, people see her flowers, deserts, hills, cities, and skies the way she did."This is indeed a nice way to end a beautiful tribute that celebrates the life of a true individualist.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Biography of Georgia O'Keefe for Young Children
I use this book in my early elementary art classes to introduce this American artist, and to follow her style to create a landscape picture. The book is easily understood by young students (Kindergarten) and gives a good general picture of the life of the artist. Some examples of her work are pictured, but they are small. The story does a good job of conveying the independent attitude of the artist and her unusual work.

4-0 out of 5 stars my name is georgia: A portrait by Jeanette Winter
I began to read this to my kindergarten classes. It kept their attention for the most part.I will not use it for my 3rd through 7th.I will use it for my 1st and maybe 2nd.The illustrations are very nice and it does give the little ones an idea of who OKeefe was like at their age.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Artist Who Saw the World in a Unique Way.....
Georgia O'Keeffe was always different..."I did things other people don't do."She didn't dress like the other young girls, or wear her hair in braids, and she was content to be alone..."I was satisfied to be all by myself."From an early age knew she wanted to be an artist..."Maybe I could make something beautiful..."Jeanette Winter takes us on the journey of Georgia O'Keeffe's remarkable life, from her birth in Wisconsin in 1887, to art school in Chicago and New York, and then on to her years of painting in Texas, New York City, and finally the New Mexican desert. Her simple, spare prose, complete with quotations from Georgia's own writings, is engaging, and complemented by charming and evocative illustrations that enhance the story.Georgia O'Keeffe loved the sky, sunset, red hills, flowers, and bones, and she painted the world around her BIG, so that people would see it the way she did.Perfect for kids 6-10, My Name Is Georgia is a lovely introductory biography that will whet the appetite of young art lovers everywhere, and brings home the important message...Never be afraid to follow your dream. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to the state of Georgia for student readers
When you learn about the Original 13 Colonies the emphasis is always on Jamestown in Virginia, because it was first, Massachusetts Bay, because that is where the Pilgrims landed, and Pennsylvania, because that is where Ben Franklin ended up.Georgia, as the southern most colony, receives scant attention and all you really learn is that it was settled by criminals. But as Nancy Robinson Masters points out in this look as "Georgia" for the America the Beautiful, Second Series, it was not exactly criminals in the same sense that the English sent convicts to settle Australia, but more of a second chance for those who had ended up in debtor's prison.Consequently, when young readers finish this book they are going to remember the name of James Edward Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe is introduced in Chapter One, "A New Settlement," which explains why Georgia was named for King George II (the good one, not the bad one of the American Revolution who is King George III).The next three chapters cover the history of Georgia, starting with Chapter Two, "People and Pathways of the Past," which goes back to the original nomads who settled the area and then looks at the Cherokee and Creek native tribes, as well as the Spanish explorers, French Huguenots, and English settlers who arrived. After laying out Oglethorpe's Grand Plan, the chapter ends with the American Revolution.Chapter Three, "Troubled Times," covers the Civil War and Sherman's March to the Sea along with Reconstruction.Chapter Four, "The Twentieth Century and Onward," starts with the Weevil War and ends with the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chapter Five of these books always looks at the geography of the state, but "Natural Georgia" is different because it does not look at the topographical divisions of the state, which, I admit, is one of the things I have been finding interesting about these books. But Masters ends up doing that in Chapter Six, "Highways and Byways," just to be different. The politics of the state is covered in Chapter Seven, "The Power of the People," which includes a look at some of the political leaders the state has produced, such as Jimmy Carter and Newt Gingrich. This is also the chapter where you find out how "Georgia on My Mind" as sung by Ray Charles became the state song and the controversial history of Georgia's state flag.

The Georgia economy is covered in Chapter Eight, "Progress and Prosperity," which is more than peanuts, cotton, and peaches. In fact, Georgia is first in the nation in selling chickens.Chapter Nine, "The Many Faces of Georgia," looks at not just education and religion, but also integration. Then in Chapter Ten, "The Arts, Architecture, and Athletics," we find out about the writers (Margaret Mitchell, Flannery O'Connor, Alice Walker), musicians (Johnny Mercer, Jessye Norman), and athletes (Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Mel Blount) the state has produced.

As always, you will find a Timeline comparing U.S. and Georgia state history in the back of the book along with several pages of Fast Facts. Then there is a list of books, organizations and Internet sites where you can to To Find Out More. There are also lots of full-color photographs and original maps, along with the informative sidebars where young readers will find out some of the most interesting things about Georgia. This includes people like the Revolutionary Heroine Nancy Morgan Hart and Eli Whitney the Father of Mass Production, things like the Colossal Fossil of a 40-million-year-old whale skeleton and a recipe for Peach Pie, and places like the mounds built by the Mississippians in Georgia.Young readers will discover that for a place that was settled by "criminals," a lot of impressive people came from Georgia, from Sequoyah and Stonewall Jackson to George Washington Carver and Ted Turner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Away Laughing On A Fast Camel
In this book, the fifth book in the Georgia Nicolson series, not many things happen.
There is more rambling, more nonsense, and quite a few hilarious moments.

Two boys are pursued-
Dave the Laugh, who Georgia is falling in love with even if she doesn't want to admit it.
Masimo, the new lead singer for The Stiff Dylans. He is also Robbie's replacement. He is Italian. Georgia is also falling for him.

