Product Description
Crossing glaciers is a necessary component of many mountain climbs. In the alpine environment, the ability to travel safely, and the confidence to perform an efficient rescue in the event of mishap is paramount to a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.

Although there are other books on glacier travel and crevasse rescue, none are as clear, complete, and up to date as Glaciers! The Art of Travel, the Science of Rescue.

Through the use of hundreds of illustrations and photos, this book covers all aspects of glacier travel, including equipment, rope rigging, prusiking, snow and ice anchors, belay systems, self-arrests, and many different forms of crevasse rescue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and technically detailed presentation
This is a book on something I knew nothing about before--the art and science of travelling, climbing, and rescue on glaciers. There are six chapters that dicuss various aspects of glacier survival and climbing skills, including equipment and clothing, glacier features and hazards, rope techniques for travel and rescue (which is called "rigging" in mountaineering parlance), anchors and anchor systems, and glacier travel techniques and crevasse rescue. In addition, there are three appendices on knots for glacier travel and rescue, the self-arrest (which is about how to stop yourself or a companion from sliding or falling), and mechanical advantage, which is devoted to different pulley systems.

The book is obviously intented for serious climbers and rescue personnel since much of it is fairly technical and detailed. Just the rope rescue and pulley systems can get pretty complex, but I enjoyed reading about all of it nevertheless, and I have new appreciation of and understanding for the skill it takes to survive or perform a rescue under these conditions.

There are so many interesting topics on glacier travel and survival discussed that it's hard to summarize or pick just one as an example, but it was interesting to learn about the pros and cons of different-numbered rope teams. For example, there is alwaysa trade-off between the number of the people in the team, safety, and speed of travel. Two-person teams can travel the fastest but are considered the least safe since if one person falls into a crevasse it's very difficult to effect a rescue. Three-person teams are considered the minimum for safe travel but are slower than two-man teams, and five-man teams are considered the safest but are the slowest. Although considered the minimum for safe travel, for a three-man team, it turns out that it's very difficult to perform a rescue if the middle person falls into a crevasse, whereas if the person on either end falls in it's not as difficult.

Each discipline has its own special terminology and mountaineering is no different. I learned a lot of new words and terms, so I'll mention just a few of these here. I learned about the Bilgeri rescue, the Canadian drop-loop systen, how to rescue the middle person (which as I said, can present special difficulties), the Prusik knot and single-strand food Prusik, the Garda and mariner's knots, belay systems for low to high force falls, mechanical ascenders and mini-ascenders, firn tubes (an anchor tube that can be driven into the snow, bollards (anchors for snow and ice), pickets (which are just like it sounds and are metal stakes), ice screws, and many others.

One final odd thing I learned is that there is a photo of a mountaineer wading almost hip deep across a slush pool. I didn't know that glaciers also contained pools of melted water. You'd think all the water would be frozen. But I read once that the glaciers and snow on Mt. Ranier are melting so much that sometimes enough flood water has run out of certain ice caves that they've occasionally knocked both people and a trail outhouse down. :-) There's an odd German word for this type of flood but unfortunately I don't remember it right now.

The text is well written and there are many illustrations, especially of the many rope, knots, and pulley systems, configurations and techniques which show their application in different situations. This is an excellent book on glaciers for mountaineering which I suspect will be mainly of interest to serious climbers and rescue team members. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very basic and broad overview
If you are looking for a book that is an overview of the Glacier National Park area, this could be the book for you, but I was very dissapointed. At least half of the book is not even about Glacier, which is fine, but I was not expecting that after reading the title and thumbing through a few chapters.

The details of hikes, campgrounds, and activities are slim. The book generally consists of an overview and author's personal story about regions of the park, and then VERY briefly list a few hikes in the area.I have done better researching this park on the internet than this book could ever provide. I wanted something to read on my plane ride to Glacier, so I'm going to return this and try another book about the park.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After finding great books on Banff and Jasper National Parks, this book was a major disappointment. The book should probably have been called Montana's Flathead Valley with a brief overview of Glacier NP.If you're planning to visit the area, this book does not have enough detail or information on Glacier or Flathead Valley to be of value. You can get more information with a quick Google. Also, this book is pretty stale.Although it has a recent copyright date, most of the pictures date from the 70's.Bottom line, save your money and look for a different book.I'm returning my copy to Amazon for a refund.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to a Glacier book collection
I found that this book provides much additional information about Glacier National Park and the surrounding Flathead Valley that I was not able to find in other books. For example, I was very pleased to read about hiking the Jewel Basin, and now knowing how to get there, with some trail descriptions. And I learned more about activites on Flathead Lake.

