A Clash of Confusions
A fascinating attempt to describe and analyse the phenomenon of stool succession disputes illustrating how life can be made complex and complicated whilst two separate traditions vie for supremacy on a foundation of misunderstanding and mischief. This study within six District Assemblies in Ghanasought to examine if relationships between theirsocial capital and performance existed. Improvementsin performance in these six DistrictAssemblies were defined by increases in DistrictAssembly Common Fund expenditures. Greatercollective memory among members within a DistrictAssembly was defined as decreases in the percentageof members believing that corruption was present orincreases in the percentage of members believingthat social capital was present in other District Assemblies. Greater social capital was defined asincreases in the percentage of members reportingworking with other members and perceiving thatrelationship as equal and trusting. Significantpositive correlations were observed betweencollective memory and social capital but thesecorrelations were not consistent with performance.Rather, performance was either poor for all DistrictAssemblies or increased as social capital andcollective memory declined. From the author: Ghana, like most developing countries, struggles to improve access to water and sanitation to its urban population. Presently, many areas within the country do not have access to clean water from the national grid. And in areas served by the approved utility company, water service is mostly erratic and increasingly unreliable. Available evidence indicates that only 59 percent of urban residents have access to improved drinking water. The main policy tool aimed at improving water supply is private sector participation in the water sector. The inadequacies in urban water supply are felt disproportionally in disadvantaged or peri-urban communities. Often, the needs of the disadvantaged communities are hidden in the aggregate statistics of the larger urban areas. This research theorizes that because of the unique characteristics of the disadvantaged community--a high concentration of low income dwellers, squatter communities, and poor infrastructure developments--private sector participation often has very limited effect on the disadvantaged communities. Using a multiple case study approach, this study analyzes the unique water problems faced by disadvantaged urban communities. The research concludes by espousing a multi-sectoral approach which utilizes all resources and uses multiple avenues for water delivery as the best approach to ensure water security to disadvantaged communities.

Writing Ghana, Imagining Africa changes dominant ideas about Africa's relations with modernity and the global history of nationalism by recovering, and bringing fresh interpretations to, a modern genealogy of African nationalist theory.This is done by examining the writing of intellectuals from preindependence Ghana from the latter half of the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth, writers who operated self-consciously in a Pan-African ideological framework.By confronting the concept of "the African Nation" under the colonial order, the book argues, these writer-intellectuals were also confronting modernity in ways that would be important to the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.Writing Ghana, Imagining Africa is affiliated with recent revisionary works that have demonstrated the conceptual and existential validity of "alternative modernities." This book proposes in this regard to shift our understanding of the modern from a securely and exclusively Western mode of being to the modern as relational and inclusively intercultural.