And besides that...nothing.
Georgia and her friends do the crazy things they always do, Angus is insane as always.
Oh, and there may just be a new addition to the household of the Nicolson's.
It may or may not be a cat.

The funniest of all the books so far.
No, I did not laugh out loud on more than three occasions. Definately not.
Actually, I did.
Louise Rennison, you are great.

(cross posted from my blog, [...])

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!
Georgia Nicolson is so funny and just doesn't realize she is in love with Dave the laugh. This book is just as good as the first four.

5-0 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel review
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel is the fifth book in the Georgia Nicholson series.Georgia, a British teenager full of gorgeosity and attitude continues the cunning chronicles that are her diaries, full of red-bottom-osity, love-stricken cats, and a tres mad toddler. On top of all that, Georgia's love interest, the lead singer of the "Stiff Dylans", Robbie, (aka the Sex God) is off to Kiwi-a-go-go land, and Georgia's got the Cosmic Horn for their new singer, Masimo.
Libby, Georgia's toddler sister, is quite literally mad.One minute she's trying to kiss you, the next she's hitting you and calling you "cheeky monkey".You never know what's going to happen with that crazy bugger whether she's snuggling a turnip or running around in the nuddy-pants.I love the absolutely outrageous antics she gets up to, and it's always laugh out loud hilarious.
I totally recommend this book for girls in their teenage years. Some topics may be too awkward for younger girls.I love this book because there's a laugh on every page. Also, it's a great source for outrageous British slang.Georgia is always on a wacky adventure, so you can never put it down or else you will have tres snog withdrawel. This book is fabbity-fab-fab and you won't be able to read it just once!!

5-0 out of 5 stars True Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is FAB!
I love these books. I started getting them on book on tape at the library and I enjoy them sooo much. I really want to get them at the book store so that I can read them over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel
While S.G.(Robbie) is off in Kiwi-a-gogo,to snog the local sheep, Georgia is left on her all aloney, on her owney! But never fear, a new, and BETTER S.G. is on his way! And this one has an Italian accent! Eith Georgia, who knows what could go wrong? Oh, yeah! EVERYTHING! With Dave the laugh coaching her along, this is one of the funniest books in the searies! ... Product Description
The English colony of Georgia was the product of specific goals. First, England hoped to provide its most impoverished citizens opportunities for land and a new life. Second, the frontier needed a military buffer between Charles Town, the southernmost settlement, and the Spanish in Florida. Third, it certainly wouldn t hurt if the Georgia settlers produced raw materials and goods to export to England. It was one of the most auspicious and ambitious colonial plans. Unfortunately, the well-meaning and charitable Trustees didn t really know what they were doing. They chose crops that wouldn t grow in the Georgia climate and soil. They prohibited slaves, and while that decision was progressive for those times, it put the settlers at an economic disadvantage. They simply couldn t compete with the other colonies for new settlers and continued financing. Georgia wasn t a failure, but its settlers worked harder than any others to survive. ... Read more

Product Description

As I was going out of my bedroom door I remembered my nungas. Perhaps I should take some precautions to keep them under strict control. Maybe bits of Sellotape on the ends of them to keep them from doing anything alarming? I'd like to trust them, but they are very unreliable.

The irrepressible heroine of the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging is back, and funnier than ever! Georgia has finally landed Robbie the Sex God, but he's never around, and Georgia's ex, Dave the Laugh, is starting to look quite dreamy. Strangely, so does just about every other guy Georgia meets, even the new French teacher.

In this third installment of Georgia's hilarious confessions, Georgia's "red bottomosity" is out of control! Whatever will happen next?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series...
The title of her second book caught my eye one day. "On the bright side, I'm now the girlfriend of a sex god." The owner of the bookstore told me it was the second in a series though, and that I really should read the first one. I took a chance, and haven't looked back. I bought the book for a late night ferry ride, and I couldn't put the book down. Laughed my a$$ off.

I'm not a big reader, but I've read every one in the series!

There's an adult version, which could be equally as good, but I'm already 6 books in on the original version, so I'm sticking with it, and think it's more than worth the age gap between me and the main character. She's a british teenager, and she's hilarious!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Books A Knock Out!
Knocked Out By My Nunga Nunga's is the third book in the Georgia Nicolson series. The book is dairy of a young 14 year-old girl in England. In it she talks about all the crazy adventures and obsesses over her boyfriend Robbie aka The Sex God.She also talks about normal teenage girl stuff like how insane her parents and Libby, her little sister, are. The most important thing in her life are friends that she also talks about quite often. When the book begins Georgia is in trouble and got suspended from her all girls school. This is something common for her and her friends.Personally I loved the book. The book is hilarious and since it's in England the words can make it funnier. It's also a good book for teenage girls because I think that we can relate to some of the things she does in the book. It makes you go "Wow! I thought I was the only one who thought that."It's also one of those books that your friends won't call you a book worm if you read it because they'll probably want to read it too! This book isn't only for girls, I know some boys who have read it too! This book and other books in the series are some of my favorite books I've ever read. The author Louise Rennison really knows how to connect with the reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars While Not as Good as the Originals, Still Pleases All
Although this edition to the Georgia Nicolson is significantly slimmer and not quite as raw as the first two, it still manages to bring me laughing out loud. Sometimes in the book-store. I would recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars this book is sooo funny