The book briefly describes different outdoor activities available in the area, such as biking, fishing, boating, skiing, hunting, kayaking, and floating, although in a brief form; not thoroughly extensive. There is lots of information on hiking, but I require another hiking book for more details. It also provides educational information on wildlife, fires, ecology, and history. It is NOT an information guide for lodging and dining.

Combined together with the Insiders Guide to Glacier National Park and the Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks Falcon Guide, I think Explore Glacier National Park helps make a complete set of a wide range of information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting and informative series
Glaciers (Let's Read and Find Out)
Nice map to show where on earth glaciers are found. We learn how they are formed and move and pick up rocks and dirt and carry them along. We learned about moraines. A drawing that supposedly show the glacier melting and water running under it and carrying ground up rocks etc but the picture is ambiguous. My boy asked about it and I had to kind of fake it. The other drawings are fabulous tho.

The drawings are great. This one has a touch of mystery. We see on onepage a person with dogsled mushing across the ice and snow. In the foreground are crevasses. My 5 year old and I discussed the cracks and the danger out side of reading the story. A few pages later the same person is pulling his dogs out of a fissure. They are hanging by their harnesses. What's funny is the story doesn't mention this activity going on and THAT makes it more interesting. The book mentions the ice stretching and cracking and that they may be thousands of feet deep however doesn't say how dangerous it can be to cross a glacier. ... Read more

Located 45 miles from Juneau, Alaska, Glacier Bay National Park encompasses more than 3.3 million acres of wilderness land. Dominated by sheer15,000-foot mountains, carved by swift rivers, and served by a single pavedroad, the park is remote and difficult to access--unless you're one of the360,000-odd visitors who arrive there by cruise ship, touring the park'shundred-mile-long coast.

Noted wildlife photographers and prolific authors Erwin and Peggy Bauer gofar beyond the docks in this portfolio and guidebook, which captures theplace in several seasons and moods. Among their subjects are the park'slandforms (including glaciers and mountains), its abundant and varied birdlife, and indigenous mammals such as mountain goats, wolverines, sea lions, seals, killer whales, otters, and, as the authors cheerfully remark,"bears, bears, bears." Students of nature photography will find much tolearn from in these pages, and visitors planning a trip by whateverconveyance into the area will get a good sense of what awaits them, as wellas a fine keepsake volume. --Gregory McNamee ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Alaska pictures
The book size is smaller than most photo books, but there are some nice pictures of Glacier Park that I didn't take when I took my trip. The delivery time took longer than expected, but when I e-mailed seller to follow up on book, he immediately took care of it by sending out another book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice photo book
I purchased this book as a primer for a trip to Alaska that ended up getting postponed but I still consider it money well spent. There is a small amount of information and history but the star of the show is a fine collection of color photographs. Glaciers, wildlife, and plants/flowers are all depicted here in very high quality photos. Each time I turned the page, I was struck by the beauty of what I saw next.

The only criticism of the book is that it's awfully small. Less than 100 pages and its dimensions are quite small as well. This means that the photos are not presented to best advantage because they are so small (though they still look quite good) and they could have included a bit of information about the animals and others sights depicted so beautifully. Still, I would highly recommend the book if you're at all interested in getting an idea of what Glacier Bay has to offer. ... Read more

Product Description
A man of legendary stature in the climbing world, author Fred Beckey has literally followed in the footsteps of the early adventurers in his pursuit of this history of the Northern Cascade Range. Covering the mountain area between the Columbia and Fraser rivers, this volume brings together the experiences of a wide range of explorers, from the Native Americans who walked the first mountain trails to the Forest Service employees who traveled and mapped the land extensively. In between there were traders and trappers of the Hudson's Bay Company; men searching for railroad passes, wagon routes, or gold; and also a hardy group of geologists and topographers. All these groups were in pursuit of an increased knowledge of the terrain that would allow them to map (and perhaps profit from) the beautiful and mysterious northern Cascades.

A RANGE OF GLACIERS is rich in colorful detail. The author has made extensive use of the journals, letters, and official reports of both the famous and the less well known explorers of these mountains. Beckey has given us not only the records of where they traveled and what they found, but also their expressions of the wonder, hardships, camaraderie, disappointments, and sheer exhilaration of discovery in an unknown wilderness.

