I bought this cookbook as a softcover in a Stars and Stripes Bookstore in Germany in 1969.I have used it ever since. it is the best German cookbook for the average cook I have found.
try the hot potato salad or4 try the hot potato salad sauce on spinach for a spinach salad .The red cabbage is magnificent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recipes sound great!
But there are hardly any pictures. It's pages and pages of boring texts, with very little pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This is a cookbook for people who want to cut fat, and calories out of their diet.
I subscribe to the magazine but try to buy each year's book because I like the recipes so much

5-0 out of 5 stars cook book
Purchased this as a gift for my daughter, newlywed. She likes to eat healthy and she has found this book to be very helpful, easy recipes and has said the meals she has prepared have all been good. She would like for me to continue purchasing these books, as you have the whole year of recipes from Cooking Light in one book.Would highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome as usual
This annual edition was filled with delicious and easy recipes. Look up the ingredient you want to use and you will find many recipes sure to please the palate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Path to Eating Right
Cooking Light magazine is the best lifestyle, health conscience magazine published. It appeals to the novice and the experienced chef and health nut.I bought the book because I own 2 previous editions. These cookbooks are awesome.Years ago, I barely knew how to throw together spaghetti. Now, I explore my cookbooks and magazines for new ideas. The recipes appeal, not only to me, but my young son and husband.Meal time doesn't have to be bland or fattening anymore!!It takes getting used to the formating, receipes grouped by month; however, it works better for produce that is in season. Why spend a fortune in February for something that comes in spring or summer? What really helped me get started down this path, was the easy & fast receipes. They allowed me to graduate to more complicated dishes.I recommend this book (and the other Cooking Light publications) to everyone that I can. ... Product Description
Many of the most enchanting ingredients of an old-fashioned American Christmas are of German origin, traditions such as St. Nicholas (Santa Claus), the Christmas tree (Tannenbaum), kugels (blown glass ornaments), woodcarvings (nativity figures, nutcrackers), "The Messiah" by George Frederick Handel, and the Christmas carol "Silent Night," composed on Christmas Eve in 1818 by Franz Gruber. These and other traditions of German origin, embraced worldwide, are described in this book.

Also included are historical facts and folklore. German literature, cinema, language art, and heritage are all presented.

Karin Gottier’s own story of childhood in Germany during World War II and adulthood in America is heart warming. She says: "In November and early December, when the sun sets and the sky turns red, children say that Christkindl is heating his bake oven to make Christmas cookies."

The smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, anise, and nuts promise the "tastes of Christmas" (gingerbread men and houses, the beautiful designs of springerle cookies). The recipes included in the book represent a joyous and bountiful observance of the season.

German-American Life: Recipes and Traditions features German Americans in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Connecticut, New York, Missouri, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and all over the United States. ... Read more

As you read the recipes, all taken from San Germán local residents, you begin to get the varied flavors and influences of Puerto Rican foods in general, and local foods western part of the Island in detail. The illustrations are beautifully done, and Mrs. Vivoni's verses are the perfect accompaniment for this work of love. The recipes work, too! They were all tested and quantified. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Foods of the Amana Colonies
Over 75 photographs from 1900 to the 1980s illustrate life and scenes in the Amana Colonies of Iowa, including German recipes by the cooks who made themfamous. The photographs are from the collections of Joan Liffring-Zug and the Museum of Amana History. Over 100 recipes include cabbage soup, beer batter for vegetables, dandelion greens with bacon dressing, Amana-style sour cream salad, German peasant stew, quick sauerbraten, rabbit, roast pheasant with apples and kraut, and more. Directions are given for an old-style colony dinner including spinach, boiled beef, fried potatoes and radish salad.

Over the years, millions of visitors have enjoyed these foods served family style in the Amana restaurants. Other recipes are ones served primarily in the homes of Amana people. Additional recipes are reprinted from previous recipe collections. This book is an expanded edition of a 40-page book first published in the 1980s.

The Amana Colonies are seven little villages where, from 1854 to 1932, these German-speaking people lived a communal religious life. In 1932 they voted to incorporate their land, factories and various businesses. The people bought their own homes and many founded businesses, including the restaurants noted for serving ample portions family style. The Amanas are open for visitors all year.

Sue Roemig Goree of Iowa City, Iowa, grew up in the Amanas and writes of the delicacies from the garden of her "oma" (grandmother). Traditions such as the cake shower for the new bride and groom at their reception and typical recipes are given in this book. Essays cover the Christmas customs, the Museum of Amana Heritage, and how to visit and enjoy the Amanas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise!
This book was given to me by a friend who knows of my interest in German-American things.I had never heard of the Amana community before. At first glance, I thought, "isn't that nice...," but this is a very interesting book. The recipes are great and the book is full of fascinating details about this German-American community. The only trouble with this book is that some of the ingredients are not readily available. This should not stop you from purchasing this book, it is well worth the money! ...