Fred Beckey has written several books on mountaineering and climbing including three Cascade Alpine Guides, Challenge of the North Cascades, and Mount McKinley: Ice Crown of North America, published by Moutaineers Books; and Climbing Mount Rainier, published by Alpenbooks. Beckey also wrote the foreword to ALASKA ASCENTS: WORLD-CLASS MOUNTAINEERS TELL THEIR STORIES, published by Alaska Northwest Books(tm). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 54 - 40 or fight
The primary accomplishment of this book is its 500+ page discussion of the Washington Cascades without mention of The Mountaineers club! The first140 pages deal with indians, immigrant trails and the Hudson's Bay Company.Nothing new here, a lot of references to Winthrop's Canoe and Saddle and a discription of Ross' trip over Cascade Pass. The next seventy pages are about the first boundry survey fron 1857 - 1862. This is the guts of the book and it is really good - vintage Beckey. It's researched from original sources and well footnoted. The next sixty or seventy pages are basically about the railroads. These stories have been told before in more detai but the recounting is interesting with an attention to the geography that is usually overlooked. (Yakima Pass?) The third part of the book is a superficial presentation of mining in the Northwest, early mountaineering on the volcanoes and thebeginnings of the forest service. None of these are done particularly welland none of them have enough detail to complement the first part of the book. This section does have a thirty page section on the USGS topographers andthe second boundry survey in 1901 - 1908. It was during this era that manyof the first ascents in the cascades were done but the discussion is briefand clearly omits the majority of what Beckey wrote about these efforts inthe CAG series. Overall I have to say that I was disappointed. I understandthat the Oregon Historical Society lacked the funds to publish and held it up for a long time but I started hearing about this book in the early '90sand saw a mock-up of it's cover at their booth at bookfest in about 1995. I got very excited reading the first part of the book but ended up feeling like Fred got tired about halfway through, or that he lost interest and just glossed over everything after the boundry survey. Read Woodhouse about mining. Read Molenar and Haines or Rusk on mountaineering. Read Beckey's own Challengeof the North Cascades and the introductions and footnotes in the CascadeAlpine Guide series. Read Bates Three Fingers to get a flavorof the early forest service era - and there are probably better sources for people interested in that topic (Even Beckey's CAG intros and notes have more information that this book does.) Read Tabor & Crowder Routes and Rocks about the geology.Read Roe and Praether about the railroads (again, also covered in CAG). Read Miles Kolma Kulshan about Mt. Baker. Finally, read Carlos Schwantes. His railroad discussion and his regional history are a lot better than Beckey's. But read Beckey about the boundry survey. There's nothing else like it. ... Read more

Product Description

Glaciers and ice sheets have been melting significantly during recent decades, posing environmental threats at local, regional and global scales. Changes in glaciers are one of the clearest indicators of alterations in regional climate, since they are governed by changes in accumulation (from snowfall) and ablation (by melting of ice). Glacier changes have been measured for the last century by traditional field measurements, resulting in long time series for a few glaciers. Remote sensing data and methods, and geographic information systems, provide the means to allow glacier changes to be monitored at a global scale, to be analysed rapidly and to store the results and present information to both scientific and popular audiences in a way which was not possible before the digital revolution. Remote sensing of glaciers began with terrestrial and aerial photography during the middle of the 20th century, but today the discipline embraces a large variety of data types from laser scanner data to very high resolution satellite imagery, which can be applied to the mapping of glacier changes in terms of area, surface zonation or thickness. This book highlights the history of the remote sensing of glaciers, the physics of glaciers and remote sensing of them, and focuses particularly on modern data and methods used by remote sensing specialists and glaciologists. The book presents examples of glacier research carried out, for example in the Alps, Norway, Iceland, Caucasus, Patagonia, Rocky Mountains, Pakistan, Antarctica, New Zealand, and Svalbard.
This book is of interest to specialists and students working in the field of remote sensing, glaciology, physical geography, geology and climate change.

I worked in Glacier for 3 summers, and every one of us hikers has a copy of this book. It got me up many, many summits all around the park. Make sure you hit up the Many Glacier area!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiker's opinion
I've had this book for more than ten years and find it more valuable every time I plan a trip to Glacier. I'm not a climber but really enjoy off trail hiking.Edward's route descriptions between peaks and access routes are simply fantastic compared to anything else available. The park has changed a lot but every route I've tried from the book is actually there - with a little route finding - and always an adveture. My copy is highlighted, worn, and full of post-its.
If you enjoy Glacier and off trail exploring buy this book. Its not a trail guide but it has really enhanced my enjoyment of the park.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive, detailed, excellent
As the previous reviewer notes, the 1995 edition is most useful.Unless you buy used from Amazon, you WILL get the 1995 edition. It contains many crucial updates and additions.

Route descriptions are surprisingly detailed for a guidebook.Mostimportant peaks have multiple routes described.Seeing as how there is effectively zero route information on the internet, you're stuck with it.Luckily, the book is very good!

3-0 out of 5 stars More Maps and Photos
Be sure you get the 1995 revised edition of this book. I received the original 1984 edition, and it is heavy on text and light on route maps and photos. Many of the peaks and routes have no supporting photos. I suspect the 1995 revision has corrected this. Climbing guidebooks need to be visual.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential for Mountaineers who visit Glacier!
This guide covers most of the peaks in the park. Many of the mountains not covered here are at least mentioned and Edwards proclaims the apparent ease of these climbs. My experience agrees with this surmission. I have been on the mountains of the park with, and without the guide. When the guide was in possession, the climb was greatly simplified. Well done and a must for those interested in climbing mountains in Glacier National Park! ... Read more

This is a good Flora, if you want to do some serious botanizing in Glacier Park and the surrounding area this is a must have.I highly reccomend it to botanists, botany students, those with a very deep interest in botany and especially to native plant gardeners in Montana.I have found a few errors in the three years I have used this book, but it is the best book to have if you are in Glacier. You might supplement with Flora of the Pacific Northwest. ... Amazon.com Review
Spanning 3.3 million acres and accessible by a single road atBartlett Cove, Glacier Bay National Park is an unspoiled region oftidewater glaciers, pristine waters, and an impressive array ofwildlife, including porpoises, sea lions, seals, otters, and threespecies of whales. Located 60 miles north of Juneau, the bay itself is62 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point, and issurrounded by a horseshoe rim of mountains that include theFairweather Range to the west, the Chilkat Range to the east, and theSt. Elias, Alsek, and Takhinsha mountains to the north. Containingabundant travel and trip-planning information, major kayaking routes, and day-hiking opportunities, this guide is designed for those whodare to step off the park tour boats and float planes to explore andenjoy a seemingly endless expanse of untrammeled wilderness. A livelyintroduction covers geologic, natural, and historical information, including the extraordinarily rapid rate in which the ice in thisregion continues to retreat, causing U.S. Geological Surveytopographical maps to be continually outdated. As an added bonus, backcountry paddling and hiking concerns, such as what to do if youcapsize and when and wear to ford a stream, are also discussed. Theauthor's diary-like reminiscings, such as the time he got caught in atangle of alder branches and spied a moose being chased by a hungrywolf, provide amusement as well as a greater understanding of thisspectacular region. Glacier Bay is nothing short of a wildernessenthusiast's paradise. Make your trip a memorable one by knowing whereand when to visit this "unspeakably pure and sublime"destination. ... Read more

Product Description
Explains the physical principles underlying the behaviour of glaciers and ice sheets and concludes with a chapter on the information about past climate and atmospheric composition obtainable from ice cores. The past 40 years have seen major advances in most aspects of the subject; the book concentrates on these. It is an updated and expanded version of the second edition, and is now available in the long-awaited paperback format. Much of the book deals with developments since the second edition was published.

Dr Paterson's introduction to glacier studies was with the British North Greenland Expedition in 1953-4. He emigrated to Canada in 1957 and between 1959 and 1980 studied glaciers in the Canadian Arctic and the Rocky Mountains, mainly under the auspices of the Canadian Government's Polar Continental Shelf Project. Since 1980 he has done consulting work and has also been a visiting scientist with the Geophysics Department at the University of Copenhagen (three times) and with the Australian Antarctic Division. He has also given a comprehensive lecture course at the Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology in Lanzhou, China. He is now retired (more or less) and lives in British Columbia.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to theoretical glaciology.
This is the 3rd edition of a classical university textbook. It is an introduction to the behaviour of glaciers and ice sheets from a theoretical point of view. A wide range of subjects are treated e.g. ice dynamics, mass balance, climatology, ice core analysis, hydrology, thermal properties, etc. The equations governing the flow of valley glaciers, ice sheets and ice streams are presented along with the physical arguments.
A basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is an advantage.
